Soludo renames Anambra Cargo Airport after Chinua Achebe

Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, has renamed the state’s International Passenger and Cargo Airport after late Chinua Achebe, a novelist, to immortalise him for making an indelible mark on the history of human civilisation.

Achebe a native of Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, died on March 21, 2013, at age 82, in Boston, Massachusetts.

Soludo said this on Sunday in Awka at the Independence Day parade, to mark Nigeria’s 63rd anniversary, describing Achebe as an example of Africa’s unsung hero.

“Achebe, a Nigerian novelist, poet, and critic, gave the African literature an identity and a voice and he rightly reconstructed and refined the identify of the people,” he said.

The governor said that Achebe was not just an Anambra hero nor a Nigerian hero, but an African and global hero and yet largely unsung at home.

He said that henceforth, the state shall be deliberate in fishing out and celebrating its largely unsung heroes as motivation to children and youths.

“Unfortunately, some people wrongly think of legacies in terms of brick and mortar. Legacy is about impact on human life and human civilisation.

“Achebe was not a president or governor or military. He did not build bridges or roads or airports but he will outlive most presidents, governors and ministers in our minds.

“Achebe rejected Nigeria’s national honours twice in protest against what he perceived as injustice to his home state Anambra. Today, Anambra will finally honour him.

“After wide consultations, there is a broad consensus that no one is more deserving to be named after the first airport in Anambra than Anambra’s all-time greatest literary gift to the world, Chinua Achebe.

“Consequently, we will rename the Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport, Umueri, to Chinua Achebe International Airport, Umueri.

“Yes, it has to be an international airport, and we hope to work with the Federal Government to give full effect to its international status,” he said.
Soludo urged Nigerians to be intentional about making the project Nigeria work and believe in the potential greatness of the country.

“We have muddled through the past 63 years with squandered opportunities and yet with the promise of potential greatness

“No country or nation is a perfect. Every nation continues to struggle in its match to a more perfect union. The path to stability, growth and sustainability will be challenging as there are no quick fixes.

“But all of us must collectively think and work Nigeria out of the current challenges. We have no other country but Nigeria, and we must make it to work for everyone, “he said.

The governor said his administration was founded on the true progressive agenda and would continue to create the enabling environment for residents to thrive and survive.

The police, paramilitary organisations and students from different schools took part in the parade.

  • Abuja Airport: FCTA to pay N825.8m compensation for construction of 2nd runway – Wike

Abuja Airport: FCTA to pay N825.8m compensation for construction of 2nd runway – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Mr Nyesom Wike, says the FCT Administration (FCTA) will pay N825.8 million as compensation for the construction of second runway for Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Wike stated this in Abuja on Tuesday, while briefing newsmen at the end of a closed-door meeting with members of the Jiwa community and other stakeholders.

He said that the amount would be paid through the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) for compensation and resettlement of the people of the community affected by the project.

He added that as part of the incentive, 12 people from the community would be employed by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and its agencies and 10 by FCTA.

He added that the government would also construct the Tunga Madaki bridge along with a five-kilometre road from the bridge to the community for easy movement of the people.

The minister explained that the project would be captured in the 2024 budget of the FCTA.

Wike also said that FCTA would equally provide a modern health facility to provide quality health care services for people of the community.

He said that an undertaking would be signed based on the agreement between the government and the community.

He identified the signatories as the permanent secretaries of FCTA and ministry of aviation, the Chief of Jiwa, the Chairman, Abuja Municipal Council and the Commissioner, Public Complaint Commission.

“If that is done today, and tomorrow or next tomorrow the money is paid to them, contractors will no longer delay. They have to move to the site immediately and commence work.

“So, the second runway has come to stay,” he said.

He said that the current administration was determined to ensure that the second runway was delivered.

He commended the Chief of Jiwa, Alhaji Isa Idris, for mobilising his people to attend the meeting to resolve the crises.

His counterpart, Mr Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, said that he met the issue on his table, adding that the project ought to have been delivered in July.

Keyamo said that the contractors could not be mobilised because of the issue of compensation.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, FCTA, Mr Olusade Adesola, said that the completion of the project requires the support of all relevant stakeholders.

Adesola commended Wike for the intervention to ensure a quick resolution of the issue.

Dr Emmanuel Meribole, Permanent Secretary, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, said that the project was approved by the Federal Executive Council in March 2022.

Meribole said that the project was awarded to four contractors in April, with CCECC Nigeria Limited as the major contractor.

He, however, said that the project was stalled because of the disagreement over compensation to the affected community members.

Earlier, the Chief of Jiwa, said that the ministry of aviation through its consultant had earlier pegged the compensation at N2.5 million per hectare, for the 12,000 hectares allocated for the project.

Idris further said that the amount was later reviewed downward to N700,000 per hectare when FCTA took over the discussion as the rightful authority to determine how much compensation to be paid.

He said that the community took the matter to the Public Complaint Commission with a view to resolve the issue amicably.

The community leader said that his people were concerned that the N700,000 being offered per hectare would not be enough for the affected persons to acquire another land.

  • Reps suspend concession of Nigerian Airports

Reps suspend concession of Nigerian Airports

The House of Representatives has resolved to suspend the concession of airports in Nigeria

This resolution was sequel to a motion promoted by Rep. Kama Nkemkanma on the “Need to Investigate the Concession of Airports in Nigeria”, on Wednesday at plenary.

In his submission, Rep Nkemanma noted that the most viable airports in Nigeria were commissioned to foreign firms through resolutions by the Federal Executive Council resolutions deviating from due process, public accountability, and established laws of the land.

According to the lawmaker, the eventual outcome of the opaque concession exercise is the enrichment of a few unpatriotic Nigerians and their foreign cohorts at the detriment of Nigerians and the eventual enslavement of these public infrastructures to foreigners for many decades.

He recalled: “that our major airports in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano have remained by consistently subjects of controversies due to entrenched personal interests that have undermined the laws of the land, irrespective of the occasional efforts of our anti-corruption agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission”.

” That the myopic personal interests of these economic vampires have relegated our so called international airports to mere airstrip status after almost seven decades in the industry, and can never be compared with global renowned airports such as Heathrow, Dubai, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Qatar, Vancouver, and others.

“Disturbed that even on the African continent, where one out of every six Africans is a Nigerian population -wise, the South African pairs of Tambo-Johannesburg and Cape Town, Cairo,
    Casablanca-Morocco and Houari Boumediene in Algeria, have all outpaced Nigeria and we also lag behind South Africa, Kenya, and Ethiopian Airlines;
Worried that our national historical public policy journey from indigenization, Commercialisation, Privatisation, Public partnerships, concessions, and others has fetched us nothing rather than
    monumental embarrassment, massive corruption, and controversies in the Aviation and other sectors;

    “Disturbed that Nigerian population dominates the African Continent, with South African cities outperforming Nigerian owed, while Kenya and Ethiopian Airlines trail behind;
    Worried that the National public policy journey has led to embarrassment, corruption, and controversies in aviation and other sectors;

“Aware that the National Assembly Acts regulate, control, and manage corporations and agencies, including the Federal Airports Authority Act, Infrastructure Concession and Regulatory Commission Act, Public Procurement Act, and Fiscal Responsibility Act”.

Rep. Nkemakonam states that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), empowers the National Assembly to control the economy, ensuring social justice, equality, and opportunity for citizens.

According to him, Nigerians are currently facing job loss and future generation’s economic hardship due to the airport concession policy.

“And that the constitutional oversight role of this House involves exposing corruption, inefficiency and waste in laws and correcting defects as per 1999 Constitution of Nigeria”, he added.

The House unanimously adopted the motion and mandated the House Committee on Aviation (when constituted) to investigate the Nigerian Airport concessions and report back to the house for further legislative action.

  • FAAN reads riot act to illegal occupants of airport land

FAAN reads riot act to illegal occupants of airport land

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has advised all illegal occupants of airport lands to relocate for their safety and security.

Mrs Faithful Hope-Ivbaze, Acting General Manager, Corporate Affairs, FAAN, made this known in a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday.

Hope-Ivbaze said the removal of illegal structures would be carried out at all other airports that have similar challenges.

She said the notification was in respect to the recent demolition of 13 houses which posed danger to the operations of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

She revealed that in 2020, the organisation noticed some encroachments within its acquired land in Lagos and a committee was set up to investigate and compel encroachers to desist from such actions.

“In the committee’s report submitted in 2022, out of 254 buildings evaluated, 220 buildings were recommended for regularisation, asthey pose no direct/critical security and safety challenges to the Airport. They have been duly regualarised.

“The 34 others that were built within FAAN’s perimeter fence and mostly erected above the aviation fuel pipeline and waterways, clearly posing direct safety and security challenges to the Airport as well as to their owners/ occupants themselves, were marked for demolition,” she said.

Hope-Ivbaze said the occupants of the buildings were duly notified of the impending demolition by intensive awareness campaign through “stop work” markings and planting of notice boards within the Red Zone.

The general manager said a committee put up “Caveat Emptors” and positioned them strategically within the areas under encroachment

She said that publications were done in national dailies and local radio stations, notifying people of the risks in purchasing and building on Restricted Aviation Land.

She noted that such building was without consideration of the dangers on aircraft operations and the building occupants.

“To avoid a situation of wanton damage and colossal losses, the present administration, on assuming office, inaugurated a “Regularization Committee on FAAN Encroached Lands and Property.

“The committee was charged with finding ways of identifying and regularizing only those properties located in positions that do not pose a direct and critical challenges to airport safety and security.

“The FAAN directorates of Airport Operations and Aviation Security commenced stakeholders’ engagements and met severally with the residents of the Ajao axis in which all meetings recorded and filed.

“The meeting brought to their knowledge the dangers of erecting houses on pipelines, waterways and the airport’s perimeter fence blocking access for security patrols.

“Most of the residents cooperated, except for the few who ignored and continued erecting their structures in the red zones,” she said.

The general manager said it was imperative to note that area of land presently housing the Lagos Airport was acquired for public use by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

She said the land was acquired through the Lands Acquisition Ordinance by FGN Official Gazettes in 1944, 1972, and 1975 respectively.

Hope-Ivbaze reiterated FAAN’s commitment to adhere to its core values of safety, security and comfort.

  • Assembly members forfeited 3-years constituency project funds for Ebonyi Airport – Umahi

Assembly members forfeited 3-years constituency project funds for Ebonyi Airport – Umahi

Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi says that members of the state House of Assembly forfeited their three-year constituency project funds for the completion of the state’s new international airport.

Umahi made the disclosure during the test-run of flight operations at the airport christened Muhammadu Buhari international airport, at Onueke on Thursday.

The governor stated that the assembly led by its Speaker, Chief Francis Nwifuru, made tremendous sacrifices for the actualisation of the airport, which he said cost N36 billion.

“When we were seeking N10 billion to procure equipment for the airport, the speaker recalled the members who were on recess to approve the fund.

“The members did not only approve the fund, they also forfeited their three-years constituency project funds to ensure the project is completed,” he said.

He also expressed profound appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for his ‘unquantified’ support towards the realisation of the airport.

“The president approved the sum of N10 billion for the construction of the domestic and international wings of the airport.

“When we were constrained on funds to procure equipment, he directed the ministry of finance to source funds for us even if it is a loan.

“The airport is named after Buhari as approved by the state house of assembly and if you say he is not good to you, he is to me and Ebonyi.

“We will continue loving him and before a fortnight, he will be in Ebonyi to inaugurate the project,” he said.

He noted that the government would prevail on the federal government to take over the airport which had presently created over 500 jobs and concession it.

“Government is a poor manager of resources but we are seriously interested in the revenue generated from the facility,” he said.

Mr Oladipo Adebayo, a Representative of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority called on Ebonyi people to ensure the maintenance and protection of the airport’s facilities because it has “opened them to the world”.

Chief Francis Nwifuru, Speaker of the state House of Assembly thanked God for the project and Umahi for his commitment towards actualising the project.

Nwifuru, who is the state’s Governor-elect said that the governor had put him under severe pressure due to the monumental projects that he would inherit and maintain.

Mr Collins Oti, a Representative of Air Peace airlines, which two aircraft landed at the airport, urged  the state’s incoming administration to fully maximise the airport’s potentials.

Goodwill messages were delivered at the occasion by the immediate past state Governor, Chief Martin Elechi, representatives of the clergy, traditional institution among others.
