Man City players expect Aguero, Fernandinho to leave

Manchester City players believe Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho will leave in the summer.

Both players find themselves out of contract at the end of the season and with a matter of months until expiry.

The Athletic says City’s squad believe Aguero and Fernandinho, two pillars of their title-winning sides in recent years, will go.

Fernandinho, who turns 36 in May, reportedly has several offers on the table should he leave City.

Aguero has seen his season wrecked by injury but he is also thought to be a man in demand.

Chelsea director declares interest for two Argentine players

Chelsea are interested in Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero AND Juventus ace Paulo Dybala.

That’s according to Christian Martin, of ESPN, who quotes an unnamed Chelsea director from Wednesday night’s Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid.

Martin, on social media, reports he spoke with the director in the Stamford Bridge carpark and asked him about the prospect of signing Argentine players.

“You always told me that we weren’t bringing in the Argentines,” responded the Chelsea chief. “Well that might change soon.

“Sergio (Agüero) interests us. And a lot. And (Paulo) Dybala too.”

Messi is always complaining – Aguero

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has joked that he and Barcelona ace Lionel Messi are “like an old married couple”, when they hook up on Argentina duty.

Messi made his debut for his country in 2005, a year before Aguero joined the Argentina senior set-up.

The duo have played together at three World Cups, four Copa Americas and won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Although both players always share a room, Aguero has revealed that he always leaves Messi complaining.

“He always complains, we are like an old married couple.

“I always fall asleep with the TV on and when I wake up the next morning he is always complaining to me.

“He arrives at the hotel and instantly takes a shower while I’m just sitting talking on my mobile phone. Then he will remind me that we need to go down to dinner and we do not have time,” Aguero said on the Santo Sabado programme.

  • Aguero, Klopp set new Premier League record

Manchester City’s striker Sergio Aguero and Liverpool’s manager Jurgen Klopp both set new records as they were named the Premier League’s Player and Manager of the Month for January, respectively.

Aguero has won the award seven times, more than any other player in Premier League history.

Klopp, meanwhile, has claimed five of the six manager awards available in 2019-20, also a record.

Aguero, 31, played in three of City’s four Premier League games in January. He sat out the New Year’s Day victory over Everton, but he returned to score a record-breaking hat-trick against Aston Villa.

The Argentinian then netted both goals for City as the champions were held to a 2-2 draw by Crystal Palace, and he scored his sixth goal of the month in a 1-0 win at Sheffield United to move to 16 for the season.

Aguero needs just four more to reach the 20-goal mark in a Premier League season for the seventh time in his career. Only Alan Shearer has achieved that feat previously.

Klopp also continues to oversee record after record, and his champions-elect registered another perfect month in January. Liverpool kicked off 2020 with a 2-0 win over Sheffield United before winning 1-0 away at Tottenham Hotspur and beating Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield.

They finally conceded a goal in the new year against Wolverhampton Wanderers, but Roberto Firmino netted an 84th-minute winner at Molineux.

West Ham United became the Reds’ final victims of January when they were beaten 2-0 at home, which moved Liverpool to a quite staggering 70 points.

Last season Arsenal finished fifth in the Premier League table with 70 points, as did Chelsea the season before. In 2015-16, it was enough for Tottenham Hotspur to finish third.

  • Aguero scores hat-trick as Man City thrash Huddersfield

Sergio Aguero scored a superb hat-trick as Manchester City continued their strong start to their Premier League title defence by thrashing Huddersfield at Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola’s side, who beat Arsenal 2-0 in their opener, lost only once at home all of season and victory never looked in doubt against the Terriers, who have two defeats from their first two matches of the campaign.

Huddersfield did manage to hold City at bay for 25 minutes but were undone when goalkeeper Ederson superbly picked out Aguero with a pinpoint pass and the striker drew out Terriers keeper Ben Hamer before lifting the ball into the net.

Gabriel Jesus added a second seven minutes later with a crisp low strike from the edge of the area, before Aguero pounced on a Hamer error to stab in his second soon after.

Jon Gorenc Stankovic gave the visitors the slightest glimmer of hope before half time when he poked in from Steve Mounie’s flick-on, but any optimism was snuffed out early in the second half by a brilliant free-kick from David Silva.

Aguero then wrapped up his hat-trick with a smart flick from Benjamin Mendy’s cross – before a Terence Kongolo own goal sealed an emphatic win for an impressive City.

Guardiola’s side are top of the table and have scored eight goals in two games, conceding just one. Huddersfield, meanwhile, drop to the bottom of the standings on goal difference.

  • Aguero emerges player of the month for January

Sergio Aguero has won his fifth Premier League player of the month award, claiming the prize after scoring five goals in four Manchester City league appearances during January.

Aguero has thrived in the injury-enforced absence of fellow forward Gabriel Jesus, with his goals ensuring City are on track to romp to the Premier League title.

The 29-year-old began 2018 with a goal in a 3-1 defeat of Watford, following up with a brace against Burnley in the FA Cup and a late headed winner in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final against Bristol City.

Aguero was not on target in City’s 4-3 loss at Liverpool – their first domestic defeat of the season but he scored a perfect hat-trick in a 3-1 home win against Newcastle United.

With five Premier League player of the month awards to his name, Aguero is just one behind the joint-record holders, Spurs striker Harry Kane – the December winner – and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

Aguero, rapidly closing in on 200 goals for City, has continued his blistering form into February, scoring four goals in Saturday’s rout of Leicester City.

The Argentina international was also on target in City’s last match, a 4-0 demolition of Swiss side Basel in the Champions League last-16 on Tuesday.

January’s managerial prize went to Eddie Howe after Bournemouth climbed out of the Premier League’s relegation zone and into the top half during the month, ending Pep Guardiola’s run of four successive victories.

Willian claimed the goal of the month award for Chelsea’s superb team effort in a Premier League win at Brighton and Hove Albion.

  • Aguero gives Man City Carabao Cup advantage 5m

Sergio Aguero scored an injury-time winner as Manchester City came from behind to beat Bristol City in the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg.

The Championship side were excellent, especially in the first half, and led from Bobby Reid’s penalty, awarded after John Stones chopped down the Robins player.

But Kevin de Bruyne equalised for the unbeaten Premier League leaders after a one-two with Raheem Sterling.

And as the underdogs looked set to take a draw and an away goal back to Bristol for the second leg, substitute Aguero headed in Bernardo Silva’s cross.

But Bristol City – who knocked out their hosts’ neighbours Manchester United in the previous round – produced a performance that will give them encouragement for the return at Ashton Gate on Tuesday, 23 January (19:45 GMT).

    Heartbreak for brave Bristol City

Lee Johnson’s Bristol City have had a season to remember. As well as challenging for promotion to the top flight, they have beaten four Premier League sides on their run to the last four – Watford, Stoke, Crystal Palace and famously United in the quarter-finals.

Impressively in a season where many Premier League sides have adopted defensive tactics against Manchester City, who are yet to lose a domestic game all season, the Robins played some brave, risky attacking football.

Joe Bryan had a shot saved by Claudio Bravo at his near post and then Marlon Pack’s 20-yard shot from Oleksandr Zinchenko’s clearance was straight at the keeper.

They deserved to lead when Josh Brownhill won the ball off Eliaquim Mangala and played in Reid, who was brought down by Stones’ mistimed tackle.

The Robins were more subdued in the second half, but almost scored a famous winner when debutant Liam Walsh fired wide from the corner of the box late on. And he was made to regret that miss all the more when Aguero popped up seconds from the end.

Sergio Aguero scores twice as Man City survive Burnley scare

Sergio Aguero scored twice in two second-half minutes to help Premier League leaders Manchester City fight back to beat Burnley and reach the FA Cup fourth round.

A John Stones mistake let in Ashley Barnes to give Burnley a surprise lead.

However, Aguero levelled from a quickly-taken free-kick and made it 2-1 from Ilkay Gundogan’s back-heel.

Leroy Sane ran on to David Silva’s pass to add the third before Bernardo Silva slotted the fourth into an empty net.

City’s win stretched their domestic unbeaten run to 26 games this season and keeps alive their chances of winning four trophies.

It is 32 games and 258 days since City were last beaten in the league or either domestic cup -by Arsenal in their FA Cup semi-final on 23 April 2017.

That defeat ensured City boss Pep Guardiola would end his first season in English football without a trophy – the first campaign he had failed to secure silverware in his managerial career.

This season is shaping up to be very different, with this impressive recovery keeping City in all four competitions and in with a chance of completing an unprecedented quadruple.

As well as being in the hat for round four of the FA Cup, City are 15 points clear at the top of the Premier League, in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and the last 16 of the Champions League.

  • Nigerians scared of me – Aguero

Although Nigeria defeated Argentina 4-2 in a recent friendly game in Russia, the Albiceleste striker, Kun Aguero still rates the Super Eagles as the weakest team in Group B of the 2018 World Cup.

Aguero started and scored one goal in the game before he was withdrawn due to ill-health. Argentina was leading 2-1 before Aguero’s exit and according to the Manchester City striker, the circumstances surrounding his withdrawal affected his teammates, who later succumbed to Nigeria.

He told Lbero, “The second half against Nigeria I could not see, because I was in the Hospital, but when they told me how it panned out, I asked, ‘what happened?

“That happens sometimes, it was because they thought of me, they were scared, I do not know.”He described the other teams in the group as descent, picking out Croatia as the team likely to trouble Argentina in Russia.

“The rivals are not bad, but let’s not say it’s very good for us, Iceland is one of the debutants, they do not play badly, they are a very organized team and they have (Gylfi) Sigurðsson.

”They are the first two games, they are the most important, they will not be easy.“Croatia have a great midfield, they have Modric, Rakitic, you have Perisic, who plays outside and he’s very fast, Croatia is a bit more complete.”

Meanwhile, former U-20 national team coach, John Obuh has urged the Eagles’ handlers to use the Super Six pre-season championship slated for next week in Kano to discover more players for inclusion in the CHAN bound team.

Obuh noted that the inclusion of the CHAN Eagles in the Super Six Championship is a good platform for the players to blend properly ahead of the continental showpiece, adding that selecting the best players in the domestic league to play against their various clubs would expose the coaches to more talented players.

Obuh also noted that the coaches needed to give every player the opportunity to fight for a place in the CHAN team, adding that it would not be a good omen for the country if the Eagles team B failed in the CHAN after playing in the WAFU final.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles Media Officer, Toyin Ibitoye has disclosed that the invited players for the Super Six Championship are expected to be in Kano on Monday.
