NAFDAC warns against use of YW cosmetics glycolic acid

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned against the use of a cosmetic product, YW Cosmetics Glycolic Acid, containing 70 per cent content.

The warning is contained in a public alert with No. 032/2022, signed by the Director-General of the agency, Prof. Moji Adeyeye and released on Tuesday in Abuja.

Adeyeye stated that the agency was equally informed of the product by the German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL).

According to her, 70 per cent of glycolic acid is a strong acidic alpha hydroxyl-acid (AHA) and is the most popular used in skin care.

She said that the product was manufactured from sugar cane, and “is the smallest AHA, and the most effective at getting into the skin”.

“It is a substance that chemically exfoliates the skin by dissolving dead skin cells and oils.

“Products containing AHAs are marketed for a variety of purposes, such as smoothing fine lines and surface wrinkles, improving skin texture and tone, unblocking and cleansing pores, and improving skin condition in general.

“Alpha hydroxy acids can also cause mild skin irritation, redness, swelling, itching, and skin discolouration.

“Facial peels left on the skin for periods longer than recommended can cause severe burns to the skin.

“The product comes in a 50ml bottle and is traded online without a batch and lot identification number,” Adeyeye said.

According to her, NAFDAC implores consumers to exercise caution in the use of YW Cosmetics Glycolic Acid.

“Healthcare professionals, consumers and patients are encouraged to report adverse events related to the use of this product to the nearest NAFDAC office, NAFDAC PRASCOR on (20543 TOLLS FREE from all networks).

“The public is also encouraged to report adverse effects via pharmacovigilance@nafdac.gov.ng or via the NAFDAC ADR e-Reporting platform available at www.nafdac.gov.ng.

WITCH: Court sentences man to death by hanging

Justice Agnes Onyebueke of a High Court sitting in Akamkpa, Cross River, has sentenced to death by hanging a man, Ayanime Udo, for killing his twin daughters whom he accused of being witches.

Justice Onyebueke, who delivered judgement on the matter with suit number HK/6C/2018, stressed that Udo’s act was satanic, demonic, and beyond human comprehension.

The judge ruled that the defendant had willfully and gruesomely murdered his 11-year-old twins, Mfoniso Anyanime and Emediong Anyanime, in 2017 after calling them witches.

When cross-examined, the middle age defendant could not defend his allegation of witchcraft against the 11-year old female children he had allegedly given a malt drink mixed with acid from his motorcycle.

After drinking the malt, one of the twins died on the spot on January 10, 2017, while the second was said to have crawled to the road where a kindhearted person picked and took her to the hospital where she died the following day.

The incident was first reported in February 2017.

  • Man commits suicide after bathing wife with acid

The Police in Anambra has commenced investigation into the cause of the suicide committed by one Daniel Okafor after bathing his wife, Pauline with acid on Tuesday at Nsugbe, near Onitsha.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday, said the suspect seemed to have drank some quantity of the chemical he poured on his wife after the incident.

“He was later certified dead by a medical doctor while receiving treatment and his corpse deposited at Apex Mortuary for autopsy,” Mohammed said.

NAN gathered that the victim, a nurse, who suffered the acid attack from her husband, was referred to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi from Immaculate Heart Hospital, Onitsha for proper medical care.

A doctor at the Accident and Emergency ward of the Teaching Hospital, who pleaded anonymity, said she was received at about 7p.m. on Wednesday.

“Due to her critical condition, we cannot allow visitors near her now, but I can assure you that she is responding to treatment,” the source said.

The incident occurred at about 8p.m. on Tuesday at Chinonso Chemist shop close to Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe in Anambra East Local Government Area of the state.

An eye witness, Mr Clement Ekwenugo who expressed shock at the development, told NAN that the couple had disagreements before now concerning the choice of their son as the next of kin on a land and house which belonged to the nurse.

“The nurse bought the land from her in-law and used her son’s name as next of kin, but this angered her husband.

“Pauline was in her Chemist shop when the husband came in from behind the house through a fence to bathe his wife with the acid, who then ran out for help. This is the first time we are experiencing this type of incident in Nsugbe.”

Another source, Miss Ogochukwu Chukwulobe said, “We thought the matter was over when this incident occurred.

“He seemed prepared for his own death after pouring the acid on my madam because he drank another acid in a small container in his pocket and went outside where he fell into a drain.

“This has not happened in this town before; I am not happy because my madam who I am learning chemist business from is the victim,” she added.
