  • BREAKING: Algeria win AFCON 2019

The Desert Foxes of Algeria have won the 2019 African Cup of Nations, AFCON, tournament in Egypt after beaten Senegal 1-0 on Friday.
It was Algeria’s second time of winning the AFCON after 29 years.
Algeria opened scoring through Baghdad Bounedjah on 2nd minute. He tried his luck from the edge of the box and his shot took a deflection and went past the stranded Alfred Gomis.
On 38 minutes, there was a penalty appeal after M’Baye Niang of Senegal went down under a challenge from the defender. All players chase the referee but he was not interested in the penalty claim.
Few seconds later, Niang wasted a big chance draw Senegal level. He unleashed a shot from the edge of the box and it went narrowly over the crossbar.
On 60th minute, Adlene Guedioura of Algeria probably handled the ball and the referee awarded a penalty, but he was called by the Video Assistant Referee, VAR to take a second look.
Referee Neant Alioum came back after watching a replay and quickly reversed his decision to award a penalty after a VAR review.
Niang had chance to draw level for Senegal on 66th minute as he picked up an inch-perfect pass inside the box and fired the ball just over the crossbar.
On 69th minute, a good pass found Youssouf Sabaly on the edge of the box, and he drilled the ball towards the roof of the net. Rais M’Bolhi was almost caught out but pulled off a brilliant save at the last second.
With 68 percent ball possession, Senegal could not dent the Algeria’s defence. The Senegalese also had 11 goal attempts while Algeria had one. While the Algerian keeper saved three clear goals attempt, the Senegalese keeper had no save.

  • Army officer should lead Egyptian football federation, says Former coach

A former Egypt coach called for a military officer to head the Egyptian Football Federation (EFA) after the host nation was knocked out of the African Cup of Nations.
Egypt’s 1-0 loss to South Africa on Saturday led to an immediate purge of Egyptian football officials, taking the gloss off a high-prestige event which Egypt volunteered to host at short notice after Cameroon was stripped of the competition.
“This timing needs discipline that will be found only in the army,” Farouk Gaafar, who led the Pharaohs in 1996-1997, told a talk show on Sunday evening.
Asked by the presenter whether a military official should preside over the football federation, Gafaar said: “Of course”, adding that the country’s soccer administration needed “an iron fist” to be restructured.
“I haven’t seen discipline like in the armed forces,” said Gaafar, who once coached an Egyptian club run by the military.
Analysts say Egypt’s military has been consolidating its expansive role in the country since President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi came to power in 2014.
The then-military chief led the 2013 overthrow of Egypt’s first freely elected president, Mohamed Mursi of the Muslim Brotherhood, after mass protests against his rule.
In May, after a train crash at Cairo’s main station left more than 20 dead, Sisi appointed military General Kamel al-Wazir as transport minister.
A comic (meme) circulated on social media showing Sisi greeting al-Wazir and asking him “Do you know about football coaching?”.
EFA President Hany Abo Rida resigned hours after the South Africa defeat, simultaneously sacking the team’s Mexican coach Javier Aguirre and his assistants. He also called on EFA’s board members to resign and most have done so.
Local media reported that authorities are investigating administrative and financial violations committed by the national football federation.

  • I am proud to play for Super Eagles – Ola Aina

I am proud to play for Super Eagles – Ola Aina

Super Eagles’ defender Ola Aina is happy to star for Nigeria at the ongoing 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The Former England youth international has 10 caps for the three-time winners and 2013 champions and has played in the Eagles two games in Egypt, providing a brilliant back heel assist for Odion Ighalo in the first game against the Swallows of Burundi in Alexandria.

Aina, 22, also talked about missing out of the World Cup in Russia last year and how proud his family is for choosing to play for Nigeria.“It hasn’t been an easy journey after missing out on the World Cup, but I keep working hard and now feel extremely proud to play for Nigeria,” Aina told BBC Sport.

“Obviously, my family is proud and happy for me. It’s not easy to bounce back from tough times but I took a positive outlook at life last summer.

“That transition [switching from England] has to happen, you make decisions in life and live with it.

“Playing in this tournament is ticking something off the international list, I really love playing with this team, and it’s a huge family with an amazing spirit.”

Aina, who started his career with Chelsea but has had stints with Hull City and Torino on loan, is expected to start the Eagles final group B match against the Bareas of Madagascar at the Alexandria Stadium tomorrow.

2019 AFCON: Morocco beat Ivory Coast to advance

Morocco reached the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after beating Ivory Coast 1-0 on Friday to serve notice that they are one of the sides to beat at the tournament in Egypt.

Youssef En-Nesyri’s 23rd-minute goal ensured a second win in Group D for Morocco, who move onto six points and join fellow heavyweights Nigeria, Egypt and Algeria with a 100 per cent record.

The win came after a polished performance by the North African side, one of the pre-tournament favourites but whose only success in the continental championship came 43 years ago.

The goal was brilliantly crafted by Noureddine Amrabat’s mazy run as he eliminated four players, before a short ‘no-look’ pass set up En-Nesyri for a left-footed finish.

  • 2019 AFCON: Five things Super Eagles need to do against Guinea

2019 AFCON: Five things Super Eagles need to do against Guinea

Nigeria’s quest for a fourth African Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy continues in Alexandria, Egypt as the Super Eagles take on Guinea in their second Group B encounter on Wednesday.

The Super Eagles are on top of their group with three points, following a narrow 1-0 victory against tournament debutants Burundi on Saturday.

As 24 teams slug it out in the continent’s most coveted football trophy in its new format, the Super Eagles are definitely one of the favourites to lift the trophy come July 14.

With two of the three countries making their debut in the tournament in Nigeria’s group, it is expected that the Super Eagles make light work of the group stage.

Under the new format, the countries that finish first and second in their group are guaranteed second round slots while the best four of the six third-placed teams also qualify.

The game against Guinea on Wednesday is perhaps the Eagles’ most difficult on paper at the group stage, but in football, anything can happen.

And that much was proven in the 2-2 draw played out by Guinea and Madagascar in the other first round match in the Super Eagles’ group.

As the Super Eagles file out against Guinea on Wednesday with the aim of booking a second round ticket, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) looks at five talking points the coaching crew has to address.

    Captain Mikel Obi’s role

In the game against Burundi, Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi was given an advanced ‘No. 10’ role by Coach Gernot Rohr.

The creative midfielder role is one the former Chelsea player was comfortable with at international level, even when he played in a more defensive position at club level.

However, at 32 years old and making a return to the national team after a stint at England’s second division side Middleborough, the coach should consider a deeper role for Obi against Guinea.

There are even pundits, such as veteran Segun Agbede, who never regard Obi as a number 10.

“Dear Gernot, playing a statuesque Mikel Obi at 10 in @NGSuperEagles, is an exercise in futility. He lacks both the pace and mobility.

“Because he wears the number 10 jersey doesn’t make him a 10.

“Please cease and desist,” Agbede wrote on his Twitter handle.

A younger Obi could have played in that position more comfortably, but Rohr should consider Stock City’s Oghenekaro Etebo for that role while Obi complements Winifred Ndidi in the heart of the midfield.

    Transition between defence and attack

The Super Eagles have always thrived on fast movement, with effective ability to convert defence to attack through the channels.

It was the role Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze were meant to play in the game against Burundi.

However, many football enthusiasts were unpleased with how Chukwueze particularly held on to the ball for too long, thereby denying Paul Onuachu the opportunity to utilize his body against the defence.

Ex-International, Mutiu Adepoju, told NAN after the match against Burundi that transition was an aspect the team should work on before the game against Guinea on Wednesday.

“I commend the boys for a job well done, but going forward I think we need faster transition from defence to midfield and attack.

“We need to have the ability to surprise our opponents and not to be very predictable,” Adepoju said.

    Tactics should depend on opponents

If nothing, the 32nd edition of AFCON in Egypt has so far proved two things:

One, there are no longer minnows in African football and second, to emerge champions, each game should be approached with its own unique tactics.

The game against Burundi is gone and the Super Eagles face a different challenge in Guinea. The technical crew may have to approach Guinea with an entirely different game plan or tweak that from the Burundi game.

    Timely and apt substitutions

So far, Rohr seems to know what substitution to make when he needs to change the game as witnessed in the game against Burundi.

Bitrus Bewarang, the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), commended the coach for knowing how to use his substitutions to change the game.

“After a lacklustre first half by the Eagles’ standard where the Burundians even had two clear-cut chances the game changed in the second half.

“The second half was livelier than the first because the team came out more and the substitutions made by the coach proved vital to Nigeria’s victory.

“Gernot Rohr’s substitutions proved to win the match for Nigeria,” he said.

Of course, Bewarang was referring to the introduction of Ahmed Musa and Idion Ighalo.

If the Super Eagles find themselves in a situation whereby the game against Guinea wasn’t going as planned, timely and apt substitutions should be made.

Ighalo has earned his place in starting lineup

25-year-old Paul Onachu came into the national team based on his exploits with his Danish club FC Midtjylland.

Young, hungry and determined, the striker will definitely have his time with the Super Eagles, but sometimes experience and being in the team for so long have their advantages.

That is exactly the case with Ighalo, whose 77th minute strike made the difference against Burundi.

Nothing motivates a striker more in a tournament like AFCON than to be on the scoring sheet in their opening game.

Against Burundi, the Shanghai Greenland Shenhua striker did just enough to earn a starting role against Guinea on Wednesday.

  • AFCON 2019: `Go get them,’ Buhari tells Super Eagles

President Muhammadu Buhari has charged the Super Eagles to play every match for the honour of their motherland as they file out in their first match against Burundi in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2019), holding in Egypt.

The President, in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, in Abuja on Saturday, urged the Eagles to lift the flag of Nigeria high, and reinforce the reputation of the country as a football powerhouse on the continent.

He said: “I will be watching, just as millions of Nigerians would also do.

“You have our solid support, and we will cheer you to victory,”he said.

He added: “Nigerians are known for their unconquerable spirit. Show this in the group stages, and even beyond. Nothing but lifting of the diadem is good enough for our country,”he stated.

He also enjoined the Super Eagles to be mindful of fair play, and sportsman like conduct, as they strive to return home with the AFCON trophy.

  • AFCON 2019: All set for Africa’s biggest football tournament tonight

AFCON 2019: All set for Africa’s biggest football tournament tonight

The Africa Cup of Nations will kick-off on Friday evening with the much anticipated match between the Egyptian Pharaohs and the Zimbabwe Warriors.

The tournament is historic for several reasons including the fact that 24 teams are participating for the first time, and it is being held in the June/July window rather than January/February.

The opening ceremony of the tournament will be graced by several high profile personalities including FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Nigeria’s legendary musician Femi Kuti.

Femi Kuti, will perform the official song of this year’s AFCON, along with Egypt’s Hakim and Ivory Coast’s Dobet Gnahore.

The official song is titled ‘Metgameen’ which translates as ‘We Are Together’.

The 24 teams at the tournament have been placed in six groups, and they will be playing to get one of 16 slots available for the knockout stages.

The winners and runners-up in each group and the best four third-place teams, qualify for the second round.

Teamwork will make Super Eagles go far – Rohr

Meanwhile, head coach of Nigeria, Gernot Rohr, has revealed that ‘teamwork’ will be his side’s strength at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Egypt.

He also admitted that his team does not have stars like Nigeria legends, Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, or Daniel Amokachi.

Rohr told CAF’s official website: ”I think lot of teams can dream of winning the trophy. We have the experience from the FIFA World Cup but again, we have a young team. We were the youngest at the World Cup and probably, we will still be the youngest at the AFCON.

”We don’t have stars like in the past where Nigeria had the likes of Austin ‘Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, or Daniel Amokachi.

”We have to work with what we have and take a game at a time. I am hoping we can go far with this strategy. We have a young team and teamwork is our strength.”

Rohr’s men will tackle debutant Burundi in their AFCON opener on June 22.

Defending champion yet to touch down

Cameroon players had still not left their hotel in the capital, Yaounde to board a flight to Egypt, because of a pay dispute.

The reigning champions are set to start the tournament on Tuesday in a match against Guinea-Bissau, but the players did not appear for their flight on Thursday evening amid a spat over bonus payments.

“The Lions are still in Yaounde. They did not agree with their managers on the amount of their premiums,” the spokeswoman told Reuters.

Ministry of sports spokesman Gabriel Nloga said the players had each been paid a bonus of 20 million CFA francs ($34,635). A source at Cameroon’s soccer federation said the players had asked for twice that.

Pay disputes before major competitions are not unusual for African soccer federations who often do not have sufficient resources to pay their players high sums. Nigeria and Ghana have experienced similar problems in recent World Cups.

  • AFCON 2019 finally begins in in Egypt

The 2019 African Cup of Nations, AFCON, begins in Egypt on Friday with arrays of African stars, mostly plying their trade in Europe, on display.

The Nations Cup is by far Africa’s biggest showpiece and the dream of any African player. The tournament has produced big guns like Roger Milla, Abedi Pele, Rashidi Yekini, Austin Okocha, Samuel Eto’o, Didier Drogba and a host of others.

With 24 teams taking part in this year’s showpiece, the tournament has been expanded from the 16-team format. This means that 12 teams will qualify from the group stage automatically, with four best losers to make it 16 teams for the Round of 16.

The team for this year’s tournament are: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Cote’D Ivoire, DR Congo, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Namibia, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

Going by FIFA’s latest ranking, Senegal, Tunisia, Nigeria, Morocco, DR Congo, Ghana, Cameroon and Egypt are top favourites to reach the quarter-finals of the showpiece. But there are always surprises in African football as the underdogs can spring surprises.

On paper, host Egypt and Senegal are the favourites as they boast of superstars who just emerged triumphant in Europe in the just-concluded season. Egypt’s Mohamed Salah and Senegal’s Sadio Mane are the biggest stars of this tournament and the two countries have formidable team that can win the tournament.

This is not to write-off the defending champions, Cameroon, a heavyweight in African football. Nobody gave them a chance two years ago when they defeated favourite, Egypt to win the tournament in the final.

Nobody can write-off Nigeria’s Super Eagles. This team, despite not boasting of superstars, have proven over time to rise to the occasion when the chips are down. This team had beaten Cameroon 4-0 during the World Cup qualifiers two years ago at home and drew away with the AFCON’s defending champions. If recent form is anything to go by, the Nigerian team has not been so impressive. They beat Egypt 1-0, drew 0-0 with Zimbabwe and lost 1-0 to Senegal in friendly matches in the build up to the tournament, but despite that, they are no push-over.

South Africa have a team that can go far in the tournament, but not strong enough to win the tournament, the same as Morocco, who recorded a shocking 1-0 loss to Gambia in a friendly match in the build up to the Nations Cup. Tunisia can also spring surprise at the tournament. Second best team in Africa according to FIFA ranking, Tunisia is a compact team and boast of experience players, but how far can they go? With much diligence, it could climb on to the Semi-finals.

Also, Cote D’Voire, a former superpower in African football, is not expected to pull a major breakthrough in this tournament as they have been struggling to keep up with others. The Ivorian team lack depth like when Yaya Toure, Didier Drogba and others were in the team. But you can never write them off, anything can happen.

As for underdogs winning the Nations Cup, that will not happen this year. It has never happened in AFCON that an underdog won the tournament and it is not going to happen in this showpiece.

    Players to watch

The biggest players of the tournament are Salah and Mane. The two players were key to Liverpool’s winning of the Champions League and runner-up in the Premier League. The two players contributed 42 goals to Liverpool’s success in the English Premier League and scored substantial goals in the Champions League. In Nigeria, Odion Ighalo, who plied his trade in China is another player to watch. He was the highest goal scorer in the qualifier, with 8 goals to his kitty. Nigeria’s hope rests on him to rediscover his scoring formula.

However, in the opening match of the tournament on Friday, host Egypt square up with an underdog, Zimbabwe. Egypt is expected to win easily, but Zimbabwe have been impressive in the build up to this tournament, holding the Super Eagles of Nigeria to a goalless draw in Nigeria. However, there is no escape for Zimbabwe today as Egypt is expected to claim a vital three points, especially when buoyed by ferocious fans and home support.
