U17 AFCON: How Golden Eaglets came from behind twice to beat South Africa

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets are through to the quarter-finals of the ongoing Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Algeria.

Nigeria defeated their South African counterparts 3-2 in a very entertaining game at the Stade Mohamed Hamlouai in Constantine on Saturday.

Nigeria were behind twice in the game with Vicky Mkhawana opening scoring for the South Africans after a corner-kick five minutes into the game.

Thirty minutes later, Charles Agada scored the equaliser via a powerful header to level for Nigeria.

But the South Africans quickly took the lead three minutes into first half added time via Siyabonga Mabena with a great solo effort.

First minute into the second half, Light Eke tapped in to score for his side to bring them back into the game.

It was Abubakar Abdullahi’s finish via a low cross from Emmanuel Michael 25 minutes later that gave Nigeria the lead and the maximum three points in the game.

Nigeria join Morocco in the knockout stage from Group B after two wins from three games.

Under 17 AFCON: Golden Eaglets walk tight rope after losing to Morocco

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets on Wednesday in Constantine lost 0-1 for Morocco to earn all three points and sail into the quarter-finals of the Africa Under-17 Cup of Nations.

The Golden Eaglets wasted a basketful of opportunities in a match they dominated for large periods in the Algerian city.

An own goal by Tochukwu Ogboji as early as the second minute was all the Moroccans, who beat South Africa’s Amajimbo 2-0 on the opening day, needed.

They are now within a step of booking a spot at this year’s FIFA Under-17 World Cup, in spite of having their last group match against Zambia and then the quarter-finals.

As it was in their opening match against Zambia, the Eaglets created chance after chance but pathetically lacked precision in front of goal.

Abubakar Abdullahi should have done better than sending the ball skywards after Emmanuel Michael put him through in the 21st minute.

Team captain Precious Williams also failed to make hay as the North Africans mounted an impregnable rearguard.

Defender Yahaya Lawali, who was again picked as Man-of-the-Match in spite of Nigeria’s loss, shot towards the sky with a through ball in the 69th minute.

Substitutes Light Eke and Adewale Quadri provided the only real tests for the Moroccan goalkeeper in a frantic second period.

The Eaglets will now face South Africa on Saturday, needing victory in order to be assured of qualification to the last eight.

However, failure to win on Saturday may not end it all for them.

A good group phase statistics can help them emerge as one of the two third-place finishers who will join in the quarter-finals.

U17 AFCON: Golden Eaglets beat Zambia 1-0

Two-time champions Nigeria on Sunday picked all three points in a 1-0 win over Zambia to commence their Africa U17 Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign in Algeria on a promising note.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Favour Daniel struck powerfully past the Zambian goal-tender from a goalmouth melee 14 minutes to the end of the game.

The goal gave Nigeria all the honours in a largely average encounter that opened the campaign in Group B.

Nigeria dominated for large swatches of the evening at the Stade Mohamed Hamlaoui.

But ineffective short passes and poor shooting in front of goal denied them an avalanche of goals against a Zambian team that failed to bite.

Both teams hit the woodwork in the first period and Abubakar Abdullahi saw his efforts saved twice as Nigeria piled on the pressure.

The five-time world champions were set to take a two-goal win into their clash with Morocco on Wednesday but substitute Light Eke made light work of a penalty kick awarded two minutes into additional time and gave the goalkeeper no worries.

Nigeria’s defender Yahaya Lawali was named Man of the Match.

Meanwhile, in their encounter, Morocco beat South Africa by 2 goals.

The Nduka Ugbade’s team will face Morocco on Wednesday before meeting South Africa in their final match of Group B on Saturday.

The four top-placed teams at the 12-nation finals will represent Africa at the 2023 FIFA U17 World Cup.

AFCON bid: CAF team inspects Nigeria’s stadia facilities

Inspectors appointed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) are in Nigeria to inspect stadiums and related facilities that Nigeria has put forward in a joint bid with the Benin Republic to host the 35th African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2025.

On the cards for evaluation are the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja; Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo; Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba; Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos; Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City and Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.

The team inspected the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Friday. Saturday saw them at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos while they were at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba and the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin on Sunday.

The inspectors will also check out the Stade Charles de Gaulle, Porto Novo in Benin Republic as part of their rounds for the joint bid between Nigeria and the Benin Republic. Nigeria hosted the biennial event in 1980 and co-hosted with Ghana 23 years ago.

  • Fans unimpressed by Super Eagles 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau

Fans unimpressed by Super Eagles 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau

A cross-section of fans on Monday said they were unimpressed by the Super Eagles 1-0 win over the Wild Dogs of Guinea Bissau.

The Super Eagles claimed their pound of flesh against the Wild Dogs of Guinea Bissau right in front of their own fans with a slim 1-0 win.

The Djurtus of Guinea Bissau had put up a shocking display when they unexpectedly beat the Super Eagles 1-0 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja March 24.

The Super Eagles, however, returned to winning ways in the 2023 African Nations Cup qualifiers with a decisive 29th minute penalty by Moses Simon for the much-needed three points.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), some of the fans said they were yet to be convinced by the performance of the Jose Pesseiro-tutored team, which they described as below average.

A sport journalist, Olusegun Oluesan, contended that the Super Eagles had dropped form and were far away from what the team used to be in the past.

“The Guinean side are not as good as Nigeria made them look during the first leg; the team lacked motivation and fighting spirit, no energy, no urgency in attack and Uzoho looked shaky at some point.

“The final pass accuracy, same as in the first leg, is still lacking. The blunder with crosses by the likes of Simon and chukwueze and poor shots by the likes of Alex Iwobi were discouraging.

“Imagine not scoring in open play over the two legs with the talented players we have. It was really a poor game; the only outstanding payer once again was Bright Osayi Samuel,” he said.

A fan, Dotun Oladosu, told NAN that the Super Eagles team did not look like a team that could perform if they eventually qualified for the AFCON.

“No disrespect, the Super Eagles cannot do anything in AFCON if they eventually qualify. The Super Eagles lack direction and are not playing like a team.

“This team cannot in any way compare with previous Super Eagles teams we have had in the past; imagine that we struggled to beat Guinea Bissau!

“What will happen if we eventually meet countries like Ghana, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt and Senegal when we qualify for the AFCON?

“I am sure our ranking would have dropped drastically after the shambolic display in the two matches played against Guinean Bissau,” he said.

For Sunday Agunbiade, a sports journalist with Fresh FM, the performance of the Super Eagles was a disappointment to the nation.

“Nigerians are disappointed with the performance of the Eagles; maybe not all, but for me, I am disappointed.

“For playing such a game against Guinea Bissau that is just like a local government in Lagos State, maybe Alimosho Local Government, and lacked a bite is a cause for concern.

“With the array of stars in the Super Eagles fold like Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwwueze, Alex Iwobi, Joe Aribo and the likes, we expect a whitewash of the Guineans.

“For Osimhen who has been painting Europe with goals, yet cannot score a single goal over the two-legged qualifiers against the minows Guineans, shows that the team lacked quality,” he said.

He was emphatic that the team did not have cohesion, which he attributed to the ineptitude of the coaching crew.

Football fans in Enugu express mixed feelings over Eagles victory against Guinea Bissau

Some football enthusiasts in Enugu State on Monday also expressed mixed feelings over the Super Eagles defeat of the Guinea Bissau 1-0 at the reverse fixture of the ongoing African Cup of Nations Qualifying.

The Eagles defeated Guinea Bissau 1-0 at the second leg of the qualifier at home after losing the first leg in Abuja with the same margin.

The win pushed the Eagles to the summit of the group A with Nine points and brightened their chances of reaching the AFCON tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

Norbert Okolie, Rangers FC media officer and former Chairman Sports Writer’s Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Enugu, said the win did not come to him as a surprise.

“Like I said last time, the Eagles lost with the same margin in Abuja, I know the team will fly with good preparation.

“To a large extent, it has strengthened the chances of the team in qualifying to the AFCON tournament.

“My advice to the coaches, players and NFF, we have to take into cognisance that there are no more small teams in the football World.

“They have to be up and doing every time, invite players at the right time and in good condition for the players to deliver,” he said.

Ignatius Okpara, former SWAN Secretary in Enugu, however, said the present Super Eagles as constituted, was not a team that could deliver the needed result for the country.

According to him, that the team defeated Guinea Bissau 1-0 is not something we should be celebrating, because it was a narrow escape.

“From the performance of the boys, it’s obvious that they will not go far in the continental soccer competition when the time comes.

“None of the departments are fantastic, the strikers do not have enough needed bite to kiss their opponent net and they are over relying on Victor Oshimen.

“Nigeria should intensify effort in engaging a sound Technical Adviser because this present coach, José Peseiro, has nothing to offer.

“There are many sound coaches out there and Nigeria needed a good coach that can scout for good players from our Nigeria Premier Fooabll League (NPFL) to give the team much bite,” he said.

Blaise Ude, Enugu Boxing coach, said that Nigerians loved football and that the team needed to do well all the time to justify the government preferential treatment to the game.

“As for me, the current Super Eagles are not up and doing in terms of results and play and that is why I refused to watch them since the begining of the qualifying,” Ude said.

Moses Simon scored from penalty spots to give the Super Eagles victory at Estadio 24 De Setembro, Bissau.

  • NFF fumes after Super Eagles’s loss to Guinea Bissau

NFF fumes after Super Eagles’s loss to Guinea Bissau

President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, on Saturday in Abuja read the riot act to national team players in view of dwindling performances in recent times.

Gusau told Super Eagles players that visible total commitment would now be a key factor, apart from competence and current form, for selection for the national team at any level.

The senior men’s national team had on Friday in Abuja lost 0-1 to Guinea Bissau in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

The defeat at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium pushed the Eagles down to second place in their qualification group.

“Let us be very clear about one thing: no player will ever be encouraged against his wish to wear Nigeria’s colours at any time.

“If an invitation is extended to you at any time but you are not physically, psychologically or mentally up to it, you are free to decline.

“Nigeria demands good performances and positive results from any of the teams going forward,” the NFF President said.

He expressed his disappointment at the team’s performance and demanded an immediate reaction.

”I was sorely disappointed by your performance against Guinea Bissau and I know that Nigerians at home and in the diaspora are more than disappointed.

“Things must change, starting with the return match in Guinea Bissau on Monday. Our country is too big to be getting these poor results at international level,” Gusau said.

He recalled that the under-23 male team, the Olympic Eagles, also failed to score against Guinea in a 2023 Africa Under-23 Cup of Nations qualifier at the same venue on Wednesday.

“This message is for all the teams, down to the under-15 male side known as Future Eagles.

“Total commitment which we can see in your body language and output will now be a key factor in who wears Nigeria’s jerseys.

“If some players are not ready to give their all at a particular time, others will be and will deliver for our country,” the NFF President stated.

Responding on behalf of his group, team captain Ahmed Musa, apologised to the NFF and Nigerians for the defeat.

He assured that the players were ready to redeem themselves in the return match on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria delegation to Monday’s match in Bissau will depart from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja at 7 a.m. on Sunday aboard a chartered flight.

The match comes up at the Estadio 24 de Setembro from 5 p.m. Guinea Bissau time (6 p.m. Nigeria time) on Monday.

Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen has arrived at the team’s camp in Abuja ahead of Friday’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against the Djurtus (Wild Dogs) of Guinea Bissau.

The match is scheduled to take place at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, in Abuja.

Eagles Media Officer, Babafemi Raji in a chat disclosed that Osimhen, who had a flight delay in Lagos, joined the team in Abuja after Tuesday’s evening training.

Raji said that the arrival of Osimhen brought the number of players in camp to 22, while Portugal-based defender Zaidu Sanusi was the only player still being expected and should be joining the team on Wednesday.

    Senegal lift Under-20 AFCON trophy

The Young Teranga Lions of Senegal on Saturday at the Cairo International Stadium, Egypt, defeated their Gambia counterparts 2-0 to lift their first-ever Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy.

Goals from forward Sulaymane Faye and midfielder Mamadou Camara were all the team needed to secure Senegal’s victory over their Gambian neighbours.

The Senegalese side zoomed into Saturday’s final with a 100 per cent record, winning all their matches without conceding a goal.

The Young Teranga Lions were playing their fourth Under-20 AFCON final, having finished runners-up in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Malick Daf’s tutored side have followed in the footsteps of the senior Teranga Lions, the Beach Soccer national team and the home-based national team in winning continental glory over the last year.

The Young Teranga Lions started better at the Cairo International Stadium with their direct approach causing the Young Scorpions problems at the back.

The Young Teranga Lions broke the deadlock after six minutes through Sulaymane Faye’s header from a cross down the right channel.

The Gambian defence failed to deal with Pape Diallo’s cross which allowed Faye to head into an unguarded goal.

The Young Scorpions came from the break seeking to get back into the match but were unable to break the defence of the Senegalese.

Senegal doubled their lead 10 minutes after the restart through midfielder Mamadou Camara who guided home a corner to beat the helpless Pa Ebou Dampha.

The Young Teranga Lions dominated possession in the opening exchanges of the second period with Lamine Camara and Mamadou Camara pulling the strings for Malick Daf’s side.

The Gambia coach Abdoulie Bojang made a double substitution bringing in Mansour Mbye and Muhamed Sawaneh for Bailo Bah and Modou Marong and the change added more firepower to the ineffective Young Scorpions attack.

Senegal captain Samba Diallo twice came close to extending their lead and substitute Mouhamed Gueye even hit the Young Scorpions’ post with a ferocious effort in stoppage time.

The Senegalese held unto their goals which eventually saw them through to their first ever title at this category.

It would be recalled that the Flying Eagles thrashed The Young Carthage of Tunisia 4-0 to win the third place match.

The four semi-finalists are to represent Africa at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup scheduled to hold in Indonesia between May 20 and June 11.

U20 AFCON: Nigeria beat Tunisia to win bronze medal

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles on Friday in Egypt finished third at the ongoing Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a 4-0 thumping of the Young Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.

The third-place playoff at the Cairo International Stadium saw the Nigerian side going ahead in the 9th minute through Ibrahim Muhammad.

Ahmed Abdullahi doubled the lead a minute after the half-time break, before Jude Sunday grabbed a brace in the 48th and 90th minutes to clearly establish Nigeria’s superiority in the game.

Sunday’s first goal was a fantastic solo effort and his second was scored with a fierce drive from the edge of the box in stoppage time.

The Tunisian team had a better ball possession rating of 54 per cent against the 46 per cent recorded by Nigeria’s Flying Eagles but it was not enough to make any difference.

Nigeria and Tunisia, alongside finalists Senegal and The Gambia, will represent Africa at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup scheduled to be hosted by Indonesia from May 20 to June 11.

Senegal will take on The Gambia in the final match of the competition on Saturday at the Cairo International Stadium.

  • U-20 AFCON: Nigeria beat Mozambique to reach quarter-finals

U-20 AFCON: Nigeria beat Mozambique to reach quarter-finals

The Flying Eagles beat Mozambique 2-0 in Ismailia on Saturday to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Nigerian under-20 male side scored two sumptuous goals in the first-half through Samson Lawal and Ibrahim Muhammad to secure second place in Group A.

The record seven-time champions of the competition thus moved to six points while Senegal top the group with nine points following their 4-0 thumping of hosts Egypt in Cairo.

The Nigerians dominated possession at Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia and it came as no surprise when they sealed the comfortable victory at full-time.

Muhammad tested the Mozambican goalkeeper with a speculative shot from distance after five minutes to demonstrate the intentions of the Flying Eagles.

Kimiss Zavala was well positioned to gather the effort as the Young Os Mambas weathered the early Flying Eagles’ pressure.

They continued to pile pressure on Mozambique with Haliru Sarki and Muhammad providing width to the Nigerian attack.

The Nigerians created half-chances through Sarki whose half-volley came off a Mozambican defender after 20 minutes.

Zavala also pulled a smart one-handed save to deny Ayuba Abubakarr from giving the Flying Eagles the lead.

Also, the lively Muhammad played in Abubakarr who controlled the ball with his back to goal before firing straight at Zavala who made himself big.

Nigeria broke the deadlock through Lawal after 32 minutes with a stupendous strike from distance to beat the helpless Zavala.

The forward latched on to a quick interchange of passes between full-back Augustine Njoku and Sarki before beating Zavala with a powerful strike.

The Flying Eagles doubled their lead four minutes before half-time through Muhammad’s sumptuous strike from outside the area.

Muhammad Aminu cut in from the left to release the Cartagena FC striker who had a touch to set himself up before beating Zavala to make it 2-0.

The second half was an even contest with Mozambique playing on the break while Nigeria rang changes to give playing time to other members of the squad.

Substitute Jude Sunday saw his ferocious effort turned over by the busy Zavala 10 minutes into the second half.

Another Nigerian substitute, Olamilekan Adams, forced a save from Zavala as Ladan Bosso’s charges pushed more men forward.

The Young Os Mambas’ only real opportunity came late on through substitute Jose Rabelina Zavala close range effort.

The Flying Eagles join Senegal in the quarter-finals of the competition, while Egypt and Mozambique crash out.
