  • Fresh FM demolition: Akande urges Ajimobi to bring compassion into governance

Prof Adeolu Akande ,a Gubernatorial aspirant in Oyo State called on the state Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, to allow compassion to guide his decision when dealing with matters that directly involved the people he governs.

Akande urged the governor to recall the promise he made to cater for the security and welfare of the people of the state when he was elected.

He said, “The primary responsibility of any government is to protect lives and property. The sacredness of private property is second in importance only to that of the preservation of life.

“The furore generated by the demolition of the property of Mr Yinka Ayefele must have demonstrated to the government by now that it was an unpopular decision. Government is about the people and not the anger and emotions of the people in government. The Yoruba capture this truism when they say, ‘Ogbon ni Oba n lo, Oba ki lo agidi’ (ruler rules with wisdom and not with stubbornness).

“The Ayefele saga has once again brought to the fore the need for Governor Ajimobi to rethink his government and review its personnel and focus, as he embarks on his home stretch so that history can be kind to him. As the pioneer Chief of Staff in the administration, I am pained to see that many of the lofty ideals that endeared the governor to the people in the early years have been abandoned and replaced with practices that can only wipe out the achievements of these early glorious years of his administration.”

Akande noted that many of the personnel who made him take controversial government decisions and actions claimed innocence in private conversations and never identified themselves with those decisions.

“I recall that the location of the Ayefele building was an issue when the dualisation of the Challenge-Toll Gate Road was conceived by the government about 2012 but the governor in his magnanimity directed that all government agencies involved must take measures to protect the building from demolition, even when some forces encouraged him to demolish the building. I plead that Governor Ajimobi should exhibit this same compassion in taking measures that will protect Mr Ayefele, protect private investment in the state, and restore public admiration for him instead of the present angst that pervades the state,” he told Punch.

  • Ekiti 2018: Tinubu, Akande, Fayemi, others hold strategy meeting in Lagos

As the governorship election in Ekiti State draws to a close, the major opposition party in the state, All Progressives Congress (APC) is leaving no stone unturned to win the state.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that state is presently governed by Ayodele Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Friday, met behind closed doors in Lagos with all the APC aspirants for the governorship election.

The meeting, which held at the old State House, Marina, had in attendance the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; and about 24 others, hoping to clinch the APC ticket for the July 14, 2018 Ekiti State governorship election.

Also in attendance was a former interim National Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande.

After the meeting, Tinubu told reporters that the meeting was aimed at putting the APC house in order ahead of the party’s governorship primary in Ekiti State fixed for May 7, 2018.

He said the aspirants were invited to get their commitment to cooperate with one another as well as the party’s leadership for a transparent primary.

Tinubu said, “We invited them; they came over and they have been here for hours. For what purpose? Free and fair primary that is transparent, that is not tainted, that is incorruptible, that is indisputable and they said that is what they demanded of us.

“We have, therefore, agreed to guarantee that there will not be interference in the political situation and to pledge our support for them.”

The former Lagos State governor added that the leadership of the APC also demanded of the aspirants’ cooperation and a promise that whoever emerges the party’s candidate at the end of the May 7 primary (election) would be supported by all.

He also hinted that a resolution was made that everyone should re-converge in Lagos after the primary election to further strategise on how to capture Ekiti State in the July 14 governorship poll.

  • I went to commiserate with Buhari, not to talk politics – Akande

All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Chief Bisi Akande, said his visit to President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Abuja was not political but to commiserate with him on his bereavement.

Akande, pioneer National Chairman of the party, was at the Presidential Villa in company with another leader of the party, Sen. Bola Tinubu. The visit was the second in two weeks.

Buhari’s extended family lost two senior members within a few hours.

Ai’sha Mamman, wife of the president’s elder brother, died on Friday, while Halima Dauda, his niece, died on Saturday.

Akande told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) shortly after leaving the Villa that his visit with Tinubu to the president had nothing to do with politics ahead of 2019 elections.
According to him, Buhari’s popularity in the country is unshakable.

“I must point out clearly that my visit in the company of Asiwaju has nothing to do with politics. There is no crisis in our party that is not being adequately handled.

“Our visit is a friendly one; it is a visit by friends commiserating with another friend, who recently lost family members. Every other thing is in the imagination of mischief makers.

“The problem is with those who brought this nation to its knees. These people cannot be redeemed.

“They are the ones making all hues and cries, because free money they were used to have ceased,” he said.

Akande said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ruined the country almost beyond redemption.

“President Buhari is doing everything possible to redeem the situation of the country.

“No one said it is going to be easy, given the scale of destruction of the recent past, but with steadfastness and patriotism, a lot is being achieved,” he added.

On Tinubu’s recent assignment to reconcile members of APC, the former chairman of the party said the former Lagos governor was the best man for the job.

“If you will recall, Asiwaju was the deciding factor that brought together the alliance that birthed the APC. He has the energy, the doggedness and the discipline to replicate this in bringing together all feuding sides.

“It is all about the nation. In the APC, we put the country first, and once we are convinced that what we are doing is in the interest of the country, every other thing is secondary.”

  • Buhari running a difficult system of government – Akande

Buhari running a difficult system of government – Akande

A former Interim National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Bisi Akande, says the presidential system of government Nigeria is practicing can no longer sustain its growth and success.

Mr. Akande made the remark while addressing a news conference in his country home, Ila, Osun state as part of activities to mark his 79th birthday.

He said that multi-party parliamentary democracy was the best form of government for Nigeria, if it wanted to catch up with the rest of the civilised world.

Mr. Akande, a former governor of Osun State, said that the American democracy system of multi-party presidentialism was too complicated and costly for a country of poor people with large illiteracy rate like Nigeria.

According to him, the Nigerian nation is currently running a difficult government under an unworkable set up.

“President Buhari is my friend and I want him to succeed but he is running a difficult system of government.

“Nigeria’s democracy is a military democracy of sharing and if we continue like this, there is no how we can succeed.

“Up to this present age, evidence based analyses has proven parliamentary democracy to be the most accountable transparent form of government in the whole world,’’ he said.

He said that parliamentary democracy had helped countries like the United Kingdom rich, stable and respectable globally and also made the very young Israel very strong economically and militarily.

“It is also transforming India from acute poverty and hunger into self- sufficiency and reliability virtually in all fields.

“Apart from being transparent and accountable, parliamentary democracy is absolutely inclusive.

“It appears to be the best form of governmental structure for Nigeria now,’’ he said.

Mr. Akande maintained that anything less accountable and transparent would not help the development of the country.

  • Tinubu warming up to be President come 2019 – Dele Momodu

Publisher of the Ovation Magazine and former Presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu has explained a recent comment by an All Progressives Congress chieftain, Chief Bisi Akande, on issues of ‘automatic ticket’ is a pointer that national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bolaji Tinubu is warming up for presidency come 2019.

Akande during a meeting of the South West leaders of the ruling party had made it clear that there was no automatic ticket for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Reacting to the matter in a long article he shared on social media yesterday, Momodu pointed out that Yoruba leaders are preparing a former governor of Lagos State and national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bolaji Tinubu for presidency come 2019.

He said the decision is borne out of frustration, adding that the Yoruba leadership will no longer support any other tribe for the presidency.

Part of his article reads, “What Baba Akande has not said is simply that the days when the Presidency would be voluntarily zoned to exclude most sections of the country in favour of another section, whether the candidate presented and supported by the people is competent or useless, are over.

“The truth is zoning never worked anyway, as some Presidential candidates left their original parties for other parties in defiance of the zoning formula of their own party.

“Without mincing words, it is obvious that the Yoruba leadership has decided it would no longer support other tribes, zones or regions to attain to power to the exclusion of their tribe.

“They would rather work hard, reach out, and join hands with like minds to get power.

“Their decision is borne out of the acute frustration and disappointment that makes them feel cheated about the Nigerian configuration which does not throw up the best but regularly favours the dregs of society who have only contributed to drawing Nigeria backward, in most cases.

“The campaign has probably started in earnest, culminating in the search for a Yoruba Presidency.

“Though the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Peter Ayodele Fayose has controversially but ceremoniously thrown his hat into the ring, it is the fact that the capo di tutti capi, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, may be warming up for his turn to take a major shot at the race of his life that is most significant.

“Mark my words. One of the greatest political strategists in Nigeria, Tinubu is tired of being a kingmaker and he would rather be the king.

“Indeed, that has always been his ambition but this has been largely curtailed by circumstances.

“Like many of those who supported Major General Muhammadu Buhari to attain power, after so many attempts, the former Senator and former Governor of Lagos State, feels he’s not gotten the respect and relevance he deserves for his monumental effort. Accordingly, he seems determined to make a personal push.

“Apart from the virtues of Baba Akande that I have enumerated above, a lesser known one is his deep sense of loyalty.”
  • Nigeria’s Constitution breeds, protects corruption – Akande

…Advocates adoption of 1963 Republican Constitution

Former National Interim Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief Bisi Akande, has described the 1999 Constitution “the greatest misadventure” for the country noting that its continuous use would not help the country make progress in the right direction.

The elder statesman therefore called for the scrapping of the 1999 Constitution which should be ‘temporarily’ replaced with the 1963 Republican Constitution.

Akande spoke on Tuesday at the launching of the book, “Nigeria: the Path We Refused to Take,” written by Afenifere’s General Secretary, Basorun Arogbofa, an event which held at the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

The Constitution (1999) puts emphasis on spending rather than making money, thereby intensifying the battles for supremacy between the legislature and the executive while the judiciary is being corruptly tainted and discredited.

The Constitution breeds and protects corrupt practices and criminal impunities in governance. The 1999 Constitution can never be beneficially reviewed and the ongoing piecemeal adjustments or amendments can only totally blot the essence of national values and accelerate the de-amalgamation of Nigeria.

All the angels coming from heavens cannot make that Constitution work for the progress of Nigeria. It should only be scrapped as a bad relic of military mentality, and it ought to be temporarily replaced with the 1963 Republican Constitution to enable a transition to the writing of a suitable constitution,’’ Akande noted.

Also, according to him, the incursion of the military in Nigeria’s politics for 29 out of 57 years of independence had drawn back and blighted the sense of democracy and good governance among Nigerian political leaders.

Mr. Arogbofa, the author of the book, said it was the third in the series of intellectual discourse on Nigeria and her political survival.

He said he had used the medium to call Nigeria’s attention to the issue of true federalism and restructuring without which there could not be meaningful development.

  • Half of IDPs’ food diverted – Presidency

The Presidency yesterday disclosed that until now, over 50 trucks in every 100 trucks of food sent to the North-East to cater for those displaced by the Boko Haram sect were being diverted.

It said the ugly development was being addressed with the implementation of the Special Relief Intervention –an initiative launched by the Federal Government in Maiduguri on June 8.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Acting President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists.

Akande said an update report on the implementation was presented to the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, during a meeting he had with National Assembly members from the North-East at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Friday.

He quoted the report presented to Osinbajo as revealing that the initiative is now delivering assorted grains to Internally Displaced Persons through over 1000 trucks and already have reached 12, 691 households in Borno State since it was inaugurated.

He said, “According to the update presented by the implementation team, the diversion of relief materials including food and related matters which has dogged food delivery to the IDPs would be significantly curbed under the new distribution matrix adopted under the initiative.

“For instance, over 1000 trucks of assorted grains are now on course, delivering the grains intact to beneficiaries since the commencement of the present programme as against the reported diversion of over 50 trucks in every 100 trucks sent to the North-East.”

Akande disclosed that under the new arrangement, 656 armed policemen would be involved in the movement of assorted grains from various reserves across the country to designated warehouses of the National Emergency Management Agency in the North-East for onward distribution to beneficiaries.

He added that another 1,376 military personnel would escort the grains to some IDPs in the hinterlands across the affected states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe.

He quoted Osinbajo as describing the initiative as “a unique operation that promises to deliver on a well laid out plan.”

He said the Acting President assured all stakeholders that the process would remain transparent and the objectives fully actualised.

According to him, Osinbajo also disclosed that apart from the emergency food distribution, the Federal Government will also deliver on a holistic plan that includes empowerment because empowerment is an important feature of the relief intervention.

He said although the problems were immense, especially when compared to available resources, the Federal Government remains determined to deliver humanitarian aid through a process that is transparent and effective.

  • APC youth group lambasts Akande over comment on Buhari’s health

APC youth group lambasts Akande over comment on Buhari’s health

The All Progressive Congress, APC Youth Progressive Frontier has slammed the former interim chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande over his recent ‘crude’ statement on the health of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The group said people like Akande should be taken for psychiatric test because a sane human being would never joke with health of a sitting president.

Bisi Akande had in a statement on Monday claimed that some people were “feasting” on President Buhari’s poor health.

The APC chieftain admitted that Buhari’s illness was gradually taking a toll on the country, adding that history may repeat itself.

“These are two great red flag dangers that have the potential of plunging the country into unprecedented chaos and of destabilising the gains of democracy since 1999.

“The greatest danger, however, is for political interests at the corridor of power attempting to feast on the health of Mr. President in a dangerous manner that may aggravate the problems between the executive and the national assembly without realising if, in the end, it could drag the entire country into avoidable doom.

“My greatest fear, however, is that the country should not be allowed to slide into anarchy and disorder of a “monumental proportion,” Akande was quoted in the statement as saying.

Reacting however, the APC youth group in a statement jointly signed by its National President, Gbolaham Badmus and Secretary General, Shodeinde Lukman, lampooned the former party chairman for trying to play politics with the president’s health.

The group called on Nigerians to rally round Buhari in prayers as he continues to work and fight against corruption, which has eaten deep into the nation’s economy.

The statement said, “As patriotic Nigerians that are thoroughly engrossed in the task of contributing our quota to the development of the nation, we are pained by the way and manner some key officials of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have chosen to make derogatory statement about the affairs of the nation especially the issues surrounding the well-being of our dear president, Muhammadu Buhari.

“In one of the latest instances, the founding National Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande shamelessly told those who cared to listen to his infamous sermon that the health condition of the president have dovetailed into untold hardship on the citizenry and called for emergency measures to be taken in order to avert a national calamity. We view this as an irresponsible drift.

“With due respect, we wish to state categorically that such careless utterances by a person who is supposed to have known and appreciated the immense energy, vigour, dedication and a whole-hearted commitment President Buhari have injected into the task of rejuvenating our national life, is grossly disappointing. And has actually gone a long way to show how petty our grand parents have become. In order climes, this would have been a time for sober reflection and not a time for some people to take alibi in and unleash their hidden venom and deep rooted hatred against the president,” the group noted.

The APC youth noted that it was glaring that people like Akande is omly trying to tear the party apart with his personal interest and ulterior motives.

The statement added, “Equally, our belief is that, from the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. The main purpose of such utterances in our estimation is that, a section of the party is now torn between the pursuit of personal, yet infamous agenda which has the ultimate evil aim of creating an anomalous cabal that is tilted towards a particular section of the country rather that helping in rebuilding a virile nation that all of us will be proud to be its citizens. This is a dangerous dimension which we all patriotic Nigerians must gallantly stand up to defend democracy against hawks that are lurking around with dubious intentions.

“Ordinarily, we would have assumed that Chief Akande was making an intervention with a genuine intention but thorough checks by our network across the length and breadth of the nation have unequivocally indicated that, his action was a well orchestrated plan that has been calculated with the major aim of causing disaffection among Nigerians that have reposed absolute confidence in the administration of President Buhari which has embarked on a mission with a vision to redeem the country from the shackles of corruption, insecurity and economic redundancy.

“We tend to wonder what has prompted Chief Akande to embark on this holy-than-thou voyage most especially from the standpoint that President Buhari himself is completely honest to Nigerians and in fact genuinely told the country upon his return form his medical vacation in the United Kingdom that he has never as sick as that particular point in time.”

The group added that it was glad that the president had since resumed office after taking out some days to rest and attend to his health, which it noted has improved.

“We are happy and have chosen to give glory to the almighty God that barely a day after Chief Akande made that unguarded statement, our President pulled out of his well deserved rest to resume work in his office at the Aso rock presidential villa thereby perforating the assertion as earlier clandestinely made by our party elder.

“Those who met with Mr. President on Tuesday, 2nd May, 2017, including the Attorney -General of the federation, Abubakar Malami as well as the Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mainkanti Baru pointed out in loud and clear terms that he was in high spirit and on top of his job.

“This no doubt will come as a rude shock to Chief Akande who has chosen to become an unholy tool in the hands of some few self seeking individuals who have used him to massage their ego.

“We are tempted therefore to mention that in sane places, elders like Chief Akande are the conscience of the society who use their accumulated wealth of experience, expertise, contacts and goodwill to impact positively on the lives of the generality of the people as well as add impetus to the giant strides of the administration in order to bring about national cohesion but not for destructive purposes in the shabby manner portrayed by Chief Akande who vainly tried to cast aspersions on our collective existence.
“We greatly regret to re-echo the belief that, if Chief Akande has any misgiving against any organ of the government he should find better ways to ventilate on such grievances rather than dragging the president and the presidency into a needless battle that will pitch the executive against the legislature and even the judiciary whom he also frontally targeted in his barbaric outing.

“In extreme cases, we are also recommending a psychiatric test for persons like Chief Akande and his barefaced litany of co-travellers. Nigeria belongs to all of us and not a particular section or elements who think by talking down on President Buhari, they will achieve cheap political goals not minding that such will not be of any consequence on the rest of us,” the statement added.

In a related development, the Arewa Consultative Forum, on Tuesday, also frowned at the unhealthy statement credited to Akande over President Buhari’s health.
