    Just In: Another guber candidate is dead

    The governorship candidate of the National Rescue Movement in Adamawa State, Alhaji Aliyu Maina, was on Thursday confirmed dead one month to the general election.

    Maina died the same day that Prof Eleazar Ikonne died at the National Hospital Abuja.

    He was said to have died on Wednesday, January 25 after a brief illness in Abuja, the same day the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abia State, Prof. Uchenna Ikonne, was confirmed dead.

    The National Publicity Secretary of the NRM, Olusola Afuye, confirmed the incident in a statement.

    According to the statement from the family, late Alhaji Abba Maina died on Wednesday, January 25 at his residence in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, after a brief illness.

    He has been buried according to Muslim rite. We pray to Almighty Allah to protect his family and all his loved ones.

    “We are also calling on all his family members, business and political associates to show late Maina’s family love and care during this mourning period.

    Adamawa agog as Buhari arrives Yola for political campaign

    The ancient town of Yola in Adamawa is full of activities as President Mammadu Buhari is expected to arrive the state for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rally.

    Newsmen reports that Buhari is expected to arrive the Yola Internatinal Airport by 10.30 a.m for the event on Monday.

    Adequate security measures had been put in place following strategic deployment of security personnel within and outside the Mahmud Ribadu Square venue of the event.

    On arrival, the president is expected to pay homage to the paramount ruler of the state and Lamido Adamawa, Alhaji Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha, after which he would proceed to the venue of the meeting.

    Newsmen also reports that politicians, well wishers, especially the loyalists of the APC, have been mobilised in anticipation of the arrival of the august visitor.

    Mr Samaila Tadawus, the state APC Chairman, expressed optimism that the coming of the president would further increase the electoral chances of the party, saying Buhari’s presence will definitely add value to our candidates.

    Tadawus said the party was heading for victory in all future elections, especially in the state governorship election where a female candidate, Sen. Aishatu Binani, is contesting.

    Appeal Court declares Binani APC Governorship candidate In Adamawa

    The Appeal Court in Yola, Adamawa, has declared Sen. Aishatu Binani as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the state.

    The court presided over by Justices Tani Hassan, Mistura Bolaji-Yusuf and James Abundaga respectively set aside the judgment of a Federal High Court which nullified the governorship primary and declared that APC has no candidate for the 2023 governorship election.

    The justices ordered that the name of Binani be submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the flag bearer for the election

    On Oct. 14, a Federal High court sitting in Yola, had nullified the governorship primary that produced Binani, declaring that the party had no candidate for the forthcoming governorship elections.

    The case was filed by Malam Nuhu Ribadu, a former Chairman of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), challenging the APC governorship primary over alleged irregularities, and demanding for fresh primaries.

    Binani had scored 430 votes to defeat her closest opponent, Ribadu, who polled 288 votes in the election.

    NAN reports that the Federal High Court judge, in that ruling, by Justice Abdulaaziz Anka held that the APC had no candidate for the 2023 governorship election in the state.

    Anka also ordered Binani, who was earlier declared winner of the election to stop parading herself as the party’s candidate for the 2023 governorship election.

    The court held that the APC governorship primary election held on May 26, was marred with irregularities such as over voting, and non compliance with the 2022 Electoral Act and the party’s constitution.

    INEC laments poor rate of collection of PVC in Adamawa

    The Adamawa office of the National Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), has lamented the poor pace of collection of outstanding voter cards by the electorate in the state.

    Mallam Hudu Yunusa, the newly-deployed Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, expressed the concern at a news conference at the premises of the commission in Yola on Friday.

    He said over 200,000 PVCs, registered since 2019, were lying idle in the offices of the commission across the 21 local government areas.

    He said 36,000 additional voters had been registered during 2022 voter registration.

    “Some of the voter cards are yet to be collected by their original enrollees. ”

    He appealed to the media and the stakeholders to continue to sensitive the electorate to the imperative of the voter cards, stressing the card qualified one as eligible voter.

    The REC, explained that the commission recieved delivery of 4,104 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the Result Viewing Portal for deployment to 4,104 polling units for the elections.

    He said the state would host a week long Northeast zonal Technology Training in elections in batches, saying the participants were drawn from Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi and Taraba states.

    Yunusa appealed to politicians and political parties to conduct themselves with decency, discipline and decorum during their campaigns, stressing that campaigns should be issue-based.

    “We call on the politicians to avoid name dropping, provocative comments, violence, thuggery and engagement of militia,” he said.

    “The Electoral Act prohibits campaigns in worship and public offices, so such attitude would not be condoned by the commission,” he added.

    He said the commission had updated the staff skills through capacity building trainings, seminars and workshops on election issues and processes.

    According to him, the commission has so far recorded 10,000 people who applied to work as ad hoc staff out of the targeted 16,000 required temporary staff for the polls.

    “The commission’s ad hoc staff recruitment portal is still active upto Dec. 14, 2022; we therefore, call on intersted and qualified Nigerians to apply,” he said.

    He said the commission would engage stakeholders on the conduct of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) voting, saying “we would focus our attention on Madagali, Fufore and Yola South local government areas.

    “We are currently displaying the Preliminary Register of Voters (PRV) nationwide from 12th to 28th November 2022 for claims and objections, ” he disclosed.

    Adamawa assembly okays establishment of anti-corruption commission

    The Adamawa House of Assembly has passed a bill for a law to establish an anti-corruption commission, in its efforts to fight corrupt activities in the state.

    Alhaji Aminu Iya -Abbas, Speaker of the assembly made this known in an interview with newsmen in Yola on Tuesday.

    The anti-graft commission,mIya-Abbas said, is expected to complement the effort of other agencies in fighting corruption in the state.

    ”The agency when set up, will promote accountability and transparency as well as address financial crimes.

    ”The bill for a law to provide for the establishment of the Adamawa State Anti Corruption Commission, was sponsored during plenary by Malam Abubakar Isah, PDP-Shellang constituency,” he said.

    Iya-Abbas said the assmbly has directed the clerk to the house to prepare and forward a draft copy of the bill to Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri for assent.

    Man chops wife to death with cutlass for touching his phone without permission

    A 37-YEAR-OLD Mutasa man last weekend gruesomely hacked his wife on the neck, shoulder, chest and mouth with a machete after she took his cellphone and unlocked it without his consent, hardly three months into the couple’s marriage.

    Mirriam Joni (27) died on the spot from the injuries sustained during the brutal and heartless attack.

    Police confirmed the murder which happened in Matsapa Village in Chief Mutasa’s area last week on Saturday.

    Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident and said the suspect, Gwaramba Jimu, disappeared from the scene soon after committing the heinous act.

    It is alleged that a few minutes before vanishing from the scene, Jimu instructed his mother, Ms Kandala Maluwiza (72), to take care of his children when he was gone.

    “The two who were customarily married for three months had a domestic dispute after Joni took Jimu’s phone without his consent. After a heated altercation, Jimu went to his aunt, Ms Netsai Jolomile (48) of Mhandire Village, to ask her to solve the dispute.

    “Ms Jolomile accompanied Jimu back to his home and she counselled the couple, advising them to live in peace. Ms Jolomile left the couple and went back home.

    “On October 28, at around 2am, Jimu woke up and armed himself with a machete. He hacked Miriam several times on the shoulder, neck, chest and mouth,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

    He said after the heinous act, Jimu proceeded to his mother, Ms Maluwiza’s homestead in the same village and told her to take care of his children. He then disappeared.

    “Ms Maluwiza became suspicious and proceeded to Jimu’s homestead. Upon arrival, she saw Joni’s body lying in a pool of blood. She alerted other villagers.

    “A report was made to the police who attended the scene,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

    The All Progressive Congress (APC) in Adamawa has confirmed the resignation of Sen. Aishatu Binani as Coordinator, Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) in Adamawa.

    Mr Raymond Chidama ,state party secretary gave the confirmation while speaking with newsmen after the party’s stakeholders meeting in Yola on Friday.

    He said her resignation followed the nullification of the primary that produced her as the party’s governorship candidate by the Federal High Court,Yola.

    “Just this morning we saw her letter of stepping down from that responsibility”, he said.

    Chindama said Mr Babale Martins,deputy governor to former Gov. Muhammad Bindow,was now to co-ordinate the campaign council in the state.

    According to him, all party candidates, from presidential down to state assembly, were also coordinators for their respective constituencies.

    He said that the party had finally resolved at the meeting that the local government party chairmen should come with an all- inclusive list that reflect all the areas for the campaign team.

    “The party has directed all local government chairmen of the party to go back and meet to come back with formidable list that will be acceptable to all that will serve as the PCC in the state and operate at each level.

    “As you are aware there is a PCC list from national level for the state, that list will not be affected ”, he said.

    The Federal High Court sitting in Yola on Oct. 14 nullified the Adamawa governorship primary of the APC which produced Sen. Aishatu Binani, as the party’s gubernatorial candidate for 2023 .

    Ruling on the case filed by Malam Nuhu Ribadu, the court declared Binani’s candidature null and void.

    Police arrest 5 suspected kidnappers in Adamawa

    The Police Command in Adamawa has arrested five suspected kidnappers in Mubi North Local Government Area of the state.

    This is contained in a statement by the Spokesman of the Command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, in Yola on Friday.

    He said the suspects allegedly kidnapped an eight-year old boy (names withheld) and collected N4.079 million ransom from the victim’s family.

    He said the suspects locked the victim for two days in a hotel at Maraba Mubi area where the operatives of the Command arrested them.

    The spokesman said the Police freed the victim and recovered N4.079 million from the suspects.

    “The operation carried out by the Command’s operatives attached to the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB), yielded positive result as the sum of N4.079 million ransom was recovered.

    “The outcome of this success followed a report received about the kidnapping of an eight-year-old boy in Mubi, and the suspects took him to a hotel at Maraba Mubi,” he said.

    The Command, he said, after receiving the report, promptly mobilised an intelligence-led driven strategy and apprehended the suspects aged between 19 and 21.

    The statement quoted the Commissioner of Police, Sikiru Akande, as commending the officers for professional conduct and urged them to sustain the tempo to checkmate criminal activities in the state .

    While reitrating commitment of the Command to protect lives and property, Akande urged the people to provide credible information to security agencies on suspecious persons and movements in their communities.

    Just In: APC chairman officially resigns in Adamawa

    The crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adamawa chapter is finally over as Alhaji Ibrahim Bilal officially resigns as chairman.

    Bilal had in a letter dated September 13, 2022, addressed to the national chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, through the North East national vice chairman, informed the national secretariat of the party of his decision to step down from his position.

    The letter read in part: “I write to inform you that I am resigning from my elected position as the Adamawa state chairman of our great Party (APC) immediately.

    “While the constitution of APC requires me to occupy the office until 2026, I will be grateful if I could cease from becoming the state chairman immediately.

    “I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this sudden news may cause. Grateful, for the fantastic opportunities you have offered me to serve this great party in Adamawa State. I wish to thank you personally for your graciousness and leadership.”

    Ahead of next general elections, Bilal assured the party faithful in the North East state of his commitment to the ideals of the party.

    Checks revealed that the national vice chairman, North-east, Mr. Salihu Mustapha, in a similar letter addressed to the APC national chairman dated September 13th said Bilal resigned his position following meetings and consultations across all levels of the party in the state.

    According to him, “Sequel to the various consultations and meetings cutting across different levels of the party, I write to inform you that the chairman Adamawa state APC chapter, Alhaji Ibrahim Bilal, has tendered his immediate resignation.

    “By virtue of his resignation, Samaila Tadawus (the deputy chairman) has assumed office as the acting chairman pending ratification by the National Working Committee (SWC) of the party.”

    The Adamawa State publicity secretary, Honourable Mohammed Abdullahi, flanked by other state executive members said the state working committee has accepted the resignation of Bilal.

    Abdullahi said while Bilal resigned from the party on personal grounds, he remained a loyal, dedicated and committed stakeholder of the party and would take up a national assignment that’s in the best interest of the party and the state.

    “The SWC has substantially accepted his explanation which is hinged on the expediency of time and the need to meet datelines.”

    Abdulahi said the SWC appreciated the various roles played by the former chairman and all the stakeholders in building and promoting the party in the state.

    The party spokesperson said with this development, the APC in Adamawa state remained a united family that is desirous of ensuring victory for all its candidates in the forthcoming general election under the leadership of the acting chairman, Tadawus.

    APC executives pass vote of no confidence on Chairman

    The Adamawa State executive committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has passed a vote of no confidence on the state chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Bilal, over gross misconduct.

    A statement signed by the executives in Yola stated that the action followed the failure of the chairman to respond to some allegations of gross misconduct leveled against him as provided for in the constitution.

    “We, the undersigned members of the state executive committee of the APC in Adamawa have passed a vote of no confidence on the chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Bilal, over gross misconduct.

    “On the 26 Aug.,  25 members of the state executive committee, issued a formal complaint to three executive officers of the party over constitutional violations which constitute gross misconduct in line with the spirit of fair hearing as provided by the constitution.

    “The persons involved are the chairman of the party, Alhaji Ibrahim Bilal, the secretary, Mr Raymond Chidama and the treasurer,  Alhaji Yahya Hammanjulde.

    “They were given seven-day grace to respond to the allegations which elapsed on Thursday.”

    According to the acting Chairman, Mr Samaíla Tadawus, the secretary and the treasurer acknowledged receipt of the petition and promised to respond soon, while Bilal refused to respond.

    He added, ”there are a plethora of petitions at the secretariat addressed to the chairman, but he hadn’t sat down at the secretariat for a second for over two months making the petitions to remain unaddressed.
    ‘That forced some of the complainants to leave the party.

    “As a result of this gross failure, it was resolved that article 21.5 (vi) of the party’s constitution should be invoked.

    ”This vested in us with the powers to pass a vote of no confidence on him.”

    Reacting,  Bilal debunked his impeachment, saying that he remains the party chairman as only the National Working Committee of the APC, reserves the power to remove an elected chairman of the party.

    “I still remain APC party chairman in Adamawa. This needs to be restated so as not to mislead the uninformed.

    ”Only the National Working Committee, of the APC, reserves the power in a dispute or crisis to remove an elected chairman of the party.

    “Our party guidelines are clear on this issue,” Bilal declared.

    He stated he was  encouraged by the ”outpouring of goodwill from party stakeholders who have said these grave desecration of the rule of law will never be allowed to prevail. ”

    He thanked all APC faithful’s in the state, who have called to express their solidarity to him.

    Bilal added: ”I want to reassure our party stakeholders to disregard the actions of motley crowd, of lies within, acting the script of the opposition to plunge the party into crisis.

    “I want to urge every party member to remain calm as I remain the chairman of the APC in Adamawa.

    ”By Allah’s grace,  I will serve out the remainder of my tenure, and lead  our party to victory, come next year’s general elections.

    Meanwhile, Sen. Ilesha Abbo (APC-Adamawa North), has cautioned stakeholders of the party against instigating crisis in it.

    Mr Abbo, made this known in a statement in Yola on Tuesday. saying, ” the party was heading for victory not internal wranglings.”

    He described the current crisis rocking the party as ”baseless, saddening, unfounded and unfortunate.”

    Abbo, who pledged support to the leadership of the incumbent chairman, stressed the need for unity and understanding within the party.

    “We won’t allow moles to destroy the party and we are solidly behind the leadership of Bilal.

    “As politicians, we should always deploy political solutions to political problems, not envy and hate capable of destroying the party,” he urged. (
