Those waiting for Wike’s downfall ‘ll wait endlessly – Aide

Mr Lere Olayinka, spokesman to the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike says those waiting for the minister’s political downfall will wait endlessly.

Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, made the remarks while reacting to comments by former governor of Ebonyi Sam Egwu.

Egwu had in a statement on Tuesday, said that Wike was living on borrowed time, adding that the FCT minister’s influence would soon burn out.

Reacting, the spokesman said in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday, that those waiting for Wike’s downfall would wait forever.

He argued that Wike’s political progress was based on personal hard work, dedication, commitment and most importantly, God’s grace.

Olayinka also faulted Egwu’s challenge to Wike to make it possible for the suspended governor of Rivers, Siminalayi Fubara to return to office.

He also described allegations that the FCT Minister now exercises the powers of President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly in Rivers as absurd.

“This type of statement should not come from a former lawmaker,” he said.

The Wike spokesman also dismissed the threats by a faction of the South East leaders of the PDP to withdraw their support for the party.

According to him, it was illogical for people who could not deliver anything substantial in terms of votes to the PDP in the 2023 elections to be threatening to withdraw their support for the party.

“The PDP constitution is clear as to who is the National Secretary of the party. His name is Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and anyone saying or doing anything contrary is only interested in the collapse of the party.”

No leader can do everything, lower your expectations – Garba Shehu tells Nigerians

Malam Garba Shehu, former Media Aide to former President Mohammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians to lower their expectations on political leaders in the country.

Shehu made the called in his remark at the 21st Daily Trust Annual Dialogue organised by Trust Media Group on Thursday in Abuja.

He said his principal no doubt had some challenges in ruling the country which to him is normal, adding that there no nation or.leader that never had challenges.

“President Muhammadu Buhari is a victim of crisis of expectations; and I think that the lesson for Nigerians from what I saw during the Buhari period and even Tinubu is, Nigerians should begin to lower their expectations on political leaders.

“This is because,  these expectations are simply  inhuman. Leaders can do a lot of things, but no leader can do everything.

“During the time of Buhari, travellers to the Eastern Region used to spend about three days on the road, but after massive investment on infrastructure by Buhari, the travel time have reduced to about six hours.

“The government then also banned the importation of rice; after that, our farmers became so productive that production of rice skyrocketed and we were even feeding the whole of West Africa,” Shehu said.

According to him, Nigerians are still feeding well today.

He said if one doesn’t know where he or she is coming from, one would not know where he or she is going to.

The annual Daily Trust Dialogue is part of the Media Trust Group’s contributions to stimulating discussions by Nigerians and fellow Africans towards enhancing national, and indeed, African integration and cohesion, which are crucial for sustainable socio-political growth and economic development of Nigeria, and the African Continent at large. Since 2002, Media Trust has hosted the annual public lecture series to discuss topical issues on various aspects of governance. The series of dialogues had been attended by past Heads of Government, the leadership of the National Assembly as well as captains of commerce and industry, aside from members of the diplomatic corps.

The Daily Trust Dialogue had equally been graced at different times by eminent personalities from across Africa.

They include the late former President of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings; and Salim Salim, former Prime Minister of Tanzania.

Others are the late Winnie Mandela of South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle; Mo Ibrahim, founder of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation; and Samia Nkrumah, daughter of late Kwame Nkrumah.

Several serving and past presidents of the Nigerian Senate and speakers of the House of Representatives, governors and deputy governors, also participated in the event over the years.

No plot to influence tribunal’s judgment – Governor’s aide

Abia Government has described the allegation that it is plotting to influence the judgment of the Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal in favour of Gov. Alex Otti as unfounded.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, made the denial at a news briefing at the Government House, Umuahia on Tuesday.

A body, known as the National Coalition against Terrorism, alleged that the State Government had concluded plans to intimidate the Governorship Election Tribunal judges and influence the judgment, in favour of Otti.

NAN reports that the tribunal had fixed Friday, October 6, for judgment in the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), challenging the declaration of Otti as governor.

In a similar vein, another organisation, called the Abia Youth Interest Group, alleged that Otti was using the state fund to sponsor the petition by the Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi, challenging President Bola Tinubu’s election.

Reacting to the allegations, Ekeoma said they were weighty and capable of causing disaffection, insecurity as well as breakdown of law and order in the state.

He, therefore, called on the relevant authorities and security agencies to use their good offices to thoroughly investigate the allegation levelled against the governor and government and bring the mischief makers to book.

“The young men who organised these press conferences should be invited by security agencies to come and throw more light on their allegations to enable law enforcement agencies to carry out thorough investigation that could lead to the arrest of the culprits.

“Otti’s position as Governor of Abia is a product of a nationally celebrated governorship election victory.

“We consider it demeaning and a provocative blackmail for a group of hatchet men with zero stake in the Abia Project to spew gibberish that lowered the office of the governor and insult the sensibilities of our people,” Ekeoma said.

He further said that it was unfortunate that these individuals resorted to “a strategy of deceit and destabilisation” to hinder the progress of Abia.

“They should be exposed and punished for choosing the perfidious path that seeks to advance their selfish interest against the genuine interest of millions of innocent Abia citizens,” Ekeoma said.

Why Tinubu appointed new management team for CBN – Aide

Sen. Abdullahi Gumel, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), says the appointment of a new management team for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is to rejig the bank and make it alive to its responsibilities.

Gumel said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said that the appointment of the team by President Bola Tinubu was part of efforts to rescue the Nigerian economy from its challenges.

“The CBN’s image was badly battered, so this team that has come on board is a rescue team.

“They have come to rescue the image of the CBN.

“In fact, it is not only Nigerians that are waiting for the CBN’s new management to be up and running but the ECOWAS sub-region and the African Union(AU).

“They are waiting for Nigeria to get back the economy so that everybody will feel secure and happy,” he said.

Gumel lauded the Senate for confirming the appointment of Mr Olayemi Cardoso as the CBN Governor and his team on the first day of its plenary after recess.

“The screening was successful as robust questions bothering on the economy were asked.

“The lawmakers told the CBN governor and the deputy governors the feelings of Nigerians and what they talked to the team about is reflective of what Nigerians feel about the CBN,” he said.

Gumel expressed optimism that other appointees of the President would be screened and confirmed soon by the Senate.

“Today is a public holiday but we are in the office to receive CVs.

“We are also expecting the list of about three ministerial nominees from Kaduna, Kwara and Ondo states.

“In the spirit of Maulud, I am using this medium to call on Nigerians irrespective of religious belief to know that we do not have any other country but Nigeria.

“We are all brothers and sisters irrespective our religious beliefs. God does not make mistakes,” he said.

Gumel added: “If he wanted all Nigerians to be either Muslims or Christians it will be so but in his wisdom he decided to have us all in one country.

“So, we should be patient with one another and accommodative in order to take Nigeria to the promised land in the spirit of renewed hope.”

Police arrest 3 suspects over alleged killing of Senator Adeola’s aide

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr Idowu Owohunwa, on Monday announced the arrest of three suspects, who allegedly robbed and killed Mr Sanni Adeniyi, an Aide to Senator Solomon Yayi.

Owohunwa told newsmen at the command’s headquarters, Ikeja , that the suspects were arrested in Lagos and Oyo States respectively.

Recall that on Aug. 5,  the lawmaker representing Ogun West, Sen. Solomon Yayi, in a statement by his media aide, Mr Kayode Odunaro, alleged that some soldiers killed his aide, Sanni Adeniyi Sanni.

The police boss in Lagos, however, said that the suspects were not members of the Nigerian Army, stressing that they were armed robbers, who had served various jail terms before and were connected together while at the Correctional Centres in Lagos and Ibadan.

“We present to you today three suspects behind the killing of Mr Sanni Adeniyi, which occurred between 1.00 a.m. and 2.00 a.m. on Aug. 5.

“The arrest of the suspects, one Fred Okunnu, aged 43, Lucky Micheal, aged 33 and Adedigba Segun, aged 26, follows weeks of painstaking, diligent and discreet intelligence and investigative sets of actions.

“Items recovered from the suspects are one Brownie pistol with three rounds of live ammunition, one Beretta pistol with three rounds of live ammunition one locally made cut-to-size pistol with six live cartridges and six expended cartridges,” he said.

The commissioner said they also recovered military gear (military camouflage vest, military jungle hat, military holster, jungle boots), and one Red Honda CRV, with Reg. No. EKY 276 JD allegedly hijacked from a yet to be identified victim.

Owohunwa noted that Investigation has revealed that the gang was being armed by one Alhaji (based in Benin Republic), who specializes in robbing motorists of their unregistered vehicles.

He said that the gang have been successful in five previous operations, stressing that their modus operandi includes stationing one gang member some meters from Berger bus stop, a boundary between Lagos State and Ogun, to spot unregistered vehicles.

According to the CP, the spotter then calls his gang members, who are dressed in military attire and stationed somewhere around Berger bus stop, to inform them of the approaching vehicle.

“Once they stop their victim, they request for the vehicle custom papers, as they would need to clear security and customs checks. In this incident, after seeing the papers, they insisted on taking their victim to their base.

“Once they entered the vehicle, it dawned on Mr Sanni Adeniyi that they were robbers. He called out for help, which made the robbers shoot him thrice and further stabbed him.

“They dropped his corpse by the roadside and drove to Kuto, Abeokuta, where they cleaned up the blood stains in the rear seats of the vehicle and later same night proceeded with the vehicle to the border town of Chikanda in Kwara State,  where the criminal receiver, one Alhaji took delivery of the car,” he explained.

Owohunwa further said that the suspects adopted the use of military attire to beat security checkpoints.

The police boss pointed out that further investigations revealed that the said Alhaji has other cells operating across the country, stressing that as transnational crime, the command was involving the Interpol for the apprehension of this criminal receiver and financier.
