    Accident claims 5 lives on Lagos-Ibadan expressway

    No fewer than five persons died while two others sustained various degrees of injuries in a road crash involving four vehicles around Iperu on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

    Mr Ahmed Umar, the Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday in Abeokuta.

    Umar said that the accident which occurred at 8:45a.m. was caused by dangerous driving and excessive speed which led to loss of control.

    He said that the vehicles involved in the crash included a Mack truck marked UWN 279 YT and an Iveco truck with registration number AAB 973 ZY.

    Others are a tricycle marked PKA 438 UN and another tricycle with registration number LSD 566 QF.

    The sector commander said that 10 persons including eight males amd two females were involved in the accident.

    Umar explained that the five men who died were all in the tricycles while one man and a woman sustained injuries.

    He said that four of the deceased were deposited at Fakoya Mortuary, a private morgue in Sagamu.

    The sector commander said the fifth deceased man and the two injured persons were taken away by their relatives.

    He further said that the crash was avoidable while advising motorists to avoid excessive speed and dangerous driving as well as obey traffic rules and regulations.

    Umar commiserated the families of the victims and urged them to contact the FRSC unit in Sagamu for details of the crash and reclaiming of the victims’ belongings recovered from the crash scene. (NAN)

    Tokyo 2020: Nigeria loses Africa number 1 para-badminton player to accident

    African number one para-badminton player, Abdulrafiu Bello, has died in a ghastly motor accident, an official has said.

    The Kwara Director of Sports, Ibrahim Alarape, confirmed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ilorin.

    Bello, who is the coach of Kwara Badminton Association, died on Wednesday while returning from Lagos where he has gone for an interview with the Spanish embassy for the last round of the qualifications for Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

    The deceased, who is the Africa representative on the board of the World Para-badminton Federation, was scheduled to travel to Spain on May 6, for the final round of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics qualifier.

    Alarape said the accident occurred between Oyo town and Ogbomoso in Oyo State on Wednesday evening.

    The remains of Bello was on Thursday afternoon buried at the Muslim cemetery in Irewolede area of Ilorin, the Kwara capital.

    He was survived by his pregnant wife and aged mother.

    NAN reports that he is prominent among those confident of achieving glory for Africa at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.

    The Standing Lower (SL 4) player, a triple gold medallist at the African Para-Badminton Championships in 2018, is determined to make history for Nigeria and the continent at the Paralympics.

    Bello started playing badminton with able-bodied participants 17 years ago, and then decided to take up coaching.

    Bello qualified for the 2020 Brazil International Para-Badminton Championship and Spanish International Para-Badminton championships, but was hindered by the COVID-19 pandemic as both countries cancelled the championships.

    INEC confirms death of 3 staff in Borno accident

    The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the death of three of its staff in a road accident in Borno.

    The INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr Festus Okoye, made the confirmation in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja.

    Okoye said that the commission on Sunday received a sad report from Mohammed Ibrahim, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for the State, of a fatal road accident involving a number of its members of staff serving in the State.

    He said that Ibrahim informed the commission that an Electoral Officer (EO) and some Assistant Electoral Officers (AEOs) travelling from some Local Government Areas to Maiduguri for a special training ahead of the conversion of Voting Points into Polling Units were involved in the accident.

    According to him, the three members of staff that lost their lives are: Adamu Mohammed (EO, Biu LGA), Abubakar Joda and Suleiman Umar (AEOs, Damboa LGA), while five others sustained injuries.

    “The deceased staff, who were indigenes of Adamawa State, will be buried today, Monday, April 19 in Yola.

    “The Supervising National Commissioner for Borno, Adamawa and Taraba States, AVM Ahmed Tijjani-Mu’azu (rtd), will represent the Commission at their funeral, while the injured staffs are receiving treatment in a Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri.’’

    He noted that the three staff died in the course of national assignment.

    “While praying for the repose of their souls, the Commission extends its condolence to their families and wishes the injured staff speedy recovery.’’

    Okoye recalled that last week, INEC commenced nationwide train-the-trainer workshop in Abuja involving heads of operations drawn from all the states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

    The training is to be cascaded to State level nationwide ahead of the fieldwork for the physical conversion of the voting points to polling units.

    The aim is to conclude the exercise ahead of the resumption of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) on June 28.

    2 nurses die, 10 injured in Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway accident

    Two nurses were confirmed dead on Sunday while 10 others sustained injuries in a lone accident involving a Toyota Hiace bus around Akinale Village on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

    Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, Spokesperson, Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta.

    He explained that the accident, which occurred at 9:20a.m., was caused by excessive speed, use of handset by the driver which resulted in his losing control of the vehicle.

    He noted that 18 people were involved in the accident, which comprised one male and 17 female nurses.

    “One of the survivors said the driver of the Toyota Hiace bus, marked OG 49A 07, who was speeding and as well using his cellphone while driving around a bend, lost control and summersaulted several times.

    “The occupants in the bus were nurses who were all heading to a party to honour a matron in one of the hospitals in Abeokuta,” he said.

    Akinbiyi explained that the injured were evacuated to Hope Hospital, Adigbe, Abeokuta, while the two corpses were deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital, Ijaye, Abeokuta.

    he TRACE spokesman enjoined motorists to avoid excessive speed, especially during the rainy season, and also not to use mobile phone while driving.

    He said most accidents were avoidable if rules and regulations were followed.

    JUST IN: Another tanker accident rocks Otedola Bridge, one injured, six vehicles burnt

    Information reaching TheNewsGuru.com, TNG has it that at least one person on Saturday morning sustained injuries and six vehicles burnt after an accident occurred on Otedola Bridge, Lagos.

    It was gathered that the accident occurred between two low belt trucks around 2 am but a fire ensued when a 45,000 litre tanker carrying diesel rammed into the accident scene.

    According to sources, seven vehicles that were also on the bridge at bridge time gutted fire but rescuers were able to salvage one.

    According to reports, all drivers of the affected vehicles fled to safety before the fire outbreak, the motor boy of the diesel tanker who was caught up in the fire, sustained some injuries before he was rescued.

    Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Fire Service said it was able to save the tanker from exploding directly opposite the Otedola Estate Main Gate.

    The agency’s acting Controller, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye said they received a call about the fire around 2:15 am and immediately took steps to contain the situation.

    The Kaduna State Government said no fewer than 19 persons have died in a road traffic crash on Kaduna-Abuja highway.
    A statement issued by Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Samuel Aruwan, on Monday in Kaduna, indicated that 34 other passengers sustained injuries and were evacuated to hospital.
    Aruwan said, “Security agencies have reported that 19 people died in a ghastly road traffic crash at the Kateri axis of the Kaduna-Abuja highway on Sunday.
    “According to the report, the crash, which occurred late on Sunday evening, involved a commercial DAF trailer and was caused by a combination of speeding and an exploded tyre, leading to loss of control, which caused the vehicle to veer into the bush.
    “A total of 53 people were involved in the crash, 16 of these died on the spot, with three others later confirmed dead.”
    He added that the survivors were receiving treatment in hospital.
    Aruwan also said that the driver, Auwal Idris, had informed security officials that all the passengers boarded the vehicle at Kara in Lagos and were heading to Kano, with a few of them disembarking in Zaria.

    Truck kills pedestrian in Onitsha

    A middle-aged man has been confirmed dead in an accident involving a truck on Onitsha-Owerri highway in Onitsha, Anambra late on Saturday.

    Mr Andrew Kumapayi, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Sector Commander confirmed the development in Awka on Sunday.

    “The crash involved a Mark truck with registration number, JJJ660XB, driven by an unidentified person.

    “Eye-witness reports reaching us indicate that the crash was due to break failure which made the truck to roll back and crush a man who was walking on the road.

    “FRSC rescue team from Upper Iweka Outpost rushed the victim to Toronto Hospital in Onitsha. He was later confirmed dead by the doctor on duty and his body deposited at the morgue,” Kumapayi told NAN in an interview.

    The sector commander said that the driver of the truck had been handed over to the police for further investigation.

    While condoling with the family of the deceased, Kumapayi warned motorists, especially truck drivers to put their vehicles in order, saying that the FRSC had started clamping down on rickety vehicles.

    He also advised pedestrians to be safety-conscious before crossing highways.

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), on Thursday, said no fewer than six persons escaped death in an accident that occurred on Osogbo-Gbongan expressway.

    The FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mrs Kudirat Ibrahim, made this known in a statement issued in Osogbo by the command’s Spokesperson, Mrs Agnes Ogungbemi.

    Ibrahim said that two vehicles, a Suzuki, with registration number: BDS 594 XA and a Toyota Corolla, with registration number: ABC 561 AR, collided due to disregard for the Road Traffic Act.

    She said, “The accident occurred adjacent Yessy Event Centre, with five males and one female involved, although four males and the only female got injured.”

    The sector commander said that the injured victims had been taken to Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital in Osogbo by a patrol team, while the damaged vehicles had been towed away, to avoid gridlock.

    She attributed the accident to lack of patience by the drivers, leading to wrongful overtaking, without foreseeing the danger ahead of them.

    Ibrahim cautioned motorists to be road safety conscious and to always obey road traffic regulations, warning that the command would not spare anyone caught disobeying the road safety regulations.

    The sector commander also appealed to all road users to take safety on roads as shared responsibilities between them and the corps.

    According to her, road safety must be embraced by all, rather than being put in the hands of FRSC alone.

    10 policemen in Bauchi Gov’s convoy escape death in motorcade accident

    No fewer than 10 policemen of the Rapid Response Squad in Bauchi State’s Gov. Bala Mohammed motorcade were involved in a road accident on Monday.

    The accident occurred while Gov. Mohammed was inspecting a 60- kilometer Burga-Yelwan Duguri road project in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area (LGA) currently being constructed by the state government.

    The road is designed to connect the people of Tafawa Balewa LGA to Yelwan Duguri and the environs of Alkaleri Local Government Area of the state.

    A correspondent of NAN, who witnessed the accident reports that the Toyota Hilux vehicle conveying the police officers veered off the road around 1:30 p.m as a result of the huge dust that made visibility almost impossible.

    The Hilux lost control and somersaulted twice, but no life was lost in the accident.

    All the police personnel involved were taken to the Bununu General Hospital in Tafawa Balewa LGA for treatment.

    TRAGIC: ESUT doctor dies in ghastly motor accident

    A medical doctor identified as Dr Chidera Ifudu, who works with the teaching hospital of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has died in a ghastly motor accident.

    The tragic accident happened in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State.

    While details of the accident remained sketchy, it was gathered that the doctor was trying to avoid hitting a pedestrian when his car veered off the road and crashed.

    The accident involving Dr Ifudu, an only son, and his Lexus SUV occurred on Friday morning, February 12, two months to his marriage ceremony.

    The marriage ceremony, according to invitation cards found in the doctor’s accidented SUV, was scheduled for April 10.

    Dr Ifudu and Judith Ogochukwu’s traditional was scheduled for Tuesday, April 6, 2021, in Umuahia-South local Government Area of Abia State.

    The church wedding was to hold at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Independence Layout, Enugu on April 10.

    What a cruel world we’re leaving in. How can someone’s wedding card be used to trace his remains after soul departure in a ghastly motor accident.

    Brother, as die hard believers, even though it’s hard to believe and accept, we can only say Good bye with Prayers for God knows it all.

    May God give your Dad, Siblings and other relations the fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss. Our thought is with them. It’s hard to take but Blessed be the name of God on those who have faith in Him for he who have high Faith and Trust in God will always find comfort through the opium that sedates of our emotional worries and pains in the challenges life. God is Hope.

    “For us the fortunate fast livers, the earlier we begin to have a deep thought on our lives with respect to death, the better for everyone.”
