Just in: Rivers elders ask Tinubu to consolidate on his earlier move to reconcile Fubara-Wike feud

The elders and leaders in Rivers State rising from a meeting on Sunday asked President Bola Tinubu to consolidate on his earlier move to reconcile Governor Siminalayi Fubara and FCT minister Nyesom Wike.

This was contained in a communique issued and jointly signed by the leaders of the elders forum.

    Read full communique below:

The Rivers State Elders and leaders Forum met today December 17th 2023 in Port Harcourt under the leadership of His Excellency, Chief Rufus Ada George, former Governor of Rivers State.

The Forum reviewed the outcome of its previous meetings and follow up actions which include letters seeking audience with our sons; the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, and Chief (Barrister) Nyesom Wike, Former Governor and presently, Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Forum reviewed the embarrassing and dangerous ongoing happenings in Rivers State and by extension Nigeria, viz: attempt to impeach Sir Siminialayi Fubara, Executive Governor of Rivers State, bombing of the Rivers State House of Assembly Chambers, attack on the life of the Executive Governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara allegedly by some security agents on Monday 30th October, 2023 and other acts of impunity and lawlessness which portend great dangers to the peace and security of Rivers State and Nigeria as a whole.

After an extensive deliberation and consideration of the issues, the forum resolved as follows:

    1. The Forum regretted that neither Governor Siminialayi Fubara nor Chief (Barrister) Nyesom Wike responded to our letters seeking for audience with each of them.

    2. The attempt to impeach the Governor of Rivers State barely about six months in office without explaining to the good people of the State, the reasons and infractions of law is UNACCEPTABLE.

    3. The Forum condemn every form of violence and lawlessness in Rivers State and therefore demand proper investigation of the crisis and those responsible be brought to Justice.

    4. The Forum reviewed the demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly by the Rivers State Government and urged the Government to expedite action on rebuilding the demolished House of Assembly Complex so that law makers will continue their legislative business in the permanent site within the shortest possible time.

    5. The Forum condemn in its entirety, the misuse of Rivers people political power vested in politicians by the people for personal gains and interest. Hence, we condemn in its entirety, the recent defection of twenty seven law makers without recourse to their constituents.

    6. The Forum is aware of and thus rejects, the news making the rounds on social media of Forum Shopping And Purchase Of Legal Instruments outside Rivers State to cause crisis in the State, thereby endangering human lives and property.

“An alleged already written/ premeditated court ruling by one Justice Donatus Okorowo of Federal High Court 8 Abuja on an EXPARTE application secretly filled in the night by Pro Wike former lawmakers which the Judge wants to deliver tomorrow been Monday where he wants to stop the declaration of their seat vacant (an action that have been done) and also give them the legitimacy to move in with DSS and police to start the illegal impeachment of Gov. Fubara”.

The foregoing is disturbing and generating serious tension in Rivers State, and thus giving the Forum great concern.

    7. We therefore urge the judiciary and all security agencies to be wary and alive in discharging their responsibilities in order not to worsen the already tensed atmosphere in Rivers State.

    8. Finally, the Forum urge His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to consolidate on his earlier intervention as the consequences of inaction may not only affect Rivers State, the Niger Delta Region and the Federal Government. The Forum owes this solemn truth as a duty to the Federal Government.

God bless Rivers State and her People.

God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

    Signed

This came to for after negotiations between the President and the Deputy Governor, representatives of Governor Akeredolu, federal and state lawmakers from the state, officials of the state’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress, and other stakeholders from Ondo at the State House, Abuja.⁣

The President advised all opposing parties to bury the hatchet and embrace peace, eliciting commitments to this effect. ⁣

This means that Governor Akeredolu remains Chief Executive of the State, Aiyedatiwa remains Deputy Governor, and members of the State Executive Council continue their respective duties, even as the leadership of the State’s House of Assembly and the APC Chapter in Ondo State is preserved.⁣

⁣The Deputy Governor. Aiyedatiwa, who declared his decision to maintain the status quo and unite all the factions, said: “I want to say that I pledge to, all of you that I embrace every one of you. I put behind all that has happened before now. I’ve let go and also let God, just as the President has advised us.⁣

“And I want to say that with no offence, no guile in my mind whatsoever.

” All that has happened is politics. Impeachment is part of politics. If you survive it, it is also politics. It has come. I’ve survived it, and every other thing is in the past. ⁣

“It is one big family and our father has intervened to bring all the children together to remain under the same family with the position that I occupy, I will carry every one of you along in every decision that needs to be taken and in everything that we do, we will work together; the executive and the legislature will work together to ensure that governance is on the right track.”

He pleaded with all members of the State Executive Council to rally around the Governor and himself to “bring the dividend of democracy” to the people of Ondo State. ⁣

“All the Executive Council members, I want to plead with all of you to cooperate with me, with the Governor, so that we can bring the dividend of democracy to our people.⁣

“We should respect one another regarding the offices we occupy and our age differences. So, it’s going to be mutual respect. ⁣

“And I want to assure the party structure that we will work together because the party is supreme. We will always give you your due respect,” the Ondo State Deputy Governor pledged. ⁣

The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Oladiji Olamide, who read the details of the resolution, said, “Our resolution is that one, we shall embrace peace.

Secondly, there would be no more dissolution of the cabinet, and the Deputy Governor would maintain the status quo as far as the House of Assembly leadership is concerned.

Appeal Court verdict: Yoruba group in Kano plead Tinubu, obas to intervene urgently

The Concerned Yoruba Community in Kano (CYCK) has called on all Obas and leaders of thought in South West to without further delay by engaging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with a view to resolving political logjam created by Appeal Court sack of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

The group, at a press conference addressed by Mr Taofeek Olaosebikon, its Secretary General Olaosebikan said judgment perceived as wrong in the governorship contest would give a bad impression about the President Bola Tinubu.

“That is the word going round now. A stitch in time, they say, saves nine,” he said.

Olaosebikan noted that Kano is a very volatile state politically and as such, all men and women of goodwill should be concerned about the situation in the state and rally round toward a collective initiative to save the state from any calamity.

“Of course, you are all living witnesses to the whole developments which are clearly suggesting ill-winds because of the anticipated threat to peace and stability in the state.

“Importantly, we the Yoruba people in Kano have been here long enough to articulate and appreciate the political tendencies here and implications for our common good.

“For the record, many of us were born and raised in Kano, indeed, we have become Kano indigenes in some strategic sense.

“This is our home as we have come to acknowledge and appreciate our stay in Kano and indeed our economic sustenance, well being and development,” he said.

He added:“Our children are doing fine in schools here as well as many of different ages engaged in one activity or the other.

So Kano is our home and we are happy being here.

“We know the political tradition here in Kano and the issues surrounding such positions. In the case of the last election cycle in Kano, we know how the election went and the outright winners compared to the losers.

“We are using this platform to call on all Youruba Obas and leaders of thought to wade into the Kano situation without further delay by engaging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a possible political settlement of the Kano logjam,” Olaosebikan said.

He said that average man already believed that the judiciary had been interfered with going by recent developments in the country.

”We are hereby calling on our fathers, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja 11, to intervene without further delay.

“We are also calling on the Oba of Lagos, Alake of Egba, Awujale of Ijebuland, Olubadan of Ibadan and other Yoruba leading lights to come to our aid as we won’t find it easy if the situation degenerates further as we actually expect that it would,” he said.

  • Tinubu will reposition Ajaokuta Steel to produce military hardware – Badaru

Tinubu will reposition Ajaokuta Steel to produce military hardware – Badaru

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar has said that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to the revitalization and repositioning of Ajaokuta Steel Company that will be capable of producing military hardware to support the fight against insecurity in Nigeria.

The Minister revealed this when he received the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu and the Managing Director of Ajaokuta Steel Company, Mr. Sumaila Abdul Akaba in his office, Ship House, Abuja.

Badaru said that Ajaokuta Steel Company was known for the local production of military hardware and that there was the need to partner with the Ministry of Steel Development because 80/90 per cent of what is required for the production of military hardware was steel.

He said that strengthening the company to produce military hardware instead of relying on foreign production would boost the nation’s fight against insurgency and other related crimes.

“Local production of military hardware is critical because the crisis we have in the country at present will not allow us rely on other countries for military hardware,” he said.

In his remark, the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu, said that reviving Ajaokuta Steel would be a game changer to the Nigerian industry and the economy as a whole.

He said that due to paucity of funds, production was stalled.

“But I believe that if initiatives are put in place, Ajaokuta Steel will be revived and work will resume within the first four years of the Present Bola Tinubu’s administration.

He stated that the company has about 48 production units and one of such units was for the production of military hardware, adding that if the Ministry of Defence collaborated with the company, it would have the capacity to produce military hardware that the nation would need.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Ibrahim Abubakar Kana said that the essence of the meeting was to take the discussion to the stages where the company is and develop a step-by-step approach on how to actualize the dreams of reviving Ajaokuta Steel in the next four years.

Speaker Abbas stated this in Abuja on Tuesday when dignitaries from within and outside the National Assembly as well as the international community joined him to officially unveil the Legislative Agenda of the 10th House to the public.

Gracing the occasion were President of the Senate, Senator Godwill Akpabio; Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; and Deputy British High Commissioner to Nigeria (Development), Chris Pycroft.

Also at the event were Simon Ridley of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); Governance Adviser, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Dr Mathew Ayibakuro; and Resident Representative, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), Marijan Peran.

Senator Akpabio, SGF Akume and Pycroft presented their goodwill messages at the ceremony.

The House had considered and adopted the Legislative Agenda last week.

In his address at the ceremony, the Speaker noted that upon the inauguration of the 10th House on June 13, 2023, “we were very mindful of the immense responsibility placed upon us by our constituents across Nigeria.”

Speaker Abbas stated that the agenda being unveiled was “a demonstration of our commitment to deploying every legislative instrument available to us, towards meeting the yearnings and aspirations of the people we serve.”

While saying the Legislative Agenda was aptly titled ‘The People’s House,’ the Speaker stated that the policy document was rooted in the fundamental belief that “our primary role as lawmakers is to serve the best interests of our constituents.”

He said: “We recognise the diverse needs and challenges currently facing our nation.

Despite these, we are optimistic that together with His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, we will proffer long-lasting solutions to set Nigeria on a sure path of development.

“Our agenda encompasses a range of eight critical issues, designed to provide the necessary legislative support to the eight-point Agenda of the executive. These issues include strengthening good governance, economic development, improving national security, law reform, economic growth and development, social sector reform and development, inclusion and open parliament, influencing foreign policy and climate change, and environmental sustainability.

“We are dedicated to fostering an environment that promotes sustainable economic growth, and development. We shall use every legislative tool at our disposal to create jobs for our teeming youths, address the challenge posed by poverty, improve infrastructure, ensure top quality and affordable healthcare and provide security for all Nigerians.”

Speaker Abbas mandated all the standing Committees to integrate the Agenda in their respective work-plans, while Members of the House should also ensure that legislative proposals, including bills, motions, are in line with the provisions of the Agenda.

“The adopted structure indicates short, medium and long-term milestones and key performance indicators to track progress easily. The implementation framework is designed to allow for flexibility in responding to emerging issues or crises.

“We have equally set up a Legislative Agenda Monitoring and Implementation Committee to ensure religious implementation of this agenda. I charge citizens to hold us to task on the articulated issues and even more,” he added.

The Speaker commended the efforts put in by the Ad Hoc Committee on Legislative Agenda chaired by the Leader of the House, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, which drafted the document. He equally appreciated technical partners, notably Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC) and Yiaga Africa, for their support.

He said: “Most importantly, we appreciate the contributions of citizens who answered the national call to make inputs into this citizens’ agenda.

“I call upon my esteemed colleagues in the House to join hands in pursuit of our shared vision for a better Nigeria. Let us work tirelessly to fulfil our mandate with integrity, diligence, and a deep sense of patriotism. We shall partner with our colleagues in the Senate to drive and achieve the objective and benchmarks set out in this Agenda.”

Speaking earlier, Senate President Akpabio, while noting that the House was introducing its Legislative Agenda ahead of the Senate, said the Red Chamber would emulate the Green chamber soon.

Senator Akpabio, however, stated that the two chambers of the National Assembly have a shared vision and were working towards achieving same national goals.

  • Supreme Court verdict: NADECO urges Tinubu to act on APC manifesto

Supreme Court verdict: NADECO urges Tinubu to act on APC manifesto

The National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) has congratulated President Bola Tinubu on his judicial victory, urging him to now prioritise implementation of the APC manifesto.

The National Publicity Secretary of NADECO , Pa Ayo Opadokun made this known in a statement  in Lagos on Monday.

Recall that both former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party had urged the Apex Court to dismiss and set aside the Sept. 6 Judgment of PEPT, which affirmed the victory of Tinubu.

However, the seven-man panel  led by Justice Inyang Okoro on Thursday, held that the appeal lacked merit and “is hereby dismissed.”

Opadokun said NADECO further wished to state that now was the time to deliver the socio-economic and political sphere through well thought out and rightly directed policies.

The NADECO scribe said these were policies desirable to quickly alleviate the unacceptable level of suffering, poverty, economic misery and neglect to which Nigerians had been subjected to  by immediate past rulers and leaders, for many years.

He said: “NADECO again restates for emphasis that while we strongly desire an immediate upliftment in the standard and quality of living of Nigerians, we expect much more than the necessary bread and butter economic gains.

“NADECO believes that the  President Bola Tinubu Government must equally prioritise the process of implementing the APC manifesto particularly in Article 7, pages 3, 7, 29, 37:

“Under the aims and objectives of its article 7, the APC Constitution commits the party to firstly, promote and foster the unity, political stability and national consciousness of the people of Nigeria, and secondly, to promote true federalism in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“In the foreword to its vision for a New Nigeria (page three , second paragraph), the APC Manifesto commits the party to ‘implement efficient public financial management strategies and ensure true federalism”.

“This is as well as “restructure governance in a way that kick starts our political economy so that we can begin to walk the path of our better future”.

“Also, in its manifesto (page seven ), APC entered into an “Honest Contract” with Nigeria to create a federalism with “more equitable distribution of national revenue to the states and local governments because this is where grassroots democracy and economic development must be established.”

Opadokun said in its commitment to restore good government, the APC manifesto again stressed reliance on enhancing federalism through a two-pronged approach.

According to him, this is devolving control of policing and local prisons to the states and giving the right to nominate State Police Commissioners to governors.

He said others were expanding the role of the Council of States to act as a consultation and negotiating forum between the Federal and state governments to agree on joint economic and social initiatives.

Opadokun said finally that the APC Manifesto pledged to devolve more revenue and powers to the states and Local Governments so that decision making was closer to the people.

The NADECO scribe said the manifesto also pledged to bring the government closer to the people through political decentralization including local policing.

He said the El-Rufai Committee’s Report recommended among others,  that the APC government should take immediate steps to return Nigeria to Federal Constitutional Governance upon which the country secured her independence.

According to him, these are devolution of powers to state, resource control, making local government affairs an affair of the states, constitutional amendments to allow merger of states, state police among others.

Opadokun wished Tinubu divine guidance, robust health, necessary tact and discipline to deliver exemplary services to Nigerians during his tour of duty.

He said this golden opportunity must not be lost as the black race had waited for too long for the country as the most popular black nation to provide leadership for the black world in the commity of nations
