2023 presidency: Group pledges N120m support for Oshiomhole

A socio-political group in Edo, Owan and Akoko-Edo Alliance, says it will mobilise N120 million in support of the presidential aspiration of former Governor of Edo, Mr Adams Oshiomhole.

Thenewsguru.com reports that Adams Oshiomhole made the reasons known after he declared his intention to contest the presidential ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The group’s decision is contained in a statement issued in Benin on Friday, by its Chairman and Secretary, Sunny Ifijen and Omeiza Ogumah respectively.

The group said it voluntarily decided to support the former governor because of his capacity and the fact that he would make a difference in the polity and governance of the country.

According to the alliance, it never supported Oshiomhole’s senatorial ambition because it wanted him to contest for a higher office such as the President.

“We have always known the capacity and ability of our comrade and hence our decision to support his ambition for higher office and not the senatorial ambition.

“Oshiomhole’s pedigree as a former labour leader, governor and former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has adequately prepared him for the task of restructuring the change.

“Indeed, the country is in dire need of a change in insecurity, social-political setting, economy and the general wellbeing of the people.

“Of course, we have other capable people aspiring for the same position but Oshiomhole’s antecedents stand him out.

“If his performance as governor of Edo doesn’t say anything about him then I wonder who else is better positioned to occupy the number one political sit in the country,” the group stated.

According to Owan and Akoko-Edo Alliance, Oshiomhole had proved in all offices he held, that the challenges in the country were surmountable.

“That is only if we have leaders that are committed, dedicated and good managers of human and material resources.

“These were the things that guided his (Oshiomhole) achievents in office as governor of Edo and also other endeavours where he excelled.

“Oshiomhole’s popularity has not waned since leaving office unceremoniously as national chairman of the APC.

“He is also a detribalised Nigerian whose friendship cut across every part of the country”, the socio-political group added.

2023: Why Nigerians should elect me as president – Oshiomhole

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole has given reasons why Nigerians should elect him as president in the 2023 general elections.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Oshiomhole made the reasons known after he declared his intention to contest the presidential ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former Edo State governor said he had experienced all strata of life, starting from the lowest level to being a unionist, challenging the authorities.

Oshiomhole stated this on Arise News on Wednesday, while speaking on his presidential ambition, shortly after formally declaring his intention to join the presidential race at Cyprian Ekwensi Centre for Arts and Culture, Area 10, Abuja.

“Given my background, I have passed through all the layers. I have worked at the lowest levels, at the most subordinated positions in the industry, I have been a victim of economic power, I have also been a victim of misuse of political power, I have also fought power and interrogated power.

“I also became governor of Edo state where I tried to demonstrate some of the things I preached while at the NLC,” Oshiomhole said.

The former labour union leader also revealed how he would tackle the lingering Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike if he were the president.

Oshiomhole, who had earlier declared to contest Edo North Senatorial District election, said the academic staff of Nigerian universities were in poor condition financially, adding that he would address their salary issue if elected as president.

He said, “If a professor earns N500,000 in a month, an associate professor maybe N300,000, a senior lecturer, maybe N200,000, what do you expect?

“One thing I learnt in life, and even as a governor, is that it’s not really how much money you have that determines what you do. What you do is a function of your priorities.

“We are told we are spending up to one or two trillion naira on subsidy, and there are other leakages, so if we see education as a priority, if we refuse to accept a situation where universities are on strike and and children of the rich are in school, we must do something about it.

“ASUU are part of Nigerians. What they ask for is feasible. Why would you pay a professor who has been teaching and researching for 35 years N500,000?”

2023: Presidential race hots up as Akpabio, Oshiomhole, Badaru, become APC aspirants

Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio; former Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole; Minister of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu, and Jigawa State Governor, Mohammed Badaru have joined the presidential race to pick the All Progressives Congress APC ticket.

Oshiomhole, a former chairman of APC joined the race after it was speculated earlier on Monday but confirmed his intention to take president Muhammadu Buhari’s job on Wednesday.

Akpabio who had kept his intention to his chest for a long time joined the long queue of APC presidential aspirants same day.

Governor Badaru, during an APC stakeholders meeting held at Government House Dutse on Tuesday evening, was quoted as saying, “I will join the Presidential race since everyone knows I’m highly qualified person to do the job”.

The Governor was also said to have told the gathering during the meeting that he was pressurized to contest for the presidential seat by his colleagues.

His media aide, Auwalu Sankara, said his principal sought President Muhammadu Buhari’s blessings before buying the form.

Badaru’s entry into the race clearly indicate that the APC may jettison zoning and go ahead with a free for all race.

Rotimi Amaechi declares interest to contest in 2023 Presidential election

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has disclosed his intention to contest in the 2023 Presidential election.

Disclosing it at an ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) event in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the former Rivers Governor said he would seek the party’s ticket to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

“I stand before you today to declare my intention and submit my application to serve as your next President”, he announced.

In attendance are top APC chieftains, including ex- national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, Senator Gbemi Saraki, Senator Ali Ndume, Victor Giadom, Salihu Mustapha.

A fortnight ago, security around the minister had been heightened.

Impecabble sources linked the development to the 2023 presidential race, insisting Buhari is favourably disposed to seeing Amaechi lead the country.

The two-time Rivers House of Assembly Speaker now has extra protective agents and a newly-acquired bulletproof Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).

In January, Buhari refused to disclose his preference as successor, expressing fear that the person might be eliminated.

In February, Amaechi was turbaned as Dan Amanar Daura (trusted son of Daura) for his contributions to local and national development.

The President, who appointed Amaechi as his Campaign Director in the 2015 and 2019 elections, is a native of Daura in Katsina State.

  • Keyamo replies Oshiomhole, opens up on letter to Buni

Keyamo replies Oshiomhole, opens up on letter to Buni

Minister of State, for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo has replied to former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole and also opened up on his private letter to Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, who is the National Chairman of the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC).

Keyamo’s response was contained in a statement released on Wednesday by Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser (SA) on Media to the Minister of State, for Labour and Employment.

Moshood stated that Keyamo was not responsible for the political misfortunes of Oshiomhole, stressing that Minister of State, for Labour and Employment holds the former APC leader in very high esteem.

The statement reads: “We have been alerted about a Press Statement making the rounds credited to one Victor Oshioke issued on behalf of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and titled ‘LEAVE OSHIOMHOLE OUT OF APC LEADERSHIP DEBATE’.

“We initially had our doubts as to the authenticity of the said statement in which the respected Comrade made several unfair and unfounded allegations against Mr. Keyamo, but when we were bombarded by credible sources for our response and after taking our time to send someone to call the author to authenticate it, we had no choice but to set the records straight.

“The story of the political tussle between Gov. Godwin Obaseki and Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in Edo State is so well documented that we do not need to remind Nigerians about it.

“Mr. Keyamo had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with it. The cases they filed against each other raged from Benin to Abuja and other parts of the country. Mr. Keyamo NEVER filed a single case in court, nor was his Chambers or juniors in Chambers used in any of the cases. The records are there.

“When the crises finally consumed Oshiomhole, Mr. Keyamo was not in any strategic legal position like the office of the AGF, APC legal adviser or an SA to any high office within the system on legal matters.

“Mr. Keyamo is not PRIVY to how members of the CECPC were nominated and/or selected, so he did not have the benefit of the opportunity to point out any legal disabilities.

“Regrettably, the respected Comrade must have have given in to gossips and rumors.

“As to the unfounded allegation that Mr. Keyamo released his recent legal opinion on the Supreme Court decision in Jegede V. Akeredolu to the public on social media, nothing can be farther from the truth.

“Out of pure patriotism, Mr. Keyamo sent his PRIVATE AND CONFIDENTIAL ADVICE to no other person but the National Chairman of the CECPC himself and just three other highly placed persons with a note not to forward it to anyone.

“It was an honest, sincere and selfless advice IN THE LIGHT OF THE JUDGEMENT of the Supreme Court ON THAT DAY. However, since it was leaked and seeing how it has been politicized, Mr. Keyamo has since refrained from making any further comments on it.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Mr. Keyamo has no personal interest to serve. He is very content with the assignment given to him by Mr. President and is very much ready and willing to return to his thriving legal practice whenever his assignment is over.

“He is not struggling with anyone for anything other than to enthrone justice and fairness within the system. He has climbed the highest ladder in his chosen profession before being called upon to public office. As such, public office is not a do-or-die affair for him. All insinuations in Oshiomhole’s release that Mr. Keyamo is after some PERSONAL gain is pure balderdash.

“Mr. Keyamo is a big fan of Gov. Buni and they both continue to have healthy conversations till today over the issues at stake. This is not a personal issue.

“It is just for the survival of the party and Mr. Keyamo will always defend and support the CECPC to the end unless the Supreme Court says otherwise if and when the Court has the opportunity again to decide with the proper parties before it.

“He will continue to pray for victory on our part. His only offence now is that he sounded a private note of caution because of recent developments at the Supreme Court. How someone can interpret that to be hostility still beats our imagination.

“Mr. Keyamo holds Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in very high esteem. He regards him as his leader and mentor. That outburst was very unnecessary and we think he succumbed to the emotions of the political disappointments he has suffered lately, especially in Edo State. If he is looking for a fall guy, he should please look elsewhere.

“He should be rest assured that we all share in the pain of that costly political miscalculation that caused our dear party to lose the State to the Opposition so cheaply. But we shall continue to support all efforts to put things back on track there”.

    Crisis brews in APC again

Crisis again has started in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as a former National Vice Chairman and ex-acting chairman of the party has dragged the party to court.

Hilliard Eta dragged the party before a Federal High Court in Abuja asking it to nullify the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee of the party.

Eta also asked the Abuja federal high court to declare him as the Acting National Chairman of the ruling APC.

Recall the National Executive Committee of the APC had at its meeting held at the Presidential Villa on June 25, dissolved the party’s National Working Committee, led by the then suspended National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

At the meeting, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, NEC set up the caretaker committee and appointed the Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, as the chairman of the committee.

Listed as defendants in the suit filed by Hilliard are Mai Mala Buni in his capacity as chairman of the caretaker committee; John Akpan Udoedehe as the National Secretary; as well as Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State, Governor Sani Bello of Niger State, and Stella Okotete, as members of the committee.

The plaintiffs joined the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the sixth defendant.

The plaintiffs argued among others that by virtue of Section 183 of the Nigerian Constitution and Article 17 (iv) of the constitution of the APC, it was an illegality and a void act for a person to hold an executive office in the government simultaneously with an office in any organ of the APC at any level, in whatever capacity.

Expulsion: Forgive Oshiomhole, ex-Rivers PDP Chairman begs Edo APC

Immediate-past Chairman of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers, Mr Felix Obuah, has pleaded with the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo to forgive and rescind plans to expel Mr Adams Oshiomhole from the party.

Obuah made the plea in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Jerry Needam, on Wednesday in Port Harcourt.

He said the call became necessary as the clamour for his expulsion gathers support.

“As true and evident as it has shown that the APC lost the Edo governorship election, largely because of Oshiomhole’s intransigence and arrogance, expelling him at this material time could only translate to political suicide for the already beleaguered Edo-born politician.

“As an elder statesman and core politician, I can discern the degree of regret and remorse that goes on in Oshiomhole’s mind and he should, therefore, be forgiven,’’ Obuah said.

The former PDP boss also said that as a state PDP stalwart and elder statesman who understood the intricacies of party politics, losing the national chairmanship of the APC in a manner he did, and also losing the arguable position of ‘father of Edo politics’, is more than enough punishment for Oshiomhole.

“I’m indeed sorry for the Edo APC supporters on the account that the state had suffered in the hands of Oshiomhole both as Edo state governor and as the national chairman of the party.

“Nonetheless, I beseech you to forgive him but if contrary to my plea, you are still bent on discarding him, I think the PDP will definitely not accept him into our more responsible and united party,’’ Obuah said.

VIDEO: We will have no mercy on Oshiomhole if… – Gov Obaseki

The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki has said mercy would not be shown on erstwhile godfather, Adams Oshiomhole if he continues to misbehave.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Obaseki made the statement when he appeared on Arise TV on Tuesday.

When asked about reports that there is a plan to “run Oshiomhole out of the state” he responded that no such plan exists, but the response of his administration depends on the behaviour of Oshiomhole.

“I don’t have any plan, but if he continues to behave the way he always does, if he continues to be disruptive, if he continues to fund his lions and tigers, and tries to create problems for us here, then we will not have any mercy,” Obaseki said.

He added that he has no plan to move to the Senate at the expiration of his tenure.

“After the next four years, i’ll seek admission and go back to school to teach. I don’t have any wishes to go to the Senate,” he stated.

  • Edo 2020: I will defeat Oshiomhole even in his ward, says Shaibu

Edo 2020: I will defeat Oshiomhole even in his ward, says Shaibu

Mr Philip Shaibu, Edo Deputy Governor, has said that come Sept. 19, he will defeat Mr Adams Oshiomhole, former National Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), and immediate past governor of the state even in his ward.

Shaibu said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Benin on Sunday.

He said that this was not because he was “one superstar”, but because he was connected with the people.

He noted that he does not do money politics, nor uses money for election or bribe people for election, but does “organic” politics, which is building relationship with people.

He also said that he believed in being the messenger of the people, carrying the dividend of democracy to the people.

He told NAN that not only would he and the PDP defeat the former National Chairman in his ward, but would also win the entire six local government areas in Edo North Senatorial District.

He said that he will win the district with a very wide margin.

He said, “Edo North Senatorial District will be the easiest to win, because the political structure of the place is in our hands.”

He also disclosed that he introduced the former National Chairman of the APC to politics and organised his first ever political meeting that brought him in.

“I introduced Comrade Oshiomhole to politics. I organised his first ever political meeting that brought him in.

“I was in politics before he, I won my election in 2003, without going to court.

“But he came through the court, and I was already a member of the Edo House of Assembly 18 months before he became a governor.

Shaibu who is the deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for the Edo governorship election billed for Sept. 19, also said that his loyalty to the PDP candidate, Gov. Godwin Obaseki, remained unshaken.

He noted that this was because as the deputy governor of the state, his interest was the development of the state.

He added that the governor was already developing the state in many ways and he would follow and stand with him to the last.

He stressed that he would continue to fight on the side of any government that would make poverty a history in the state.

He noted that he was not just loyal to the governor, but to a vision that the governor, himself and even the former governor had shared.

He noted that Oshiomhole started the vision, which was the vision for development, moving the state forward as well as turning it from a civil service state to an industrial state and a business hub of the nation.

He disclosed that although the immediate past governor of the state was pushed forward to be the leader of that vision, regrettably, he was the only one who had pulled out of that shared vision.

“But the governor came with a promise to take that vision to the next level and he has done that.

“For instance, Oshiomhole built red roofs, but Obaseki put content into the red roofs, that is why we now have the EdoBest, because red roofs without content is zero,” he said.

He further said that if God has sustained the vision to move the state forward, he would remain loyal to the governor.

He added, “It was the same loyalty I gave to the former National Chairman of the APC, when he came to rescue the state and said the people must lead.

“That is because I am constant and that constant thing in me is supporting any government that will sustain democracy, and will make the state move forward.

“That means wealth will be redistributed, and poverty will be history.”
