Male councillorship aspirants are required to pay N150,000 for nomination forms, alongside a N50,000 administrative fee, according to the chairman.

Oladeji said: “Accord has made its ticket very affordable, as a considerate response to the severe economic challenges facing the state.

“This is aimed at enhancing accessibility to governance and encouraging participatory democracy among ordinary Lagos residents, not just the wealthy elite.

“In addition to affordable forms, Accord is offering free nomination forms to female aspirants, empowering women and supporting the 35 per cent Affirmative Action goal.”

Highlighting the election timetable, Oladeji said purchase of nomination forms would run from April 19 to May 10 at the party’s state secretariat.

He stated that submission of forms would close on May 10, with screening of aspirants scheduled for May 12 and party primaries on May 14.

He added that the party’s Primary Tribunal Committee will sit on May 15, while any required rerun election would take place on May 17.

Oladeji noted that all payments must be made to the party’s designated bank account, with receipts presented to the Accord State Treasurer for processing.

Tribunal dismisses Accord Party’s petition against Gov. Okpebholo, APC

The Edo Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday dismissed the petition filed by Accord Party against the declaration of Gov. Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the Sept. 21, 2024 governorship election.

Delivering judgment, the Justice Wilfred Kpochi-led three-member tribunal held that Accord Party and its governorship candidate, Mr Bright Enabulele made weighty allegations but failed to defend them.

The tribunal said that the petitioners failed to name a single perpetrator to substantiate their allegations of thuggery, stuffing of ballots, harassing and molesting voters.

According to the tribunal, the two petitioners were so inconsistent in their claims with allegations of non compliance with the Electoral Act 2002 and calling for nullification of the election on one hand while seeking to be declared winners on the other hand.

“On the other hand, they are seeking to be declared winners of the election they claimed to have been conducted without compliance with the Electoral Act.”

The tribunal held that there was no meaningful evidence for it to act upon to nullify the election of Okpebholo and APC and subsequently dismissed the petition in its entirety.

The tribunal thereafter affirmed the election of Okpebholo as being valid and conducted in compliance with the law.

NAN reports that the tribunal had earlier dismissed the petition filed by Action Alliance (AA)also challenging the declaration of Okpebholo and the APC as winners of the Edo governorship election.

The petition of AA was dismissed for being frivolous and lacking in merit.

The tribunal is currently delivering judgment in the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and its governorship candidate Mr Asue Ighodalo also challenging the declaration of the APC and Okpebholo in the Edo governorship election of Sept. 21, 2024.

Electricity: Nigerians can’t afford removal of another subsidy – Accord Party

The Accord Party has urged the Federal Government not to remove subsidy on electricity to avoid more hardship on the citizens.

The Lagos State Chairman of the party, Mr Dele Oladeji on Thursday disclosed the removal of another subsidy would be much burden  on the masses.

Oladeji said: “Nigerians cannot afford removal of another subsidy.

“The debt overhead can effectively be cleared if the Federal Government can block leakages and corruption.”

The politician said that most Nigerians would not be able to cope with the cost of electricity without subsidy.

“The planned removal will take electricity access and usage out of the reach and homes of 80 per cent Nigerians,” Oladeji said.

The Federal Government, on Wednesday, said that it had become difficult to sustain subsidy on electricity due to increased debts.

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu said at a press conference in Abuja that Nigeria must begin to move toward a cost-effective tariff model.

He  said that the country was  indebted to the tune of N1.3 trillion to electricity generating companies, while its debt to gas companies stood at $1.3 billion.

“A political party is the foundation for the nation’s democracy. Once you get it right the nation will be better for it.

“Get the leadership of political parties right, get their managers to obey the rule of law and it will spread to the larger society.

“When we have men and women that are conscious of the provisions of the constitution, desirous of making the political party work and for the rule of law to prevail, it will help the society.

“Through the men of integrity and capacity so elected, we will be at the helms of affairs of the society.

“The problem we are having today is that a lot of party leaders have commercialized politics. But today we want to tell the world that Accord is a party desirous of building the new cradle that will help in rebuilding the nation.

“From today, the struggle has started and the work has begun. Our election is not to come and relax but to work to build a new Accord Part which will build the nation,” he said.

  • Don’t remove discount on public transport, Accord Party tells Sanwo-Olu

Don’t remove discount on public transport, Accord Party tells Sanwo-Olu

The Accord Party in Lagos State on Saturday advised Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu not to carry out the planned removal of 25 per cent discount on public transport services in the state.

The Lagos State Chairman of the party, Mr Dele Oladeji, made the plea in an interview in Lagos.

Oladeji said that residents still find it difficult to survive the economic hardship occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy hence the need for government to sustain the public transport discount.

He said that such palliative put in place by Sanwo-Olu in the wake of Federal Government’s removal of subsidy on fuel had gone a long way to alleviate suffering of masses.

According to him, the initiative has lessened the pains of not only workers whose ‘take home could not take them home’ but also artisans, traders and ordinary residents.

“It is our strong opinion that Gov. Sanwo-Olu will be unfair to Lagos residents to remove the meagre 25 per cent palliative discount on transportation on government own transportation systems like BRT, Lag ferry, and blue light rail.

“In Accord, we reject the removal of this meagre 25 per cent palliative discount on transportation,” the chieftain said.

He rather than removing the existing one, the governor should consider more palliatives in other sectors to make life abundant for all and sundry.

“Governance is about security and welfare of the people. Those at the helms of affairs should be seen to be showing empathy on the masses at this time when men hearts are failing.

“We are here again for the umpteenth time demand for more palliative discount for Lagos residents on health care, tuition fee in all tertiary institutions owned by Lagos state and on Eko rice.

“This palliative is the only way Gov. Sanwo-Olu can prove his commitment to his T.H.E.M.E campaign template.

“Campaign and elections are over, these are the times to put his words to action and not to abandon Lagos residents to ill fates,” he said.

NAN reports that the Lagos State Government has said that it will end the 25 per cent discount on state-owned transport services on Sunday.

In a statement on Friday, Kolawole Ojelabi, Head of Corporate Communication, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), said the state-owned transport services would return to 100 per cent fares on Monday.

“The 25 per cent rebate on regulated public transport buses, ferry, and train ends on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2024.

“From Monday, Jan. 29, 2024, transport fare on regulated transport services return to 100 per cent,” the statement read.

On July 31, 2023, Sanwo-Olu announced a 50 per cent reduction in the fares charged by all state-owned transport services.

Sanwo-Olu had said the move was part of the palliatives being rolled out by the state government to cushion the effects of the petrol subsidy removal and the attendant hike in the prices of commodities.

The prices of petrol had soared after President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of petrol subsidy in his May 29, 2023 inauguration address.

  • Why Accord party supported Makinde’s re-election – Shina Peller

Why Accord party supported Makinde’s re-election – Shina Peller

Mr. Shina Peller, Accord Party member, House of Representatives from Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency, Oyo State, says his party’s support for Gov. Seyi Makinde’s re-election during the last general election is in the interest of the people.

Peller disclosed this on Saturday at the Accord stakeholders’ meeting held in Ibadan.

Peller, the Accord Senatorial Candidate for Oyo North Senatorial District, had supported Makinde, the governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He said the party had to review its performance after the 2023 general election, which saw the need for a coalition with the PDP governorship candidate in the interest of the people.

“We came out of an election without winning any of the three Senatorial seat and 14 Rep seats. We are a third force party, a new party for that matter..

“We compete with APC and PDP, so the only thing we had to do then was to look for the best candidate out of the APC and PDP, and find a way of forming a coalition.

“All the technicalities that have been put in front of our governorship candidate are facts, even our candidate did not win in his polling unit, these are very important facts that we must pay attention to,” he said.

The lawmaker expressed happiness that his party were not blinded by political party ideology or religious sentiment, but putting into consideration the interest of the people.

“We are happy that we are not blinded by our political party ideology, our religious interest, but putting into consideration the interest of the people.

“I believe this is the most paramount interest that should be protected in the politics,” Peller said.

Peller said that Makinde had done well for the people of Oke Ogun, by bringing developmental projects to the zone

Also, Mrs Adebukola Ajaja, the National Secretary of the party, said that they have seen the future of the party, hence Makinde was supported for the re-election.

”We saw the future of Accord and felt we don’t want our people to suffer. There was a kind of coalition between executives and candidates at the just-concluded general election,” she said.

Ajaja said that the meeting was attended by party leaders from each local government.

  • PDP’s Adebutu remains our governorship candidate, says Ogun Accord Party

PDP’s Adebutu remains our governorship candidate, says Ogun Accord Party

Accord Party in Ogun says there is no going back in the adoption of Mr Ladi Adebutu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as its candidate for the March 18 governorship election.

Alhaji Tajudeen Olayokun, the state Chairman of Accord Party, said this at a news conference held at the party’s secretariat, on Saturday in Abeokuta.

Olayokun dispelled reports of the party joining forces with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state ahead of the governorship election.

The Accord Party chairman explained that the party and its supporters remain cordial with Adebutu of PDP on his candidacy.

“I am here this morning to address the issue of some miscreants and misguided elements flying news of calumny about our party in Ogun State toward supporting a political party and others.

“I will like to bring it to the notice of the good people of Ogun state, that Ogun state Accord Party remains cordial with Ladi Adebutu of PDP on his candidacy come March 18 as our governorship candidate.

“The news of Accord Party in the state pitching tent with APC should be thrashed and we hereby distance ourselves from such lies,” he said.

Olayokun noted that the decision to support the PDP governorship candidate was because his ideology tallied with that of Accord Party in terms of capacity building, rural and infrastructure development, agriculture and security.

“The party decided to throw its weight behind a reliable candidate with competence, character and goodwill in the interest of the people of the state.

“Our members should disregard anything contrary. We don’t have anything to do with APC. We are happy that Adebutu, the governorship candidate of the PDP is trusted and share the same ideology with us,’’ he said.
