  • S/Africa crowned U-20 AFCON champions after historic win

S/Africa crowned U-20 AFCON champions after historic win

South Africa won their maiden CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Morocco in Sunday night’s final at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo.

Gomolemo Kekana’s stunning second-half strike proved decisive, as the, Southern Africans claimed the trophy and rewrote history by overcoming a North African opponent in the tournament for the first time.

The only goal of the final came in the 70th minute when Kekana unleashed a powerful right-footed effort from outside the box, bending the ball into the top corner.

The goal, awarded after a VAR review, broke the deadlock in a tense contest dominated by tactical discipline and defensive organisation.

Kekana’s goal capped a superb tournament for South Africa, who had never reached a U-20 AFCON final since 1997, when they lost to Morocco.

This time, they flipped the script, avenging that defeat to lift the trophy and become the 12th different nation to win the title.

Both sides entered the final unbeaten, boasting some of the tournament’s best defensive records.

Morocco, the more fluid side in the first half, created better chances through Jones El Abdellaoui and Ilias Boumassaoudi, but South African goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe was once again in inspired form.

South Africa, who had grown into the competition after losing their opener to Egypt, showed resilience and patience.

Shakeel April and Mfundo Vilakazi had half chances, but neither side managed to find the net before the break.

The second half opened up with Morocco pushing forward, with Othmane Maamma and Abdelhamid Aït Boudlal coming close.

However, the North Africans were wasteful in front of goal, and South Africa’s high pressing eventually paid dividends.

After Kekana’s wonder goal, South Africa soaked up pressure with commendable discipline.

Morocco threw men forward in search of an equaliser, but South Africa’s backline — led by Tylon Smith and Sfiso Timba — held firm.

South Africa’s victory marks their first-ever youth continental triumph and adds them to a growing list of recent debut winners, following Senegal’s 2023 success.

It also broke their jinx against North African opposition, ending a run of five previous defeats — all by a single goal margin.

Fletcher Lowe ended the tournament with the most saves (24), underlining South Africa’s defensive resolve.

Kekana’s goal was only their ninth of the campaign, but every strike proved crucial as they edged past DR Congo, Nigeria and now Morocco in the knockout rounds.

For Morocco, the defeat marks a missed opportunity to win a second title. They came into the final unbeaten in 14 U-20 AFCON matches in open play.

But Sunday’s loss — their first defeat of the tournament — was a bitter blow.

Despite impressive performances throughout the tournament, their wait for a second crown continues.

  • Nigeria edge Egypt to claim U-20 AFCON bronze

Nigeria edge Egypt to claim U-20 AFCON bronze

Nigeria claimed third place at the 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a dramatic 4-1 penalty shootout victory over tournament hosts Egypt on Sunday.

The third-place playoff at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo ended 1-1 after 90 minutes, before Nigeria kept their nerve in the shootout to secure their fifth bronze medal in U-20 AFCON history.

It was a clash between two sides aiming to finish the tournament on a high after missing out on the final.

Osama Omar put Egypt ahead early in the third minute, but Nigeria equalised shortly after the restart through Bidemi Amole.

With no extra time played in the third-place match, penalties were required, and the Flying Eagles converted all four of their spot-kicks, while Egypt missed two.

Egypt made a dream start, silencing the Nigerian bench just three minutes into the contest.

Osama Omar lashed in a clinical finish from close range after Mahmoud Labib’s cut-back created chaos in the Nigerian box.

Despite conceding early, Nigeria gradually settled, dominating possession and carving out numerous chances.

Clinton Jephta and Precious Benjamin both tested Egyptian goalkeeper Abdel Monem Tamer, while Israel Ayuma’s long-range efforts failed to find the target.

Just two minutes into the second half, Nigeria’s pressure paid off.

A precise through ball from Divine Oliseh found Amole, who kept his composure to slot home the equaliser.

The Flying Eagles pushed for a winner, with substitute Tahir Maigana and Kparobo Arierhi adding energy in attack.

Egypt, however, nearly snatched victory in stoppage time as Mohamed El Sayed struck the bar, and Mohamed Haitham hit the post in a frantic finale.

With the game tied 1-1 after 90 minutes, penalties followed.

Nigeria were flawless from the spot, converting all four attempts through Emmanuel Chukwu, Ayuma, Arierhi and Maigana.

Egypt’s Mohamed Atef and Ahmed Kabaka both saw their efforts saved by 15-year-old Nigerian goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt, who once again showed maturity beyond his years.

The win marked Nigeria’s fifth bronze medal and 14th top-three finish in U-20 AFCON history.

It also continued their impressive record against host nations, beating Egypt for the second straight tournament.

Top African teams gear up for Women’s AFCON 2024 draw

Super Falcons of Nigeria group opponents will emerge on Nov.22, when the draw for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 comes up in Morocco.

Continental football governing body CAF explained that the draw will hold at the Mohammed VI Technical Centre in Sale, Morocco.

The event which will start at 8.00 pm local time (19h00 GMT), will be broadcast live on major broadcast channels across Africa, internationally, and on CAF’s digital streaming platform, CAF TV.

The draw will determine the fate of 13 qualified top African teams, with Nigeria’s Super Falcons eager to reclaim the title, after finishing 4th in the last edition also in Morocco.

To qualify for the upcoming tournament, Nigeria thrashed Cape Verde 7-1 on aggregate to land the ticket.

The 13th edition of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will take place from July 5 to July 26, 2025 in Morocco.

Nigeria has the record of most titles with 11 championship trophy while South Africa are the current champions of the competition having won it on Moroccan soil in 2022.

  • Morocco 2025: Super Eagles, Amavubi arrive Uyo

Morocco 2025: Super Eagles, Amavubi arrive Uyo

Group winners Nigeria and final-day opponents Rwanda on Friday both landed at the Obong Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo ahead of Monday’s Matchday 6 clash.

The encounter scheduled to take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium is the concluding round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.

Deflated but not altogether supine, the Amavubi still have a mathematical chance of qualifying, though the supposition is not actually in their favour.

They missed a big opportunity to enhance their chances after losing at home to Libya’s Mediterranean Knights on Thursday, and can only make it to Morocco 2025 if they defeat Nigeria in Uyo.

The Amavubis would also be hoping that Libya are victorious against Benin Republic’s Cheetahs in North Africa on Monday.

The Super Eagles, confirmed group winners, have nothing to chase other than national pride.

They will play a more relaxed game against the visitors than the turgid contest with the Cheetahs at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan on Thursday night.

Nigeria’s delegation flew from the Ivorian capital, Abidjan, to Uyo aboard a chartered ValueJet aircraft, arriving at 3.50 p.m.

Rwanda’s delegation flew from Kigali to Lagos aboard a regular Rwandair flight, arriving at 1pm, before boarding an Ibom Air flight to Uyo. They landed in Uyo just before 5 p.m.

A carnival atmosphere is expected at Uyo’s magnificent Godswill Akpabio Stadium as the Super Eagles celebrate for 90 minutes and afterwards with the AFCON ticket long in the bag.

Both countries battled to a scoreless draw in their first confrontation in Kigali in September, though the jury is still out on Ademola Lookman’s first-half headed goal that was inexplicably chalked off by the Moroccan referee.

Incidentally, another Moroccan will be in the role of referee on Monday; 44-year-old Samir Guezzaz takes the stage in the centre at the game that kicks off at 5 p.m.

Guezzaz alongside his compatriots Zakaria Brinsi (assistant 1), Abdessamad Abertoune (assistant 2) and Kech Chaf Mustapha (fourth official) are scheduled to arrive in Nigeria on Saturday.

Also expected are Prosper Harrison Addo from Ghana (commissioner) and Ali Mohamed Ahmed from Somalia (referee assessor).

  • AFCON 2025: Shehu Dikko hails Super Eagles qualification

AFCON 2025: Shehu Dikko hails Super Eagles qualification

National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Shehu Dikko, has congratulated the Super Eagles for securing qualification for the 2025 AFCON slated for Morocco.

Dikko said this on Thursday in Abuja shortly after Nigeria booked a place in the continental showpiece courtesy of Libya’s shock 1-0 victory over Rwanda in the other Group D clash.

The NSC boss  said that Nigeria’s qualification with two games to spare reflects the team’s hard work, commitment and talent.

Nigeria’s place in Morocco was sealed after Libya pipped Rwanda, ensuring the Super Eagles’ qualification, even before their match against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic on Thursday evening.

Nigeria now have 10 points, with Benin Republic on 6 points (4 games played by both nations). Rwanda is third with 5 points from 5 games and Libya bottom, with 4 points from 5 games.

BREAKING: Nigeria qualify for AFCON 2025

The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Thursday secured qualification to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to hold in Morocco.

The Super Eagles secured a berth at the continental showpiece with two games to spare, even before they took to the pitch to take on Benin Republic.

This was after Libya snatched a narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali in an earlier Group D encounter, thanks to a late strike by Fahd Saad Mohamed.

The result meant table-toppers Nigeria with 10 points can now finish either as Group winners or runners up, with second placed Benin Republic still up with a chance as well.

A win or a draw for Nigeria against Benin Republic would all but seal top spot for the Super Eagles.

The win for Libya also pushed the Mediterranean Knights up to four points, although they remain at the bottom of Group D, while Rwanda stays in third with five points.

The game was closely contested, with both sides creating chances but struggling to find the back of the net.

Rwanda’s Innocent Nshuti came close on several occasions, but Libyan goalkeeper Bader Hassan stood firm.

As the game approached its last minutes, Mohamed found himself unmarked in the box, receiving a pass from Nour aldin Al Qulaib to slot it past Rwanda’s Thierry Manzi in the 84th minute.

  • Morocco 2025: Super Eagles squad list for Benin, Rwanda released

Morocco 2025: Super Eagles squad list for Benin, Rwanda released

The Super Eagles are set to welcome reigning Africa Player of the Year Victor Osimhen back to the squad for their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda.

Osimhen, who has been in sensational form was ruled out for the home and away AFCON qualifying matches against Libya. This was after he suffered a muscle injury during Galatasaray’s Super Lig clash against Kasımpaşa on Sept. 28.

The Turkish club confirmed that the 25-year-old striker sustained a strain in his upper left posterior muscle group, sidelining him for a few weeks.

A statement by Ademola Olajire, the Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Wednesday,  said Osimhen would make his return, alongside 22 other players for the last two 2025 AFCON Qualifiers.

“Captain William Ekong, Atalanta of Italy’s Ademola Lookman, effervescent winger Moses Simon, Osimhen and 19 other players will seek for six points against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

“The matches are the closing rounds of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign this month.

“Coach Augustine Eguavoen has also called goalkeepers Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye, defenders Calvin Bassey and Bright Osayi-Samuel.

“Others are midfielders Frank Onyeka, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Alhassan Yusuf Abdullahi, and forwards Kelechi Iheanacho, Victor Boniface and Samuel Chukwueze.

“Home-based defender Victor Collins will join up with the group for the first time, and there is a return for gangling forward Sadiq Umar, who plays for Real Sociedad in Spain.

“Defenders Olaoluwa Aina and Bruno Onyemaechi are also listed, while France-based defender Gabriel Osho will hope to play his first competitive game for fatherland.

“This was after his inability to honour a first call-up in the summer due to injury,” Olajire said.

The Super Eagles will fly directly to Abidjan on Nov. 11, for the confrontation with the Cheetahs of Benin Republic at the Stade Felix-Houphouet-Boigny on Nov. 14.

The team would then travel down to Uyo for the final qualifying game against the Amavubi of Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Nov. 18.

Currently top of Group D, the Super Eagles will be certain of a place in the final tournament if they get a point against the Cheetahs, which will earn them 11 points, and with only final-day opponents Rwanda capable of catching up with them on points.

However, with a current tally of seven goals for and none against (following the CAF Disciplinary Board’s award of three points and three goals for the botched Matchday 4 encounter against Libya), the Super Eagles stand head and shoulders above the Amavubi

The Rwandans have one goal deficit and five points in their favour going into the final two matchdays.

  • AFCON: Libya finally opens up, insists “our team was also maltreated”

AFCON: Libya finally opens up, insists “our team was also maltreated”

The Libyan Football Federation (LFF) has reacted to the poor treatment meted out to the Super Eagles by authorities in the country, insisting their team had a similar experience.

The LFF claimed it had no hand in the barbaric act.

“We are deeply concerned about the recent reports surrounding the diversion of the Nigerian national team’s flight ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Libya,”the LFA said in a statement on Monday.

While we regret any inconvenience caused, it is essential to note that such incidents can occur due to routine air traffic control protocols, security checks, or logistical challenges that affect international air travel.

“These are standard procedures at airports worldwide, and delays or rerouting, though unfortunate, are not uncommon.

“We have the utmost respect for our Nigerian counterparts and want to reassure them that the diversion of their flight was not intentional.

There are no grounds to accuse the Libyan security teams or the Libyan Football Federation of deliberately orchestrating this incident. Such actions are inconsistent with our values and principles.

“We firmly reject any claims that suggest foul play or sabotage in this situation.

“It is important to highlight that just last week, our own national team faced significant challenges upon our arrival in Nigeria for the third match of the Africa Cup of Nations qualification.”

Sundry media reports had said that players and officials of the Super Eagles were held hostage at the Al Abaq Airport for several hours following the team’s arrival in the country on Sunday night.

Nigeria vs Benin: Coach Eguavoen optimistic of victory

Meanwhile, Augustine Eguavoen, the Interim Manager of the Super Eagles has expressed optimism of his team’s victory against Benin Republic. Equavoen, who stated this at a news conference on Friday in Uyo, said there was no doubt about the Eagles victory today.

“We are sure of winning, expectations are high, we are at home and there is nothing short of winning. There is no doubt that the Super Eagles will win against Benin Republic,” Eguavoen said.

He said that he was not under  pressure to win the match against Benin Republic.

“I love Nigerians that is why I am here. I didnt lobby for the position I am occupying right now. I didn’t asked for it and I didn’t apply for it, it is an intervention from God. Nigerians gave me the opportunity to be famous through football and any time a chance like this comes, I can’t say no” he said. I am here today just to answer  the call from Nigerians,” he said.

He said the players are  relaxed and in good shape, adding that they are  at home to win and he can’t afford to lose at home. The coach said the team would approach tomorrow’s match with seriousness and do everything possible to come out victorious.

Also speaking, Troost Ekong, the Captain of the team,  said his team would be at an  advantage because the coach is a Nigerian.

“I don’t think where the coach is from will affect us, it is an advantage when we have a coach from Nigeria,” Ekong said.

He said the Super Eagles would win 100 per cent because they are prepared for the match.

“We have a new coach and that is not a big surprise but we need to carry on and we have to be better. We have to go through new campaign and we are not looking back,” Ekong said.

Ekong expressed optimism that Nigeria will win and go ahead to beat Rwanda in Kigali and qualify for Morocco 2025.
