    Speaker Abbas sad over Niger boat mishap, Adamawa flood victims, seeks relief

    The Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has mourned victims of the boat mishap in Niger State and flooding in Adamawa State, which led to loss of lives, destruction of property, and displacement of residents.

    In Niger State, about 15 passengers reportedly died in a boat mishap that occurred in Zumba, Shiroro Local Government Area, on Saturday. The boat, which was carrying 43 passengers, 60 bags of paddy rice, three cows, and two rams, was said to be on its way to the Zumba weekly market when it struck a tree and capsized.

    In another incident, five people were reportedly killed, over 50 others injured, and many displaced following a flood that swept through several communities in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas of Adamawa State.

    The Speaker, in his reaction to the incidents, lamented the fate of the victims, especially as these were natural disasters.

    Speaker Abbas condoled families of the deceased, people of the affected communities, and the governments of Niger and Adamawa States.

    While seeking intervention and relief from relevant public and private bodies, the Speaker prayed to Allah (SWT) to forestall a recurrence.

    The Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has indefinitely suspended the Emir of Daware, Alhaji Hassan Ja’afaru, following allegations of corruption, maladministration, breach of security, and other offences.

    Ja’afaru, who was the former district head of Daware in Fufore Local Government Area, was found guilty after an investigation into his conduct.

    The suspension was contained in a letter dated April 25, 2025, signed by the Permanent Secretary, Chieftaincy Affairs, Adama Mamman, and made available to journalists.

    Part of the letter read, “Following a series of complaints made against you for maladministration, corruption, breach of security, confiscation of farmlands and creating a vacuum that has led to all traditional issues remaining unattended, as a result of your non-staying in your domain, I am therefore directed by the Executive Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri, to suspend you from office indefinitely.

    “You are, therefore, requested to hand over all government properties in your possession to the district scribe pending further actions.”

    Governor Fintiri has repeatedly emphasized his administration’s commitment to fighting corruption across all sectors of the state, vowing that no officeholder would be shielded from accountability.

    INSECURITY! Insurgents raze communities in Adamawa, loot property

    Boko Haram insurgents have reportedy launched an attack on Kwapre and surrounding villages in Hong local government area of Adamawa state, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

    Eyewitnesses reported that the attack began at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, and lasted into the early hours of Wednesday, February 26, during which schools, houses, and businesses were set ablaze and valuable assets were looted.

    The village head of Kwapre, Joel Kulaha, and his counterpart from King village, Abalis Jawaja, told our correspondent how the heavily armed terrorists stormed the communities, burning buildings and carting away valuables.

    It was gathered that no lives were lost, as residents had been forewarned of the attack and fled their homes before the insurgents arrived.

    We escaped with our lives, but everything we own is gone,” Kulaha lamented.

    A source said soldiers stationed in nearby Garaha town responded after some time, engaging the attackers in a gun battle and forcing them to retreat.

    However, the intervention came too late to prevent the extensive destruction.

    Recall that Kwapre has suffered multiple Boko Haram attacks in the past, as Adamawa remains one of the three northeastern states hardest hit by the insurgency.

    Adamawa commission refunds N157.9m to pilgrims

    The Adamawa State Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare Commission has refunded N157,952.880 million to 2,586 pilgrims who performed the 2023 pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

    This was contained in a statement signed by Aisha Sa’ad, the commission’s information officer on Monday in Yola.

    The statement said that the fund refunded was given to pilgrims as a compensation for the poor services rendered to them while in the holy land.

    “Each pilgrim who performed Hajj (pilgrimage) in 2023 was paid N61,080 for poor services rendered by the service providers at the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

    “The kingdom of Saudi Arabia has refunded money to Nigeria through National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to be shared among the 36 States of the country.

    “The sum of 150 Saudi Riyals which is equivalent to N157,952.880 was given to Adamawa State Muslim Pilgrims’ Welfare Commission by the NAHCON to be shared to 2,586 Pilgrims that performed the 2023 Hajj exercise,” it added.

    The statement said that the disbursement was done ssuccessfully with all the beneficiaries rreceiving payment through their bank accounts.

    Adamawa confirms  12 deaths from cholera outbreak

    The Adamawa state government has confirmed the outbreak of cholera, with 12 persons dead.

    The state Commissioner for Health, Felix Tangwami, in a statement in Yola on Sunday, September 22, said the dead were among 30 people who tested positive out of 50 samples of suspected cases.

    The commissioner stated: “On behalf of the state governor, I want to inform you all that we have received the results of samples sent to NCDC for confirmation. It’s confirmed that what we are dealing with is acute watery diarrhoea or cholera.

    “Unfortunately, out of the 50 samples sent to the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) in Abuja, 30 samples returned positive for cholera, six came back negative, two were still ongoing, and 12 were still pending in isolation.

    The commissioner who had last week dismissed stories about a cholera outbreak in the state, added, “With these results, therefore, I want to confirm to the public that there is an outbreak of cholera in Adamawa.”

    He advised the people to be cautious of their movements, interactions, personal hygiene, and the source of water they drink.

    “The public is assured that the government through its health workers is doing everything possible by the grace of God to contain the situation as it has done in the past with other similar outbreaks.

    “We ask that people should continue to pray for us as we face this monster. They should remain calm and cooperate with health workers as they go around to sensitize and give professional advice,” the commissioner stated.

    Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has commenced payment of the N70,000 minimum wage approved by the Federal Government.

    The governor initiated the payment of the new minimum wage for state workers, starting from August 2024, with a promise that local government workers will begin receiving the increased salary in September.

    This has sparked widespread celebration among civil servants in the state.

    Multiple sources, including state workers who received their salaries, confirmed the development to Daily Trust.

    Some workers expressed appreciation to the governor for fulfilling his promise while describing him as a “man of his word.”

    The implementation of the new minimum wage has been hailed as a significant achievement for the Fintiri administration, which has been nicknamed the “Fresh Air Government” by its supporters.

    Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri on Monday sworn-in 21 newly elected council chairmen in Yola with a charge, to be transparent and accountable in the discharge of their duties.

    The election , which  was conducted on Saturday, saw the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won all the seats in the state.

    Also PDP won 255 out 256 councilorship  seats in Adamawa while NNPP won one in Demsa Local Government Area.

    Speaking at the event, Fintiri congratulated the elected council chairmen, describing their victories  as well deserved.

    “To whom much is given much is expected, therefore, work for the people and be open to them as the  era of absenteeism is gone. Always endeavour to be  there for your people.

    “This is not part time job, as the leader of a tier of government close to the people, they must have access to you as much as possible at all times,’’ he said.

    According to him, people will ask questions and demand answers, expect performance and insist every fund given for development is effectively utilized.

    Fintiri also warned them against corruption and impunity, saying anyone fund wanting would face the law.

    In his remarks, Mr Tahir Shehu, State PDP Chairman congratulated the chairmen and thanked the electorates for the confidence they have on the party.

    He also thanked security agencies and the media for making it possible for a hitch free election.

    Bathiar Wisly, Speaker Adamawa Assembly called on the chairmen and their councilors to work together with the governor for more development in the state.

    According to him, their victories have paved way for more development at the grassroots.

    Suleiman Gankuba, Chairman Toungo Local Government, who spoke on behalf of other chairmen thanked and appreciated the electorates for the confidence response in them.

    He assured the people of the state that they would work hard for more dividends of democracy for their people.

    PDP clears all LGs in Adamawa

    The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won all 21 council seats in the just-concluded Local Government (LG) election in Adamawa State.

    According to the results just released by the State Independent Electoral Commission, all the councillorship seats were also won by the ruling PDP in the 226 wards in the North-East state except the Demsa Ward of the Demsa Local Government Area where the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) won one councillorship seat.

    The Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Mohammed Umar, said the ruling party won overwhelmingly in all the 21 local government councils of the state. He announced the results on Sunday evening at the commission’s headquarters in Yola, the state capital.

    Umar said out of the 19 registered political parties in the state, 12 participated in the exercise.

    The Adamawa local government election was the first after the Supreme Court granted financial autonomy to the third tier of government, ordering the Federal Government to pay the 20.60% monthly allocation of the 774 LGs in the country directly to their exclusive accounts and not to accounts controlled by governors.

    The apex court in the landmark judgement on Thursday also barred power-drunk governors from dissolving democratically elected local government councils.

    Adamawa Govt declares 3-day mourning for ex-EFCC boss Lamorde

    Adamawa Government has declared a three-day mourning in honour of  former Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Lamorde, and the late Member State Assembly, representing Ganye Constituency, Musa Abdulmalik.

    Mr Humwashi Wonosikou, Chief Press Secretary to the governor, said this in a  statement on Monday in Yola.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Lamorde died at the age of 61 on Sunday in Egypt, where he had travelled for medical treatment and buried on Monday in Abuja according to Islamic injunction.

    The late assembly member of APC also died on Thursday in India and buried on Monday, according to Islam injunction.

    Wonosikou stated that the period of prayer and mourning began on Monday

    Gov. Fintiri said, “the death of these illustrations sons of Adamawa are moment of the greatest sadness for me and the people of the state.

    “We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished anti-corruption crusader and a much-loved Police officer, Lamorde.

    “I also mourn late Abdulmalik an accomplished legislator.

    “I know their loss will be deeply felt throughout the state, and by countless people around the country,’’ he said.

    Police arrest man for allegedly sexually assaulting his one-year-old stepdaughter

    The police in Adamawa state have arrested a man who allegedly assaulted his one -year -old step daughter.

    The culprit whose name has been given as Idi Adamu allegedly assaulted his one-year-old stepchild sexually in the house.

    In a statement on Friday, the Command said that Adamu was arrested on Wednesday, following a complaint by the baby’s mother who happens to be his wife.

    According to the statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Ngurore, the suspect is a resident of Wuro Ardo in Mubi North Local Government Area where he committed the act.
    The Police have launched further investigations into the matter.
