  • Death toll rises in Adamawa mosque explosion

    The death toll in the bomb explosion in a mosque in Adamawa State has risen to 27, the state government said.

    The government also said 56 people were injured in the twin blast in a Mubi town.

    The state Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Ahmad Sajoh, made this known in a statement on Tuesday evening.

    ‎He said the 56 injured persons were on admission in a hospital.

    Mr Sajoh said the blast occurred inside a mosque in Kasuwan Gwanjo (second hand clothes market).

    “While condemning the satanic, cowardly and dastardly act, His Excellency Sen. Mohammed Umar Jibrilla Bindow, the executive Governor of Adamawa State, had ordered the immediate provision of medical supplies and mobilization of medical officers to the general hospital in Mubi.

    “In addition, the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) had been ordered to supply food and non-food items to the hospital to cater for victims and victims relations.”

    Mr Sajoh urged people to donate blood to help injured victims. He asked residents to be more vigilant and reiterated the government’s commitment to the protection of lives and properties of all citizens.

    Earlier, the police in Adamawa confirmed that 24 worshippers were killed‎ in the explosion which occurred while worshippers were holding the Zuhr (afternoon) prayer at about 1:00 p.m yesterday.

    Forgive me if I wrong you, Gov. Bindow begs APC stakeholders

    Gov. Muhammadu Bindow of Adamawa has urged stakeholders and other members of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to forgive him, if he wronged them.

    Bindow made the plea Monday at a stakeholders meeting in Yola to discuss the upcoming party congress.

    “If I offended any of you here please forgive me. I didn’t do that deliberately,” Bindow said.

    The governor assured all the stakeholders that he has no candidate for the coming party congresses, and urged all those seeking positions to go and mobilize support.

    “My administration is ready to work with all those elected in the congresses,” he stressed.

    Bindow expressed satisfaction with the turnout of stakeholders from various interest groups in the state and urged for more unity in the party.

    Speaking at the occasion, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustafa stressed the need to abide by the party guidelines for hitch free congresses.

    “We are one family and must not allow internal political bickering to affects our party in the state.

    “We won in 2015 general election and shall win in 2019, but we need to create a situation that would make it much easier for us to win again,” Mustafa said.

    In his remarks, the APC National Vice Chairman North East, Alhaji Mustafa Salihu, lauded the stakeholders for putting aside their differences to attend the meeting and urged contestants to show sportsmanship.

    “We must work to retain government at all levels; we need to put all our personal interests aside for our party,” Salihu said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that former SGF, Babacir Lawan. who also attended the meeting however criticized the meeting for not discussing the issue of zoning ahead of the congresses.

    According to him, the APC constitution promotes zoning of positions particularly in diverse states like Adamawa and wonder why the issue was not discussed.

  • One dead, 81 quarantined in Adamawa’s Lassa Fever outbreak

    Adamawa Ministry of Health, on Monday, said one person has died from the outbreak of Lassa fever in the state.

    The Information Officer of the ministry, Mr Abubakar Muhammed, made the disclosure in Yola on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

    Muhammed said 81 others had been quarantined following the development.

    He said that 45 members of the deceased’s families and other 36 persons including some health workers who had direct contact with the deceased had also been quarantined.

    Muhammed explained that the state government, World Health Organisation and other collaborative agencies had established an emergency centre in Yola to receive information and quick response.

    He said that the centre would also serve as control centre of the killer disease.

    He said that the deceased, Gadiel Ambe, 46, hailed from Numan Local Government Area of Adamawa.

    Muhammed further explained that the late Ambe before his death was a Nigerian Secutity and Civil Defence Corps officer working in Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba.

    ‘‘According to the record available, late Ambe fell sick in Gembu, Sardauna Local Government Area and he was later referred to Adamawa for treatment.

    ‘‘He was initially admitted at Peace Hospital, a private clinic in Jimeta and after cross examination he was referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola where the hospital management confirmed he was Lassa fever positive,’’ Muhammed said.

  • IDPs protest over shortage of food in Adamawa

    Hundreds of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Fufore and Malkohi camps in Adamawa staged peaceful protests over lack of food in their camps.

    The IDPs mostly Women and Children on Wednesday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in their plight.

    Adamawa has only two designated camps managed by NEMA and they are situated at Fufore and Malkohi villages with a total number of about 3,000 IDPs.

    The IDPs, who mostly are from Borno, were in the two camps for over two years waiting to be evacuated to their state of origin.

    The IDPs in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) complained that many families in the camps were in critical living conditions due to hunger.

    Malam Adamu Bukar from Malkohi camp said that he has one wife and three children and they only eat once in a day.

    “Since early January, when they distributed the normal thirty days food items to us, we have never received anything again.’’ Bukar said.

    According to him, people living in the camp need urgent food intervention, because any moment from now some people, especially children would die of hunger.

    Also speaking, Malam Haruna Bana, from Borno and living in Malkohi camp expressed fear of imminent starvation and malnutrition in the camp.

    Bana said that they received the last food in December 2017 and since then they were not given anything.

    He appealed to Borno government to come to their aid and evacuate them.

    A security officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, at one of the camp also confirmed the situation, saying that the development was a threat to the camp security.

    “On daily basis, the IDPs in sizeable number go out of the camp to look for food, which is a security challenge to the entire people living in the camp,’’ the source said.

    When contacted over the situation, Malam Abbani Imam, the state Coordinator NEMA in charge of Adamawa and Taraba confirmed the development but said the challenge would soon be addressed.

    Imam said that the state office had already informed the NEMA headquarters of the situation and were waiting for the approval to release food to the camps.

     

  • Boko Haram: Adamawa bans visitors from Girls schools

    The Adamawa State government has ordered principals of girls secondary schools not to allow visitors into their school premises.

    The Adamawa State Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aliyu Tola made the disclosure on Monday, while briefing the newsmen on activities outlined by the ministry to commemorate the International Women’s day in the state.

    According to Tola, the state government took the preventive measures apart from the security measures already put in place to avert the abduction of any school girl in the state.

    He said following the abduction of the Dapchi school girls the state government summoned all principals of secondary schools and took statistics of all girls only secondary schools in the state and where they were located, before ordering the principals to control the entry of visitors into such schools.

    “The state government has already taken a decisive action since the Dapchi school girls abduction and part of the measures taken apart from the security measures put in place is to know where all the girls schools are located and to ensure that visitors are not allowed entry into those schools.”

     

  • Rice production: Dangote inaugurates multi billion naira processing plant in Jigawa

    The Dangote Rice Outgrower Scheme in Jigawa State reached a turning point yesterday when the President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote laid a foundation stone for the construction of a multi-billion Naira rice processing mill in Hadin, Jigawa state.

    The mill with capacity to process 16 metric tons of paddy rice per hour, when completed will in a year process paddy rice worth N14 billion bought directly from the famers in Jigawa at market rate.

    Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony in Hadin, Kaugama local government area, Dangote said the commencement of the construction of the integrated rice processing plant was the culmination of series of events which began with the signing of a $1billion agreement with the federal government for the integrated rice production in Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Niger and Jigawa.

    “We have continued to pioneer new approaches to empowering our primary stakeholders and our farmers, through the Dangote outgrowers programme thereby creating thousands of jobs, increasing incomes poverty reduction in rural communities by providing high quality agro-inputs, technical support and secured market for farmers. Also, creating access to finance, mechanization and irrigation services so as to enhance agricultural productivity.”, he stated

    Recalling that the Dangote Rice limited started the outgrowers scheme in 2016 with thousands of hectares of land in Hadejia, Jigawa state, creating over 10,000 jobs (direct and indirect) to farmers, the business mogul said with the new ultra modern mill enough paddy rice will be grown and harvested for processing.

    According to him, the mill which will take only months for installation and commissioning is the first in the series of five other mills coming up in Kano, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi and Niger States in the first phase, while in the second phase, other mills will be built in Nasarawa, Kogi, and other states.

    Said he: When these planned six mills come fully on stream, we will achieve a capacity of seven hundred thousand metric tons per annum of Par boiled rice, which will make Dangote Rice the largest rice producer in Africa and will make a bold step in making Nigeria self-sufficient in Rice production, stop importation Nduka save the nation foreign exchange ”

    Dangote stated further that towards co-creating value for all stakeholders, the company has engaged about 20,000 out growers who are expected to produce an average of 180,000 tons of paddy rice on about 30,000 hectares of land. “We are focused on engaging in the region of 300,000 farmers in the next 12 months when our rice mills are all functional and we achieve steady state.

    “We will continue to launch massive agricultural projects across the country in rice and dairy farming. Our push for backward integration in providing our own raw materials on a massive scale has led to the planned investment of $4.6 billion over the next three years in sugar, rice and dairy production alone. That will eliminate the country’s reliance on imported materials, and the foreign exchange headaches that comes with it.”

    In his opening remarks, the Dangote Group Executive Director, Devakumar Edwin explained that the Dangote Rice team has been involved in scaling up the outgrower operations to a least 5,000 hectares this season and this will very soon increase and grow to over 15,000 hectares cultivated per cycle or season to fully optimise operations.

    He said the establishment of a Multi-billion Naira state-of-the-art integrated rice processing facility to process at least 260 metric tons of rice paddy per day grown which is produced from thousands of local rice out growers within Jigawa state is a giant step forward and expresses his company’s confidence and faith in local farmers to continuously stand with Dangote to make this project a success.

    Located on 25 hectares site in Hadin, Edwin noted that the mill is earmarked to begin operations in the last quarter of 2018. “During the construction phase and when it becomes fully operational, hundreds of employment opportunities will be created, knowledge transference and skills developed among our teeming youthful population thereby boosting local economy.”

    According to him, “the Jigawa famers are in for a good times as the 125, 000 metric tons of paddy rice that this plant requires for processing will be brought from the farmers of Jigawa for an estimated purchase price of N14 billion per annum. This is a huge benefit for the farmers in Jigawa. This mill will be producing high quality parboiled rice that competes with the best in the world this is in-line with our continuous aim to touch the lives of millions who believe in the Dangote brand.

    “Jigawa State is endowed and blessed with vast fertile land, water resources, climate and progressive people, as well as one of the fastest growing agricultural destinations in Nigeria, was identified as an ideal location for us to set up our first facility in Nigeria. This obviously reinforces our commitment to supporting the efforts of the present administration in developing a robust agro-industry in Nigeria.

    “We made commitment to Nigerians that we will produce 1 million metric ton of quality par boiled rice. Since then we have embarked on several initiatives towards achieving this objective with support and collaboration from state and federal government agencies, ministries and departments, non-governmental organisations, community based organisations, traditional and financial institutions, etc., we continue to pioneer new approaches to empowering our primary stakeholders and our farmers, through the Dangote outgrower program thereby creating thousands of jobs, increasing incomes, poverty reduction in rural communities by providing high quality agro-inputs, technical support and secured market for farmers.”

    Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Abubakar Badaru expressed delight at the stage of the Dangote Rice project in the state saying it was in line with the vision of the Invest Jigawa, an organ set up to accelerate investments in the state.

    He said Jigawa is one of the States reputed to be on top on ease of doing business in Nigeria saying the Dangote Rice presence in the state is a pointer to the fact. He added that the state is also in the forefront of the diversification efforts of the federal government from oil to non oil ventures especially agriculture.

    He promised that the state will be willing to do whatever it will take to ensure the Dang9te rice operate smoothly to the satisfaction of .all parties in the state

  • PDP mourns Adamawa spokesman, says ‘Nigeria falling by the day under APC’

    The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has expressed shock over the alleged murder of its spokesperson in Adamawa State, Mr. Sam Zadock, by suspected gunmen.

    Describing him as one “known for his patriotism, dedication to national development and pursuit of the revitalisation of the re-positioned party in the state,” PDP said Zadock’s killing must be investigated.

    The party said this was necessary in the face of “rising speculations over the circumstances surrounding his murder.”

    National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, said in Abuja on Wednesday that it would be wrong “to wave off the killing without full investigation.”

    He said, “While we appreciate the efforts of the military in its response leading to the arrest of some persons, we reject any attempt to wave off this killing without an exhaustive investigation by relevant security agencies and the report must be made public.

    “The PDP is particularly appalled by the fact that our nation is failing by the day, following the inability of the Federal Government to ensure a peaceful Nigeria and to provide adequate security for our citizens.

    “On a daily basis, the nation is inundated by news of gruesome killings and unrelenting violence across the country, with Nigerians being hacked down or abducted by marauders and insurgents under the … All Progressives Congress-led government, which has failed to take decisive steps to stem the ugly tide.

    “Gradually, our nation is being turned into a funeral parlour with bloodletting in Benue, Taraba, Adamawa, Yobe, Kaduna, Zamfara, Enugu, Kogi, Ebonyi, Edo, Plateau, Nassarawa and other states across the country.

    “Indeed, we cannot continue to lose our fine, bright and talented citizens to bandits, while those vested with the mandate to protect them are more interested in their … 2019 re-election.”

    He added, “The national leadership of our party, therefore, demand an urgent action by the Buhari-led Federal Government to restore peace and end the violence in the land, even as we urge the security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into the killing of Zadock. ”

    He called on members of the party in Adamawa State and across the country to remain calm, assuring them that the leadership of the party at the national level will continue to engage the security agencies until it gets to the root of the matter.

  • Violence: Gunmen kill PDP Publicity Secretary in Adamawa

    The Adamawa Chapter of People’s Democratic Party has confirmed the killing of its spokesman, Mr Sam Zadock, by gunmen in the latest sectarian violence in the state.

    The State Secretary of the PDP, Alhaji Abdullahi Prambe, told newsmen on Wednesday in Yola that the incident was a “big shock’’ to the party.

    “We were expecting him for a meeting yesterday but he didn’t show up; he called me but the network wasn’t good only for us to hear that he was killed in an attack,” Prambe said.

    He condemned the incident and called on government to do something about the recent killings in the state.

    Speaking on the incident, a youth leader in the area, Mr Paul Turaki, said Zadock was killed with four others traveling in the same car in an ambush around Barre village in Demsa Local Government Area.

    An army spokesman in the area, Brig. Gen. Texas Chukwu, said in a statement that 10 suspected gunmen involved in the attack were killed while six others were arrested.

     

  • Operation Cat Race: Troops kill 10, arrest 6 herdsmen who set Adamawa village on fire

    The Nigerian Army said troops of 101 Special Forces Battalion on Exercise Ayem Akpatuma (Cat Race) have arrested six notorious herdsmen who invaded and set on fire Gwamba village in Numan Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

    In a statement, the Nigerian Army said “despite swift reaction to rescue the village from destruction, the notorious herdsmen set the village ablaze before troops arrival. The determine troops trailed the herdsmen and arrested 6 of them at Garigiji village while trying to escape”.

    According to the statement, during the process of the arrest, the herdsmen showed resistance, which made the alerted troops to engaged them killing 10.

    TheNewsGuru reports items recovered from the herdsmen are: one AK 47 rifle, 41 rounds of 7.62mm special, one locally made rifle with 25 cartridges & one cutlass among others.

    The troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion deployed at Numan Local Government Area of Adamawa state swiftly responded to the distress call and supported the troops at Gwamba village under attack by herdsmen on Tuesday 27 February 2018.

     

  • Gunmen invade Adamawa, attack residents

    Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have invaded Gwamba community in Demsa Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

    According to eyewitnesses, the attackers stormed two villages in the community at on Tuesday morning and opened fire.

    Several houses are reported to have been set ablaze, while the residents fled in different directions.

    Details of the casualties are yet to be ascertained while security forces have been reportedly drafted to the area to contain the attack.
