    Anambra Governorship candidate steps down

The Governorship Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Anambra, Mr Patrick Obianyo, has stepped down, ahead of the election slated for November 8.

Obianyo, a former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the state, announced his resignation at the ADC Governorship Substitution Primary Election held on Friday in Awka.

NAN reports that the exercise, which was monitored by INEC officials, saw Mr John Nwosu emerge unopposed as the new governorship candidate of the party.

Obianyo cited the “burden of the aspiration” as his reason for stepping down.

He said that his blood pressure had spiked “due to the stress occasioned by the position”.

He said he was glad to hand over the baton to Nwosu “to lead us to victory” in the governorship race.

He described Nwosu as a more capable hand.

Obianyo said: “Please stop calling me ‘His Excellency’. That appellation has stopped today.

“I am not regretting, rather I am happy that I am handing over the baton to a more capable hand.”

Nwosu, a former Governorship Aspirant on the platform of the Labour Party, was elected unopposed through a voice vote.

He was returned by the Deputy National Chairman of ADC, Chief Anayo Arinze.

In a speech, Arinze said the exercise was in line with the constitution of the party and in accordance with the electoral guidelines.

In an acceptance speech, Nwosu expressed his commitment to rescue Anambra.

He said the occasion was “an important junction in the efforts to rescue Anambra”.

He described his decision to join the party as “a welcome change”, and promised that his political structure, called “Mission and vision”, remained consistent.

“I am glad to be part of the larger ADC family, much work remains to be done.

“Let us go and get the job done.

“We will partner with ADC, her alliance and coalition partners to form a formidable opposition that will dislodge the incumbent administration,” Nwosu said.

In a brief remark, his Campaign Director, Mr Ben-Chuks Nwosu, said his principal was an ICT guru, “who has the tact and means to execute the election and turn Anambra around”.

  • ADC not bothered about Rep member’s planned defection to APC

ADC not bothered about Rep member’s planned defection to APC

Mr Ralphs Nwosu, the National Chairman of African Democratic Congress (ADC), says the party is not bothered by the planned defection of Rep. Leke Abejide (ADC-Kogi) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The chairman said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja against the backdrop of the planned defection of Abejide to the APC.

It would be recalled that Abejide said on Monday at a news conference in Abuja at the National Assembly that he would move to the APC if the crisis in the ADC persisted.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that his counterpart in the ADC in the House of Representatives, Rep. Salman Idris, representing Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency of Kogi State, also defected to the APC on July 24 at plenary.

Nwosu, however, said: “On the defection or defections to APC from our party, we have been inundated with calls from party chieftains, concerned citizens, patriots, national leaders, and civil society organizations.

“We appreciate their concerns and commend their patriotism.

“I wish to assure them all that, as a disciplined organisation with a transformational leadership philosophy, we are taking appropriate steps to maintain the integrity of our great party, the ADC.”

He said the party had set up a committee led by Dr Bamidele Ajadi, the Deputy National Chairman (Politics), to look into the defections to enable us to apply the law justly.

“To deepen ADC’s grassroots penetration and engagements, the National Executive Committee of our great party resolved to participate roundly in all local council elections”, he said.

This, according to him, is based on the Supreme Court ruling on the financial autonomy of the Local Government Areas (LGAs).

He said that the party had set up the Local Council Elections Committee to schedule, strategise, and supervise all LGA elections in all the states of the country.

The chairman appealed to all stakeholders at the subnational level, especially governors, to ensure that all democratic processes were conducted in an atmosphere of impartiality.

“The NWC will like to make it abundantly clear that one Shola Samuel, aka GADAFI, who has been parading himself as a BoT member of our party, ADC, is not a member of the party’’, he said.

He also said that he had been using the designation to call meetings in Kogi, adding that he was not a registered member of ADC, let alone a BoT member.

Kogi: INEC needs to do more to earn voters’ trust – ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) needs to do more to earn voters’ trust.

The Lagos State ADC Chairman, Mr George Ashiru, made the remark on Monday while reacting to the conduct and outcome of the off-cycle governorship election in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa.

Ashiru said: “We are concerned about reports of several areas where voting was disrupted.

“This indicates that adequate preparation was not made to ensure every vote counts.

“Voter turnout is almost always directly impacted by fear of lack of transparency by INEC and insecurity. INEC needs to do more to earn voters’ trust.”

Speaking on the outcome of the poll in Kogi, Ashiru said Mr Leke Abejide, the ADC governorship candidate, however, put up a good fight despite coming fourth in the poll.

“I am glad that Abejide, though a member of the National Assembly, put his hat in the wring to become one of the political forces to reckon with in Kogi,” the ADC boss said.

He advised the governor-elect in Kogi, Alhaji Usman Ododo, to demonstrate love for the people of Kogi with all his heart.

Ashiru urged Ododo to follow the constitution thoroughly saying “therein lies the heart of good governance.”

APC’s Ododo polled 446,237, while his closest rival, Murtala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) polled 259,052 votes.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate polled 46,362 votes and Hon. Leke Abejide of the ADC got 21,819 votes.

Kogi 2023: ADC expects landslide victory

The African Democratic Party (ADC) says the victory of its gubernatorial candidate, Leke Abejide, is a “tsunami waiting to happen” in Kogi in the Nov. 11 governorship election.

Adagu Suberu, Director General of Leke Abejide/Idris Omede Governorship Campaign Council of the ADC, made the remark during the party’s campaign rally in Okehi and Adavi local government areas of Kogi.

Suberu, a former Chairman, Okehi LGA, said the composition of ADC’s leadership in Kogi  was a “coalition of former stalwarts” of the APC and the PDP.

He said the coalition came together for the purpose of actualisation of power shift to Kogi West in the Nov. 11 poll.

He said that the ADC candidate’s anticipated victory would be a repeat of the “tsunami” of Feb. 25 National Assembly elections in Kogi Central Senatorial District.

Suberu explained that what united the coalition was the commitment to the actualisation of power shift to Kogi West Senatorial District in January 2024, in the spirit of equity, fairness and justice.

“This time around, the beneficiary governorship candidate in the state will be no other person than Abejide.

“The result of the February elections was a sign of rejection of the ruling APC in the area as the people revolted against the ruling party as a repayment of its anti-people policies.

“You should know that the same Okehi/Adavi people that turned the table against the ruling party on Feb. 25 are still very much on ground. They have resolved to vote en masse for the ADC candidate.

“Abejide is a successful merchant, who before venturing into politics, had carved a niche for himself in the business world as an honest, trusted and reliable leader,” he said.

He disclosed that Abejide’s achievements recorded in Yagba federal constituency from his first term in the House of Representatives, was a path way for his re-election in the February election.

The State ADC Chairman, Mr John Adaji, called on the public to ignore false reports that the state ADC chairman had dumped the party and had collapsed the party structure into APC.

“I stand here before you live and direct, that I am the authentic chairman of ADC in Kogi State.

“There can’t be two captains in one ship, and here I am with you and with our governorship candidate, Elder Leke Abejide.

“ADC structure is intact. The man who claimed to be chairman and said he has defected to the APC has been expelled from the ADC a long time ago,” he said.

Abejide, on his part, promised to revisit the civil service screening embarked upon by Gov. Yahaya Bello’s administration, if elected.

This, he said, was with a view to reabsorbing workers wrongly dismissed from the service, complemented with full benefits of their salary arrears.

“We will ensure the local government system in Kogi is fully functional as a third tier government with full control of its allocations.

“ADC will ensure that the payment of percentage salary in Kogi will become a thing of the past. We will put an end to the ungodly payment of between 17-25 per cent of salaries to workers.

“My aim is to ensure that Kogi is stimulated economically on every side for the desired growth and development,” he said.

The ADC candidate urged the residents of the state to come out en masse to effect the new change by voting for him during the Nov. 11 governorship election.

  • Subsidy palliatives are tokens, can’t ameliorate plights of Nigerians – Kachikwu

Subsidy palliatives are tokens, can’t ameliorate plights of Nigerians – Kachikwu

Dumebi Kachikwu, a former presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC), has said that all the subsidy palliatives prescribed by the Federal Government are tokens in nature and cannot ameliorate the plights of Nigerians.

Kachikwu said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said that N1billion was now just US$1.1million currently and would not make significant input in any industry or in starting any manufacturing.

“The Nigerian Custom Service alone takes about N10m per 40ft container. He prescribed N50,000 which is less than US$100 for nano businesses. Really?

“Mr President also mentioned that his administration would procure 3,000 CNG-powered buses but he probably doesn’t know that Nigeria has only 16 installed CNG skids and most of them are in the southern part of Nigeria.

“President Tinubu means well but there still remains a big difference between meaning well and doing well,” he said.

Kachikwu said that the President’s speech to the nation on Monday highlighted the need for a solid team behind the Presidency.

According to him, he devoted the first few paragraphs of his speech to those who have abused the subsidy scheme but yet failed to mention what his administration would do to ensure they are brought to justice.

“Deep rooted multi-dimensional corruption is an unquantifiable variable that distorts and disrupts every economic plan and policy. This might be the real meaning of the oft-used phrase: the Nigerian Factor.

“We must now go beyond text book economic theories and fashion out home-grown ideas and solutions that take into cognisance the reality of who we really are as a people,” he said.

Nigeria Decides: ADC distances self from LP, PDP over fight with INEC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reached out to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party to stop linking it in their fight with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Recall that agents of the LP and PDP staged a walk out of the collation center after accusing the electoral body of unfairness with the counting process.

.The leaders of the two parties including the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, also called for the suspension of the collation of results and the resignation of the INEC boss, Mahmoud Yakubu.

But the ADC, in a statement signed by its Board of Trustees Chairperson, Patricia Akwashiki, said the party has never been part of the fight.

It also asked the two parties to delist its name from those partaking in the fight against INEC.

“They demanded that the INEC Chairman step down from his position and that fresh elections should be conducted,” she said.

According to Mrs Akwashiki, the former ADC party chairman doesn’t have the right to decide the future of the party since he is no longer its leader.

“This is not the position of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Ralph Nwosu who is the immediate past Chairman of the ADC does not speak for the ADC and cannot speak for the ADC.

“We cannot be a party to any action that will undermine the integrity of INEC or lead to a breakdown of law and order. When the final results are announced by INEC, we will have an informed reaction. The ADC will not be a party to any attempt to truncate the ongoing electoral process. All parties to this process must remain law abiding and remember that the Electoral Act clearly spells out guidelines for redress,” she added.
