No First Lady has captured Nigerians’ imagination like Aisha Buhari – Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has stated that in Nigeria’s history, no First Lady has captured Nigerians’ imagination as profoundly as wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Mrs Aisha Buhari.

Osinbajo disclosed this during the launch of a book titled ‘Aisha Buhari: Being Different’, written by Hajo Sani, at the Presidential Villa on Thursday.

According to him, while her views were sometimes controversial, she has established an ongoing conversation with the Nigerian people.

He said: “Dr. Hajo Sani has written a most engaging book on an incredibly fascinating person, Her Excellency Aisha Buhari, Nigeria’s First Lady.

“It’s unlikely that any First Lady in Nigeria’s history has, in such a few short years, captured the imagination of Nigerians as profoundly as Aisha Buhari.

“She’s, of course, the first First Lady to be on Twitter, on Instagram, and other social media platforms, getting her unfiltered views across to the Nigerian people and she’s probably the first to receive, in real time, the opinions of Nigerians on her views.

“With her views, forthright, crisp, truthful and once in a while controversial, she has established an ongoing conversation with the Nigerian people. The issues that concern them most, the issues that concern us the most, good governance, security, putting food on the table.

“The education of our children, prompt payment of pensions to army veterans, drug abuse, the violation and victimisation of women and every once in a while she airs her own personal struggles, her annoyance, in a manner, probably unprecedented in the role of the First Lady anywhere,” Osinbajo said.

Stating that there is no question that Aisha Buhari was different, Osinbajo said her difference has been empowering for the Nigerian people and there was never any question that her comments come from a good place, a place of genuine love and respect for the Nigerian people and several concerns.

The vice president further stated that First Ladies may quickly fade into obscurity, when the curtains of time are drawn on the tenure of the administration of their husbands.

According to him, the result is that the records and lessons of consequence that could benefit oncoming generations and enrich our understanding of history are regrettably lost.

“But it’s unlikely that Aisha Buhari would ever be forgotten and even if there was a chance of this happening, this well written attempt to document her life and times and her contributions as First Lady to national life, through the causes that she has promoted, removes that possibility,” he added.

On his part, chairman of the occasion and All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, stated that with Aisha Buhari’s achievements, no one can reasonably question the role of a First Lady any longer.

Tinubu said the First Lady’s effort also contributed to President Buhari’s electoral victory in 2015.

He said: “Join me in congratulating the book’s author, Dr. Hajo Sani, for making this important contribution to our collective knowledge by highlighting the role the First Lady has played in our society.

“Given the First Lady’s achievements, no one can reasonably question the role of a First Lady any longer. Remember there were those who argued that the constitution does not assign an official role to the First Lady. Because of Dr. Mrs. Aisha Buhari, their concerns have been forever laid to rest.

“The First Lady has played an uplifting, unifying role both in symbol and substance. She has been a voice of conscience calling us to be our better selves for the good of the nation and for the betterment of the weakest, most vulnerable among us.

“As such she has been a strong pillar of support not only to the president but also to the Nigerian people whom they both serve with such patriotic commitment and high purpose.

“Because of the humility of the presidential couple, Mrs. Aisha Buhari chose not to be addressed as ‘First Lady’ at the beginning of this administration. However, this could not be sustained. Neither her role nor her individual capabilities could be downplayed very long,” he said.

Tinubu added that Aisha Buhari has truly shown herself to be the First Lady of Nigeria in title but also by virtue of her talent and temperament.

According to him, “the role of First Lady provides critical support to the public functioning of the presidency. The author thus must be commended not just for documenting the background, education, career, family and public life of Mrs. Buhari in an enjoyable, easily readable manner but also in narrating the political and constitutional context within which Mrs. Buhari has moulded the position of the First Lady in Nigeria.

He also stated that Aisha Buhari has a naturally strong connection with the average person because she speaks with sincerity and belief.

“We noticed this very early during the historic 2015 campaign. Thus, we convinced her to play a vocal and visible role in that groundbreaking campaign.

“Her efforts contributed to her husband’s success. She helped him make history during that campaign. Since coming to the office of the First Lady, she has not stopped making history.

“She has been an active and dedicated voice to those whom society sometimes forgets. She gives comfort to the broken and seeks relief for the destitute. No one can doubt her concern. And her care for the wellbeing of women, children and the powerless has established the standard for the office of the First Lady for years to come.

“Mrs. Buhari shows that a First Lady should not stand aloof and detached from what is happening in the country. Mrs. Buhari never shies from what she believes in. This makes her a reliable and true advisor to her beloved husband. No doubt that Mr. President’s administration has been enriched because of her active role and the teamwork that exists between husband and wife,” Tinubu said.

In his remarks, Ekiti State governor and chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), Kayode Fayemi, said if one is looking for the voice of the voiceless, defender of the defenders, candour and courage, there is no place to go but the direction of the First Lady.

He said sometimes that candour may appear in the manner of indiscretion but it has endeared the First Lady to a majority of Nigerians.

“We are proud of her and her convictions. I congratulate the First Lady for being different. She may not describe herself as her feminist but She is the ultimate feminist in Nigeria,” Fayemi said.

Among dignitaries present at the occasion were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr Boss Mustapha, represented by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), delivered the welcome remarks.

Other dignitaries included Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege; Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala through a recorded message; Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), and Dr Amina Muhammed through a recorded message.

Also present were the wife of the vice president, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo; former First Lady, Dr. Patience Jonathan; former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Pastor Godsday Orubebe; the Ooni of Ife Imperial Majesty, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Sa’ad Abubakar III; wife of former Vice President, Amina Sambo, and many more.

“I am sorry, Kayode, this is not part of what I was actually invited here to discuss in your studio.

“I will not be speaking on that because it is not part of what we agreed for me to come and discuss. So, let us leave that issue out of the interview please,” Abdullahi said.

Meanwhile, another aide to the First Lady, Kabiru Dodo in Jalingo, Taraba State capital same December 2020 while presenting some items to widows on behalf of the president’s wife, faulted the report that the first lady left the country because of rising insecurity.

As a mother, I’m worried about kidnappings of women, girls in Nigeria – Aisha Buhari

The first lady of Nigeria, Aisha Buhari, has urged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to bring an immediate end to the incessant spate of abductions of women and girls in the country.

“As a mother, I share the sorrow and agony of the victims and their families. I am also not unaware of the impact that these abductions could have in reverting many successes we have hitherto achieved, especially in terms of girl-child education and early marriages.

In a message to mark the 2021 International Women’s Day, the president’s wife called on all stakeholders to continue to exert their different levels of influence and bring an end to the kidnappings.

Her personally signed message which was titled “Message of the First Lady, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, on the occasion of the International Women’s Day 2021,” was published via Twitter on Monday.

It read, “Today marks the 2021 edition of International Women’s Day. The day offers yet another opportunity for humanity to review and reflect progress made on issues of women and girls.

“This year’s theme: Women In Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a COVID-19 World is a strong call to appreciate the efforts of women and girls in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

“COVID-19 has had a huge impact on women; disrupted education and careers, lost jobs, descent into poverty, and proliferation of domestic violence. Many have also died or suffered due to lack of access to basic information on the pandemic, It is therefore important, not just to continue spreading the message of the COVID-19 protocol, but to remember and support those who have been affected negatively by the pandemic in one way or another.

“Away from COVID-19, women and girls in Nigeria have continued to suffer abductions both in the hands of insurgents and bandits.

“As a mother, I share the sorrow and agony of the victims and their families. I am also not unaware of the impact that these abductions could have in reverting many successes we have hitherto achieved, especially in terms of girl-child education and early marriages.

“I call on all stakeholders to continue to exert their different levels of influence and bring these abductions to an end and to assure us that girls are safe anywhere they may find themselves.

“My best wishes to women all over the world for their resilience, hard work, and commitment to the progress of humanity. Happy International Women’s Day.”

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity (Office of the First Lady), Aliyu Abdullahi, on Tuesday refused to disclose Mrs Buhari’s whereabouts weeks after reports that she had relocated out of the presidential villa to Dubai for safety concerns.

Rather than respond to the question he was asked during his appearance on a monitored Channels Television programme on Tuesday night, he told the anchor (Kayode Okikiolu) that he was not invited to the show to discuss the privacy of the first lady.

“I will not be speaking on that because it is not part of what we agreed for me to come and discuss. So, let us leave that issue out of the interview please,” Abdullahi said.

In his response, the anchor informed the first lady’s aide that the news was already in the public domain and it was important to clear the air on the controversy trailing the issue.

He also told Abdullahi that the information he would provide would help Nigerians make informed discussions should the issue come up again.

The first lady’s aide, on his part, maintained his earlier position, insisting that Mrs Buhari was entitled to her private life.

He said, “Let me say it this way again, the first lady, although married to the President, nevertheless, she is a citizen of this country who is entitled to her own right to privacy.

“If she chooses not to speak on a particular subject at any point in time, she is entitled to her own right to privacy and that is where I wish to leave that issue as of now. That is her own right, and she did not choose to speak at this time.”

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that an online news platform had earlier reported that Mrs Buhari had moved to Dubai, United Arab Emirates about two weeks ago.

According to the report, the first lady left Nigeria in September after the wedding of her daughter and does not plan to return to the country anytime soon.

According to Mrs Buhari, “On our way back, the Nigerian Air Force Flight encountered a violent clear air turbulence which was navigated safely and professionally by the Captain and crew of the Flight.

She added, “I want to commend and appreciate the courage and professionalism of the Captain and his crew, the wonderful gallant servicemen and women of the entire Nigerian Air Force for their dedication to duty and the quality of maintenance of its fleet.

Speaking on the healthcare sector she said, “I recall hosting the private healthcare Providers earlier in the year and we had a very productive engagement where the issue of building the capacity of Nigeria health sector was the major focus, and funding was discovered to be the major challenge.

“I therefore call on the healthcare providers to take the advantage of the Federal Government’s initiative through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) guidelines for the operation of NGN100 Billion Credit Support for the Healthcare Sector as was released recently contained in a circular dated March 25, 2020 to the Commercial Banks. This will no doubt help in building and expanding the capacity of the Nigerian health sector and ultimately reduce medical trips and tourism outside the Country.

Once again, I thank our frontline workers, and all Nigerians for their steadfast(ness) as we navigate the challenges facing the entire world.”

Why I am a fan of Aisha Buhari – Fani-Kayode

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has said he is a fan of wife of Nigeria’s President, Aisha Buhari because she is the light of the Aso Rock Villa.

Fani-Kayode, in series of tweets, welcomed Aisha Buhari back home from Dubai where she had gone for medical treatment.

He said the first lady was unstoppable as God would continue to be with her, praying for her to stand strong.

Fani-Kayode added that those who believed that his compliment of Aisha Buhari meant that he might be nursing the ambition of defecting to the All Progressives Congress, APC, to think otherwise as that would never be.

“Welcome back home to our amiable First Lady, Aisha Buhari. I repeat, you are the light of the Villa. You are unstoppable and God is with you. Stand strong!

“To those who believe that this means I am going to APC, I say get a life and stop letting your imagination run wild. It means nothing of the sort.

“I have always been a fan of Aisha Buhari even though I am the resistance and I am opposed to her husband’s Government.

“Our First Lady came back home safely and soundly and in good health after going to Dubai and some say we shouldn’t wish her well and thank God for sparing her life and bringing her back safely simply because we are in the opposition? Some people can be so petty and wicked! May God help us,” he tweeted.
