Churches exhibit worst form of leadership – Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Worldwide, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has said the problem of bad leadership is not limited to the circular world but the church in particular.

The revered clergy explained that the issue of corruption bedevilling the country grew on people’s refusal to be contented with the little they have at their disposal

Adeboye spoke on Wednesday in Ikeja, Lagos, during the Third Annual Birthday Public Lecture organised by the church to commemorate his 75th birthday.

Ably represented by his wife, Folu, Adeboye expressed sadness at the lack of true leadership in the society, calling for a return to cultural values.

In his words: “Leadership is at the core of our problem in this nation. Some people sit in their room and comment on newspaper articles, but have you removed the log in your eyes?

If there is anywhere leadership should be recommended, it should be from the church. But it is unfortunate that the worst leadership is from the church. We should go and check ourselves. Are we in true leadership or we are in falsehood? Because this has been the groaning of my heart for many years and I pray about it fervently.

I challenge the leaders in this church that what the Bible says about elders, I have not seen it. But things are changing and I want us to be part of that change.

The problem of corruption which we have in this nation would not have been there if everybody is contented with what he or she has. But people love to do more than they have. They want to show off to their children, and the children also when they get to school or are with their colleagues, are not satisfied because they were not brought up to be satisfied.”

Adeboye appealed to elders in the society to live in a way befitting of their status, adding that women should also train their children to positively influence their future.

  • Again! OAP, Freeze attacks RCCG’s Adeboye, other ‘Daddy GOs’

Controversial OAP Daddy Freeze has once again attacked the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye and his contemporaries, saying they are extorting people and living a life of sheer opulence.

Freeze made the remarks on his Instagram page on Tuesday while reacting to a photograph of a baby, David Emmanuel Umem, Nsidibe Orok, who was rescued by Nigerian-based Danish aid worker, Anja Rinngren Lovén.

The popular humanitarian, Anja Rinngren Lovén shared the photo to remind people about the baby who she said will be starting school this week after a year of his rescue.

Provoked by the emotion surrounding the photograph, Freeze lamented, “Redeemed was busy setting up churches on every street, yet they missed this boy”

Redeemed was busy setting up churches on every street, yet they missed this boy….. I bet with you, that there was a Redeemed church within walking distance from this starving child, branded a witch by the same doltish belief system that extorts your first salary every January, having you willingly give your hard earned money in a recession, to a church where the G.O has a private jet and leads a life of sheer opulence! – The Nigerian Pentecostal church brands people wearing tattoos as bad and ‘unchristian’ whereas this woman with all her tattoos is more Christ like than all your ‘Daddy GOs’ can ever be. What she is doing is all Jesus requires of us, Jesus NEVER COLLECTED TITHE or first fruit and his disciples didn’t collect it either! As a matter of fact, no Christian church collected tithe for 600 years after Christ died and resurrected. – History claims that Mungo Park discovered the Niger and we wonder “what were the Nigerians living around the Niger doing, that it had to take a foreigner to discover a river we were bathing in and washing from?” My answer was simple “The same thing we were doing when hope was found” ~FRZ – P.S. Anyone that demands your entire January salary from you, in this recession, is a thief! Anyone who gives it is a fool! #FreeTheSheeple

I would have graduated from UNN if not for Civil war – Pst. Adeboye

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Overseer, Redeemed Christian Church of God, said he could have graduated from the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) if not for the outbreak of Nigerian civil war in 1967.

Adeboye made the disclosure in Nsukka on Tuesday after being conferred with Honorary Degree of Doctorate of Divinity.

He said he gained admission into UNN in 1963 and his matriculation number was 1800.

He said: “It was the order of the then governor of the Eastern region Chief Odumgwu Ojukwu that non Igbos should leave the East; that was why I finished at the University of Ibadan.

“I am happy that a governor of Enugu state accompanied me today to UNN while the then governor of the Eastern region sent me packing because of civil war; that is God for you.

“I am happy that the first degree I missed in UNN has been replaced with honorary doctorate degree.

“I thank UNN for finding me worthy of this award.’’

Adeboye urged Nigerians who had not given their life to Jesus Christ to do so, stressing that life is meaningless without Christ.

“Please if you have not given your life to Christ; do not waste time; do so immediately as you come to the prayer rally I am holding in this University after this award.”

In his remarks, UNN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, said the University created the special convocation to reward excellence

“This is award is to an alumnus of UNN in the department of mathematics until 1966.

“Today special convocation is to reward excellence to man who through the anointing of Jesus has imparted much to humanity.

“Adeboye is man whose accomplishment speaks more eloquently and reverberates more clearly than the voice of orator,” the VC said.

Ozumba said Adeboye was conferred with the honorary degree because of his immense contributions to mankind especially Christianity.

Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state was among important dignitaries who graced the occasion.

  • Corporate Governance Code: Adeboye will not reverse appointment of Obayemi as National General Overseer – RCCG

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has insisted that despite the suspension of Corporate Governance Code by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, FRCN ts General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, will not rescind the decision to appoint Pastor Joseph Obayemi as National Overseer.

This was confirmed by the ministry’s Head of Media and Public Relations, Pastor Segun Adebiji, while speaking to newsmen at the Redemption Camp in Mowe, Ogun State on Thursday.

Adegbiji noted that the suspension of the Corportate Governance Code by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, will not change anything.

He claimed there were already plans to appoint a National Overseer before the law took off.

If you know Daddy GO (Adeboye) very well, he does not make such an important decision without consulting the Church Council, and most importantly, God.

That decision has been made and it does not in any way affect his position as the General Overseer of the RCCG,” Adegbiji said.

So, there is no need to reverse the decision after the Federal Government has suspended the implementation of the FRC law”, he

No law empowers FRC to determine tenure of religious leaders – House of Reps

The House of Representatives has ordered a public hearing on the activities of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, particularly the Council’s decision to fix the tenure of the leadership of religious organisations.

The House passed the resolution on Wednesday in Abuja at a session which was presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara.

It came after members debated and endorsed a motion moved by the Minority Leader of the House, Mr. Leo Ogor.

Lawmakers also clarified that no agency of the Federal Government was empowered by any law passed by the National Assembly to determine how many years a religious leader should serve in office.

They noted that the FRC Act 2011 did not make provision for the tenure of office of religious bodies or non-profit organisations.

While leading the debate, Ogor said he was amazed where the FRC got its powers.

He added that while the agency might have delegated legislative powers, being a product of the National Assembly, any legislation or code it formulated should have been mandatorily approved by the same National Assembly before it could be applied.

In the extant case of the controversial Good Governance Code formulated by the FRC for non-profit organisations, the lawmaker stated that the National Assembly had no knowledge of it.

The motion stated, “The House is concerned that the Governance Code, formulated by the Council, as it relates to heads of non-profit making organisations, is a clear usurpation of the powers of the National Assembly as stipulated in Section 4 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.

“Also concerned that the National Assembly has not, in any way, approved the corporate governance code as it did with the Building Code.

“The House is convinced that codes of corporate governance must be in conformity with international best practices.

“Worried that an overzealous chief executive officer of a regulatory body can misinterpret or misapply the provisions of the code as can be clearly seen in the case of the FRC.”

In performing its duties, Ogor pointed out that the FRC was to restrict itself to accountability, transparency and probity in pursuing corporate governance principles in public and private organisations.

“No law, enacted by the National Assembly, empowers any agency to set the tenure of office for heads of non-profit organisations,” he added.

The Chairman, House Committee on Ethics/Privileges, Mr. Nicholas Ossai, took the same position as Ogor.

He told the House that though the FRC was empowered to function, the issue of fixing how long a religious leader should be in office was off its bounds.

Ossai added, “This is because we are talking about the things of God here.

“The tenure of religious leaders is determined by God, not man.

“Besides, delegated legislation like the FRC code should have been forwarded to the National Assembly for approval.

“The code in question was never forwarded to the National Assembly.”

Two other members, Mr. Istifanus Gyang, and Mr. Sunday Karimi, berated the former leadership of the FRC for its actions in implementing the code.

On his part, a former Deputy Minority Whip, Mr. Garba Mohammed-Dhatti, called for rigorous monitoring of the activities of agencies to prevent them from abusing their delegated powers.

“Overzealous heads of agencies can abuse delegated powers.

“They have to be properly monitored to save us from embarrassment,” he stated.

The controversial FRC code, among others, sets a 20-year tenure for heads of religious groups and civil rights organisations.

  • Retirement Saga: Fani-Kayode commends Buhari for suspending FRC code

Retirement Saga: Fani-Kayode commends Buhari for suspending FRC code

The former Minister of Aviation and staunch member of the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for suspending the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria code, which set a 20-year limit for leaders of all non-profit organizations.

Fani-Kayode, who is renowned for his constant criticisms of President Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC),policies said the move was a good one.

He wrote on his Twitter account on Tuesday: “I commend @MBuhari for responding to the outrage of Christians by suspending law that set to limit Church leadership to 20 yrs. Good move.”

The federal government suspended the law on Monday, after Buhari sacked Jim Obazee as the Executive Secretary of the Council.

Recall that the law had led Pastor Enoch Adeboye to step down as the Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Nigeria.

  • Group urges Adeboye to withdraw resignation

The Citizens Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights (CASER) has called on Pastor Enoch Adeboye to withdraw his resignation as the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

The call was issued in a statement by the Executive Director of the Abuja-based human rights group, Mr Frank Tietie, on Tuesday.

Tietie said CASER would seek a court injunction to compel Adeboye to reverse his decision should the “holy man of God’’ refuse to voluntarily do so.

Adeboye stepped down as the General Overseer of the RCCG in Nigeria on Saturday on the basis of the controversial Corporate Governance Code of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN).

The code, which stipulates a 20-year maximum tenure for heads of religious groups and civil rights organisations, among other provisions, was suspended by the Federal Government on Monday.

But for the suspension, the regulation could have also seen the exit of other affected men of God from the headship of their churches.

They include Bishop David Oyedepo (Living Faith Church Worldwide aka Winners’ Chapel); Pastor William Kumuyi (Deeper Christian Life Ministry) and Bishop Mike Okonkwo (The Redeemed Evangelical Mission).

According to Tietie : “CASER urges the highly revered Pastor Adeboye to change his mind and rescind his resignation as the General Overseer of RCCG.

“Where, therefore, the holy man of God refuses to review his decision to resign, CASER shall seek an order of court to compel him to remain as the general overseer.’’

He said the group was acting, not only in the interest of members of the RCCG who respect Adeboye, but also in the interest the Church generally.

  • BREAKING: Buhari sacks Obazee, head of agency that retired Adeboye

President Muhammadu on Monday approved the sack of the Chief Executive Officer/Secretary of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), Jim Obazee.

Obazee’s sack is coming on the heels of the implementation of the council’s law which led to the exit of the General Overseer (worldwide) of the Redeeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye.

Adeboye’s retirement on Saturday generated mixed reactions amongst Nigerians. However, the respected clergyman is to maintain oversight function of the global arm of the church.

The FRC rule is established by the Financial Reporting Council, Nigeria, Act No 6, 2011.

The council, which is under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, is responsible for, among others, developing and publishing accounting and financial reporting standards to be observed in the preparation of financial statements of public entities in Nigeria and for related matters.

The Governance Code of 2016 put in place by the agency to implement the Act encompasses three sectors: the private, the public and not-for-profit.

It is the not-for-profit sector, sometimes referred to as the Benevolent Sector, the Third Sector or the Civil Society Sector, that religious bodies fall under.

Section 9.1. of the code states that “The Founder or Leader of a NFPO occupies a special position in the Organisation and is committed to the success and longevity of the NFPO.”

Accordingly, a founder or leader should not take on too many responsibilities in the organisation or have an indefinite term in the running of the organisation, and is expected to not stay in office for more than 20 years.

Adeboye had while announcing his retirement as G.O criticised Buhari’s interference with church and other religious activities.

In his words: “The government has been showing increasing interest in church affairs. Unfortunately, for us in RCCG, it might not be very helpful,” he was quoted as saying on Saturday by the Tribune Newspapers during a church service.

Buhari announced the sack of the FRC boss in a statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu.

Obazee is to be replaced by Daniel Asapokhai while a new board, headed by Adedotun Sulaiman was also constituted for the agency.

No official reason was given for Mr. Obazee’s sack

Read Mr. Shehu’s full statement below:

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the immediate removal and the replacement of the Executive Secretary and the reconstitution of the board of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRN). He has appointed a Chairman and a new Executive Secretary for the council.

The new Council as approved by the President has Adedotun Sulaiman, MFR, as Chairman.

Mr. Sulaiman was a former Managing Partner/Director of Arthur Anderson and later, Accenture. He is a Chartered Accountant and a product of the University of Lagos and Harvard Business School.

The President has also approved the appointment of Daniel Asapokhai as the Executive Secretary of the Council.

Mr. Asapokhai is a partner and a Financial Reporting Specialist at the PricewaterHouseCoopers (PWC), Nigeria.

He is a product of the University of Lagos and the University of Pretoria.

  • Retirement Saga: Adeboye spits fire, orders members to join political parties ahead of 2019

The General Overseer (Worldwide) of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG has urged Christians particularly members of the RCCG household to compulsorily join or form political parties of their choice ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Adeboye made the disclosure at the weekend during the annual Ministers Thanksgiving service held at the Redemption Camp, where he also announced a new leadership structure for RCCG Nigeria, to be led by Pastor Joseph Obayemi.

In the course of the service, Adeboye reportedly began by telling the crowd that the federal government of Nigeria under President Buhari has, lately, formed the habit of interfering in the affairs of the Church.

He recounted how the government forced the RCCG to abandoned the robust retirement package for their Pastors, where full time Pastors who retired from the employ of the Church collects their full salary and benefits till death, to adopt a statutory contributory pension scheme which has resulted in Pastors, both those in active service and retirees, earning far less than they should have earned under the old scheme.

He now dwelt on the issue of how Christians are not taking advantage of their numerical strength to determine who becomes a political leader. He explained that the apathetic attitude of Christians has led to a situation where leaders are now imposed on them. His solution: “When you get home, tell every member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God to go and register for a Political Party. I want every member to be a Card carrying member of a political party.”

“You can register for any party of your choice, but by all means, register. If you register, you will have to attend your party meetings at the Ward level. That way you will be part of those to nominate the party delegates who will decide who will run for elections and be our leaders at the national level”. There was a roar of approval of this directive from the audience.

The General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God(RCCG), Worldwide, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, yesterday complained that the Buhari-led government is interfering too much in the affairs of the church.
