Why we lost Osun election to PDP – APC chair, Adamu

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu has given the reason why his party lost to the opposition party, PDP at the just-concluded Osun governorship election.

Adamu in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Tuesday said the APC will now return to the drawing board “and change our tactics”.

“We lost the race not because we are incapable but because of the crisis within. We had a massive gathering of supporters a few days before the election in Osogbo. No one could ever anticipate that we would lose the election.

Osun defeat doesn’t in any way mean that we will lose at the general election. We only lost one state out of the 22 we have; you see, we are still strong.

We will sit and check ourselves. We must ask ourselves what is right and wrong and what needs to be corrected.”

“This has shown that we have a big task ahead. We must see what we can do and change our tactics.

APC candidate and incumbent governor of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola lost the election to his main rival, Ademola Adeleke, of the PDP.

  • Defection: APC Chair, Adamu worried over senators leaving party

APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, has expressed concern over the gale of defections in the ruling party.

Seven senators dumped APC for other opposition parties after they failed to secure the governing party’s ticket to contest the 2023 elections.

Members of the Senate who have defected from the APC are Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi), Adamu Aliero (Kebbi), Halliru Jika (Bauchi), Ahmad Babba Kaita (Katsina), Lawal Yahaya Gumau (Bauchi), and Francis Alimikhena (Edo).

Briefing reporters after a closed-door meeting with APC senators, Adamu said it was unfortunate that the lawmakers left the party.

He said the defections were expected due to the electioneering season when the country usually witnesses all manner of things.

He said: “In every election year, these kinds of sub-steps give cause for people; stakeholders to sneeze. Nigeria is not an exception and the APC is not an exception.

How reasonable people will see APC chair, Adamu’s decision on consensus – Akeredolu

Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has reacted to the announcement of a consensus candidate by Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, National Chairman of APC, saying his decision will be considered dangerous to reasonable people.

TheNewsGuru recalls that Abdullahi Adamu on Monday announced Ahmed Lawan as the APC consensus candidate.

He is at best embarking on a frolic which reasonable people will consider dangerous

Akeredolu said this in a statement he personal signed, adding the speculation was rife that the Chairman took a flight of fancy and decided to make a pronouncement beyond his competence.

“My attention has just been drawn to the expensive joke purportedly enacted by the National Chairman of APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

“He has, allegedly, made public his preferred choice as the candidate of the APC for the Office of the President in the next general elections.

“This alleged pronouncement runs contrary to the position of majority of Northern Governors in APC and their counterparts in the South. Our agreement is unanimous on this issue,” he said.

Akeredolu said that the office of the President should be contested for by qualified persons from the Southern part of the country if the move to get a consensus candidate fails.

“There has been no shift from this settled issue.

“Let it be known that the Chairman or anyone who holds a contrary opinion does so at a personal level.

“He is at best embarking on a frolic which reasonable people will consider dangerous.

“We are grieving but have not forgotten that Power must shift to the south. On this we stand,” Akeredolu said.

After two controversies, APC concludes primary election into Senatorial seat vacated by Chairman, Adamu

An architect, Shehu Tukur, won the All Progressive Congress (APC) Nasarawa West Senatorial District rescheduled primary election held in Keffi on Saturday.

Tukur polled 179 votes to defeat a lawyer, Labaran Magaji who polled 114 votes.

A total of 294 delegates were expected at the exercise, but one delegate was absent.

Declaring the result, Chairman of the electoral committee, retired Maj.-Gen. Ahmed Jibrin, thanked security operatives, the aspirants, the media and the delegates for a successful exercise.

He prayed that the APC’s candidate wins at the general elections in 2023.

Speaking with newsmen after his election, Tukur appreciated delegates who voted him and pledged to defend their interests if voted in at the general election in 2023.

He admitted that the process was hectic and thanked God for the successful outcome.

“APC is a family and I call on my co-contestant to join me in ensuring that APC wins, not only in Nasarawa West senatorial district, but in entire Nasarawa State and in Nigeria at large.

“It is a great pleasure that we carried this battle up to this level and it has been concluded peacefully. I pray for a peaceful Nasarawa State and a peaceful Nigeria,’’ he said.

Also speaking with newsmen, Magaji who lost the election congratulated Tukur for emerging as the winner and congratulated himself for making it to the end.

“For me alone to fight this battle to this level shows that there is hope ahead of us. Everybody knows the institutions, characters and personalities I withstood till date but I stand tall to arrive at this level.

“I congratulate myself; congratulate my teeming supporters. APC is the party to beat at the general elections,’’ he said.

The primary election did not conclude without controversy which led to delay for several days.

The controversy was that the original delegates list for the election was allegedly tampered with thereby compelling a frontrunner in the contest, Hon. Ahmed Wadada, to withdraw in protest.

In spite of Wadada’s withdrawal, APC went ahead to first conduct the election on Sunday, May 29, but angry youths broke security barriers and violently disrupted the process leading to its postponement to June 4.

The senatorial seat was vacated by Sen. Abdullahi Adamu after his emergence as the National Chairman of the APC.

Just In: Osinbajo in a meeting with five APC govs, Chairman Adamu

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, is meeting with at least five governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as well as the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

The meeting is coming barely three days after President Muhammadu Buhari, met with the governors at the Council Chambers of the State House on Tuesday before leaving for Madrid, Spain.

It also comes after the conclusion of the party’s screening for presidential aspirants by the John Odigie-Oyegun-led committee.

Although the identities of the governors are still unknown, it was confirmed that the meeting is ongoing at the vice president’s office.

  • Crisis in APC as NWC members accuse Adamu of blackmail

Crisis in APC as NWC members accuse Adamu of blackmail

Crisis deepens in the All Progressives Congress (APC) party as the National Working Committee (NWC) members accused National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu of blackmail into accepting his decisions.

The NWC members lamented that the National Chairman takes decisions unilaterally when it suits him.

They equally decried that he invokes the name of President Muhammadu Buhari to blackmail NWC members into accepting his decisions.

In a statement issued Tuesday titled, “APC and the Need for Vigilance: Urgent Call for Intervention”, and jointly signed by the National Vice Chairman, North-West, Dr. Salihu Lukman and the National Vice Chairman, South-West, Mr. Isaacs Kekemeke, said no member was elected at the March 26, 2022, National Convention to warm seats or offices in the National Secretariat.

They lamented that every effort to get the Chairman to respect the authority of the NWC as elected was proving very difficult.

They stated that they were compelled to make a statement following the serial postponement of the scheduled NWC meetings, twice within 48 hours.

The party Chieftains noted that they were convinced beyond doubt that this was a deliberate attempt to foist a fait accompli on the NWC on fundamental issues that affect the party.

They stated: “Within just two months in the lifespan of the new leadership of our great party, APC, led by His Excellency, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, the NWC, organ of the party vested with the power of managing the day-to-day affairs, including implementing decisions of the National Executive Committee (NEC), as provided in Article 13.4 of the APC Constitution, has been rendered redundant.

“The National Chairman takes decisions unilaterally. When it suits him, he invokes the name of our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari to blackmail NWC members into accepting his decisions.

“Every effort to get the Chairman to respect the authority of the NWC elected on March 26, 2022, APC National Convention is proving very difficult, if not impossible. Note that NEC’s donation of its powers was to NWC and not to the National Chairman or any individual.”

Against this background, the NWC members called all APC leaders to intervene urgently and call Adamu to order.

The added: “The National Chairman must be properly reminded to recognise that the business of managing the day-to-day affairs of the party is the responsibility of the NWC as provided in provisions of the APC Constitution.

“He is free to consult any party leader(s). Such consultations will not represent decisions of the NWC or any organ of the party unless and until it is adopted by a properly constituted meeting of the NWC or organ in question according to the letters and spirit of the APC constitution.

“As a party, we have suffered enough judicial embarrassments arising from clearly avoidable leadership breach of our party’s constitution and spelt out rules.”

APC chair, Adamu reveals who’ll determine party’s presidential candidate

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Abdullahi Adamu has revealed that only God would determine the party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming 2023 general election.

Adamu spoke during an interview with Voice of America, Hausa Service.

He noted that the party leadership will follow laid-down guidelines in deciding the party’s presidential candidate from the 28 presidential aspirants.

Adamu said: “You can’t stop our party stalwarts from contesting elections or aspiring for the presidency. It is their right and we are happy for them.

“There is nothing wrong for anybody aspiring for the exalted seat of the presidency.

“It is God that decides who gets what. Once God makes up his mind and says this is who He wants, that is what we are praying for. We have 28 aspirants for the presidential ticket and everybody knows that all of them cannot get the ticket.

“If it’s God’s wish, they all can even be president of the country one after the other. Ours is to ensure justice in the choice of who emerges as the candidate of the party. That does not mean we are perfect. But we pray we do the right thing.”

2023: Ex-President Jonathan, APC Chairman Adamu meet in Abuja

Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, met with the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu in Abuja late yesterday.

The meeting took place in the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja hours after a group, claiming to be Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, bought the APC nomination form for him

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that there have been intense lobbying and calls by some groups advising the former president to contest the 2023 presidential elections as since he is still eligible for another term.

However, Jonathan in statement last night distanced himself from the group which allegedly bought the nomination form for him revealing that if he wants to contest the elections, he would make an official declaration.

Jonathan joined the Peoples Democratic Party in 1998 and went on to be elected deputy governor, governor, vice-president and president on the party’s platform.

He is yet to formally announce his membership of the APC, who he lost the 2015 elections to as incumbent.

Adamu receives Certificate of Return as APC Chairman

Sen. Abudullahi Adamu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) newly-elected national chairman says there is no room for failure in the party under his chairmanship.

Adamu made the declaration on Friday in Abuja after receiving his Certificate of Return from Jigawa’s Gov. Muhammad Abubakar, Chairman, Election and Planning Sub-Committee of the party’s March, 26 national convention.

“We have zero tolerance for failure in this new dispensation of our great party because we have an enormous responsibility ahead.

“On the 2023 general elections, we cannot move the way we are to election.

“We have a marching order by the leader of this party, President Muhammadu Buhari, we will have to deliver.

“There will be no excuses whatsoever, and we need every hand on deck for this to happen,’’ Adamu who emerged as APC national chairman through consensus said.

He commended Gov. Abubakar’s committee for conducting the election in an efficient, honest and equitable manner.

“We would be explicit and we will be talking to you particularly to talk to the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) and through you to the forum’s chairman,’’ he said.

Membership of the PGF is exclusively that of APC governors.

“We will need your services from time to time and it is my hope that when we get to that point, whoever amongst you we call, will please come and join us to get us over certain situations.

“We will find you as ready partners,’’ Adamu said, adding that he was a team player and was ready to work with the newly-elected National Working Committee (NWC) members.

“I am a team player; as much as is possible I want to carry everybody along with me.

“But to work with me, not because I’m the best and everything, you have to be loyal, not just to me, but to the party. You have to recognise the authority of the party.

“In all that we do, the interest of the party is paramount,’’ the national chairman stressed.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adamu until his emergence was the senator representing Nasarawa West at the Senate.

Presenting Certificates of Return to the NWC members earlier, Gov. Abubakar commended those who contested the party’s executive offices.

He congratulated Adamu for his emergence as the party’s new national chairman and thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for his guidance and kind words.

Gov. Abubakar particularly thanked Buhari for his appeal to party members to embrace consensus which according to him, helped the election committee to do its job smoothly and easily.

He said out of the 78 positions contested for in the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), consensus was achieved in 66 positions.

This, he said, meant that 12 positions were contested.

“This demonstrates that the APC is indeed one family with members that will always listen to President Buhari and his call for peace and unity of the party,’’ he stressed.

Abubakar also thanked the contestants for comporting themselves in the most decent manner in the interest and progress of the party, adding that they were its heroes.

“Despite their personal interests, they chose to withdraw to allow for consensus so that our party will come out stronger and indeed this was what happened.

“I thank them and I believe they deserve all our commendations and the party will never forget them,’’ Abubakar said.

  • APC Convention: Why I stepped down for Adamu – Mustapha

APC Convention: Why I stepped down for Adamu – Mustapha

Mallam Saliu Mustapha, one of the Chairmanship aspirants of All Progressives Congress (APC)at the just concluded National Convention, say he withdrew from the race in the larger interest of the party.

Mustapha, also Turaki of Ilorin, said this in a statement by his media aide, Mr Dapo Okubanjo on Tuesday in Abuja.

“Since our party held its long awaited national convention on March 26.

“I and my team have been inundated with calls from political associates and friends, and even the media, on what they viewed as an unexpected turn of event that saw me stepping down on the convention day.

“Indeed many would have wanted me to take the battle to the convention ground, because that was our goal, but we had to pull back in deference to our great leader President Muhammadu Buhari.

“My decision to concede was never an easy one, but I pride myself as a core party man who does not joke with loyalty and party supremacy,” he said.

He said that only a few years ago, he considered the greater goal of the party and Kwara by refusing to take steps that could have jeopardise its fortune.

Mustapha said this was when he was unfairly treated at the Kwara governorship primaries, saying however, that he had no regret over the issue.

He congratulated the new party leadership and urged it to hit the ground running.

“The new executives should complete the reconcilation process which was started by Sen. Abudullahi Adamu, the party new national chairman,” he said.

Mustapha who was the Deputy National Chairman of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change (CPC), added that this was critical because of the 2023 general elections just a few months time.

He commended members of his campaign team for their commitment and zeal.

“To my political associates, friends, members of my campaign organisation and other volunteers in support groups across the country who all worked tirelessly on the project, I urge you all to keep the faith.

“And I also won’t forget to appreciate the good people of Kwara for their unquantifiable support in spite of everything.

“We may have lost a battle but we did not lose the war, we brought colour and brilliant ideas to the race, and indeed our party members and the leadership took notice.

“We hope to meet with the new party executives led by Sen. Abdullahi Adamu with a view to sharing our thoughts on the way forward with them,’’ he said.

Mustapha said that he remained loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari as he was one of the prime movers of The Buhari Organisation (TBO) some years back.

Adamu emerged as APC new National Chairman on a concensus arrangement after six other aspirants stepped down for him.

The aspirants included: Malam Saliu Mustapha, Sen. George Akume, Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Sen. Sani Musa, Sen. Tanko Al-Makura, former Gov. Abudulaziz Yari of Zamfara and Etsu Muhammed.

This followed an earlier request by Buhari that a consensus candidate should be picked to ensure a peaceful and rancor-free National Convention.
