    AFCON 2023: My role with the Super Eagles – Vincent Enyeama

    Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama has confirmed Nigeria Football Federation  NFF’s, position that he hasn’t been given an appointment to join the Super Eagles coaching bench.

    Recall that Enyeama’s recent post on Social Media, saying he would join the Super Eagles in camp ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.  stirred reactions from football fans who argued that he has been offered an  appointment  by NFF.

    Enyeama’s post reads  “Let’s gooooo. See you in camp. Time for business.”

    However, Enyeama has now confirmed he will only visit Jose Peseiro’s team and his comments were personal.

    “I haven’t been given any appointment by the NFF, neither was there any such discussion. That was only a personal comment, meaning I will visit them in camp when I attend the AFCON.

    “Any opportunity to encourage the lads, I use it,” Enyeama said according to G.O.A.T.

    Tom Saintfiet the head coach of Gambia senior national team has backed the Super Eagles of Nigeria to make a significant  impact at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations starting in Janaury in Ivory Coast.

    The three times champions will be looking to win a fourth AFCON title in Cote d’Ivoire 2023.

    The West African side last won the title in South Africa in 2013.

    Saintfiet, who will lead Gambia to their second appearance at the AFCON after they made their debut in 2021 has backed the Super Eagles to conquer the rest of the continent again.

    ”Everyone knows my passion and love for Nigerian football,” he said on Brila FM.

    “It will be interesting to see how Nigeria will perform because for me they are one of the favourites. It’s been 11 years since (Late) Stephen Keshi won it for them.”

    Nigeria will kick off their campaign against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, January 14 at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium, before the ultimate clash against the hosts at the same venue four days later.

    They conclude their Group C campaign against Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, January 22.

    AFCON 2023: Ghana drop key midfielder, Thomas Partey, unveil 25-man list

    Ghana have dropped midfieder, Thomas Partey for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations starting on January 13 in Cote D’Ivoire.

    The Arsenal midfielder is injured at the moment and he’s expected to remain with the Premier League side to continue his rehabilitation.

    This was confirmed by the head coach of the Black Stars, Chris Houghton.

    Arsenal will treat this injury with caution, and so will the player [Partey].

    “This is a big injury for him, the biggest injury he’s had.

    “From all the information we’ve been given, the timelines of his recovery and the caution that will be taken, [his recovery] will not meet our timelines for the AFCON,” he said.

    Ghana is in Group E alongside Madagascar, Angola and Central Africa Republic.

    AFCON 2023: Equatorial Guinea name Nigerian defender in final squad list

    A player of Nigerian descent, Charles Ondo has named in the Equatorial Guinea final squad heading to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, (AFCON) holding in January.

    Co-incidentally, Equatorial Guinea is one of Nigeria’s opponents in the forthcoming AFCON tournament alongside, host Cote D’Ivoire and Guinea Bissau.

    Nzalang Nacional head coach, Juan Micha Obiang announced his squad for the biennial competition on Sunday.

    Ondo was born in Madrid, Spain, to a Nigerian father and Equatorial Guinean mother.

    The 20-year-old was also eligible to represent Spain and England.

    Ondo was first called up to the Equatorial Guinea national team for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Botswana.

    The left-back made his debut on September 6, 2023.

    AFCON 2023, begins on Janaury 13, with the host nation facing Equatorial Guinea.

    The Federal Government (FG) has reiterated the importance of the Super Eagles of Nigeria winning the 2023 edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

    Minister of Sports Development, Sen. John Owan Enoh made the position of FG known while addressing reporters at the Tunde Idiagbon International Airport, Ilorin, on Saturday.

    Speaking, Enoh disclosed the Super Eagles have the full support of the FG in their quest to win a fourth AFCON title in Cote D’Ivoire in January 2024.

    The re-assurance comes on the heels of the release of a 25-man list by Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, on Friday to prosecute the much anticipated tournament.

    Enoh noted that the presidency was desirous of a triumphant outing for the team and would give all the necessary support in this regard.

    “We are hoping that we are going to make the best out of it. We have the full backing of the president,” he said.

    The minister underscored the pride and honour it would bring to the nation if the Super Eagles could nick a fourth AFCON title, a decade after their last triumph in South Africa.

    He said the ministry was working round the clock with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to ensure meticulous planning and execution for a triumphant tournament.

    “With a resounding desire for success and the unwavering support of the Presidency, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are gearing up to showcase their prowess and determination on the continental stage.

    “The Ministry of Sports Development, in close coordination with the NFF, is dedicated to facilitating an environment conducive to the team’s success,” he explained.

    Recall the NFF recently launched the “Let’s do it again” campaign meant to propel the Super Eagles to its long awaited 4th AFCON title.

    The three-time champions (1980, 1994, 2013) are drawn in Group A, alongside host nation Côte D’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea.

    Hostilities for the 24-nation continental showpiece kick-off from Jan. 13 to Feb. 11, 2024 in six venues across Cote D’Ivoire.

    AFCON 2023: Enyimba celebrates Ojo Olorunleke for making Super Eagles squad

    Enyimba Football club today celebrated the inclusion of its goalkeeper, Ojo Olorunleke in the Super Eagles squad to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

    Ojo was included in Jose Peseiro’s 25-man squad heading to Cote d’Ivoire for the competition.

    He is the only Nigeria Professional Football league player on the squad list.

    “From manning the sticks for the Elephants,” the Nigeria Premier Football League champions wrote on their official X handle.

    “To the biggest stage on the continent with Nigeria Super Eagles for the upcoming TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations.

    “Best wishes Ojo from all of us at Enyimba FC.”

    The Super Eagles will begin preparation for the competition in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on January 2, 2024.

    The team will fly back to Lagos on Tuesday, January 9, and then travel to Abidjan, the Ivorian capital, on Wednesday, January 10.

    The Super Eagles of Nigeria will camp in Abu Dhabi, capital city of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) ahead of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) learnt the Super Eagles will camp in Abu Dhabi for a one-week training camp before the AFCON 2023 kicks off in January 2024 in Côte d’Ivoire.

    According to a statement on Thursday in Abuja by Ademola Olajire, Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the training camp would last until January 9, 2024.

    It added that all the 25 players who made the Super Eagles squad list would depart from their different bases on Tuesday to fly into Abu Dhabi.

    “The team will fly back to Lagos on Jan. 9, and then fly into the Ivorian capital, Abidjan, on Jan. 10,” the statement reads.

    TNG reports three-time champions Nigeria have picked a team of 25 players for their onslaught for a fourth AFCON title.

    The NFF said Head Coach Jose Peseiro settled for usual suspects in a roster that had three goalkeepers, nine defenders, five midfielders and eight forwards.

    “Captain Ahmed Musa returns to the squad after he was left out of the starting games to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series, while South Africa-based goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabili, is picked alongside Francis Uzoho and Olorunleke Ojo.

    “2009 U17 World Cup star, Kenneth Omeruo, (the only other candidate in the team, apart from Musa who was in Nigeria’s 2013 squad that triumphed in South Africa), leads the defenceline.

    “Omeruo is paired alongside William Ekong, as well as Olaoluwa Aina, Oluwasemilogo Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, Zaidu Sanusi, Chidozie Awaziem, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Bruno Onyemaechi.

    “Wilfred Ndidi is also back after missing the World Cup qualifying matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

    “He will be expected to adequately feed the strike-force alongside Alex Iwobi, Raphael Onyedika, Joe Ayodele-Aribo and Frank Onyeka,” it stated.

    The statement also said Musa, Nigeria’s record goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup finals with a brace each in Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018, was in the forward-line alongside Africa Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen.

    It said other forwards included; Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Victor Boniface, Sadiq Umar and Ademola Lookman.

    TNG reports the Super Eagles, in their quest for a fourth continental title, will take on Equatorial Guinea on Jan. 14, 2004, in their first match of Group A.

    This is before further clashes with host nation Cote d’Ivoire (Jan. 18) and Guinea Bissau (Jan. 22).

    Nigeria, who will be participating in the AFCON for the 20th time, were champions as hosts in 1980, triumphant in Tunisia in 1994 and crowned winners in South Africa in 2013.

    When Cote d’Ivoire hosted the finals in 1984, a young Nigerian squad led by the inimitable Stephen Keshi went all the way to the Final.

    They, however, lost to much-experienced Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in a memorable final at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Abidjan.

    The Super Eagles AFCON 2023 squad list has Stanley Nwabili of Chippa United, South Africa; Francis Uzoho of Omonia FC, Cyprus, and Olorunleke Ojo of Enyimba FC as goalkeepers.

    In defending department are Olaoluwa Aina of Nottingham Forest, England; Chidozie Awaziem of Boavista FC, Portugal; Bright Osayi-Samuel of Fenerbahce FC, Turkey; William Troost-Ekong of PAOK Salonika, Greece, and Bruno Onyemaechi of Boavista FC, Portugal.

    AFCON 2023: NFF denies unveiling new Super Eagles jerseys

    Contrary to earlier reports, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has denied unveiling new Super Eagles jerseys as they prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament to be held in Cote d’Ivoire next year.

    Some credible sources had announced that a new Super Eagles jerseys were unveiled by the NFF but the body has now come out to say it’s yet to unveil new Super Eagles Jerseys.

    Images of a supposed jersey unveiled by popular American footwear and apparel company Nike made the rounds across social media in the week.

    Reacting to the trend, the NFF disclosed in a statement via X on Friday which read, “We want to inform the general public that this news is not true.

    “At the moment we have no jersey being launched for the Super Eagles for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to be held in Cote d ívoire next month,” the statement added.

    AFCON 2023 host and one of Nigeria’s opponent Ivory Coast has called up Borussia Dortmund striker Sebastien Haller, Monaco defender Wilfried Singo, and midfielders Ibrahim Sangare of Premier League side Nottingham Forest, Seko Fonfara (Al Nassr) and Franck Kesslie (Al Ahli).

    But missing  on Ivory Coast’s French, manager Jean-Louis  Gasset’s list are Galatasary forward Wilfried Zaha and Beskitas defender Eric Bailly.

    The Ivory Coast are drawn in Group A alongside Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria and Equitorial Guinea.
