ADP faults FG on cybersecurity tax

The Action Democratic Party (ADP), has faulted the introduction of the Cyber Security Tax by the Federal Government describing it as an additional burden on Nigerians.

Mr Yabaji Sani, the ADP National Chairman said this on Wednesday in Abuja at the presentation of Certificate of Return to the party’s Ondo State governorship candidate.

Sani said that successive governments in Nigeria had imposed compulsory levies on individuals and entities, saying however that excessive taxation without consideration on the plight of the masses was injurious.

“All over the world the only form of raising funds and revenue by the government is through taxation.

‘`If that is the fundamental reason which is accepted universally that government must tax citizens to earn revenue to develop, provide security and welfare for the people, perhaps the government is in order to levy people.

“But in our situation, if we look at what is happening today, this government is looking for revenue left, right and center from the wrong place, from the wrong people and at the wrong time.

“With what is happening to our naira, foreign exchange, the level of poverty, unemployment, and suffering due to removal of fuel subsidy, unification of exchange rate, increase in electricity tariff and now the cyber security crime levy.

“It is insensitive to put pressure on the masses when the government knows that the loss of revenue of the country is through the oil and gas sector and not through the Central Bank of Nigeria,’’ he said.

He urged the government to capitalise on the oil and gas sector and other sectors of the economy where resources were being looted and unaccounted for to raise revenue for developmental projects.

‘’These sectors have the capacity to fund the government without mounting pressure on the masses,’’ he said.

Sani also urged the government to put in place policies that would rather protect the masses without necessarily taxing them beyond the reasonable limit.

He said that the cyber security taxation was ill timed and should be reconsidered for the benefits of the citizens, adding also that Nigerians should begin to question the government’s usage of taxes.

Speaking, Mr Ayodeji Akinnodi, the ADP Ondo governorship candidate promised to ensure free healthcare services and free education in the state, if given the mandate in the Sept.21 poll.

He urged the people to vote for him, so he could turn things around in the state.

43-year-old businessman secures ADP guber ticket in Imo

A 43-year-old businessman,, Mr Nnamdi Ezelioha, has secured the ticket of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) for the Nov. 11 governorship election in Imo.

Ezelioha, who was the sole contender in the primary election held on Sunday in Owerri, became the fourth governorship candidate after the candidates of the APC, PDP and LP.

The Chairman of the Primary Election Committee, Mr Steven Okonkwo, said all the 306 delegates for the primary voted in favour of Ezelioha.

The Deputy National Welfare Secretary of ADP, Mr James Ogboelo, expressed confidence that the party would occupy the state Government House after the governorship election.

He explained that Ezelioha emerged the sole candidate after being successfully screened by the national secretariat of the party.

“I thank God that we have a candidate who everyone can attest to as the youngest candidate in the election. He has the capacity to run the state.

“We all know the history of Imo state after our late icon, Sam Mbakwe. This time around, God has sent an anointed candidate to rescue the state,” he stated.

Earlier, the state chairman of the party, Mr Uzor Mmezi, described the governorship candidate of the party as a “reliable and youthful hand that will redefine governance in Imo state”.

“We have been deluded, disappointed and cheated.

“We pray that the ADP in Imo state will usher in a governor that will make the change and bring in the most deserved leadership after November 2023,” he said.

In his acceptance speech, Ezelioha, who hails from Ideato South Local Government Area of the state, commended the delegates and stakeholders for the confidence reposed in him.

He said, if given the governorship mandate in November, he would ensure a people-oriented governance and provide technology-driven solutions to the economic, health, education and industrial challenges facing the state.

Kaduna: Buhari’s in-law, Sani Sha’aban begins gov campaign under ADP

Ahead of the March 11 governorship election in Kaduna State, President Muhammadu Buhari’s in-law, Sani Sha’aban, has begun his governorship campaign on the platform of the Action Democratic Party.

Sha’aban, a former governorship aspirant and founding member of the All Progressives Congress in Kaduna, resigned from the ruling party last year.

The former member of the House of Representatives, who contested for the governorship primary in May 2022, had noted that the APC in Kaduna had “little or no regard for human lives, social integration, and rule of law,” hence his decision to quit his membership of the party.

To realize his dream, Sha’aban moved to the ADP.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that while flagging off his campaign at Tashan Yari in Makarfi Local Government Area of the state, on Monday, he reeled out promises including tackling poverty as well as the prevailing insecurity in the state.

Addressing the crowd, the governorship candidate, who had contested for the position in the state on the platform of the All Nigeria People Party, noted that he was in the race to add value to the people whom he claimed, were living in abject poverty.

While saying that he would reclaim the state from its current state of decadence, Sha’aban maintained that he would tackle the spate of insecurity that had over the years, prevented farmers from farming.

Speaking shortly after the rally, the governorship hopeful told newsmen that he would bring back the lost peace and glory enjoyed in the state in the past three decades “where Muslims and Christians lived in peace without suspicion.”

He added: “My number one priority if God gives me the chance and opportunity, is to bring back the past glory of Kaduna, a state where Christians and Muslims dwell among themselves without any fear or any thought of being harmed in whatever way or manner.

“I will bring back the peace and glory the state used to enjoy in the last three decades, then all other development projects such as education, agriculture and normal trading will begin to take place.

“Kaduna used to be the hub of ginger; potatoes and various cash crops but today, all we can see is abject poverty on the faces of those who are growing such crops. Kaduna is in a serious catastrophic situation today.

“What is the basis of having roads and you don’t have the vehicles to ply them or what are the basis of having roads when you have people that have not been paid salaries, whose children cannot go to school; people that have no places that they can call trading places in the form of markets. Kaduna is virtually on its knees.”

Also speaking, the Director-General of the ADP Governorship Campaign Council, Ben Kure, told the crowd that if elected, the administration of Sha’aban would carry the masses along and listen to their yearnings.

He added that the campaign council decided to take the rally off the state capital “because if we say the masses are our topmost priority, we must go to where the masses are.”

According to him, “With our government, the masses will have their demands met, unlike in the past where political actors promise you and abandon you after the election.”

Earlier, the state chairman of the party, Umar Isah, noted that the state was in dire need of positive change, adding that only Sha’aban could effect such change of bringing succour to the state.

He, therefore, appealed to the people of the state to close ranks and flush out the ruling All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party in the state.

“The people of Kaduna State are yearning for change and Sha’aban will bring in the much needed change in the state. And the only alternative is to bring in the ADP and Shaban in the forthcoming election,” he said.

Teachers’ Day: Kano ADP governorship candidate pledges better working conditions for teachers

Action Democratic Party (ADP) governorship candidate in Kano State, Alhaji Sha’aban Sharada, has promised better working conditions for teachers in the state, if elected governor in 2023.

Sharada, who is representing Kano Municipal Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, said this in a message issued by the Spokesperson of ADP Governorship Campaign Council, Abass Yusha’u, to commemorate this year’s World Teachers’ Day.

According to Sharada, if the party is voted into power, government will identify its best brains from public primary schools to tertiary institutions and support them in the pursuit of their chosen disciplines.

“The logo of our great party is book, which signifies that the party, its candidate and all the aspirants vying for elective positions will reposition the state’s comatose education sector.

“ADP will not only focus on remodeling our Western system of education but also, the Quranic and Tsangaya Schools which the people of the state have been pursuing for centuries.

“It’s time for all Kano patriotic citizens to join hands with ADP in saving the education sector in Kano which is collapsing as a result of negligence of the ruling party,” he said.

He said that teachers bore an indelible mark in the lives of their students by sacrificing and raising leaders of tomorrow.

Sharada, however, noted that the teachers were usually left at the mercy of the few who were exploiting the system for their personal gains, adding that he would change the narrative.

He urged the teachers in the state not to be discouraged from performing their sacred duties of educating and informing the public.

The governorship candidate paid tributes to some pre-independence politicians who were teachers in their own right.

He said that people like the late Malam Aminu Kano, Yusuf Maitama Sule, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria’s former Prime Minister and the late Malam Saadu -Zungur contributed to nation building through teaching and politics.

Newsmen reports that United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) had set aside Oct. 5 of every year to mark World Teachers’ Day.

APC screens Oyetola, 2 others for Osun governorship

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Screening Committee on Thursday in Abuja, screened Gov. Gboyega Oyetola of Osun and two other governorship aspirants ahead of its Feb. 19 governorship primary election in the state.

The other two aspirants screened by the committee are a former Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Lasun Yusuff and former Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti.

Adeoti recently defected from the Action Democratic Party (ADP) to join the APC, and Oyetola, the incumbent Governor, is seeking re-election.

Speaking with newsmen after the screening, Oyetola said his performance in office was enough to ensure his electoral victory, both at the party’s primary and the state’s governorship election on July 16.

“Let me say this, my performance in office in all areas of endeavour, as I speak today, is enough for me to win the party’s primary and the state’s governorship election.

“By every standard, we have done so well within the last three and half years, and I have been able to justify the confidence reposed in me by the people.

“I have been very much involved in the party; I’m not a novice when it comes to the issue of party administration,” he said.

Oyetola said he was prepared for the election, adding that he had gone round to 18 of the 34 local government areas of the state to campaign on why he should be re-elected.

The governor said he would not be intimidated by anyone in the race.

According to him, my team would continue with the strategic engagements and would not leave anything for granted.

Oyetola, however, said he would need the endorsement of the party’s critical stakeholders in the state to be able to fly its flag.

“I have been going around to ask for the support of members of the party in all the local government areas of the state, so I am prepared,” Oyetola said.

  • Why Nigeria does not fit into ‘failed state’ narrative – ADP

Why Nigeria does not fit into ‘failed state’ narrative – ADP

The Action Democratic Party (ADP) says Nigeria is not a failed state in spite of its numerous challenges.
The National Chairman of ADP, Mr Yusuf Sani, made the assertion at a news conference in Abuja on Saturday.
The conference was organised by the party on the state of the nation.
Sani, who noted that Nigeria’s challenges included decline in economy and insecurity, said that the challenges were not peculiar to it.
He said that many developed countries had been confronted with similar or worse situations.
He said that the manner the Federal Government would handle the issues would determine how the country would progress.
“Nigeria is not a failed state. It still has all it takes, both the potential and opportunities, to leverage on to get back on its feet.
“If addressed properly, there would be boost in democracy and governance,” he said.
He urged intensified efforts at ending killings, devastation of homesteads, displacements and rape.
Sani said that the nation’s experience with Boko Haram insurgency should be a lesson on how ‘a little flicker of fire must be put out in good time before it develops into a raging inferno’.
He also urged end to banditry and kidnapping.
He called for constitution of a judicial panel of equity for probing of all former service chiefs over allegations of misuse of office and alleged misappropriation of funds, especially those meant for purchase of arms and ammunition.
“We want the president to declare a state of emergency across the country on insecurity; service chiefs should be deployed to the highly disturbed zones.
“The ADP also calls for immediate probe of the NNPC on subsidy, refineries turn-around maintenance at the projected cost of $1.5 billion for Port Harcourt refinery, among others.
“The National Assembly should succinctly perform its constitutional oversight function with regard to funds appropriated to the Armed Forces and acquit itself of the perception of complacency and complicity,” he said.
He recommended massive recruitment and enlistment in the Armed Forces toward safeguarding the territorial integrity of the country.
Sani said it was time for the nation to consider involving communities in security surveillance and policing.
He said community security such as the use of hunters and local vigilantes had proved to be rewarding in many instances.
Sani also called for decentralisation of the police with states and local councils having their police formations.
“Now that the National Assembly has embarked on another effort at constitutional amendment, the ADP calls on the lawmakers to consider amending relevant sections of the law on the police to make for decentralisation of the force.
“This is borne out of our conviction that certain forms of crimes are more effectively controlled from the community level due to the advantage of knowledge of their environments.

Ex-Reps Speaker, Dimeji Bankole perfects plans to join APC

Mr Oladimeji Bankole, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, has expressed his readiness to dump his party, Action Democratic Party (ADP) for All Progressives Congress (APC).

Alhaji Mamman Mohammed, Director-General, Press and Media Affairs to Gov. Mai Mala Buni, Chairman, APC Caretaker and Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC), said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

“Governor. Mai Mala Buni of Yobe and Chairman, APC CECPC today hosted Bankole and Gov. Muhammad Badaru of Jigawa.

“The three leaders discussed on wide range of political issues, including the movement of the former speaker and his supporters into APC.

“It is evident that APC’s opportunities in Ogun are growing and widening,” Mohammed said.

He said former Gov. Gbenga Daniel of Ogun, who was also former Director-General of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Organisation recently defected to APC.

Reacting to Bankole’s move to join the APC, Alhaji Yabayi Sani, ADP National Chairman said he would not be surprised if he decided to join the APC.

“That is typical of an average Nigerian politician, they are only good in sharing not in building,” he said.

Edo poll: Governorship candidate asks court to void Obaseki’s election

The governorship candidate of Action Democratic Party (ADP) in the September 19 poll in Edo State, Iboyi Emmanuel, is set to challenge the victory of Governor Godwin Obaseki at the Election Petitions Tribunal.

Emmanuel spoke through ADP National Chairman Yabagi Yusuf Sani at a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja.

Sani said the decision to take the legal action was aimed at strengthening democratic rule.

The ADP National Chairman said the party believed that the court should determine the propriety of Obaseki’s educational certificates and the process that led to his selection as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the poll.

“The questions are very simple. Can a candidate buy nomination forms from two parties in the same election cycle? Can a student get into a university with just three Credits and without Mathematics and English?

“Can a political party shift the date of the sales of its nomination forms after giving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the public a date? Can a political party extend the date of its primaries with just five days’ notice to INEC when the Electoral Act stipulates seven days? Can a dead and buried Vice Chancellor sign a student’s result and date it after his death?”

“Most importantly, if any of these issues is resolved in the negative, can the PDP be said to have fielded a candidate in the Edo State governorship election?

“We should all be thankful to our candidate, Iboyi Emmanuel, who has gone to court to ask these fundamental questions on behalf of Nigerians. The man will end up deepening our democracy.

“This country shouldn’t be about political parties; it should be about laws, justice and equity. I want to assure you that we are ready to prosecute this matter to a logical conclusion until justice is done to the great people of Edo State,” Sani said.
