2023: Masari withdraws as APC Vice Presidential candidate

Following the announcement of Sen. Kashim Shettima, as the running mate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ibrahim Masari, who was nominated as a ‘placeholder to Ahmed Tinubu has withdrawn from the 2023 presidential race.

Thenewsguru.com reports that Tinubu on Sunday told newsmen of his choice of the immediate past governor of Borno State, Sen. Kashim Shettima as substantive running mate in place of Masari.

In a statement signed by Masari and issued from Saudi Arabia on Sunday, titled, ‘Resignation As APC Vice Presidential Nominee’, he said he was stepping down “after much reflection and wider consultations.”

“This is to inform our esteemed party leaders under our able President Muhammadu Buhari, teeming party members and the great people of Nigeria, of the outcome of a crucial discussion I just had with the flag-bearer of our great party, All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Recall that I had the singular honour and privilege of being nominated as the running-mate to Asiwaju Tinubu last month after a keenly contested presidential primary ahead of the 2023 general elections.

“But, after much reflection and wider consultations, I now wish to step down. I realized that my decision will enable Asiwaju to have more latitude to give more accommodation and inclusion that will position our party to win the coming elections, with the support of the people of Nigeria.

“In stepping down, I believe I can still serve our party and the country in several other capacities.

“I wish to confirm that I have submitted my withdrawal letter and affidavit to that effect as the Vice Presidential Candidate to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed TInubu in the coming elections.

“On behalf of myself and family, I wish to sincerely thank Asiwaju Tinubu — the Incoming President, Insha Allah — for his trust in me and we promise to remain steadfast in our support for him and the party,” Masari stated.

Meanwhile, the Tinubu Campaign Organization (TCO) has confirmed Masari’s withdrawal as running-mate to Asiwaju Tinubu.

A statement issued on Sunday and signed by the Interim National Coordinator of TCO, Hon. James Faleke, saluted Masari’s sacrifice, saying it believed will give Tinubu an opportunity to take a decision that will further enhance the chances of APC in the 2023 elections.

“This is to inform and confirm that Alhaji Ibrahim Masari has stepped down as Vice Presidential nominee to the flag-bearer of APC in the 2023 presidential elections, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Alhaji Masari has communicated his decision to us from Saudi Arabia where he is presently performing the lesser hajj.

“While saluting Alhaji Masari’s sacrifice, we believe this will give Asiwaju Tinubu an opportunity to take a decision that will further enhance the chances of our great party in the 2023 elections,” Faleke stated.

  • Tinubu has settled for a Muslim running mate – says Source

Tinubu has settled for a Muslim running mate – says Source

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) Bola Tinubu, has reportedly chosen a Muslim running mate.

A highly-competent source in the Tinubu Campaign Organisation who requested anonymity confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Abuja.

The source said Tinubu would make the name of the candidate public this week.

“The vice-presidential nominee may most likely be a former governor and senator from the Northeast part of Nigeria.

“The person is also by accident of birth a Muslim, confirming what Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State said on Saturday that Tinubu had settled for a Muslim-Muslim ticket,’’ the source said.

The source added that in picking the running mate, Tinubu was not thinking about religion, but about the competence, exposure, and intellectual depth of the candidate.

“The considerations given for the choice of a running mate were dictated by the need to choose an individual capable of working with the presidential candidate to take Nigeria to greater heights,’’ the source said

Tinubu is scheduled to pay Sallah homage to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in Daura, Katsina, on Sunday to brief him on his chosen running mate.

The former two-term Lagos State governor won APC’s presidential ticket at the party’s June 8 special national convention and presidential primary election.

He earlier chose Ibrahim Kabiru Masari, as a placeholder for the vice-presidential slot.

Tinubu was away in France from June 27 on a short vacation during which he held some strategic meetings. He returned to Nigeria on Saturday early enough for Sallah festivities.

Tinubu’s running mate is expected to be announced during the week.

  • Tinubu speaks on meeting Wike in France

Former Lagos state governor and  the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu  has denied holding any meeting with the Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, in France.

Tinubu traveled to France few days ago on a  vacation and also to consult with political stakeholders in the country.

However, Joe Igbokwe a chieftain of the APC in Lagos state claimed there was a meeting between the two heavyweights in France.

On Friday night, the Tinubu Media Officer in a statement signed by Tunde Rahman said although the APC flag bearer holds Wike in high esteem, such a meeting never took place.

His statement reads in part: “We have seen a viral social media post made by one of the chieftains of All Progressives Congress in Lagos State and media reports emanating from same about a supposed meeting in France between APC Presidential Standard-bearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and His Excellency, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State.

“It has become imperative to set the record straight. Although Asiwaju Tinubu is presently in France, he didn’t have any meeting with Governor Wike whether in that country or anywhere whatsoever.

“This, however, does not detract from the fact that the APC presidential candidate holds Governor Wike in high esteem.

“And given the national and across-party lines appeal of Asiwaju Tinubu’s candidature, he will not hesitate to meet any important national leader when desirable.

“As made public earlier, Asiwaju Tinubu is in France for some important engagements. He will return to the country shortly.

“We would like, once again, to advise journalists to always cross-check their information with appropriate officers before rushing to press to avoid unintended errors.”

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Zamfara chapter has congratulated Bola Tinubu for emerging the party’s flag bearer for the presidential election at the party’s special convention.

According to the party, delegates made the best choice for Nigeria.

This is contained in a statement issued by the party’s Publicity secretary, Yusuf Idris in Gusau on Thursday.

Idris described Tinubu’s emergence as the party’s flag bearer for the 2023 presidential election as a welcome development.

“The state APC under the leadership of Tukur Danfulani commends the delegates across the country that participated in the primaries and made the best choice for Nigeria.

“The former governor of Lagos State and leader of our great party, has overtime demonstrated leadership prowess through the mentoring of many prominent Nigerians to exalted positions.

“We are confident that the party is on the right path of success in the coming 2023 general elections.

“Tinubu had set up a strong development plan for Lagos as its two times governor which the state is still benefitting from as the subsequent leadership is being handled by his beneficiaries.

“We are very confident that if such a committed leader takes over as president, Zamfara will be part of the early beneficiaries of the administration.

“This will significantly address the issue of insecurity and bring it to a conclusive end.’’

The statement also quoted Danfulani as commending “President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing internal democracy in the party which demonstrated his earlier stand of not imposing or anointing any candidate’’.

“We appreciate the effort by national APC chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu for managing the challenges up to the level of conducting free, fair and credible convention acceptable to all meaning Nigerians.

“We wish to particularly commend APC northern governors for coming together to support the shifting of the mantle of the nation’s leadership to the South.

“We appreciate them for supporting unity, peace and stability in the party which led to Tinubu’s emergence as the best candidate.’’

He commended the 2022 APC Special Convention Committee for successfully conducting the primary election.

Omo-Agege also showered glowing tributes on APC governors in the north of Nigeria for setting the pace by zoning the presidency to the South.

He called on Tinubu to be magnanimous in victory and stressed the need for all presidential aspirants to join hands with the APC’s presidential candidate and the party in ensuring victory.

“Not everyone gave APC a chance to conduct a free, fair and credible presidential primary election. With the undercurrents in the build-up, some had predicted that our great party would go into extinction after this convention.

“With the transparent process that saw the emergence of Asiwaju Tinubu as our party’s standard-bearer, I am confident more than ever before that this is the beginning of even greater tidings for our party.

“We proved our critics wrong. We have shown that with unity of purpose, the sky is our starting point,’’ he said.

  • Why should Nigerians give you another opportunity? – Tinubu to Atiku

Following the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 presidential election, an All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has called on Atiku to explain why he should be given another opportunity.

Tinubu made the statement on Sunday morning while congratulating Atiku for his victory at the keenly contested primary, praising his political experience and patriotism.

He further stated that the former vice president and his party will have to explain why Nigerians should give them “another opportunity, after squandering 16 years at the central government, without much to show”.

“Nigerians are yet to forget the national ruin and mismanagement of our country for 16 years by successive PDP administration and this bad memory will dog the campaign of the PDP Candidate,” Mr Tinubu said via the statement by the Director, Media and Communication of his campaign organisation, Bayo Onanuga.

The former Lagos governor also said he was looking forward to squaring up with Atiku “as a worthy opponent in the coming presidential election”.

Mr Tinubu is a frontline presidential aspirant on the platform of the ruling APC which will hold its primary next week.

With the PDP picking its candidate from the North which has more registered voters than the south, it remains unclear if the APC will be bold enough to nominate Mr Tinubu from the south as its flagbearer for the election.

  • 2023 Presidential Election: Tinubu to announce defection to SDP soon -Sources reveal

2023 Presidential Election: Tinubu to announce defection to SDP soon -Sources reveal

Ahead of APC Primaries, there are indicatons that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu would decamp to the Social Democratic Party, SDP, soon.

“Reality is dawning on Asiwaju Bol Ahmed Tinubu that a surprise might erupt in the forth coming primaries of the All Progressives Congress and to forestall the unthinkable, the strong man of Lagos politics had prepared a ‘plan b’ for himself, to enable him actualize his age long dream of becoming the president of Nigeria, come 2023,” inside sources said.

There have already been reports that certain prominent members of President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet are opposed to Tinubu’s presidential ambitions and have urged the president against supporting the embattled APC leader.

TheNewsGuru.com gathered that Tinubu’s decision to join the SDP was sparked by a recent revelation as well as the outcome of yesterday’s meeting with other presidential candidates in the South West.

There were also speculations that Tinubu may have also influenced the announced defection of Abdulmumin Jibrin his Campaign Group Director General.

I have done my best for APC; it is time to move on. By the grace of God, I will announce the new party I will be joining in 24 hours. More information will be forthcoming,” he said.

Despite the fact that Jibrin is yet to announce his next political party, his defection increased rumors about Tinubu’s likely defection, which “is happening sooner than we imagined,” according to insiders.

To be or not to be, Tinubu’s purported defection has now dominated discussion in several quarters, especially after none of the aspirants agreed to the subject of a consensus candidate when it was raised by one of the conveners during yesterday’s meeting of South West Presidential ticket contenders.

However it was learned that Tinubu intended to test the waters with the governorship race in Ekiti on June 18, 2022, he had to move up his tactics due to the reluctance of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to modify the Presidential primary timetable.

INEC in a press statement had insisted that the Commission would on no account shift the deadline originally announced for primaries and this has thrown political parties, especially the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ruling APC in a state of disarray ever since.

Clark described Osinbajo as an intelligent man who has what it takes to rule Nigeria in 2023.

According to Clark: “I’m not aware of Jonathan running for presidency. I’m a father to him and he has not informed me about such intentions.

“The southwest is the most educated and sophisticated people in Nigeria, but Tinubu should go and rest. Other than the Igbos, I would vote for the Vice President; he is an intelligent fellow.

“How many times have we heard Tinubu talking about the affairs of this nation or criticizing those in power?”
