FG unveils first LCNG facility in Adamawa

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Mr Ekperikpe Ekpo, on Tuesday unveiled the first Liquefied to Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) facility in North-East Nigeria located in Yola.

Speaking at the event on Tuesday, Ekpo described the development as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s gas sector, particularly for the North-East region.

“Today’s inauguration of the first-ever Liquefied to Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) Facility in the North-East is a powerful testament to the potential of public-private collaboration.

“The LCNG facility is a major step forward in actualising the federal government’s ‘Decade of Gas’ agenda,” he said.

Ekpo commended Greenville LNG for its visionary leadership and bold commitment to expanding access to clean and sustainable energy solutions.

He said the transformative project highlights the federal government’s unrelenting efforts to drive economic growth through gas adoption for national energy security.

The Minister said the Yola LCNG plant represents a turning point for the region, providing opportunities for energy access, job creation and business development.

“For far too long, this region has faced infrastructural challenges that have limited its full economic potential. Greenville LNG is not only delivering energy but delivering hope,” he stated.

Ekpo noted that the project integrates LNG and CNG distribution for use in vehicles and industrial equipment, offering cleaner and cheaper energy alternatives to diesel and petrol.

He reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to supporting private sector investment in the gas value chain.

In his remarks, Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa said the inauguration of the LNG’s refuelling station in Yola, was a strategic milestone for clean energy access and economic diversification in the North-East.

Fintiri, represented by the Deputy Governor, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, praised Greenville LNG for the strategic partnership with the people of Adamawa.

“This commissioning marks yet another significant milestone in our collective journey towards economic diversification, energy sustainability and environmental responsibility not just in Adamawa but in Nigeria.

“The establishment of the L-CNG refuelling station is not just a business venture, it is a strategic partnership with the people of Adamawa State.

“One that promises to unlock opportunities, create jobs and position our state as a hub for clean and affordable energy,” he said.

The Governor noted that the L-CNG station aligns with the state’s development agenda by supporting cheaper, cleaner fuel for public and private transport.

Fintiri emphasised that the choice of Yola for the pioneering project reflects investor confidence in the state’s stability and security, despite past challenges in the region.

The Chairman Greenville LNG, Mr Eddy Broeke, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to actualising the Federal Government’s gas expansion initiative.

Broeke said Greenville plans to build 50 similar units across Nigeria, with completion targeted for the third quarter of 2026 with the support of President Bola Tinubu.

“My role is to bring gas infrastructure to the country, and what we have begun is the rollout of 50 of these units nationwide,” he said.

Broeke commended the Adamawa government for its partnership in expanding access to compressed natural gas (CNG) across the state.

Prove your innocence in court, INEC tells suspended Adamawa REC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has advised the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa, Mr Hudu Yunusa-Ari, to prove his innocence in court rather than through a news conference.

Chief Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, who gave the advice in an interview on Monday in Abuja, said now that Yunusa-Ari was back in the country, he should avail himself the opportunity of exploiting a legal process om his alleged involvement in irregularities in the conduct of the 2023 governorship election in Adamawa.

Yunusa-Ari is facing a six-count charge of unlawful roles in the Adamawa governorship election held on March 18, 2023.

Yunusa-Ari was suspended in April 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari for declaring Aisha Dahiru (popularly known as Binani) of All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the governorship election when collation of results was still ongoing.

INEC, however, declared the announcement null and void and summoned the REC to its headquarters in Abuja, after which he was suspended.

The suspended REC had, at a news conference on Saturday in Bauchi State, faulted his suspension, saying that he was not given fair hearing, while also insisting that Bianani won the election.

Oyekanmi, while reacting to the claims, advised Yunusa-Ari to go and defend himself in the court, not through a news conference.

“In response to your request, our attention has also been drawn to the interview granted by the former REC of Adamawa State, Yunusa-Ari. There is nothing new in what he said.

“In any case, the substantive matter of the 2023 Adamawa State governorship election has been determined through the appropriate judicial process from the trial tribunal to the appeal tribunal and finally settled by the Supreme Court.

“The commission will not comment on the propriety or otherwise of his conduct during the concluding part of the election, as the matter is right now the subject of litigation at the High Court sitting in Yola and, therefore, subjudice

“Now that he is back in the country, the right place to prove his innocence and the propriety of his action is by availing himself for the due process of law and not a press conference,” Oyekanmi said.

Yunusa-Ari had, at the news conference in Bauchi, claimed that he tried multiple times to explain his actions to INEC through letters.

The former REC, who claimed officials were pressured to declare Ahmadu Fintiri of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as winner of the election, argued that he deserved to be heard.

The Federal High Court in Abuja had, in February 2024, dismissed a suit filed by Yunusa-Ari, seeking protection against arrest, detention or prosecution by the police and others.

The presiding judge of the court, James Omotosho, in his judgment, dismissed the suit for lacking merit.

Omotosho held that Yunusa-Ari, in his fundamental rights enforcement suit, made an elaborate show by trying to shield himself from being arrested, detained or prosecuted by security agencies, but that there was no ground where such immunity could have been granted by the court.

In January 2025, Yunusa-Ari also pleaded with the Adamawa High Court to adjourn the case against him sine die (indefinitely).

Recently, the Senate had approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to fire Yunusa-Ari and the RECs of Abia and Sokoto states over alleged misconduct.

  • IPMAN strike in Adamawa: petrol price hit N2,000 per litre

IPMAN strike in Adamawa: petrol price hit N2,000 per litre

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) Adamawa/Taraba chapter, has expressed resolve to continue its ongoing strike even as petrol sells N2,000 per liter.

The IPMAN Chairman, Alhaji Dahiru Buba, who stated this in an interview in Yola on Tuesday, said that the strike was occasioned by incessant harassment of its members and illegal seizures of their tankers carrying petrol by officers of the Nigeria Custom Service (NCS).

He said, customs officers had abandoned their designated areas of operation at the borders and were now targeting legitimate businesses in metropolitan and local government areas.

According to him, these have lead to financial losses, artificial scarcity and hike in products’ prices and the strike is continue until NCS stop their activities.

The strike and attendant high cost of petrol  has resulted in low vehicular movements on the roads.

Abubakar Muhammed, a resident, told NAN that workers and other commuters now find it difficult to get transport to their offices and destinations.

Muhammad explained that this was due to the sharp rise in transport fares as commuters now pay N700 instead of N300 for a drop.

Most fuel stations in Yola are  closed and motorists can only source petrol from black markets in some parts of the metropolis and state.

Recall that on June 10, the Comptroller-General of the NCS, Adewale Adeniyi, during a news briefing in Yola, solicited support and cooperation of all stakeholders in the fight against smuggling, especially of petrol.

He said that smuggling of petroleum products across the country’s borders was a sabotage of the Nigeria’s economy.

Adeniyi therefore solicited the cooperation and support of all Nigerians with security agencies to curb the menace.
