    Truck collision: LASTMA rescues driver with broken legs

    Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), on Thursday morning, rescued a truck driver, who broke his legs in a head-on collision between two loaded trucks.

    The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, in a statement in Lagos added that two others were rescued with serious head injuries.

    The statement was signed by Mr Taofiq Adebayo, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA.

    He said that the rescued truck driver with broken legs and  two others with serious head injuries were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.

    According to Giwa, the accident occurred at Ajegunle bus-stop, heading towards Toll-gate, Sango, Lagos.

    “The collision involved two loaded trucks transporting bottled Maltina (FKJ 240 XS) and floor tiles.

    “Immediate investigations reveals that one of the trucks, driving against traffic at high speed, lost control due to brake failure and collided with the oncoming truck fully loaded with floor tiles.

    “Despite ongoing government campaigns against driving against upcoming vehicle (one-way) and stressing the importance of vehicle maintenance, particularly the braking system, drivers continue to violate the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018,” he said.

    The special adviser urged all truck drivers and private car owners to avoid over  speeding and to check the condition of their vehicles, especially during the rainy season, before driving within and outside the state.

    He added that to ensure free vehicular movement around the accident scene, LASTMA officers called on the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA)’s Response Unit for immediate evacuation of the trucks.

    Giwa, who  emphasised the importance of safety while driving, expressed his sympathies to those injured in the accident.

    He urged all motorists, including truck drivers, to refrain from over  speeding during any journey within and  outside Lagos.

    One dies in Third Mainland Bridge accident

    One person was confirmed dead in an accident that occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Saturday morning.

    The fatal accident involved a Mini Truck (MUS 489 XS) and a Toyota Camry (KRD 470 JD).

    “Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by excessive speeding during a heavy downpour this morning,” the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said in a statement.

    The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, in the statement signed by Mr Adebayo Taofiq, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA, said that three others were rescued at the accident scene.

    He said that operatives of LASTMA responded swiftly to the accident, which occured near the Unilag waterfront, heading towards the Iyana-Oworonsoki area of Lagos.

    Giwa said that despite the government’s ongoing campaign to educate motorists about speed limits, drivers continued to flout the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

    He urged both commercial bus drivers and private car owners to avoid exceeding speed limits on the Third Mainland Bridge and other roads throughout the state.

    Giwa said that the deceased was promptly removed by State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) officials, while LASTMA cleared the accident vehicles to ensure smooth traffic flow on the bridge.

    He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and emphasised the importance of road safety.

    14 die in auto crash in Kano

    No fewer than 14 persons died in an auto-crash at Imawa town along the Zaria – Kano highway in Kura Local Government Area of Kano State.

    The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Ibrahim Abdullahi, confirmed the accident to newsmen on Friday in Kano.

    He said that the accident occurred when a truck with registration number MKA 537 XN lost control and collided with pedestrians who had just concluded Friday prayers and killed 14 of them

    Abdullahi said, “We received a distress call at about 01:50 p.m. on June 28, 2024, On receiving the information, we quickly dispatched our personnel and vehicle to the scene of the accident.

    “The FRSC is committed to road safety and urges all road users to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to prevent such avoidable tragedies.”

    The sector commander extended  his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the  public that efforts were ongoing to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.

    Accident claims 3, injures 5 in Anambra

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that three persons died in a multiple accident on Sunday in Oba in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra, along Owerri-Oraifite-Onitsha road.

    Confirming the incident to journalists in Onitsha, the FRSC Sector Commander in Anambra, Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, said that the multiple accident involved eight vehicles.

    Irelewuyi said that it involved a commercial motorcycle with no registration number, three yellow tricycles with no registration number, two toyota Hiace commercial buses with no registration number.

    He said that other vehicles involved in the accident were a white Mack trailer with no registration number, a navy blue Toyota Camry with no registration number.

    The commander attributed the probable cause of the fatal crash to a loss of control as a result of break failure.

    According to him, an eyewitness said that tax collectors were stopping tricycles collecting taxes when the driver of the Mack truck failed break, lost control, and rammed into the other vehicles.

    “15 people were involved in the crash, five persons injured, comprising three male and two female adults.

    “Three persons were killed, comprising two male, one female child and seven people were rescued unhurt.

    “Passersby took casualties to the hospital before the arrival of FRSC rescue team from RS5.36 Oraifite Unit Command Anambra,” he said.

    The sector commander noted that the scene was tensed as hoodlums and angry mob came with machete protesting towards the revenue collectors for orchestrating the crash.

    Irelewuyi sympathised with the families of the dead victims and wished the injured victims quick recovery.

    He warned motorists to desist from disobeying traffic rules and regulations by servicing their vehicles to minimum safety standard before plying the road.

    Bauchi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ahmad Aliyu Jalam has lost his life in an auto crash.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Jalam died in the ghastly motor accident that occurred on the busy Misau-Darazo highway on Saturday.

    Meanwhile, Governor Bala Mohammed has expressed his condolence to the members of his immediate family and the entire people of the State

    In a statement issued in the early hours of Sunday, Mohammed described the deceased as a dedicated public servant, whose commitment to the development and well-being of his local communities was unwavering.

    The Governor said: “During his lifetime, he championed numerous initiatives aimed at improving good governance and community relations.

    “Late Ahmed Jalam was known for his tireless work, integrity, and compassion for the people he served and his service will be remembered and cherished by all.

    “His demise is deeply felt by all and the countless individuals whose lives he touched during his lifetime.”

    Mohammed, on behalf of his family, government and the good people of the state, extended his deepest condolences to the members of the late commissioner’s family and the entire people of the state.

    He also prayed that the Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest.

    The Governor said that the late commissioner, who left behind wives and many children, would be buried on Sunday in his hometown in Dambam Local Government Area according to Islamic rites.

    Hit-and-run driver kills woman in Anambra

    A driver hit and killed a female pedestrian along Awka-Onitsha Expressway in Anambra on Friday night,  according to the state Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

    Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, Commander of the FRSC in Anambra, who told newsmen on Saturday in Awka, said that the driver fled the scene after the incident.

    Irelewuyi said that the likely cause of the accident was speeding.

    He said that the crash involved an unidentified driver of a Toyota Hiace commercial bus with no registration number, enroute Upper Iweke, Onitsha.

    “According to eyewitness report, the driver of the vehicle, who was on speed, rammed into a pedestrian female adult and zoomed off.

    “FRSC rescue team arrived the scene and took the victim to Toronto Mortuary after the doctor confirmed her death,” he said.

    While condoling with the family of the dead, Irelewuyi cautioned motorists on speeding, especially during the rainy season.

    He urged them to ensure they keep to specified  speed limits.

    APC stalwart, Olumide Braithwaite survives ghastly accident

    Olumide Braithwaite, the only son of  late elder statesman and legal luminary, Tunji Braithwaite, has survived a ghastly auto accident in Abuja.

    The incident, which occurred on Thursday near the CBN headquarters, involved a buillion van and a Hilux pickup truck.

    Braithwaite, a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and strong member of the party’s media team during the presidential campaign, was said to have lost consciousness at the scene of the accident.

    NAN reports that emergency services responded promptly and took Braithwaite to the Garki Hospital where he was revived and now responding to treatment.

    The family, in a statement on Sunday, confirmed that Braithwaite was now in a stable condition and responding to treatment.

    It said Braithwaite was receiving the best possible care, adding that the medical team had expressed optimism about his recovery.

    “Mr Olumide Braithwaite and his family are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support and well wishes from friends, colleagues and the public.

    “They request privacy during this time as he focuses on his recovery. Further updates will be provided as necessary,” the statement said.

    BREAKING: Helicopter carrying Iran’s president crashes

    A helicopter carrying Iran’s President, Ebrahim Raisi reportedly suffered a “hard landing” on Sunday, Iranian state television reported, with no details.

    Due to the weather conditions and heavy fog, the helicopter carrying the president had to make a hard landing, it was gathered. However, according to Associated Press, it was not cleared if the President was onboard.

    Meanwhile, Fars News Agency reported that contact with the helicopter transporting the Iranian president has been lost

    Raisi was traveling in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province, when the incident happened near Jolfa, a city on the border with with the nation of Azerbaijan, some 600 kilometers (375 miles) northwest of the Iranian capital, Tehran.

    Rescuers were attempting to reach the site, state TV said, but had been hampered by poor weather condition in the area. There had been heavy rain reported with some wind.

    Raisi had been in Azerbaijan early Sunday to inaugurate a dam with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev. The dam is the third one that the two nations built on the Aras River.

    Iran flies a variety of helicopters in the country, but international sanctions make it difficult to obtain parts for them. Its military air fleet also largely dates back to before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

    Raisi, 63, is a hard-liner who formerly led the country’s judiciary. He is viewed as a protégé of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and some analysts have suggested he could replace the 85-year-old leader after his death or resignation from the role.

    Police confirm 6 dead in Imo road crash

    The Police Command in Imo has confirmed the death of six people in a road accident on  Saturday evening in Imo.

    The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Henry Okoye, who confirmed this on Sunday,said the crash occurred in Owerri.

    Okoye said that  a citizen reported to  the police  that the accident ,involving a Mack truck and four mini buses, occurred at IMSU Junction, along Okigwe Road at about 7:00p.m.

    “On arrival at the scene, police operatives, in synergy with public-spirited individuals ,evacuated the victims to Federal Medical Center (FMC), Owerri for medical attention, where the medical practitioner on duty confirmed six dead on arrival,” Okoye said.

    According to him, preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the articulated vehicle with registration number KWL857YE lost control of his vehicle and diverted to the other side of the road,where he ran over four mini busses and some pedestrians along the road which left many seriously injured.

    “Photographs and sketches of the accident scene have been taken and the accidental vehicles have been cleared off the road for easy flow of traffic, while the corpses of the deceased victims have been deposited at FMC mortuary for preservation

    “Efforts are in progress to contact the families of the deceased and injured victims and apprehend the driver of the truck ,who is on the run,” he added

    He disclosed that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Aboki Danjuma, had ordered full investigation  into the accident and arrest of  the fleeing  driver of the truck.

    FRSC confirms 7 dead in Ibadan road crash

    Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of seven persons in a road accident that occurred on Ibadan-Iseyin road on Thursday evening.

    The Public Relations Officer, FRSC, Oyo Sector Command, Mr Mayowa Odewo, said the deceased were five male adults, one female adult and one female child.

    Odewo said that 15 people also sustained varying degrees of injuries out of the 22 people involved in the crash.

    He attributed the accident, involving a Nissan Urvan commercial bus, with registration number: SEY 254 ZY and a Mazda commercial bus, with registration number LGB 343 XA, to speed violations and fatigue.

    Odewo stated that the 13 injured victims, including three male adults, nine female adults and one female child, had been taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

    He said that four of the seven corpses of the victims had been claimed by their families, while the remaining three had been deposited at a morgue.

    “The police from Motor Traffic Division (MTD) Police Division, Moniya, Ibadan, have taken possession of the two crashed vehicles, including bags and other valuables recovered from the victims,” he said.

    The FRSC spokesperson noted that no victim was saved by seat belt or other defensive gadgets.

    He urged motorists to always obey traffic rules and regulations as well as adhere to all traffic cautions on the road to prevent avoidable crashes.
