“Big Brother has accorded two evicted housemates the opportunity to return to the show and play for the money.

  • Airline operators fault minister’s claim of N516bn indebtedness

Nigerian airline operators have faulted the claim by the Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika, that they were indebted to aviation agencies and other firms to the tune of N516 billion.

The Chairman of Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) , Capt. Nogie Meggisson, told newsmen in Lagos on Sunday that the minister’s claims were unverified.

Sirika reportedly said that Nigerian airlines were ridden with debts, weak and unable to compete and take advantage of the newly inaugurated Single Africa Air Transport Market (SAATM).

Meggison, however, said that the minister was reeling out figures offhand, stressing that he could not prove any of the debts he mentioned.

The AON chairman said that Nigerian aviation agencies lacked the ability to transparently record their revenues and document accurately the debts owed them by the airlines.

Meggisson said :“We have always asked them to list the debts. It is easy to call numbers. Let those we owe bring their bills and explain the debts.

“Although government cannot be held responsible for the operation of privately owned airlines, but the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) is competing with airlines, running two airlines with tax payers’ funds.

“So we don’t have a level playing ground because AMCON is a competitor, using the taxes we pay to compete with us. When are they going to leave the airline industry?”

He said accruing of debts was normal in the aviation industry because airline operations was a continuous business and the debts were usually settled between airlines and service providers from time to time.

“Talking about debts, airline business is not a cash business. ‎You accrue the charges, you are presented a bill and you pay.

“There is no airline in this world that does not owe,” Meggison said.

On SAATM, the AON chairman urged the Africa Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) to provide a level playing field by ensuring uniform charges by signatory countries.

According to him, an airline in Nigeria borrows money at 24 per cent interest rate, pay five per cent to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and also five per cent Value Added Tax (VAT).

He said these charges are however, waived by government of other countries for their own airlines.

  • FG threatens to revoke Port Harcourt International Airport contract

Sen. Hadi Sirika, Minister for State, Aviation says the Federal Government may revoke the remodelling contract of the domestic wing, Port Harcourt International Airport due to slow pace of work by the contractor.

Sirika made this know to newsmen during an inspection of ongoing construction at the Port Harcourt International Airport on Tuesday.

He said that work on the arrival terminal of the domestic wing of the airport, being handled by INTER-BAU Construction Ltd., had suffered prolonged delay since inception in 2012.

Sirika lamented that in spite of all the contract variations that the company had enjoyed from the past and present administrations, it was yet to deliver on the project.

“Unfortunately, this contract was awarded in 2012 and since then the contractor has taken his own speed on delivery.

“ In line with the thinking of President Buhari, we had no option than continue with him since he has a legitimate extension and variation approval.

“Since government is a continuum, we decided to pursue this procurement vigorously,” he said.

The minister explained that there was need to ensure quick delivery on the project to enhance economic activities at the airport.

“Federal Government cannot continue to neglect Port Harcourt in terms of airport facilities, as it is one of the most important cities in the country, where our economy is being hatched.

“Unfortunately, this contractor is quite difficult; I’m totally disappointed at his slow pace of work and services,” he said.

The minister also disclosed his efforts to ensure possible completion of the project by effecting some variation approvals for the contractor.

“As a Minister for State Aviation, I had invited the contractor severally to my office to chart a way forward and I had also approved some variations for him.

“I also made it clear to him that there would be no more variation going forward until this project is delivered.

“We gave him time lines but he is not adhering to the time lines; I’m constrained to take drastic legal action against him when I leave here,” he declared.

“The VIP lounge has also been renovated to enhance passenger comfort, the carousels are working optimally, amidst other facilities upgrade currently ongoing.

“The stories are similar at all other airports, as the authority has put in place facilities, procedures and systems to ensure maximum comfort, safety and security of airport users during this season and beyond.”

Yakubu, however, advised passengers to get to the airports early to conclude all check-in procedures in good time, in order to avoid the experience of missing their flights.

“This is important because of the heavy passenger traffic that is usually the experience around this time and the ongoing construction work by the Lagos State Government on Airport Road, Lagos,’’ she added.

According to him, the airline will still be flying to the Enugu Airport during the period as its morning flights will not be affected by the partial closure of the runway.

“Our morning flights will not be affected, but our 2.00 p.m flight may be affected, especially when there is some slight delays.

“We don’t want to take chances and apart from the morning flights; other flights will go to either Owerri or Port Harcourt.

“We have advised our passengers who have already booked flights to reschedule for free, no matter the fare differences,’’ Iwarah said.

  • Heathrow airport faces flight delays, cancellations over heavy snowfall

A number of flights were delayed and cancelled at the Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom over a heavy snowfall, the airport’s press service said in a statement.

“Heathrow Airport remains open. However, we regret that weather conditions across the UK are resulting in some passengers experiencing disruption to their travel arrangements.

“Airlines are responsible for ensuring their flights are fully de-iced before they are operated, and this is resulting in some delays and cancellations,” the airport management said.

The press service also called on passengers to check status of flights before coming to the airport.

According to the BBC broadcaster the heavy snow also resulted in power cuts as well as disruption of rail and road travel across the United Kingdom.
