Gunmen kidnap police inspector, five others in Adamawa

Gunmen have kidnapped a police inspector, a councillor, two wives of a famous hunter and two other persons in Koma, a famous rural community in Adamawa State.

The assailants seized the six from their homes during what has been described as a daring night raid in the otherwise quiet Koma settlement in Jada local government area.

In the course of their operation in the early hours of Thursday, the attackers killed one resident who might have come across as a threat.

The gunmen were said to have entered Koma in large numbers and visited their targets, picking them from their houses one after the other.

“Those villains calmly carried out their evil intent and left, as freely as they came,” a source said.

Those abducted have been identified as Inspector Yakubu; Hon Bulus Geoffrey (the councillor for Koma Ward); Hammanjida Hammanjalo; Hajiya Amina and two wives of Mallam Hassan, a famous hunter.

The deceased was identified simply as Wawu.

Recounting how the hunter’s wives became victims, a source said the suspected kidnappers “visited the house of Malam Hassan who is one of the popular hunters in the area probably to kill him but they didn’t meet him in his house. So they abducted his two wives.”

Hunters and policemen seem to have become targets of kidnappers in Adamawa.

On July 7, a police inspector was abducted during a highway operation on the Numan-Yola road.

The attraction to hunters may be a matter of vengeance as hunters have been collaborating with police in the fight against kidnappers across Adamawa State.

Adamawa Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Sulaiman Nguroje, who confirmed the Koma abductions, said the command was on the move against the assailants.

“The Police, in conjunction with the local hunters, are currently on the trail of the suspects.

‘’We want to assure all those concerned that we will get the victims freed and the suspects arrested,” the police image maker said.

  • Like Borno! Adamawa, Gombe states suspends lockdown, lift ban on religious activities

Like Borno! Adamawa, Gombe states suspends lockdown, lift ban on religious activities

Adamawa and Gombe States have joined Borno States among the northeastern states to Suspend the lockdown orders meant to tame the spread of Covid-19.

Adamawa state governor Ahmadu Fintiri announced the suspension of the Lockdown in his state in a statement sent to TNG on Thursday evening.

According to Fintiri, “….Churches, mosques and the international cattle markets under lockdown can now reopen, but must ensure social distancing with no more than fifty people at a time. Other measures include provision of hand sanitizers or washing of hands and temperature checks at the point of entry”

He added that “….Government now believe s the contagion rate is low enough to justify a cautious easing of the restriction, but warned that citizens must work extra hard on personal hygiene and strict adherence to laid down guidelines….’

For it’s part the Gombe State Government announced the suspension of lockdown in the state after a meeting with religious leaders in Gombe. Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, also in a statement said places of worship could be opened, only when members wear face masks, keep social and physical distance, as well as maintain regular hands washing and the use of hand sanitizers.

Governor Yahaya said members of aid groups in mosques and the Boys Brigade in churches would be trained to ensure full compliance and the enforcement of the protective measures.

He said face masks would be distributed across all worship centres, but urged people to make durable face masks for themselves, so that they could rewash and reuse.

The Gombe State Governor also said, “whenever the commodities were supplied to the state, the places of worship would be given their own share”.

He, however, warned that any violation of the measures would force him to reverse the decision to ease the lockdown, because “he would not afford to compromise the health of the people of the state”.

The Governor cited examples in some parts of the world, where such ease was introduced, only to escalate the rate of infections in those countries.

He called on the religious leaders to ensure that the conditions agreed on by both religions in the state were adhered to.

  • Sacked Adamawa commissioners demand reinstatement

    Sacked Adamawa commissioners demand reinstatement

Sacked commissioners in the Adamawa Civil Service Commission on Wednesday urged the State Government to obey a Court Order for their reinstatement.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the affected five commissioners were appointed by the immediate past administration of Sen. Umaru Bindow on April 15, 2019, to serve a 5-year tenure.

They were however removed from office on June 6, 2019, by Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri, shortly after assuming duty.

This followed the dissolution of all chairmen, members of boards, parastatals and commissions by the new administration in the state.

Addressing newsmen on behalf of his colleagues, the ex-Commissioner 1 of the commission, Mr Mohammed Mayas, said in Yola that the state government had disregard the court order for their reinstatement.

Mayas said that they challenged the Adamawa government and State House of Assembly before the National Industrial Court in Yola for illegal dissolution.

He explained that the court ruled on June 6, 2019, that their dissolution and subsequent termination of appointment of the Chairman and four commissioners had contravened the law.

He said the court held that the dissolution and/or termination of the appointments was ultra vires the powers of the governor, and therefore, unconstitutional, null and void.

Mayas quoted the court order as saying: “A declaration that the claimants as Chairman and Commissioners respectively of the Adamawa state Civil Service Commission, having been appointed by the then governor of Adamawa state, upon confirmation by the state Assembly, are entitled to a guaranteed tenure of five years.

“A declaration that by the clear provisions of Section 199(1-) (c) and 201(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), the respondents cannot validly suspend, dissolve, remove or terminate the appointments of the claimants as Chairman and Commissioners of the Adamawa state Civil Service Commission.

“An order, setting aside the purported dissolution and or suspension of the appointments of the claimants as Chairman and Commissioners is null, void and of no effect.

“An order that the claimants are entitled to their salaries and allowances from 15/04/2019 to 14/04/2024 unless otherwise removed for inability to discharge the functions of their offices.”

He complained that since delivery of the judgment by Justice K.D Damulak on June 6, 2019, the state government had not recognised nor paid them their salaries or entitlements.

He listed those that instituted the suit to include himself; Shuaibu Bobbo, the ex-Chairman of the commission; Amina Kabiru, Commissioner 2; Aliyu Sadiq, Commissioner 3; and Shehu Audu, Commissioner 4.

Reacting to the development, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Afraimu Jingi, however said he was not aware about the case nor the court order.

“The claimants should go and publish the alleged Court Order, because as far as I am concern I don’t know anything about that case,” Jingi said.

  • COVID-19: Adamawa denies receiving 42 patients from Gombe

COVID-19: Adamawa denies receiving 42 patients from Gombe

The Adamawa state Government on Sunday denied receiving 42 COVID-19 patients from Gombe state government.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that an online paper on Saturday reported the alleged transfer of the patients by Gombe state.

Reacting to the development, Mr Basheer Ahmed, the Secretary to the Adamawa State Government, described the reports as “untrue”.

Ahmed, who is the Adamawa Chairman of COVID-19 Containment Committee, told NAN that the state received only 38 travellers from Gombe.

He said that the samples of the travellers were sent to Abuja laboratory for test and results of 29 came back as negative.

“It is incorrect to say 42 COVID-19 patients of Adamawa origin were handed over to Adamawa government from Gombe state.

“During lockdown the governors had agreed on interstate travel ban and all persons travelling to a state are to be quarantined and observed for 14 days.

“And based on this protocol, Gombe state had actually handed over 38 of such travellers of Adamawa origin to us,” Ahmed said.

He further stated that based on the advice of World Health Organisation technical partners, the remaining nine travellers were advised to go on self-isolation for 14 days.

  • Adamawa IDPs reject NEMA’s food intervention

The aggrieved Internally Displaced Persons in Fufore International Transit camp, in Adamawa, have rejected the foodstuffs supplied to them by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the IDPs on Wednesday staged a protest over shortage of food in the camp

They said NEMA had not supplied food to them for four months.

NAN reports that the Fufore International transit camp housing more than 1500 IDPs, is located near Fufore town, Fufore local government area, of Adamawa.

Malam Umar Bakura, spokesperson of the IIDPs, told NAN on Friday, in Yola, that they rejected the foodstuffs because it was contaminanted and would not go round to all the IDPs.

“We are about 1,500 Internally Displaced Persons including children, women, orphans and elderly people living in the Fufore camp.

”There are over 200 households in the camp and NEMA used to supply a total of 660 bags of 25 kg and 330 bags of soybean of 25 kg among the households for the period of one month.

“But today (Friday) NEMA came with 220 contaminanted rice of 25 kg and 300 bags of soybean of 25 kg each to share, which is one third of what they were giving us previously and we rejected it, ” Bakura said.

He said that they hailed from Bama, Gwoza and Gamboru in Borno, and called on the Gov. Babagana Zulum, to evacuate them back home.

Meanwhile, Mr Midala Anuhu, NEMA’s operational officer in charge of Adamawa and Taraba, confirmed to NAN that the agency had evacuated the food items back to its store.

“The agency reviewed the distribution of the food items, where it sent about 226 bags of rice of 25 kg and about 300 bags of soybean of 25 kg to the IDPs.

” They (IDPs) rejected the food items. We pleaded with them to accept it but they refused and protested that what we supplied to them is not enough for them.

“So we evacuated the food items back to our store, because we have no choice,” Midala said.
