MVP: Russian goalkeeper gets AK-47 as prize

Russian hockey goalkeeper Saveli Kononov was handed an AK-47 after inspiring his side Izhstal Izhevsk to a 3-2 victory against rivals Chelmet.

Kononov was awarded the assault rifle by the captain having been voted as player of the match by his team-mates.

This is the latest in a series of bizarre awards handed out by hockey teams, with many NHL sides making it a custom.

After stopping 36 shots and conceding just two goals, 23-year-old Kononov can be seen in the changing room as a club official brings the weapon in.

It is then handed to the captain, who officially makes the handover to Kononov.

Kononov joined the VHL side last season and has to date played 12 games for his new club.

It is assumed that When you are the goalie of your ice hockey team,it means you are in the firing line. Well for Saveli Kononov, it was just another day at the office when he saved 36 out of 38 shots for the Russian side Izhstal Izhevsk in their 3-2 win over Chelmet.

This is not the first time weird gifts have been handed out by an ice hockey side. NHL teams have awarded everything from barber shop capes and Broadway hats to a Abraham Lincoln costume.

Ice hockey is one of the most popular sports in Russia second only to football which maintains the top spot as the most popular sport.

Russia hosted the 2018 World cup with France emerging champions after defeating hard fighting Croatia 4-2 at the Luzhniki Stadium.

  • Gov. Yari offers N1m reward on every illegal AK 47 rifle

Gov. Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara on Thursday announced a reward of N1 million on every illegal AK 47 rifle returned to the state government.

The governor, who announced this at a news conference in Gusau, said the gesture had become necessary following the unabated increase in crime, especially abduction in the state.

He wondered why “in 2015, with just about 250 soldiers, the crime rate was low but with over 1,600 soldiers of different categories, we cannot contain crime in the state”.

He said with the proposed engagement of 8,500 youths as civilian task force, those involved would be better equipped in the fight against armed banditry, cattle rustling and kidnapping in the state.

He said that many of the youths that would be engaged would come from the rural areas where the crime rate was higher.

“I am confident that since the locals know the people in their surroundings, they will be quick in detecting any new comer or suspicious movement.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that armed bandits have continued to storm various communities in the state, especially at the rural areas where they kill, maim, abduct people and burn houses, shops and other properties.

The Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Ms Hadiza Usman, has commended the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Retired Col. Hameed Ali and his management team on seizure of 661 pump-action rifles.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that the Nigerian Customs had on January 30 intercepted a 40 ft container cleared to be containing steel doors but on close examination were loaded with 661 new pump-action rifles.

Usman gave the commendation in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday in Lagos by the Public Affairs Manager of NPA, Chief Michael Ajayi.

According to her, the authority is particularly impressed with the fact that the controversial 40 ft container manifested to be carrying steel doors had actually exited the port before it was timely intercepted somewhere around Mile 2, Lagos.

This remarkably is a proof that the Customs management has put in place, more than one layer of security arrangement to ensure that nothing dangerous actually escapes the eagle-eye of a Customs Service.

Without this interception, the authority would rather not want to imagine what could have happened to the peace, lives and properties of innocent Nigerians,” Ajayi said.

She, therefore, advised that the scope of investigation in respect of this deadly cargo should be broad and thorough.

The managing director also urged all the security agencies serving in the ports to be extra-vigilant, to avoid a re-occurrence of such totally prohibited cargo entering and exiting the port.

Usman, consequently, urged whistle blowers to avail themselves in future, of platforms already put in place by the Authority.

According to her, this would ensure timely presentation of information and intelligence needed to enable the authorities nip in the bud, such acts of illegality.

“Investigation has already commenced and I have directed that the drag net should be wide enough to fish out all persons involved in the importation and clearing of the consignment, ‘’ NAN quotes Alli as saying.
