Court strikes out case against AGN president, Emeka Rollas

The Federal High Court, Umuahia Judicial Division, on Thursday struck out the widely publicised suit filed by some aggrieved individuals led by one David Amalaha, challenging the legitimacy of Dr. Ejezie Emeka Rollas as the National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).

In its ruling, the Court held that the plaintiff lacked the locus standi to initiate the case, describing him as a “busybody.”

The judgment reaffirms the legal standing of Dr. Rollas’ administration and effectively puts to rest questions over his leadership of the Guild.

Reacting to the verdict, Dr. Ejezie Emeka Rollas, MON, expressed satisfaction, saying:  “This judgment vindicates me and confirms what we have always known – that the claims by David Amalaha and his cohorts were nothing but an attempt to tarnish the image of the Guild. I remain focused on strengthening the Guild and will not be distracted by baseless allegations.”

In line with disciplinary measures already taken, the leadership of the Guild suspended some individuals  from the Guild, as  recommended by the National Disciplinary Committee due to their roles in fomenting unrest within the Abia State chapter.

Their names includes:Amalaha David Onyebuchi (David A); Gideon Victor Philemon; Nwoko Nathaniel Udochika Chike Okezie; Anthony Chukwuma; Amanze Bright Chimezie and Onyekwere Chukwuemeka Solomon.

The head of the AGN legal team, Prof. Hagler Okorie, reaffirmed that the suit was “frivolous and dead on arrival,” emphasising that it was an unnecessary distraction

It will be recalled that these same individuals had earlier lost another case in a judgment delivered on October 3, 2024, by Hon. Justice C. Chido Nwakanma, who ruled against their illegal declaration of themselves as state executives of the Guild without due process or elections.

Dr. Rollas concluded by warning the general public not to conduct any AGN-related business with the aforementioned individuals, as they are no longer recognised members of the Guild.

AGN slams indefinite suspension on popular actress Shirley Igwe over on-set assault

The national leadership of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has placed Nollywood actress and producer Shirley Igwe on indefinite suspension following allegations of violence and misconduct on a film set.

TheNewsGuru reports that Igwe physically assaulted a crew member during a heated altercation on a movie location in Lagos, which escalated to her slapping the individual.

The Chief of Staff to the AGN National President, Ifeoma Okeke, in a statement on Monday, disclosed that the Guild strongly condemned Igwe’s actions, describing them as unprofessional and contrary to the ethical standards expected of members of the acting community.

Following our preliminary investigation into the allegation of violence leveled against actress Shirley Igwe on a film set in Lagos, the National Executive Council has resolved to place her on an indefinite suspension,” the statement read in part.

The AGN emphasised that the decision was based on Igwe’s “unprofessional misconduct, violence, and indiscipline, actions capable of bringing the profession to disrepute.”

The Guild further directed all its members to desist from participating in any film production involving Shirley Igwe until further notice.

Additionally, the AGN has called on Igwe to tender a public apology to the assaulted crew member.

Actors Guild debunks arrest of National President, Emeka Rollas

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has debunked a viral report that  its National President, Emeka Rollas was arrested and detained by the police in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

Recall that the online report said Rollas was arrested over the weekend for alleged role in imposition of an unelected chairman on the Abia State chapter of the guild.

However, in a statement issued by Cornel Udofia AGN’s Presidential Spokesman, the guild flayed at the reported arrest, describing it as malicious, and unfounded.

According to him, it was the National President who went to the make complain at the police station, adding that the report is a figment of imagination of the writer.

“Our attention has been drawn to news making the rounds in local Abia blogs claiming that the AGN National President Dr Ejezie Emeka Rollas ,MON was arrested and detained by the police in Umuahia.

“Ordinarily these blogs do not deserve this refutal but for the benefit of teeming supporters of our National President who has been doing a great job and for the records.

“Since 2024 a set of disgruntled elements, led by one David Amalaha,  hijacked the Abia AGN by conducting an illegal and kangaroo election without the consent of the National body as enshrined in the AGN constitution.

“As a result, the Guild in Abia has been led by different Interim government pending when the matter in court would have been over.

“Recently Mr Emmanuel Ehumadu aka Labista was appointed as the new Interim Chairman of the Abia State Chapter, on January 9th 2025 was his first meeting,” he said.

The statement explained that the National President was around in the State following the death of his mother In-Law, so he  decided to attend  the state chapter  meeting to encourage participation of all members.

“After his speech, somebody among the crowd raised up his hands to speak and he was given audience only for him to begin to rain abuses to the national body, issuing threats.

“The national president, at that point, sent a distress call to the AIG zone 9 who intervened and the boys were invited to the police for questioning and the meeting continued.

“At the end of the meeting the National President went to the zone 9 Umuahia and made an official entry of threat to life.”

AGN place Akpabio’s alleged ‘side chicks’ on watchlist

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has placed on watchlist several Nollywood actresses fingered to have had romantic relationships with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In July, TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that an Instagram blog alleged that Dakore Egbuson-Akande, Nancy Isime, and Ini Edo were involved in affairs with Akpabio, but the senate president denied the allegations.

In a memo captioned INDEFINITE SUSPENSION- HALIMA ABUBAKAR on Friday, the AGN confirmed that the actresses are on its “watchlist” and are being “investigated” by its secret panel.

The memo reads in part, “On behalf of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, I commend the professional and incisive work done by members of the secret investigative panel.

“However, some female members on the watchlist are being investigated by the secret panel, especially in the recent release of names purported to have had dealings with the Senate President.”

TNG understands that AGN also announced the suspension of popular actress Halima Abubakar for “news of extramarital affairs linked with highly placed individuals in society and Nollywood stars”.

The AGN said a two-year-long investigation uncovered Halima’s “involvement in slandering the film industry”.

It added that the actress will face the national disciplinary committee to determine her full punishment.

  • EXCLUSIVE: AGN President reveals what movie stars can do to protect themselves against death hovering over Nollywood

EXCLUSIVE: AGN President reveals what movie stars can do to protect themselves against death hovering over Nollywood

Emeka Rollas, the leader and current president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), have admonished movie stars in the industry to take utmost care of their health to avoid debilitating health issues that may lead to an unforeseen health crisis.

During an Interview with TheNewsGuru.com (TNG), the AGN president appealed to members to create time out of their hectic schedules to exercise and go for medical checks, emphasizing that balancing one’s health is a paramount decision in their career.

“Every actor/ actress should take care of their health. Make it a paramount decision in their career. For everything an actor does, they must create time for exercises and regular medical check-ups. Sometimes, some of these actors work back to back and drain themselves mentally and physically. It would help if they take time to check themselves, rest and come back to avoid strange illness,’‘ he said.

Rollas also noted the numerous deaths in Nollywood are a result of sheer providence, listing various measures the association had to take, in order to, curtain the death rate in the industry.

“The movie industry is in the public domain, meaning people tend to hear about it when something happens. This does not mean that it is only in the movie industry that people are dying,” he said.

“You must have heard how we have lost people in the National Assembly repeatedly; nobody will go and say okay because people are dying in the National Assembly, it is probably because of how bad the place is; this is sheer providence; basically, we try to do our best to curtain some of these things just in case they come directly from health issues.

“This is why the guild put forward platforms to help the association’s members. Suppose you are a member of the actor guild and have signed up for the health management organizations’ platforms. In that case, you are entitled to about six hundred hospitals across Nigeria where you can know the state of your health before it begins to get to the stage where it may lead to death.

“And in the guild, each member already qualifies to have an insurance policy to help you incase of an accident, while you are in a shoot or, in extrame cases, sudden deaths. We also organize rallies or awareness campaigns to inform members of these programs.

The union president stressed that the four-day prayer and fasting session held earlier in this year over the recent deaths in Nollywood was to avert similar occurrences in the future, adding that prayers were imperative, as some of the circumstances that led to the death of deceased movie stars may have spiritual undertone.

He said, ”The actor guild organized a three days program against death in the industry, in case these things vie any spiritual circumstances. We also had to guard against that. We had this program for three days and ended it on the 7th of May with pastor Jerry Eze in Abuja.”

“Every human being is forced to face spiritual attack in one way or the other; what I did was just in case any actor or actress falls in the catergory of being chased. It was also a way of encouraging these entertainers to seek their God, which is normal, ” the president replied, when asked if the need to seek spiritual help in tackling the deaths in Nollywood came from a place of fear that the industry is under attack.

Rollas disclosed the role of movie producers in ensuring movie stars take care of their health, saying, “Anything you want to do, the way the movie industry is fashioned, you can not force the producers to be the ones that will pay for the health benefits for the actors. Instead, we are in a negotiating process between an employer and an employee, and in due course some of those things will be sorted out.”

To create awareness about the health programs movie entertainers can participate in, the AGN president stressed that “The Actor Guild of Nigeria is currently in thirty-four states in Nigeria. Each state has its chairman and WhatsApp platforms where actors and actresses interact, and broadcasts about these health programs are shared.”

TNG understands that the entertainment industry in the past few months has witnessed several deaths in the movie-making sector. While the majority passed away due to illness, two died in their sleep, and one was involved in an accident, throwing the movie industry into deep shock.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria, (AGN) has revealed that went under the knife twice for a brain surgery, emphasizing that the two surgeries were successful.

Emeka Rollas the national President of AGN who made the revelation known added that the actor is in very good condition.

Rollas said that Zack needed to be flown abroad for a post-surgery evaluation, expressing his disappointment at those who spread false information about Zack’s death.

“Because of the internet age, people just want to grow their page and they can spill nonsense, that was why somebody woke up yesterday morning and said Zack has passed on and I quickly reacted.

“Zack is never in a position of seriously needing attention as we speak, if not because of privacy I would have just connected him on the phone here, you will see him.

“He just needs a post-surgery evaluation abroad which we are gradually gathering money to send him abroad for that.

“He has survived two brain surgeries, he is in good health, and he is speaking. For somebody to wake up and say that Zack has passed on, is inhuman,” he said.

It would be recalled  that on Thursday, rumours broke out that the actor had died but Emeka Rollas swiftly debunked the claims.

Zack Orji had slumped on December 31, 2023, and was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit of the National Hospital in Abuja, before he was transferred to a private hospital for surgery.

AGN opens up on Amaechi Muonagor’s demise

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) Enugu Chapter on Monday described  the death of veteran Nollywood actor, Amechi Muonagor, 62, as unfortunate.

Chairman of AGN, Enugu Chapter, Ene Brown, who said this in Enugu, noted the deceased battled with different ailments for a very long time.

“His sickness became worse in 2024 with stroke, diabetics and kidney failure.

“Mounago battled with diabetes for over 10 years and has been managing it. It was only these past six months that he started appealing to the public for assistance.

“Just like John Okafor, it is not their fault that they became diabetic.

“We did our best in supporting him with the little we can as an organisation and individuals, but death is inevitable.

“‘Uncle’ as he is fondly called was energetic, friendly and acrobatic; we enjoyed him while he was alive. We really missed him so much,” he said.

On why the industry was recording deaths, Brown said that death is inevitable for everyone adding that the only difference was that their members were popular as actors and actresses.

“We are not God and cannot change nature. People got to know about their death and are reacting,” he said.

Brown said that the organisation was working to ensure that their members attended to their health by going for regular check-up.

“The organisation has initiated a health insurance scheme for members to curtail their health expenses.

“The industry is doing its best to ensure that actors/actresses sign to Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) that allows them access to 600 hospitals in Nigeria,” he said.

The talented Nollywood actor Muonagor, a native of Idemili in Anambra, was born in Aug. 20, 1962.

He was an actor and producer whose presence on the screens was truly masterful.

In 1989, after his youth service, Muonagor worked for NAN for few years before he ventured into acting in his first movie as Akunatakasi in Taboo 1, a Nigerian movie.
