Osun 2022: Real reason Adeleke defeated Oyetola revealed

The real reason incumbent Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of APC lost to Senator Ademola Adeleke of the PDP at the just concluded Osun guber polls has emerged.

TheNewsGuru.com, (TNG) reports the real reason behind why Oyetola failed to clinch a second term to Osun government house has been largely attributed to his alleged ‘ self-aggrandizement policy’ while in office.

Sources privy to this development who spoke to TNG on the condition of anonymity claimed that the outgoing governor was essentially too self centered.

One of the sources in the State said”the man had an excuse for his collosal failure each he is asked why he’s is not performing.

“One of such occasions when he was asked what was affecting his performance considering the fact that he manageably won the 2018 guber election, he laid the blame on the doorsteps of COVID-19.

“But the gospel truth is that the former Governor of the state, Rauf Aregbesola was sidelined from day one and the man too snubbed Oyetola and waited to prove a point that after running Osun for eight years he knew where the hidden votes were kept.

Another source gave credence to this fact as he spoke in a similar vein describing the incumbent Governor as a “very selfish man who only cared for himself and his godfather brother from Lagos.

“He locked up the vaults and thought the 2018 inconclusive experience will resurface in 2022 but Osun people are wiser now and you can see the results now.

“The 2018 election was a daylight robbery and Nigerians knew Senator Adeleke was robbed and our Osun people rejected money for votes which they largely relied on.

“Don’t also rule out the new Electoral Act that made rigging virtually impossible because this election could have been properly rigged.

“The Electoral Act, the heavy mobilisation of CSOs, security operatives voter education of INEC killed anything rigging and ballot box snatching.

Giving credence to adequate preparation and mobilisation, Chairman of the Situation Room, Prof Adele Junaidu also praised INEC as 35percent of the registrants participated unlike Ekiti that only 15percentet of PVC bearers participated.

“With this development ballot boxing and massive rigging have been eliminated from the electoral process through the 2022 Electoral Act

Osun Battle: It’s a two-horse race as Oyetola faces old rival Adeleke

    …will Atiku or Tinubu triumph?

… expected factors to shape outcome of guber poll

    …the Tinubu and Aregbesola challenge

As state of Osun citizens prepare to vote in another governor on Saturday, it is going to be a straight two-horse race between two political foes who had encountered each other in an election that was declared inconclusive in 2018.

TheNewsGuru com, (TNG) in this analysis will take a sharp and deep analysis of the major determinants of the guber poll that’s an acid test for two presidential flag bearers of Nigeria’s two major political parties, the APC and the PDP.

Serving Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress APC and Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP are known political foes who cannot easily ignore each other.

While Oyetola has the Jagaban, Asiwaju Oba the lion of Bourdilion, former Governor of Lagos State Bola Ahmed Tinubu and APC presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections as an ‘egbon’ who in the first place miraculously made it possible for him to become a governor in 2018, Senator Ademola Adeleke is from a family  arguably adjudged as one of the richest in Osun State.

Apart from having a billionaire family background, his brother in-law, Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential flag-bearer in the 2023 elections, former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki who is also a brother, PDP governors, his nephew, talented music icon, Davido are solidly behind him to match the Jagaban factor vote for vote, cash for cash to change the narrative tomorrow (Saturday).

    DETERMINING FACTORS;

There are 30 local governments and three senatorial districts in Osun State properly oiled and serviced by Oyetola. The three sitting senators of the State are of APC extraction.

Definitely this is a big minus to the PDP camp of Adeleke if he has not done enough ground work to strategically put his trusted men in the senatorial districts to galvanise votes for him.

This could signal a massive defeat for PDP if the three senators are on ground definitely they will mobilise who is who in their districts to rubbish PDP.

    THE TINUBU FACTOR:

Osun State is Tinubu’s ancestral home, the candidate is his blood brother and above all Tinubu grabbed the state from PDP and enthroned his prodigy Rauf Aregbesola the current Minister of Interior as Governor.

Osun is like Lagos to Tinubu, a defeat by the PDP in his ancestral home will amount to a collosal loss as same could be replicated at the national level next year.

Armed with this fear factor, the Jagaban will relocate mountains to ensure Osun is delivered on Saturday. Anything short of that spells doom at the national level.

The south western enclave of Nigeria is predominantly an APC affair with five serving governors at the beck and call of Tinubu, nothing short of a victory must prevail.

    THE ATIKU FACTOR:

Atiku is related to Osun by marriage. His wife Titi is a daughter of the soil and this could help in no small way. Atiku on the other hand knows that a victory in Osun could translate to half a victory for him in 2023.

But coming from abroad 72hours to the battle might not be enough to help him mobilise soldiers for Adeleke to unseat Oyetola who just last week paid Osun pensioners outstanding N1.6billion  payments. This definitely was a political strategy to make the oldies show up at the polling booths on Saturday.

    THE CASH FOR VOTE FACTOR:

Take it or leave it, cash for vote is the weapon with which Nigerian politicians deploy to win elections in this clime.

Trader money was introduced to make it look legal in Nigeria but certainly no sane Nigerian will venture into politics at any level without having a war chest to conquer the electorate.

Both major parties, PDP and APC will match each other to deliver cash to garner votes on Saturday.

The apex electoral body, INEC on Wednesday has declared that cash for vote does not fall within its purview and the security operatives who are very hungry may just look the other way while politicians grease the palms of voters.

This is a critical determinant in the Osun guber election as cash will flow in all directions.

    THE INEC FACTOR:

There were 1, 256, 569 PVCs produced for registered voters in Osun State ahead of the distribution exercise.

By the end of the exercise on 9th March, 697, 574 cards (55.5%) were collected by verified holders, comprising 327, 388 (46.9%) males and 370, 186 (53.1%) females.

The unclaimed cards were at the end of the exercise taken to respective local government office of INEC in the state for onward collection by holders. More recent records show that a total of 736, 570 cards, representing 59.6% of the total volume produced for the state, had been collected by verified holders as at 23rd April, 2014.

This left a balance of 519, 999 cards as at that date.

For the Continuous Voter Registration, 149, 089 new registrants were recorded in Osun – pending removal of multiple registrations and the application of INEC’s business rules for printing Permanent Voter Cards. This figure was made up of 70, 024 (47%) males and 79, 065 (53%) females.

The above represents the available PVCs for the Osun guber election. INEC has a major to play. Already a coalition of NGOs on Thursday accused INEC of perfecting plans of massively rigging the election to favour APC on Saturday.

INEC is yet to deny this allegation and this portends danger ahead of the election that may play a pivotal signpost on how the 2023 general elections will look like.

The electoral body had promised that within 12hours the Osun guber election results will be ready.

    THE AREGBESOLA FACTOR:

It’s a known fact that former governors are demi gods in the Nigerian political firmament.

    Yes it’s the truth.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola cannot easily be shoved aside. If it’s true as being speculated in many quarters, it’s not going to be an easy ride for Oyetola back to government House.

Aregbesola as an immediate past governor of the State of Osun most likely will play a damaging role that could unsettle the Tinubu camp in Osun.

The former Minister apparently to show his anger was not at the mega rally to finally sell Oyetola to Osun citizens. This is an ominous sign ahead the election on Saturday.

    WILL TINUBU OR ATIKU TRIUMPH?

This would have been an easy question to answer but given the fact that the APC camp is divided against itself while the PDP remains a  united front, it might not be a walk over for APC.

The Tinubu camp has the incumbency factor working for it to emerge victorious while PDP will rely on its old glory that’s fast waning.

Either way, the Tinubu camp looks good to overshadow the Atiku camp tomorrow (Saturday).

There are 16 political parties registered to run the guber race, none except for Labour Party that made a little foray last week and little noise in the media has the followership of PDP and APC in the State.

The other 14 political parties are onlookers in the Osun guber battle.

  • Living in their children’s shadow? – Francis Ewherido

Living in their children’s shadow? – Francis Ewherido

    By Francis Ewherido

The first time I saw it on social media, I recoiled. A young writer was describing the great Chief Femi Falana and all he could say was Falana is the father of Falz. Chief Falana is, of course, the father of Falz (Folarin Falana), but before Falz became a sensation, there was Femi Falana. As at 1990, when Falz was born, Femi Falana was already a well-known human rights activist with older human rights activists like his late former boss, Alao Aka-Bashorun, Chief Gani Fawehinmi and Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, amongst others. They were constant thorns in the flesh of the military government. Falana contributed greatly to the enthronement of democratic rule in 1999. He remains active till date. As a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, he has hit the zenith of the legal profession. Yet the young writer could not introduce him based on his achievements; he tagged him “father of Falz” to show that Falana is an important person. Of Multi-billionaire, Dr. Deji Adeleke, one young writer’s headline says: “Dr. Deji Adeleke (Davido’s father).”

I also read another story, where Femi Otedola was introduced as the father of DJ Cuppy. In this case, I did not recoil; rather I laughed. What goes around comes around. When I came to Lagos in the 80s. Sir Michael Otedola, the father of Femi Otedola, was well known. In 1992, he was elected the governor of Lagos State. He stayed till 1993 when Gen. Sani Abacha’s coup ended his reign. Fast forward to year 2000 and beyond, Femi Otedola came on the scene and I started reading, “Sir Michael Otedola, father of Femi Otedola.” So, if the media introduce Femi Otedola as the father of DJ Cuppy, he is only being served a healthy dose of his own medicine – a medicine every (successful) parent would love to drink, though.

I will not refer to Femi Falana as the father of Falz, Dr. Deji Aleleke as father of Davido and Femi Otedola as the father of DJ Cuppy in the headlines or first paragraphs of a write-up. These men have made their marks and should be introduced based on their accomplishments. “Father of this or that” appendages will only come in the later paragraphs. This is without prejudice to what their children have achieved. They have achieved so much at an age when many of their contemporaries are still trying to find their feet. Many of their mates – some of them graduates – are still being housed, fed and clothed by their parents.

Some people say that successful young men and women from privileged backgrounds made it because of their family background, but I disagree. They knew what they wanted at an early stage; they had dreams and pursued them; they found their purpose early and committed themselves to living it; they had talents and skills and honed them. If you ascribe their success to only their illustrious background what about Wizkid and other grass to grace stories? What about other young people from rich and privileged backgrounds, who are wasting away in lives debauchery, drug addiction, alcoholism, aimlessness and purposeless?

Climbing out of poverty and anonymity to prominence, especially in Nigeria, can be very tough, no doubt, but we all live and operate in this difficult environment. My experience in life is that making excuses is very unhelpful. I work with some youths and I am tracking their progress. My experience so far is that those who are driven by purpose, who know what they want, are making better progress than those who fall and go for anything. Our lives need to be purpose-driven. You can start off with any legitimate job that comes your way, but what are your plans for the future? Many youths have no medium or long term plans. You better start thinking about your future even in the midst of difficulties. Introspect and discover the wonderful talents and skills God has deposited in you. Even while you are doing “anything” for a living, hone those innate skills. Your chance will come and only people, who are prepared, take chances. Do not dig your talents in the ground like that foolish and wicked servant in the bible; use them, even if pro bono, for now like the two wise servants (25: 14-25). Set your goals – short-term, medium-term and long-term – and let your sight be fixed permanently on them.

Read biographies of people, who have succeeded in your area of interest. The biographies are online, in newspaper articles and in books. Is it entertainment, publishing, fashion, entrepreneurship, manufacturing? They are all there. Some of these people were in a similar situation you are now at some points in their lives. Some of them are still very much around and might be willing to provide mentorship if you approach them. But you must know the rules guiding mentor-mentee relationships and abide by them.

I see too much of blame game among young people. Everything and everyone around them have contributed to their predicament. They are the only party without a fault. How? With those character flaws, lack of self-development and absence of clarity of what you want? Common, success and greatness come from within and only manifest without. Go and fulfil your own part of the bargain first, the external lines will fall into the right places someday.

Back to successful silver-spoon kids, their privileged background certainly quickened their journey to fame, wealth and stardom, but they also worked hard. I can never diminish the success these youngsters have achieved. Some youngsters from privileged backgrounds just want to live off the family wealth and name; they have no interest in adding more value to the family name. In 1985 at Nsukka, I was introduced to the nephew of a prominent politician and political office holder in the Second Republic. I introduced myself as “Francis,” but he introduced himself with his family name. I thought as youngsters we should call ourselves by our first name, but he was just cool with his family name and hung on to it as if it was a ticket to heaven.

But look at these successful silver-spoon kids. Falz abandoned Falana and simply went with the stage name, Falz. Florence Otedola is DJ Cuppy. David Adedeji Adeleke is simply Davido. No clinging to their famous surnames, some of which go way back. DJ Cuppy’s grandfather, Sir Michael Otedola, was a former Lagos State Governor, while Davido’s grandfather, Senator Raji Ayoola Adeleke, was a Second Republic senator. They forsook these door-opening names and took on stage names.

But our young writers should study some history. Headlining Femi Otedola as DJ Cuppy’s father, Femi Falana as Falz’s father and “Dr. Deji Adeleke (Davido’s Father),” diminishes what these men have achieved. But this “misnomer” has crept into Wikipedia. Femi Falana’s biography in Wikipedia is just 98 words, but Falz’s is 1018 words. May be, younger writers also wrote them (Lol), but who cares? Femi Falana is Falz’s father after all. My prayers for all parents is that our children should reach much greater heights than us; may they achieve successes that we could not even have envisioned.

Court frees nurse accused of killing ex-Osun gov, Adeleke

Alfred Aderibigbe, a personal nurse to ex-Osun State Governor, Isiaka Adeleke, arraigned for killing the politician was on Thursday discharged and acquitted by the court.

Aderibigbe, who treated the late Adeleke before his death, had been dragged before an Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo, after a coroner inquest indicted him of administering drug overdose on the deceased.

But Justice Ayo Oyebiyi in his judgement today, after the trial that lasted almost two and half years, declared that the prosecution could not prove that Aderibigbe killed the deceased and subsequently discharged him of any wrongdoing.

Upon his first arraignment before the court on on June 8, 2018, Aderibigbe pleaded not guilty to murder charge pressed against him.

The offence he was accused of was said to be contrary to section 316 and punishable under section 319 of the Criminal Code Law Cap.36 Law of Osun State 2003.

During the trial, Aderibigbe told the court that the drugs he administered were given to him by the deceased.

But one of the nine witnesses called by the prosecution team led by Acting Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Dapo Adeniji, and the then Chief Medical Director of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Akeem Lasisi, told the court that the late Adeleke died of drug overdose.

However, Soji Oyetayo, who appeared for the defendant, insisted that the prosecution failed to properly investigate the matter.

He said none of the witnesses called by the prosecution was at the scene of the alleged crime or visited the scene, adding that the prosecution did not retrieve the doctor’s prosecution that was in the custody of the late Adeleke to further prove its case.

According to him, Adeleke was in need of medical attention before the defendant was invited to attend to him, stressing that the late politician was suffering from hypertension and gout.

Justice Oyebiyi, after considering all sides to the matter, discharged and acquitted the defendant.

BREAKING: Court discharges Sen. Adeleke‎ over alleged exams malpractices

A Federal High Court in Abuja has discharged former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke in the alleged examination malpractices trial involving him and four others.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a ruling on Friday, said he was minded to discharge Adeleke in view of the prosecution’s decision to withdraw charges against him.

‎Justice Ekwo elected to continue with the trial of the other four co-defendants in the case, who were re-arraigned on Thursday on a seven-count amended charge filed in the name of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

    Background:

Adeleke was arraigned before a Federal High Court in Abuja in October 2018 along with Sikiru Adeleke (who is said to be the senator’s relative), Alhaji Aregbesola Mufutau (a head teacher), Gbadamosi Thomas Ojo (registrar) and Dare Samuel Olutope (a teacher).

Ademola and Sikiru were accused of fraudulently registering as students of Ojo-Aro Community Grammar School, Ojo-Aro, Osun State, to enable them sit for the National Examinations Council (NECO) examination of June/July 2017.

The other three defendants were accused of aiding the commission of the alleged offence.

At the resumed hearing on Thursday, prosecution lawyer Simon Lough said the state had amended the charge to exclude Adeleke following his continued absence in court.

  • Osun: Presidency blasts Atiku over consolation message to Adeleke, PDP on Supreme Court ruling

Osun: Presidency blasts Atiku over consolation message to Adeleke, PDP on Supreme Court ruling

The Presidency on Friday tackled former Vice President and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, over his comments on the Supreme Court ruling affirming the election of Mr Gboyega Oyetola as governor of Osun State.
Atiku, in a statement on the ruling, had stated: “I urge the nation’s judiciary to take a pulse of the nation and reflect it. In their hands, God has placed a great responsibility.
“The duty to ensure that justice is done, irrespective of the pressure to do otherwise, by the powers that be,” he said
But the Presidency, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said that it finds Atiku’s reaction very ridiculous, and comical.
The statement reads “Many things fly in the face of logic, reason, and legality in this portion of the statement. Alhaji Abubakar urged the judiciary to reflect the pulse of the nation in their judgments. Learned people know that the judiciary comes to conclusions drawing from matters of law placed before it, and not sentiments, or so-called “pulse of the nation.”
“A pertinent question is: how does the judiciary gauge the pulse of the nation? Is it even positioned to do such? Is the judiciary established for that purpose, or to dispense justice, even if the Heavens fall?
“Again, there is insinuation of inducement in the statement, when the PDP candidate said the judiciary should ensure justice is done, “irrespective of the pressure to do otherwise, by the powers that be.”
“We see this as an attempt to browbeat the judiciary, thus causing it to entertain sentiment in the ongoing petition on the presidential election before the tribunal. If anybody has the tendency or proclivity to put pressure on the judiciary, Nigerians know where the finger points, and it is definitely not at President Muhammadu Buhari.
“This was a man who had thrice taken his electoral challenges to the judiciary, up to the Supreme Court. And not once was he accused of trying to influence the process or put pressure on the courts.
“When the All Progressives Congress (APC) lost Zamfara and Rivers States, arising from judicial proclamations, then, there was no “pressure to do otherwise, by the powers that be.”
“But now that the victory of the party in Osun was upheld, there is insinuation of pressure from those who have never learnt to play straight,” he added
According to him, President Buhari has always been committed to fair play, which he noted was clearly evident in the last general elections.
Buhari, he said, remains committed to even-handedness and justice always.

  • Osun: Lawan charges Oyetola to be magnanimous in victory

The President of the Senate, Dr Ahmad Lawan on Friday congratulated the Gov. Gboyega Oyetola of Osun over his victory at the Supreme Court, urging him to be magnanimous in victory.
Lawan, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mohammed Isa described the judgement as victory to democracy, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the people of Osun.
He urged Oyetola to put behind him past events during the electioneering and its aftermath litigation, and concentrate on tackling the challenges facing the state.
He urged him to run an all-inclusive government where everybody in the state would be carried along.
Lawan said: “Your victory is a great joy and achievement for our party.
“We are delighted that after a long legal battle, Osun state can finally settle down for good governance.
