    Adamawa kingmakers, others pay homage to Atiku as new Waziri

    Kingmakers, Councillors and District Heads of Adamawa Emirate Council on Saturday paid homage and solidarity to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his appointment as the new Waziri of Adamawa.

    TheNewsGuru.com reports that the appointment of Atiku made him the next in hierarchy in the emirate to the Lamido of Adamawa.

    Speaking on behalf of the kingmakers and others, the Galadima of Adamawa, Alhaji Mustafa Aminu, congratulated Atiku and pledged their loyalty to him.

    “Congratulations and may God guide you and give you long life and good health to discharge this deserving responsibility.

    “You are fit for this position because of your total loyalty and support to the development of the emirate.

    “Since independence of Nigeria, no citizen of the emirate had shown love and patriotism to Adamawa.

    ‘’You promoted Adamawa to the world and may Allah bless you and give you more health and long life to continue the good work,” Aminu said.

    Responding, Atiku thanked them for the visit and called for more unity in developing Adamawa.

    “I want to thank God for this day and to use this opportunity to thank Lamido of Adamawa for giving me the position of Waziri, and that of Turaki to my son, Aliyu who is the grandson of Late Lamido Aliyu Mustafa.

    “I want to thank you for this visit to pay homage and celebrate with me so that we can unite and work together for the progress of the land and our people,” Atiku said.

    He also thanked friends and well-wishers in Adamawa, Nigeria and worldwide who felicitated with him over the new appointment.

    Highlights of the occasion was the offering of special prayers and the presentation of the official number plate of number two man in the emirate to Atiku.

    Bindow approves N500million for payment of pension arrears

    Governor Mohammed Bindow of Adamawa on Tuesday directed the state Pension Board to commence the payment of pension and gratuity arrears to pensioners in the state.

    Bindow gave the directive while playing host to members of the board who paid him a courtesy call in Yola.

    The governor expressed concern over the plights of the pensioners, saying that their challenges would soon become a thing of the past.

    He urged the board to be prudent in the management of pension funds.

    According to him, the delay in the payment of pensions was as a result of the negligence on the part of the previous administration which failed to remit funds for the payment of pensions.

    He said that a committee was working out the modalities to migrate all pensioners to e-payment and end the challenges facing pensioners in the state.

    Earlier, Alhaji Ahmadu Njidda, the Chairman of the board, commended the governor for approving N500 million for the payment of pension and gratuity arrears.

    Njidda said the board would soon commence the payment of arrears owed from January 2017 till date, adding that the board was still screening the pensioners.

    He urged the governor to increase the monthly allocation to the office to enable them to offset the accumulated arrears for more than 10,000 pensioners.

    TheNewsGuru.com reports that the state government had earlier earmarked N1 billion for the payment of pension’s arrears from the first batch of the Paris Club refund.

    TheNewsGuru.com also reports that while N500 million was allocated to the local government pension board, N500 million was also allocated to the state pension board for the payment of pension and gratuity arrears in the state.

    Many feared killed, injured in multiple bomb blasts in Adamawa

    Three bombs have exploded in Madagali town in the northern part of Adamawa State, killing many people.

    An eye witness who simply identified himself as Baba, said the blast occurred near a checkpoint at the entrance of the town.

    “We heard three blasts near the checkpoint where people gathered to be screened before entering the town as you know today is market day.

    “The suicide bombers blew themselves up alongside the two vigilante members that approached them,” Baba said.

    Speaking on the development, the member representing Madagali/Michika Federal Constituency, Mr Adamu Kamale, said he got the report but that the information showed that there was no death.

    “Information available to me showed that there was no death in the blast, except that some people sustained injuries,” Kamale said.

    He called for more deployment of troops to comb the Madagali axis of Sambisa which he said was still habouring insurgents.

    When contacted, the Chairman of Madagali Local Government, Alhaji Yusuf Mohammed, also confirmed the incident but said he could not give details because he was not in town.

    “I was outside the town for an official engagement but I was called and informed about the incident. That is all I can tell you for now,” Mohammed said.

    Recall than on January 4, three female suicide bombers who were on their way to Gulak market in Madagali Local Government Area were intercepted by the vigilante.

    Boko Haram: Adamawa Govt sets up committee to shut IDPs camps

    Adamawa Government on Wednesday said it has set up a committee to handle all the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps that would be shut down in the state.

    Alhaji Ahmed Sajoh, the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, made this known while briefing newsmen on the outcome of a security meeting in Yola.

    Recall that the state government had on Dec. 28 announced that all Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in the state would be shut down in January.

    Sajoh said that the committee would liaise with all relevant stakeholders on how to evacuate the IDPs to their respective states.

    “At the meeting, a committee was set up to consolidate the evacuation of the remaining IDPs and to shut down the camps.

    “The committee will also collaborate with all relevant stakeholders on IDPs matters to ensure smooth and effective evacuation of the IDPs,” Sajoh said.

    He said that the meeting also resolved on the need for a massive enlightenment of the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious movement.

  • Female suicide bombers get killed by vigilantes in Adamawa

    Three suspected female suicide bombers attempting to enter the Gulak market at Adamawa state were shot dead by members of a vigilante group in Madagali Local Government Area on Wednesday.

    Gulak is the headquarters of Madagali Local Government Area.

    The Chairman of the local government, Alhaji Yusuf Mohammed, who confirmed the development to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the suspected suicide bombers were sighted from a distance by the vigilantes, who were on patrol around the Bakin Dutse area.

    He said suspects were ordered by the vigilantes to stop, but they refused.

    “The shots by the vigilantes detonated the explosives on two of the suspected bombers.

    “Although the explosive device on the third suspect did not set off, the explosion of the devices on the two other suspects, killed her.

    “We suspect the bombers were on their way to Gulak market as today is the market day,” Mohammed said.

    When contacted, the spokesman of the 28 Task-Force Battalion, Mubi, Maj. Akintoye Badare confirmed the incident, which he said occurred at about 10am at Bakin Dutse, near Gulak town.

    Badare did not say whether the suspected female bombers were children or adults.

    “Things are now okay. Our men are at alert as usual,” Badare said.

    NAN recalled that the Army had on Tuesday repelled attacks from some fleeing insurgents at Dar village in the same local government.

  • Police to demolish recovered IEDs from insurgents in Adamawa

    …urges residents to go about their normal businesses without panic

    The Adamawa Police Command, said on Thursday, that it would destroy Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), which had been recovered from insurgents in the area over the years.

    A statement signed by SP Othman Abubakar, the command’s Public Relations Officer, said the IEDs would be destroyed on Saturday at the military shooting range at Mayo-Ine in Fufore Local Government Area.

    Abubakar urged the public not to panic during the exercise but to go about their normal businesses.

    “The Adamawa State Police Command informs the public that the Anti-Bomb Squad will carry out demolition exercise of some recovered IEDs at the military shooting range at Mayo-Ine,” he said.

    It will be recalled that on Feb. 25, there was an accidental blast at the Anti-Bomb Squad headquarters in Jimeta, Yola, where the IEDs were then kept, resulting in the loss of lives and property.

  • Buhari sends delegation to victims of Madagali Bomb Blast in Adamawa

    A Presidential delegation led by the Special Adviser on Policy Development and Strategy, Alhaji Ibrahim Bapetel, visits Michika, Adamawa to console with government and victims of Madagali twin bomb blast.

    Presenting drugs, consumables and money to the victims at Michika General Hospital on Tuesday, Bapetel said President Muhammadu Buhari was concern with their plight.

    According to Bapetel, the president wants to assure you that his administration is committed to containing the insurgency.

    “Mr president has received with deep shock, the news of the unfortunate incident and immediately directed me to come and commiserate with you, identify with your plight and assess your health condition.”

    Receiving the items, the Principal Medical Officer of Michika Gerneral Hospital, Dr Tanko Bathuel, thanked the delegation and promised to utilise the drugs and other items donated judiciously.

    Also briefing the delegation, Regimental Medical Officer of 115 Battalion Michika, Lt. Abdul Saliu, said that five patients out of the 76 admitted in the hospital had died.

    According to him, the remaining ones are responding to treatment as eight of them have undergone major surgery.

    The Chairman of Madagali Local Government, Alhaji Yusuf Mohammed, who also briefed the delegation, thanked them for the gesture.

    Mohammed said that normalcy had returned to the area and the people were now going about their normal businesses.

    Reacting, one of the victims of the blasts, Sajoh Buba, thanked the delegation for the support.

    Buba also lauded other groups and organisations such as Military Medical Corps, NEMA and Red Cross for their support.

    Buhari condoles with families of victims of Madagali blasts

    President Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with families of victims of the twin bomb blasts in Madagali, Adamawa, which claimed some lives and injured several others on Friday.

    The President also condoled with the Government and people of the state over the unfortunate incident, assuring them that they were not alone as the rest of nation was mourning the grave loss with them.

    In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu in Abuja yesterday, Buhari restated that “putting an end to this senseless loss of innocent lives remains a top priority of this administration”.

    According to him, over the past few weeks, the Nigerian military have made significant advancements in an offensive aimed at slamming the final nail in the coffin of Boko Haram.

    “This latest attack is obviously an act of desperation, but the Nigerian military will neither be distracted nor relent.”

    Buhari urged Nigerians to be more vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity to the nearest security and law enforcement agency.

    “The battle against terrorism is a joint effort involving all citizens, both government and governed. Together, Nigerians can and will defeat the evil that is Boko Haram,” he declared.

    The President prayed that God would comfort the bereaved families and wished the injured ones speedy recovery.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mr Yusuf Muhammed, Chairman, Madagali Local Government, Adamawa, confirmed that 56 persons died and 177 were injured in the twin blasts.

    Muhammed, who confirmed the development in a telephone interview, said 57 of the injured were critical and 120 minor.

    He said the critically injured were rushed to Mubi General Hospital and Yola Specialists Hospital, while those that sustained minor injuries were treated and discharged .

    NAN reports that the Madagali Market operates on Fridays and the two blasts occurred at the grains and second- hand clothes sections of the market.
