Electricity tariff hike: DisCo apologises to customers over wrongful charges

The Abuja Electricity Distribution (AEDC) has issued an apology on wrong charges faced by some Band A customers who tried to recharge their meters following the new tariff regime.

The Management of AEDC tendered the apology in a notice to its customers in Abuja on Thursday.

It said, ” This is to inform customers across the AEDC franchise that we are aware of the wrong charges faced by some Band A customers who tried to recharge their meters following the new tariff regime.

“This is due to a system glitch caused by the reclassification of some Band A customers who have now been downgraded to B due to the number of hours of electricity supply enjoyed over the past few weeks.

“These erstwhile Band A customers who vended were charged the new tariff of N225 per Kilowatt Hour. Our team is working to identify the customers affected and all excess charges will be refunded, ‘’ it said.

According to AEDC, the situation also saw some Band A customers who are now charged N225 vend at the old rate.

The company said that once the glitch is resolved, these categories of customers would now recharge their meters at the new rate of N225, which will ensure they enjoy a minimum supply of 20 hours daily.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to our customers during this change.

“We remain committed to improving the power supply to all categories of customers, and we crave your understanding and support as we do this, ‘’ it said.

Blackout: AEDC aggravating suffering of consumers in parts of FCT

An electricity consumer Mr Jimoh Olarewaju says the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) is aggravating suffering of its consumers in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Olarewaju, who resides in Kubwa said this in an interview with NAN in Abuja on Sunday.

He was reacting to AEDC’s notice to its customers in Kubwa Abuja:

The notice read in part: ” the power outage currently being experienced is due to the stormy weather that has damaged several critical equipment serving these areas.

“F01, Military Pension Board, Dantata Estate, Chikakore Community, Byazhin, Across, Arab Road, Mopol Barracks, Kubwa Extension III, FCDA Owners Occupier, Army Scheme, Phase 3, Phase 4, and environs.

”Our team of engineers are currently working hard to rectify and restore the power supply soonest.”

He said that the notice was not tenable as AEDC had come out with three excuses on the Kubwa electricity supply situation.

He said’ ”first they said it was feeder pillar that had issue, Secondly, they said some of their equipment were vandalised and now stormy weather damaged critical equipment.

”It is over one week that parts of Kubwa had been without power supply, before now we normally have it for two or three hours a day but now it is total blackout.

”We have never had it so bad and it is unfortunate that AEDC can keep a whole community in darkness for days.

”What people are saying that the issue is a delebrate effort to sabotage this government as we all know that people are going through a lot presently,”he said.

According to him, with the removal of fuel subsidy, the dollar issue, the only thing that make people sit at home is electricity and this is not available.

Olarewaju said that consumers were complaining bitterly as it was affecting their businesses.

He said that small scale businesses were affected the most as they use electricity to run their business.

”In my farm, I now depend on generator to pump water to preserve the fishes in the pond and most of them are dying

”At at the same time, there is scarcity of fuel and people are queuing to get the product and the money is not there.

”We even learnt that there is enough electricity to transmit but the distribution companies are not taking enough.

“That is why people are saying it is sabotage, if the power supply is available we are ready to buy,” he said.

  • Why residents of Abuja, Benin, PH, Ibadan are suffering from epileptic power supply

Why residents of Abuja, Benin, PH, Ibadan are suffering from epileptic power supply

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu has given insights as to why residents of Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan are currently suffering from epileptic power supply.

As a result, the Minister has summoned the Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) to an emergency meeting.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Adelabu as saying efforts had been made to improve electricity supply in the aforementioned cities but that it is disheartening that power supply continue to deteriorate.

The Minister of Power disclosed that his ministry has been exerting pressure on the Generating Companies (GENCOs) to enhance their performance, resulting in a recent increase in generation to over 4000MW.

He said despite the progress made, certain distribution companies are failing to adequately distribute the power supplied by TCN, while acknowledging that vandalism of power infrastructure exacerbates the problem in the regions.

While urging electricity consumers to remain patient with the present epileptic power supply, Adelabu said plans are underway to settle outstanding debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies.

In a statement released via his official Facebook page, Adelabu wrote:

“As the Minister of Power, I am deeply concerned about the deteriorating electricity supply across the country.

“In response to this pressing issue, I have summoned the Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), as well as the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), to a crucial meeting.

“The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the worsening power supply in their respective regions and to collectively find lasting solutions.

“It is disheartening to witness the decline in power supply despite the concerted efforts to improve the situation.

“The Ministry has been exerting pressure on the Generating Companies (GENCOs) to enhance their performance, resulting in a recent increase in generation to over 4000MW.

“Despite this progress, certain distribution companies are failing to adequately distribute the power supplied by TCN, while vandalism of power infrastructure exacerbates the problem in regions such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.

“Moving forward, I am committed to holding all distribution companies accountable for their performance. Willful non-performance will not be tolerated, and severe consequences, including license revocation, may be imposed.

“Additionally, I have instructed TCN to prioritize repair works on damaged transmission towers and power lines to improve supply in affected regions.

“During recent supervisory visits to power generating plants, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by the sector.

“Plans are underway to settle outstanding debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies, which will alleviate the financial strain and contribute to improved generation levels nationwide.

“I urge electricity consumers to remain patient as we work tirelessly to address these issues and provide better service to all Nigerians”.

EPILEPTIC power supply: FG summons AEDC, IBEDC, TCN ‘ogas’ to explain

Apparently disappointed by the epileptic distribution of power, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has summoned the Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) over the worsening power supply in their regions.

The Minister in a statement by his media aide, Bolaji Tunji, also summoned the Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Sule Ahmed Abdulazeez over the deteriorating power situation.

In a letter signed by the Director, Distribution Services at the Federal Ministry of Power, Engineer B.U Mustapha, the CEOs of the institutions were asked to attend a meeting called by the minister in the coming week to discuss issues bothering on worsening electricity supply in their regions with a view to proffering a lasting solution.

The minister also stated that the management of other non-performing DISCOs would be queried as reports continued to filter in on situations in their regions.

“These two DISCOs have been summoned due to the worsening power supply situation in their regions despite improved supply from TCN”, he said.

According to the statement, the ministry had been putting pressure on the Generating Companies (GENCOs) to improve performance and generation has been ramped up to over 4000MW in recent days.

“So, we expect power supply to have improved across the country, unlike what we are experiencing in some regions, presently. Findings revealed that some distribution companies were deliberately not taking up power supply from TCN while some power lines were also damaged by vandals in Abuja , Benin, Port Harcourt and Ibadan regions.

“Going forward, the minister said focus would be on all the DISCOs to compel them to expected performance while wilful, non- performance by any DISCO could suffice as a reason for severe punishment or outright license revocation,” the statement said.

The minister has also directed TCN to immediately commence repair works on the damaged transmission towers and power lines in order to improve supply in the affected regions.

Recall that the minister had embarked on supervisory visits to some of the power generating plants in the last few months.

He was in Kainji hydro power plant which will soon embark on an expansion plan to boost the existing 560MW operational capacity. He also visited Benue and Taraba states to assess the infrastructure being constructed to evacuate an additional 30 megawatts from the Kashimbilla hydo power station to the national grid. Presently, only 10MW is being evacuated from the hydro power plant.

The minister was also in Olorunshogo and Omotosho thermal plants in Ogun and Ondo states, Ihvobor and Azura power plants in Edo state respectively.

During the visits, he assured these power plants that plans were underway by the federal government to defray part of the outstanding debts being owed the power generation companies and the gas supply companies.

“With this, succour is close to electricity consumers nationwide as we expect this action to improve generation levels across the country.

“He also appealed to electricity consumers to exercise a little patience while the situation is being turned around,” it added.
