Anambra guber: ADC urges INEC to be fair, transparent, neutral

African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be fair, neutral and transparent in the conduct of Anambra governorship election, scheduled for Nov. 6.

National Chairman of the party, Mr Raph Nwosu, made the call in a statement issued on Monday in Awka.

Nwosu also appealed to eligible residents of the state to participate actively in the ongoing continuous voter registration (CVR) being conducted by INEC.

According to him, the only way to throw out a non-performing or bad government is through the ballot box, appealing to residents, therefore, to take the exercise with all seriousness.

“We urge INEC to change tactics and be neutral in the coming election. Anambra people deserve free, fair and credible election, and nobody, not even INEC, should be allowed to subvert the will of the people.

“We also urge the electorate to register and vote. INEC has opened the registration window. We must take advantage of it maximally.

“I must caution that democratic vitality revolves around citizens’ participation and electoral manager’s credibility, neutrality, discipline and transparency,” he said.

The ADC boss described the performance and the incumbent-successor arrangement of the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in the past years as “a failure”.

According to him, only good governance can guarantee a return for an incumbent, adding that people must be allowed to decide who wins in any election.

Nwosu said that ADC’s governorship flag bearer, Chief Akachukwu Nwankpo, was committed to righting the wrongs of decades and abuses of the system, institution and processes in the state.

”Nwankpo has keyed into ADC pan-African and global vision. He has also agreed to make Anambra the hub of commerce, tourism, medical excellence, research and innovation.

“ADC members in Anambra, in the country and in the Diaspora are with him on this journey. I am sure Anambra people will confirm it in November,” Nwosu said.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has Wednesday elected the special envoy to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Nze Akachukwu Nwankpo as its governorship candidate for the forthcoming November 6, 2021 election in Anambra state.

Nwankpo who recently dumped his former All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Party along with his teeming supporters for the ADC said he was very at home and settled down in his new party.

He pointed out that his lofty dream for Anambra’s greatness has remained evergreen, “hence I joined ADC to actualise my ambition and vision for greater Anambra. ADC is a credible platform with no political baggage, Anambra people need a breathe of fresh air.

In his acceptance speech before the tumultuous crowd of supporters/delegates, Nwankpo thanked them for the opportunity, assuring that he would run an open door policy.

He promised to step up the state security, adding that his administration would ensure that no soul in Anambra state would be lost again to the hoodlums.

“We will revitalise the Agriculture and other sectors of the economy. I assure you that in the coming days we will move to the street to return sanity. We are going to build on it,” he maintained.

The candidate noted that “ADC is a party that has been on ground for long and presents a credible platform for a man with high electability and burning passion for the good of his people,” he said.

That his decision to join ADC was in response to the pressure from his supporters that he should get a platform to contest the Nov. 6 election and allow the people of Anambra decide.

Earlier, the National Chairman of the party, Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu, noted that success of ADC in the November 6 poll would mark an end to holiganism of the state polity, which according to him, has etched deep into ‘our system of governance.’

The party’s Governorship Electoral Committee chairman, Chief Anayo Arinze, announced Nwankpo as winner of the primary after a total of 7051 eligible delegates of the party in attendance gave him overwhelming ‘yes’ voice votes.

Accepting his nomination, the flag bearer, Nze Akachukwu Nwankpo, thanked the delegates for the opportunity, assuring that he would run an open door policy.

He promised to step up the state security, added that his administration would ensure that no soul in Anambra state would be lost again to the hoodlums.

“We will revitalise the Agriculture and other sectors of the economy. I assure you that in the coming days we will move to the street to return sanity. We are going to build on it,” he maintained.

Also speaking, the Chairman, ADC Board of Trustees, Senator Patricia Akwashiki, urged Anambra state electorates to rally round their party candidate as his administration would give voice to all including the less privileged.

    Super Nigeria possible, says ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says a super Nigeria is possible if the country’s youths wake up to leadership challenges with renewed national consciousness.

The National Chairman of the party, Chief Ralph Nwosu, made the remark at a forum organised by the Nigerian Youths Home and Diaspora Electoral College Institution on Saturday in Lagos.

Nwosu, who was represented by Peter Ede, ADC National Vice President (North Central), said that an awesome and excellent Nigeria was possible with the reawakening of national consciousness and inclusiveness.

“Our mentality needs a to change, our orientation needs to change. We must build the people’s minds. A super Nigeria is very possible because we are unique people.

“It is now left for Nigeria to have national consciousness. To make Nigeria super, Nigerian youths now need to look deeply into themselves and take possession the country and create a better tomorrow.

“A super Nigeria is possible. ADC is out to run an inclusive government and that is what Nigeria needs now,” he said.

Nwosu said that the ADC was a youth compliant organisation, saying that the party was proud to be associated with the youth group.

According to him, the ADC remains a credible third force political party, having won some seats in the 2019 general elections.

He said that party was dominated by great people of integrity, discipline, honour and intellect that would take over the leadership of the country come 2023.

He urged the youths to learn to cut cost of governance and manage diversity, saying that the nation’s strength was in its diversity and not in secession.

Speaking, Chief Vincent Ubani, Head, Nigerian Youths Home and Diaspora Electoral College Panel Committee and Initiator Nigerian Youths Home and Diaspora Electoral College Institution (NYHDECI), urged youths to resist whatever could destabilise the nation.

Ubani, a 2019 governorship candidate of African Action Congress (AAC) in Abia, said: “It is time for the youth to take over leadership but to do so, we must come together to get involved in politics”.

He said that the group had adopted ADC as credible alternative for youths to run for elections in Nigeria to ensure brighter future for the nation.

Ubani presented to the party the Certificate of Return as the winner of the 2021 Youth Takeover Leadership Electoral College Committee on behalf of the Coalition.

He said that the coalition would also call for a national youth summit and young party candidates national convention before the 2023 general elections.

In his remarks, Maurice Ebam, ADC National Youth Leader, urged Nigerian youths to unite in their strength as ADC remained a credible alternative to create a progressive Nigeria of the Youths’ dream.

Photo: Buhari’s new ADC, Lt. Col Yusuf Muktar Dodo takes over

President Muhammadu Buhari’s new Aide-De-Camp (ADC), Lt. Col Yusuf Muktar Dodo, on Monday, officially resumed duties.

Lt. Col. Y M Dodo hails from Katsina Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Dodo took over from his predecessor, Colonel Mohammed Lawal Abubakar.

Abubakar, a colonel, was nominated to attend a five-month strategic and defence course at Santiago, Chile from March 8 to July 30, 2021.

Abubakar is the longest serving ADC to a civilian president, having served in that position for almost six years and the second longest serving ADC in the history of armed forces of Nigeria after William Walbe, the late lieutenant-colonel who served as ADC for nine years to Yakubu Gowon, former military head of state.

Dodo, an academy adjutant of the Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA) who was eventually picked by the president, understudied Abubakar for three weeks, as Abubakar is expected to leave for Santiago on March 8.

The office of the ADC to the president provides security and protects the President and his family in conjunction with other security agencies.

The ADC also attends to the personal needs of the president and other matters regarding his functions as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

Officers who are to be nominated to be ADC to the President must be loyal, of high morale standard, impeccable character, courage, knowledgeable as well as high level of integrity.

Gov Makinde not dumping PDP for ADC – Aide

The Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Mr Taiwo Adisa, says that the governor is not leaving Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for African Democratic Congress (ADC) or any other party.

Adisa said this in a statement issued to newsmen in Ibadan on Monday, while reacting to rumours making the rounds in a section of the media that the governor is set to dump PDP under whose platform he was elected governor in 2019.

He described the report as “a concocted falsehood from purveyors of fake news, who are bent on maligning the governor at all cost.”

Adisa maintained that contrary to the fake news report, Makinde had no plan whatsoever to join any other party.
According to him, the governor has remained a strong pillar of PDP for many years and was already leading the mission for its resurgence in the South-West zone.

The governor’s aide stated that the report in question raised all the red flags of fake news, as it was based on unverifiable claims from an unnamed source.

He added that if the writers of the report and the editors of the media through which it was reported had done due diligence, such falsehood would not have found its way into the public sphere.

Adisa further stated that the attempt to launch the concocted story shortly after some media outfits had tried to exaggerate the governor’s exit from a WhatsApp platform purportedly belonging to PDP was negatively ingenious.

“The noble profession of journalism dictates that if a party makes insinuations about another, the second party’s response should be sought.

“The reporter in question had access to the media unit of the governor, but he chose to fly with the falsehood.”

Adisa maintained that apart from the governor not contemplating joining ADC or any other party for that matter, he would also not be distracted by the ridiculous lies being circulated by the enemies within and without.

  • Ogun ADC guber candidate Gboyega Isiaka, supporters defect to APC

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun on Tuesday received thousands of defectors from African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by its gubernatorial candidate during the 2019 general elections, Gboyega Isiaka and those from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

With the massive defection, Abiodun declared that the APC could now be said to be the only political party in the state.

Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state led by the former Deputy Governor under Gov. Gbenga Daniel, Alhaja Salmot Badru, also defected to the ruling APC in the state at the event held at Ake in Abeokuta.

Delivering his speech, the governor, who congratulated the defectors, assured them that they would not be discriminated against in the party as the state was set to achieve greatness.

He promised that in spite of filling some positions in government, there were still some positions left behind for those that just joined the party.

”We still have some positions in place for those that joined us, everyone should have a sense of belonging. I greet you all from Ogun East, West and Central Senatorial Districts.

”There should be no discrimination, we should start ward meetings, politics have started, we are going to join hands to build the future of Ogun together. We are all one and the same,”he said.

He commended the efforts of the party’s National Chairman, Adams Oshiomohle, describing him as a leader who believes in unity and progress.

The governor promised to ensure that the dividends of democracy were spread across all nooks and crannies of the state.

The State Caretaker Chairman of APC, Yemi Sanusi, while welcoming the defectors, described the event as another milestone in the history of the state, saying that the new members had been working with the APC before now.

Responding on behalf of other defectors, Isiaka said that they share in the belief of social welfarism of the governor.

He noted that the defectors were coming to add value to governance in the state and also believe in the capability and capacity of Gov. Dapo Abiodun.

  • Rivers polls: Opposition parties laud INEC, as PDP kicks

Opposition parties in Rivers have lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for suspending the electoral process in the state.

The Governorship Candidates of the parties, incuding Action Democratic Congress (ADC), Labour Party (LP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) made the commendation on Tuesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Port Harcourt.

The candidates also called on INEC to cancel the governorship election entirely and order a fresh election in the state.

Mr Victor Fingesi of the ADC described the suspension of the process as a welcome development.

Fingesi alleged that the March 9 Governorship and State House of Assembly elections in the state was marred by violence and irregularities.

He further alleged that many thugs, allegedly dressed in military uniforms, were engaged to disrupt the process.

He called on the major political stakeholders in Rivers to come to a roundtable to discuss the way out of the current logjam in the state.

Similarly, Mr Isaac Wowon of the LP condemned the brazen show of desperation for power by some politicians.

Wowon called on Nigerians to resist impunity and lawlessness in the electoral process.

Also, Mr Precious Elekima of the SDP called on INEC to declare him winner of the March 9 governorship election.

Elekima claimed that he polled the highest number of votes cast during the election, judging by the results so far collated.

He further called for a summit where politicians and prominent Rivers people would sit to take a stand on how to resolve issues of governance in the state.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the suspension of all electoral processes in the Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state by INEC.

The party in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, called on INEC to immediately declare the result of the state governorship election.

INEC on Sunday announced the suspension of all electoral processes in Rivers until further notice.

The suspension, according to the statement, issued in Abuja by Mr Festus Okoye, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education, was due to widespread violence and disruptions that characterised the state’s elections.

Ologbondiyan said that the PDP rejected INEC decision to suspend the electoral process, after results had been collated.

He described the suspension as a premeditated plan by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government to change the wishes of Rivers people as shown in the polling units.

“Our party contends that elections have been concluded in Rivers state; results of the Governorship and House of Assembly polls have been declared at the various polling units, wards and local government collation centers and all returning officers and political parties in the ballot conclusively have the figures.

“It is therefore directly incumbent on INEC to declare the final results instead of deliberately creating openings for the subversion of the final process; a development, which exposes the commission’s complicity with the Presidency and the APC to enmesh the election into unnecessary crisis.

“Our party cautions INEC to note that a lot of innocent Nigerians have already been killed by the APC in its desperation to forcefully take over Rivers state.

“The commission should therefore save the state from more bloodletting by immediately declaring the results.”

Ologbondiyan called on President Muhammadu Buhari to reflect on the bloodletting that characterised the election and call the military to order.

“Mr President should immediately call the security agencies to end their siege to our electoral process. Any further delay is a recipe for escalation of crisis in our nation.”

Ologbondiyan added that many Nigerians believed that the violence would have been averted if the Amendment to the Electoral Act was signed.
