“We are ready. We saw who we are going to play with. I think it’s a tough group, but it’s tough for all of them. There is no easy group,” the gaffer told Cafonline.

“If you have qualified for this stage of the competition, you have to prepare. We know who we are facing, and we know how we will prepare for them. There is no other way, we have to prepare well and represent our people well at this tournament.”

BREAKING: Super Eagles beat Libya in AFCON 2025 qualifier

Super Eagles of Nigeria defeat Libya 1-0 in the AFCON 2025 qualifying match at the Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, played the role of a super sub as he scored from a clinical counterattack in the 86th minute to give Nigeria a late win.

The Super Eagles sit top of Group D with seven points.

Before Nigeria scored, the referee had ruled out a goal by Ademola Lookman for offside, a decision some fans at the stadium protested.

The Nigerian team dominated play from the first minute to the last in a game where goals were hard to come by.

Coach Austin Eguavoen opted for a three-man attack led by Victor Boniface, Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon in the absence of injured Victor Osimhen.

Simon replaced Samuel Chukwueze who started in the last two games for the Eagles in the starting line-up against the Libyans.

Stanley Nwabali was retained in goal, with Ola Aina, William Troost-Ekong, Bruno Onyemaechi and Calvin Bassey retaining their positions in the defence.

Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi held it down in the middle of the pack for the three-time African champions.

Nigeria will face the Libyans for the return leg on Tuesday at Benina Martyrs Stadium in Libya.

AFCON 2025: Eguavoen talks about ‘momentum’ as Eagles land in Kigali

Coach Augustine Eguavoen says his squad “is on a momentum” as they prepare for Tuesday’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.

Super Eagles began their campaign in the 2025 AFCON Qualifier on a bright note with a 3-0 thrashing of Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday.

“We have the right mentality now, and the mood in camp is excellent.

“Everyone in camp is eager for us to pick up the three points in Rwanda and stay firmly on top of the qualifying table.

“We are here for business and I am happy that everyone is on the same page.

“I am also happy that we have arrived here in good time, and the players can rest well while we look forward to the official training on Monday afternoon,” he said.

The Nigerian delegation to Tuesday’s match, which departed the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo at 12.48 p.m. on Sunday, landed at the Kigali International Airport at 4.20 p.m.(Nigeria time)

The delegation, which included 23 players and the team’s officials, was led by President of NFF, Ibrahim Gusau.

Others were; NFF 1st Vice President Felix Anyansi-Agwu and a couple of Executive Committee Members, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, a couple of NFF Staff, few stakeholders and few media representatives.

Team captain William Ekong said: “There is nothing much to say other than that we are here for a purpose.

“Our target is the three points, and we have spoken among ourselves on the imperative of going hard for it from the first blast of the referee’s whistle.

“It is going to be a tough game because Rwanda have a good team and got a point from their first match. We must not relent throughout the 90 minutes.”

NAN also reports that the Amavubi of Rwanda forced Libya’s Mediterranean Knights to a 1-1 draw in Tripoli in their own Matchday 1 encounter.

Tuesday’s match will kick off at 3 p.m. Rwanda time (2pm Nigeria time).

  • AFCON 2025: Super Eagles have what it takes to qualify – Eguavoen

AFCON 2025: Super Eagles have what it takes to qualify – Eguavoen

Super Eagles Interim Manager, Austin Eguavoen, says the Super Eagles have all it takes to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled to hold in Morocco.

Nigeria is in Group D alongside Benin Republic, Rwanda and Libya.

Eguavoen who spoke with NFF TV ahead of Saturday’s 2025 AFCON qualifying match against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in Uyo, said he was optimistic that the Super Eagles would scale through.

“Nigeria is a nation, in terms of football, alot of countries respect and the 2025 AFCON Qualifier is no different.

“I am very confident that we will scale through these two games and beyond.

“We have the materials, players, personnel and support. We have everything,” he said.

He said that there was a need to remind the players of their achievement at the last AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire where they finished as runners-up in the tournament.

He also called on Nigerians to rally round the team to ensure it began its campaign on a bright note.

“The only thing we have to remind these players about is that they were almost African champions a few months ago; it’s not even up to a year yet.

“So, what went wrong? It is still the same players. We will do everything we have to do as the technical crew and of course, the federation.

“Nigerians will also rally round them, but they (the players) are the ones whose duty it is to turn the table around.

“I have spoken to them and we will still be having some series of meetings before the game proper and I am very confident that they will go out there and make the nation proud,” he said.

Eguavoen, however, cautioned that it was very important for the Super Eagles to respect every opponent in the qualifier as they were no minnows in football any more.

“We will treat our opponents with utmost respect, no doubt about that, because in football, if you disrespect or look down on any team, then you will have problems.

“So, we will play them with great respect, but this is our home and we have no choice but to ensure we begin our AFCON qualifying campaign with a victory on Saturday,” Eguavoen said.

NAN reports that only three players are still being expected in the camp of the Super Eagles, as 20 players trained in Uyo on Tuesday evening.

Captain William Ekong led from the front, arriving on Monday with the earliest birds, which included defenders Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi and Olisa Ndah.

Midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru as well as forwards Ademola Lookman and Taiwo Awoniyi were also part of the training.

Goalkeeper Amas Obasogie and midfielder Wilfred Ndidi were in town, while forward Victor Boniface and goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali joined in the evening.

On Tuesday morning, defender Calvin Bassey and midfielders Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka pitched in.

This was before defender Benjamin Tanimu (drafted in place of Bright Osayi-Samuel), midfielder Alhassan Yusuf Abdullahi and forwards Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze arrived.

In the evening, just before the team bus pulled out of the hotel for training, defender Bruno Onyemaechi (of Portuguese club Boavista) and midfielder Raphael Onyedika (of Belgian side Club Brugge) arrived in camp.

Forward Kelechi Iheanacho is due in camp on Wednesday, while goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and forward Victor Osimhen are being expected on Thursday.

After Saturday’s encounter, the Super Eagles are scheduled to fly to Kigali on Sunday for Tuesday’s Matchday 2 clash with the Amavubi of Rwanda.

“For the men, we need to make sure that the dates that we’ll be choosing will be in the interests of the players.

“For this, we need to balance different aspects and also discuss with our partners and then we complete [the dates]. Scheduling is a nightmare for everybody,” Mosengo-Omba said.
