US Representative Jackie Walorski and two of her staffers were killed in a car crash on Wednesday.

    Walorski, a Republican from Indiana’s 2nd district was 58.

The White House said it will fly flags at half-staff on Wednesday and Thursday in memory of Walorski.

According to the news stations, Ms Walorski’s vehicle was struck head-on by a driver who crossed over into oncoming traffic; the driver of that vehicle died as well.

President Joe Biden offered his condolences in a statement Wednesday, saying that he and first lady Jill Biden were “shocked and saddened” when they heard about the car crash.

“Jill and I are shocked and saddened by the death of Congresswoman Jackie Walorski of Indiana along with two members of her staff in a car accident today in Indiana. Born in her beloved South Bend as the daughter of a meat-cutter and firefighter, she spent a lifetime serving the community that she grew up in – as a journalist, a nonprofit director, a state legislator, and eventually as a Member of Congress for the past nine and half years,” said Mr Biden.

“We send our deepest condolences to her husband, Dean, to the families of her staff members, Zachery Potts and Emma Thomson, who lost their lives in public service, and to the people of Indiana’s Second District who lost a representative who was one of their own,” added the president.

  • DSS releases last two Igboho aides after 114 days in custody

DSS releases last two Igboho aides after 114 days in custody

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released the last two aides of embattled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, from its custody.

Those released include Jamiu Noah Oyetunji and Amudat Habibat Babatunde (Lady K) who were held back in detention earlier in September when their colleagues were released.

Speaking on the latest development regarding the case, lead counsel to the Igboho’s aides – Pelumi Olajengbesi stated that the matter is still a subject of litigation.

He added that no further comments regarding the issue will be made for the time being.

In July, the DSS carried out a midnight raid of Igboho’s Soka house in Ibadan, Oyo State, and arrested 12 of the activist’s allies, whisking them away to Abuja, where they were kept in detention.

After a brief legal tussle in August, the DSS released 8 of the aides and then another 2 were released in September.

Those earlier released were Abideen Shittu, Abdullateef Onaolapo, Ayobami Donald, Olakunle Oluwapelumi, Dikeola Ademola, Bamidele Sunday, Raji Kazeem, Taiwo Tajudeen, Tajudeen Rinloye and Uthman Adelabu.

The DSS had been ordered by Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court, Abuja on August 4, to release all 12 detained associates of Igboho, however, the secret police kept two in their custody.

Igboho’s aides sue DSS, demand N100m compensation

The 12 associates of Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, have instituted a rights enforcement suit against the Department of State Services (DSS) for being paraded on the media as criminals.

They filed the suit on Wednesday before Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court who presided as a vacation judge while the court is on recess.

In the suit, Igboho’s associates sought a declaration of the court that their detention beyond 48 hours and their media parade without a court conviction constituted a breach of their fundamental rights.

They also sought an order of perpetual injunction restraining the DSS from interfering with their personal liberty and freedom of expression.

Similarly, the applicants prayed for an order granting the sum of N100 million for aggravated and exemplary damages against the security outfit for what they termed a serial breach of their constitutional rights.

But the DSS lawyer, Idowu Awo, told Justice Egwuatu during the proceedings that his case file was stolen from a member of the legal team who was meant to bring it to the court.

According to him, his colleague in question boarded a vehicle on Tuesday belonging to criminal elements, known as ‘one chance’, to whom she lost her personal belongings and the case file.

With the annual recess of the court ending soon, Justice Egwuatu ruled that the file of the fundamental rights suit be returned to the registry for reassignment to the regular court.

BREAKING: DSS releases eight of Igboho’s aides, four still detained

The Department of State Security Services has released 8 of activist, Sunday Igboho’s aides after detaining them for 61 days.

According to reports, the aides were released to their lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi on Monday.

However, Four of them were not released as the DSS claimed that they played a big role in stockpiling arms and participated in other alleged criminal activities of Igboho.

Olajengbesi, who addressed the press shortly after their release disclosed that the security agency must release the other 4 that are still in detention because they had been granted bail by the court.

He also thundered that the DSS must account for the two associates of Igboho killed during the bloody raid of July 1, 2021. It can be recalled that DSS operatives stormed Igboho’s soka, Ibadan residence killing two people and recovering several arms and ammunition.

Igboho was declared wanted shortly after by the agency. Unfortunately, the activist was arrested in benin Republic alongside his wife as he attempted to flee to Germany.

However, on August 4th Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja granted bail to the 12 detained aides of the separatist leader. This order was not complied with until today.

  • Court says judge available to release Igboho’s aides

Court says judge available to release Igboho’s aides

The Federal High Court, Abuja, says there is a judge on ground to sign the warrant of release of Sunday Igboho’s aides who were admitted to bail recently by the court.

Chief Registrar of the court, Mr Emmanuel Gakko, gave the clarification in a statement on Wednesday.

Gakko said that Justice Obiora Egwuatu, who admitted the 12 detaineess to bail early in August did not disappear as reported by some media publications.

The chief registrar said that contrary to the claim by the media, Justice Egwuatu did not disappear but rather traveled on a national assignment outside the country.

He stated that although the court is on vacation, there are judges on ground, including Justice Ahmed Mohammed, the other vacation judge.

He said that the lawyer to the detainees ought to have met with the registrar of the court, who would have told him what to do.

He stressed that there was no reason why a judge, after granting bail to a defendant, would disappear and not be available to endorse it.

He enjoined the media never to hesitate to approach the court to seek clarification on issues concerning the court.

The 12 detained aides were arrested on July 1, following a raid on the residence of Igboho, leader of the Yoruba Nation agitators, in Ibadan and were detained at the facility of the Department of State Service (DSS).

They were, however, admitted to bail by the court following the granting of an application for the enforcement of their fundamental rights.

Eight of the detainees were granted bail in the sum of N5 million each with two sureties in like sum, while the remaining four were admitted to bail in the sum of N10 million each with two sureties in like sum.

Their counsel, Mr Pelumi Olajengbesi, however, claimed that after the perfection of their bail conditions, they had gone to the court for endorsement of the release warrant but were told that the judge had traveled out of the country.
