Follow Buhari’s roadmap, VON DG charges Adamu-led NWC

The Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr Osita Okechukwu has appealed to Sen. Abdulahi Adamu led new National Working Committee (NWC) of All Progressive Congress (APC), to follow the roadmap of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Okechukwu made the appeal Sunday while addressing journalists at the Eagle Square Abuja on the outcome of the just concluded APC convention.

While congratulating Adamu and members of the new NWC, Okechukwu enjoined the new APC leadership to diligently follow Buhari’s roadmap while conducting the forthcoming primaries of the party.

He opined that the key items in the roadmap of the president- adherence to the doctrine of internal democracy and equal opportunities- would ensure that the forthcoming party primaries were not hijacked by highest bidders.
Okechukwu admittethat money bags were seemingly unavoidable in Nigeria’s body politics, but acknowledged the possibility of conducting free, fair and transparent party primaries in the country.

He said, “My confidence is predicated on the premise that Distinguished Senator Adamu and his team will follow Mr President’s roadmap because he (Adamu)headed the Reconciliation Committee and some members like the National Organising Secretary are with him. Therefore handy with the Report, it will be easier for NWC to navigate.”

“For me the NWC should first address the recommendations of the Reconciliation Committee Report so as to engender trust and guarantee genuine peace instead of peace of the grave yard in many states before embarking on the primaries.”

Okechukwu faulted claims that there was no time to waste on reconciliation, describing it as indispensable to the actualisation of Mr President’s roadmap.

The Plateau-born winner, who got N1 million for his efforts, said that he trained four times daily and observed strict dietary control for three months to emerge champions of the Nigerian Elite runners.

In the female category of the Nigerian Elite group, Fadekemi Olukemi emerged champions.

Adamu described the Ethiopian and Kenyan runners as dominant winners of long distance races not only in Nigeria but the world over.

“I started preparing for this race about three months ago, and I had to train four times in a day because of the change in weather.

“To be perfect in marathon, one must train on high altitude like the Plateau mountains where I do train, I also eat light foods during the period.

“I know that I will face lots of challenges from other runners from Plateau because we have many athletes who are looking forward to the race like myself.

“We can challenge the Ethiopians and Kenyans, but they have an edge over us because they have higher altitude to train on.”

Ethiopian duo of Gelata Ulfata and Dagne Siranesh emerged the overall winners of the 7th Edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon in the male and female categories.

#EndSARS : Lagos judicial panel summons IGP, Adamu

The Lagos State panel hearing cases of extrajudicial activities and police brutality has summoned the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to appear before it over a case involving one Adewale Adewuyi.

Chairperson of the panel, Justice Doris Okuwobi (Rtd.), disclosed this on Tuesday.

Adewuyi, through his lawyer, Debo Adeleke, had alleged that the police refused to release 26 acres of farmland seized from him since 2013.

He asked the panel to summon Adamu so that the police could be compelled to release the seized farmland.

Adeleke said a federal court judgment in 2017 ordered the police to release his farmland located at Age-Mowo near Badagry and to negotiate with him the amount to pay for damages and physical assault.

He added the police have refused to release the farmland or engage in alternative dispute resolution, despite efforts to compel them to do so.

Cyril Ejiofor, police counsel, asked that he should be given two weeks to meet with the legal department so that the issue will be resolved.

However, the chairperson of the panel, ordered that all parties mentioned in the petition, including the IGP should be served summons.

The case was adjourned till March 30.

JUST IN: NBA drags Buhari to court for extending IGP’s tenure

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has filed a suit to challenge the extension of the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu by President Muhammadu Buhari.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that President Buhari had last week Thursday approved a three months extension of the IGP’s tenure having due for retirement on Monday, February 1.

Meanwhile, the NBA’s Suit with number FHC/L/CS/214/2021 is filed against the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Police Service Commission, and Mr Mohammed Abubakar Adamu.

The NBA in a statement signed on Friday by its President Olumide Akpata said it is seeking a judicial determination of the constitutionality of the President’s extension of Mr Adamu’s tenure as the Inspector-General of Police for three months after Mr Adamu had, on 1 February 2021, attained 35 years of service as a member of the Nigeria Police Force.

The NBA said in its view, the President’s extension of Mr Adamu’s tenure by three months is unconstitutional.

INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF POLICE – EXTENSION OF TENURE OF OFFICE

    Distinguished Colleagues,

In fidelity to the motto of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) which is Promoting the Rule of Law, on Thursday, 11 February 2021, the NBA-Public Interest Litigation Committee (NBA-PILC), on behalf of the NBA, commenced legal action at the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court in Suit No. FHC/L/CS/214/2021 (the “Suit”) against the President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Police Service Commission, and Mr Mohammed Abubakar Adamu.

In the Suit, the NBA seeks judicial determination of the constitutionality of the President’s extension of Mr Adamu’s tenure as the Inspector-General of Police for three months after Mr Adamu had, on 1 February 2021, attained thirty-five years of service as a member of the Nigeria Police Force.

The NBA’s decision to take this extraordinary line of action is underpinned by an urgent need, and a sacred duty, to reassert the supremacy of the rule of law in the face of growing impunity and the seeming reluctance of Law Officers in Government to give proper counsel.

The NBA’s position in the Suit is that Mr Adamu ceased to be a member of the Nigeria Police Force when he attained the milestone of thirty-five years of service. Therefore, the President’s extension of Mr Adamu’s tenure by three months, in the NBA’s respectful view, is unconstitutional.

In the grand scheme of things, the NBA is wary that the more government officials casually violate the law, the harder it would become to expect citizens to be compliant. Citizens take their cues from their leaders and public office holders who flout the laws of the country that they are meant to uphold will discover sooner or later that their examples will be followed by those that they purport to govern.

The ubiquity of acts of impunity, especially by those in high public offices, portends an existential threat to the survival of this country and her hard-won democracy. The NBA, now more than ever, is firmly committed to changing this narrative.

As the outcome of the Suit is awaited, the NBA will continue to condemn and confront lawlessness in any form and from all quarters.

#EndSARS: No violent protests will be allowed again, IGP warns

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has vowed not to allow violent protests in the country, noting that the police were ready to combat any group attempting to cause a breakdown of law and order.

While reiterating that the constitution guaranteed peaceful protests, the IG said many of the masterminds of the violence that rocked the #EndSARS protests had been arrested including inmates who escaped from Edo custodial centre.

Responding to questions during a meeting with command commissioners of police in Abuja on Friday, Adamu disclosed that many inmates had equally been arrested in Kano and Kaduna while perpetrating crimes.

He stated, “We will never allow this type of #EndSARS protests again, it was violent. Peaceful protest is allowed in our constitution. When these rallies started peacefully, we provided security for them.

“We were moving with them to make sure they were not molested by any group of people and it was going on well until it turned violent.

“When it turned violent, they then attacked the people that were even giving them protection. So, we shall never allow any violent protest in this country again. When you talk of peaceful protests, yes, it is allowed but violent protests, never.”

He called on well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on groups said to be planning another round of protests to drop the idea.

The IG explained that his men were working hard to apprehend other inmates at large, including cultists terrorizing the neighbourhoods.

He noted, “We have made a lot of arrests of those people that escaped from prisons. Some were even arrested in Kano and Kaduna. When they escaped, some of them went back to their business of robbery.

“And the cultists, when they escaped, they went back to the business of cultism, especially in Edo. We’ve been able to arrest a significant number of them and we are still after those that are outside. We call on Nigerians, any information you have about an escapee from any of the correctional centres, please inform us or any other security agencies, so that we can get them back to prison.”

  • IGP lists conditions for policemen to use firearms

IGP lists conditions for policemen to use firearms

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, on Thursday, visited the Oyo State Police Command, Ibadan to encourage his men to go back to their duties with courage and rid the nation of criminals.

He also listed conditions in which policemen are allowed to use firearms.

He said they should not allow the killing of their colleagues by hoodlums and the destruction of police facilities to demoralise them, saying they had duties to perform as stated by the Nigeria Constitution.

He urged them to show maximum restraint in using their firearms but said they must use them if their lives were in danger or during a riot.

Adamu said there were some bad eggs in the police just like they were in other segments of the society.

The IGP said, “Every Nigerian has their rights, they are called human rights, you too have your rights as human beings and you must protect your rights. Nobody will trample upon your right and go free in as much as you too protect the rights of other Nigerians. You are not supposed to be demoralized.

“Constitutionally, you have the duties to perform in this country, duties to protect lives and property and to fight crime. Therefore, no amount of insult, attacks should prevent you from performing your constitutional duties. We encourage you to go out there and perform your duties the way you were trained to do and you must be civil to members of society.

“Be courageous in doing your job and in the course of doing your job, if anything happens, we will stand by you. But never shy away from performing your duties. If you shy away from performing your duties it means the whole society will be in trouble, the criminals will come out.

“When it is necessary for you to use your firearm, you must use it. Remember the conditions under which you can use it- when there is a riot, you can use your firearm, when people are running away from lawful custody, you can use it. Protection of public assets, you can use your firearm, when your life is in danger and there are no other means to protect yourself, you can use your firearm.

“But you are not supposed to kill, you are supposed to use your firearm to restrain them but not to kill. During the #EndSARS protest that turned violent, many of you showed maximum restraint in dealing with the protesters.

“You were professional to the core in dealing with the protest. You showed maximum restraints and that was why we didn’t have a lot of casualties. So, thank you for that. If you have used your firearm, we would have got a lot of casualties and it would have been a different story. The whole world knows how professional we are.”

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Mr Chucks Enwonwu, said the visit of the IGP was a morale booster, saying his men are not ready to abandon their duties for others.

He said the command had remained unshaken and the IGP’s words had redoubled their energy and commitment to make the state safer.

How new IGP, Adamu stopped Imohimi’s redeployment from Lagos

Facts have emerged on how the new Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu stopped the redeployment of the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi out of the state.

Former IGP Ibrahim Idris had redeployed Imohimi out of Lagos, and brought in Kayode Egbetokun as his replacement, but on his retirement on Tuesday, the new IGP stopped the redeployment.

A statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Chike Oti said Imohimi is fully in charge as CP in Lagos, based on the order of the IGP.

“The Lagos State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that the Inspector General of Police has graciously suspended the planned redeployment of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Edgal Imohimi, from the command.

“The IGP, in his wisdom, said the status quo should be maintained. The CP, who is well known for his discipline and respect for orders, was about handing over to Mr Kayode Egbetokun on Tuesday when he received the directive to suspend the ceremony and await further instructions,” he said.

Oti said the Police Command thought it necessary to inform the people of Lagos that Imohimi, going by this development, remained the head of the police in the state.

“While humbled by the decision, the CP wishes to assure the people of Lagos that their safety and security remains his priority,” he said.
