The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to set up magistrate courts at airports nationwide to prosecute touts and address the growing issue of harassment at Nigerian airports.

The meeting aimed to update stakeholders on recent airport developments, share the management’s strategic goals, and explore ways to enhance passenger experience and facilitation.

This move comes after Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo promised in May 2024 to eliminate touting from Nigerian airports. In 2022, FAAN arrested 90 touts, indicating a persistent problem.

    Development traced to Microsoft

Meanwhile, the development has been traced to Virtual Machines running on Microsoft Windows that are running the CrowdStrike Falcon agent.

Microsoft said it is aware of the issue and that though it is an external dependency, it is currently being investigated.

“We experienced a Storage incident  in Central US which had downstream impact to a number of Azure services.

“This is currently mitigated, however we are still in the process of validating recovery to a small percentage of those downstream services.

“This was communicated to affected customers via the Service Health dashboard in the Azure portal.

“We are also aware of an issue impacting Virtual Machines running Windows, running the CrowdStrike Falcon agent, which may encounter a bug check (BSOD) and get stuck in a restarting state.

“While this is an external dependency, we are currently investigating potential options for Azure customers to mitigate and will be providing updates via the status page here: azure.status.microsoft/en-gb/status/ as well as our Azure portal, where possible,” Microsoft stated.

Meanwhile, according to George Kurtz, President & CEO of CrowdStrike, the issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed.

“CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted.

“This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed.

“We refer customers to the support portal for the latest updates and will continue to provide complete and continuous updates on our website.

“We further recommend organizations ensure they’re communicating with CrowdStrike representatives through official channels.

“Our team is fully mobilized to ensure the security and stability of CrowdStrike customers,” Kurtz stated.

ASUU/FG Faceoff: NANS threatens shutdown of major airports

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone D, on Monday threatened to shutdown major airports if the face-off between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government continued.

NANS South West Zone Coordinator, Mr Adegboye Olatunji, made this known in Abuja on Monday, at a protest to All Progressive Congress (APC) Secretariat in solidarity with Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun to run for second term.

Olatunji said that it was time both parties came together to resolve the issues leading to the strike as students were at the receiving end.

“We are planning to block government organisations that generate money for them if the ASUU issue is not resolved.

“We have been protesting on this issue by occupying major roads in the South West but we believe if we ground airports, the government will do something about the strike,” he said.

Olantunji said that the student body had dissociated itself from Abiodun’s prosecution and disqualification from contesting 2023 elections.

He said Abiodun’s education policy remained enviable in the South West region because his coming on board had helped in the resuscitation of some tertiary institutions in the state.

“Their call for prosecution and disqualification of Gov. Abiodun from running for second time in office through their petition to the EFCC copied to the National Chairman of the APC is nothing but ruse that cannot stand the test of time.

“We wish to advise them and their sponsors of this unwarranted political venture to follow the right channels through legal means to prove their allegations as their claims are nothing but figment of imagination.

“As students’ leaders from South West, we can state unequivocally that the way and manner Abiodun is conducting the affairs of Ogun has hitherto improved the standard of living of all residents in the State.

“And of great concern to us as students is the improvement in the standard of education in Ogun State. His adherence to rule of law in managing the affairs of the state is highly remarkable to us as young people,” he said.

Olatunji, however, said that the student body passed a vote of confidence on the governor for his commitment and sacrifices toward education development in the state.

Also speaking on the alleged N80 billion fraud by the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr Ahmed Idris, NANS Joint Campus Committee (JCC) Chairman, Mr Damilola Kehinde said the alleged fraud was a slap on the integrity of the country when students were at home due to the ASUU strike.

Kehinde said that the educational sector was suffering as the country was not able to implement the UN recommendation of 26 per cent budget on education.

“We have been at the forefront of the ASUU struggle ever since it commenced, we have shut down most of the federal roads in south west agitating that the Federal Government listen to the plight of ASUU.

“We have not kept our sword in fighting for the lecturers and the generality of the students.

“If government officials or politicians can upgrade themselves every three months spending billions of naira for wardrobe allowances, I don’t think it is wrong to also equip our academics.

“What ASUU is clamouring for is not up to what a single person is embezzling. I think it is high time government has to rise by using some of these persons as deterrent to others,” he said.

Inscription such as ‘Moving Ogun Forward’, we need Dapo Abiodun, Dapo Abiodun, a silent achiever, Dapo Abiodun, the people’s choice’, among others were written on the placard during the protest.

COVID-19: Funny bone berates absence of testing facilities at Nigerian airports

Popular comedian, Stanley Chibuna, popularly known as Funny Bone, on Monday criticized the absence of COVID-19 testing facilities at Nigerian airports.

The entertainer took to his Instagram page, comparing Nigeria with Ghana, as regards each country’s reaction to COVID-19.

He wrote, “Ghana had their borders secured right from day one. You need a negative COVID-19 test to fly to Accra and upon your arrival, you will be tested again before you are allowed entry.

“Now this is small Ghana. But our airports both Abuja and Lagos don’t have the facilities to test you at the airports upon arrival despite the billions allocated for COVID-19. Please who are we fooling? Red list is our potion.”

He added, “Meanwhile, most persons in Lagos now are either down with cough, catarrh or sore throat plus fever and body weakness. Have you caught the bug yet?”

TheNewsGuru recalls that United Kingdom has earlier placed Nigeria on a red list following the outbreak of the COVID-19 omicron variant.

ONSA clears air on notice of attacks to airports nationwide

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) on Thursday assured members of the public that there is no threat to the nation’s airports.

It said it only sent an advisory to security agencies to liaise with airport management to upgrade existing security measures at the nation’s airports.

ONSA described the advisory as a “routine threat assessment” to ensure the preparedness of all relevant agencies.

The clarifications were made in a statement by the Head of Strategic Communication in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), Mr. Z.M. Usman.

The leakage of the advisory to all security agencies on Thursday caused panic in all airports among aviation workers and air travellers.

But ONSA reassured the public and all aviation stakeholders of the safety of the nation’s airports.

The statement said: “The attention of the Office of the National Security Adviser has been drawn to reports of a threat to the nation’s airports from an internal government correspondence.

“The correspondence was a routine threat assessment to ensure the preparedness of agencies and not meant for public dissemination.

“In the period covered by the correspondence, threat analysis identified the need to advise airports’ management nationwide to upgrade existing security measures around the nation’s airports.

“Regrettably, the unauthorised release of this advisory is likely to raise fear among airport users home and abroad.

“Accordingly, this statement is issued to reassure the public and all aviation stakeholders of the safety of our airports.

“The security and intelligence services will continue to monitor security threats and provide the assessment and timely advice required by airports’ management to continuously upgrade security measures in the airports.”
