Court lifts FIFA’s suspension as Gueye returns to AFCON

The Court of Arbitration for Sport, also known as CAS, has decided to suspend the decision of FIFA concerning Pape Gueye.

The OM midfielder was subject to investigation after agreeing personal terms with Watford over a move, before pulling the plug on the deal and eventually joining Marseille in the summer of 2020.

The world football governing body, FIFA, decided to ban the player whilst they investigated the strange scenario regarding his transfer. This meant that he would be ineligible for the current Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Since then, CAS have got involved and overruled the decision, meaning that Gueye is now eligible to compete for Senegal at AFCON.

Aubameyang leaves AFCON, sent back to Arsenal

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been sent back to Arsenal by Gabon for medical examinations after he was diagnosed with heart lesions, according to Sky Sports.

Aubameyang, who was banished from the Gunners first team by Manager, Mikel Arteta had left London earlier for the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON in Cameroon.

The former Borussia Dortmund striker contracted COVID-19 recently but has since returned to training and felt healthy.

The Gunners said last week that they had been in touch with the player and are confident his condition is not serious.

However, the player did not play any part in Gabon’s match against Ghana due to a minor heart condition.

Sky Sports reports that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) “did not want to take any risks” after Aubameyang and teammates, Mario Lemina and Axel Meye were shown to have “cardiac lesions” following bouts of COVID-19

  • AFCON: Why Chukwueze is yet to impress – Udeze

AFCON: Why Chukwueze is yet to impress – Udeze

Former Super Eagles player, Ifeanyi Udeze has said winger, Samuel Chukwueze was yet to impress at the ongoing 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Udeze made this known even after Chukwueze netted the first goal in the second Group D fixture the Super Eagles played against Sudan.

The Villareal skipper netted the goal against Sudan in the 3rd minute of the game, with the Super Eagles going on to win the game 3:1.

Although Chukwueze’s goal against Sudan is the fastest goal of the tournament so far, Udeze believes that the winger was yet to hit his best form.

Recall that Chukwueze suffered a serious injury in last season’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Arsenal.

However, he recovered in time to be named in the Super Eagles’ 28-man squad for the AFCON being held in Cameroon.

In the first game against Egypt Chukwueze did not impress and had to be replaced in the second half.

In the game against Sudan, he was replaced by Alex Iwobi before the start of the second half.

Udeze explained why the Villarreal winger is yet to fully impress.

“Chukwueze is not yet in form, remember he was out with injury. But by the time he gets back to form we will see the best of him. I just pray he hits form in time,” Udeze said on Brila FM.

The Super Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday against Guinea-Bissau, who need a win to stand a chance to qualify for the round of 16.

AFCON 2021: One thing Super Eagles lack – Julius Aghahowa

Former Super Eagles striker, Julius Aghahowa, has pinpointed that the Nigerian national team lack creativity after their first two games at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon

Nigeria defeated Egypt 1-0 in their first AFCON game last Tuesday.

Augustine Eguavoen’s men also defeated Sudan 3-1 in their second AFCON tie on Saturday.

Speaking to Channels TV, Aghahowa said: “The fact is the Super Eagles played exciting football, a lot of possession though in the opponents half we didn’t get that creativity that we wanted all in all two games six points we are good to go.

“I think this is a walk in the park. The last game is just for us to play those players that have not had game time.”

Nigeria’s next AFCON match is against Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday.

  • AFCON: Why I haven’t played some Super Eagles players – Eguavoen

AFCON: Why I haven’t played some Super Eagles players – Eguavoen

Super Eagles coach, Austin Eguavoen has revealed why he has not fielded some of the players in the Super Eagles squad for the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have played two matches so far, securing wins against two North African sides, a 1-0 defeat of Egypt and 3-1 thumping of Sudan on Saturday.

And having secured a place in the round of 16, Eguavoen hinted at providing the opportunity for some fringe players in his squad to play.

The 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner explained that he deliberately left some of the players out of the first two games because he wanted to avoid taking risks.

He also pointed out that some players were new to the squad while others, such as fullbacks, Tyronne Ebuehi and Jamilu Collins, arrived late to camp.

Addressing reporters after the Super Eagles’ win over Sudan, Eguavoen was asked if he intends to make changes to the starting lineup.

“You are already giving a lineup which is good. I have been long enough with this team, as a technical director from afar but this is the closest I have been with this team, which is about three weeks now,” he said.

“We actually started with quite a number of players, to be precise 24 on the fourth of January and on the fifth we flew out.

“On arrival here, nothing happened because we retired to bed at about 2 am and then preparation started on the sixth, and on the 11th we are to be on the field, so that was why when you see the lineup in this first two games it’s a little bit difficult to take risks.

“It’s better to play with people that know themselves so that was why we maintained what we had up to this point in time.

“We made it clear to all the players that everybody that has come here has a chance to play.

“Now coming to the next game with qualification secured, with a win on our mind as well I think we’ll give a couple of players the opportunity to play “

AFCON: Eguavoen warns Super Eagles against complacency

Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen has warned his players against complacency and taking their chances in front of goal in subsequent matches of the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.

The coach said this at a press conference after Nigeria booked a spot in the second round with a comfortable 3-1 win over their hapless Sudanese counterpart.

Eguavoen however said the team did not play at the same high tempo, especially in the second half and that gave the Sudanese the comeback for the consoletry goal.

“No game comes easy, We knew it was going to be tough and tried as much as possible to be ready for any opponent that comes our way.

“So it’s a little bit difficult to say whether we were complacent in the Sudan game or not but we will discuss this with the boys going forward,” he said.

The coach also stressed on the need for the team to always take their chances in front of goal and defend as a unit to avoid unnecessary pressure and conceding cheap goals.

“I think we are strong enough with our bench but sometimes scoring goals is abit of problem, we waste chances in front of goal.

”Against Egypt we missed a couple of seaters, against Sudan also, so that was what gave the Sudanese hope that they can survive, it’s a threat, so we need to work on this,” he said.

The coach however assured of making some changes in the final group match against Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday, so as to give players who have not tested action some game time.

“Obviously, we will make changes for the last group game against Guinea-Bissau.

“We have depth in the team and it’s a good opportunity for the other players to play, we will play to win the game and I trust the players to do a great job,” he added.

Nigeria currently top group D with six points from their opening two games, after beating Egypt and Sudan.

Egypt are second with three points, while Sudan and Guinea-Bissau have one point each.

The Super Eagles will take on Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday in their last group match.

  • AFCON: What Super Eagles players said after thrashing Sudan

AFCON: What Super Eagles players said after thrashing Sudan

Players of the Super Eagles have expressed joy over their victory against Sudan, noting however, that there is still more work ahead.

The Eagles are billed to face Guinea Bissau in their final group game on Jan. 19.

The Eagles beat their Sudanese counterparts 3-1 in a Group D clash at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to advance to the knockout phase of the competition.

A cross-section of the players, who spoke after the team’s victory said the team gave a good account of themselves, adding however, that there was still more work to be done.

Eagles Captain William Troost-Ekong said that the team deserved their victory over their Sudanese counterparts, noting that they still want to go ahead and win their last group game.

“I think today was a different challenge again. Just like in our first game, the first half I thought we were a little bit slow but in the second half we came out well.

“We are still a good side, even when we don’t perform well just like in the first game. We still managed to score goals and I think we deserve to win this game.

“All in all, we have six point most importantly and through to the next round but we surely want to win our last game,” he said.

On the Eagles conceding a penalty, Ekong noted that the team was still playing well at the time but was unlucky to have conceded the penalty.

“Aina put a wrong step in the player’s foot in the box and sometimes with VAR you are going to have this decisions and I think we played better in the second half than in the first,” he said.

Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi said: “So far it’s been good and we have six points now, which is very important and we look forward to the next game.

“There’s always room for improvement and we don’t think this is our best yet but we know that we will keep improving with each game as we move to the next round.

“So, there are still more games to come and we will see what happens.

“Our expectation now is to try and win our final group game as much as we know that we have qualified but we try to take every game as the finals,” he said.

Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye said he was happy with the win, pointing out, however, that it would have been even sweeter if the team had kept a clean sheet.

“When I realised that it was a penalty, I guess all I wanted to do was to save the penalty for the team but it didn’t happen.

“It would have been sweeter if we had conceded no goal but the most important thing is that we qualified for our country, our families and now we keep on going.

“We now have to be fully focused and give our best in our final group game because there are some teams or country, so we have to do everything to get another three points,” he said.

Union Berlin forward Taiwo Owoniyi on his part said it was a sweet victory, insisting that the team still had a long way to go.

“It was a sweet victory and we are very happy that we were able to make our country, our families as well as all Nigerians proud.

“We still have a long way to go in the competition although and I think the style of our coach in giving the boys more freedom to express themselves in the field of play is really working for the team.”

The Super Eagles will next take on Guinea Bissau in their final group game on Wednesday at the Stade Roumdé Adjia in Garoua, Cameroon.

  • AFCON 2021: The Shame and the Pride!

AFCON 2021: The Shame and the Pride!

    By Segun Odegbami

    The Shame
……. FIFA President, Giovani Infantino, led a campaign to have AFCON 2021 cancelled. His reason was untenable and pure balderdash!

Can you believe that some national football federation presidents in Africa were part of the plot, behind the scenes, to have the Championship cancelled for no reason at all beyond obeying their ‘master’s’ bidding?

The success of the first week of AFCON 2021 must have been a big disappointment to them.

…it is a great shock and shame to learn of their clandestine role…… forgetting that Europe successfully hosted their own championship even at a worse time when Covid-19 was ravaging the region.

Why should Africa’s be treated differently now?

The names of all the presidents that backed that anti-African move should be made public, and every one of them made to face the music…….

    The Pride
…… the campaigners could have succeeded but for the divinely inspired emergence of a powerful and ‘unpolluted’ figure, Eto Samuel Fils, as President of Cameroon’s national football federation.

He was not going to be a part of any shenanigans during his first assignment as President and host of Africa’s greatest football championship.

    What did he do?

It was a thing of immense pride also to watch the spectacle of the opening ceremony of AFCON… the displays on the field of play…of African flair, spectacle, power and athleticism in full display.

So far, two countries have stood out for me in the championship….my prediction is that the two.. are likely to get to the finish line.

AFCON: Ghana’s player banned for throwing punch at opponent

Ghana striker Benjamin Tetteh will serve a three-match suspension after punching an opponent during a mass brawl following Friday’s 1-1 draw with Gabon at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Tensions boiled over as Ghana were enraged by a late equaliser that Gabon scored after opting not to return the ball when the Black Stars put it out of play after their midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh went down injured.

After a shoving match broke out on the pitch at full-time, Tetteh took a swing at Gabon’s Aaron Boupendza and was later shown a red card by the referee.

CAF on Saturday said it had decided to suspend Tetteh for one additional match on top of his automatic two-game ban.

He will miss Ghana’s must-win clash against Comoros on Tuesday. Ghana are third in Group C with just one point from two games.

Mali lost their appeal over El Bilal Toure’s dismissal in the controversial 1-0 win over Tunisia.

The Reims forward was sent off in the closing stages of a game marred by controversy when the referee blew the final whistle before the 90 minutes had been played.
