No plan to probe ex-Gov Emmanuel – Akwa Ibom Assembly

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has said that it has no plan to probe immediate-past Gov. Udom Emmanuel, as falsely speculated in some sections of the media.

Deputy Speaker Kufreabasi Edidem disclosed this in a statement issued in Uyo and made available to newsmen on Tuesday.

According to Edidem, the house has not constituted any committee to probe the former governor.

“The attention of the leadership and members of the Akwa Ibom Assembly has been drawn to a report in a newspaper publication of Monday, Aug. 11 that the immediate past governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, is facing a probe by the House.

“The House wishes to state categorically that there is no scintilla of truth in the publication, in content and in intent and gives clarifications to help properly inform the public as follows:

“That the publication is speculative, lacks factual basis, and does not reflect any official position or resolution of the house,” he stated.

Edidem further stated that what transpired at the plenary session on Thursday, Aug. 7  was that the member representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency, Mr Uwem Imoh-Ita, raised a Matter of Urgent Public Importance that some employees of the Coconut Plantation had not been paid for seven months.

He maintained that “as a norm in the house, an adhoc committee has been constituted to investigate the issue raised and report back within one month.

“The committee has yet to submit its report to the house for consideration,” the statement added.

It urged the newspaper and other media organisations to always verify their facts from official legislative sources before publication.

“Inaccurate and sensational reporting not only misleads the public but also undermines the credibility of democratic institutions.

“Media professionals should thus know where to draw the line between facts and sensationalism. Journalism is a noble profession with its strong ethical bent,” Edidem said.

SIM card fraud: Police apprehend suspect in A’Ibom

The Police Command in Akwa Ibom says it has arrested a suspected cyber criminal involved in fraudulent SIM Card registration in the state.

The Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement in Uyo on Saturday.

John urged members of the public to register their SIM card at authorised and legitimate outlets to avoid falling victims to criminals.

She said the suspect residing at No. 34 Oron Road, Uyo was arrested on July 23  along Nung Udoe in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area of the State.

The police spokesperson said the arrest followed a discreet investigation into a new and emerging crime trend involving fraudulent SIM card registration.

“The suspect was apprehended after intelligence revealed an unidentified man parading in various locations, posing as a mobile SIM card registration agent.

“He would capture the faces and details of unsuspecting members of the public, who come to register new SIM cards.

“However, after collecting their information, he would claim network issues and instruct them to return the following day. When victims return, he would often have changed his location, raising suspicions.

“Upon being apprehended, the suspect admitted to using the National Identification Numbers (NIN) of innocent persons to register new SIM cards, which he then sold to fraudsters and other individuals involved in nefarious activities for substantial sums of money,” John said.

John listed exhibits recovered from the suspect to include a data capturing device, three mobile phones, twenty used SIM cards, various filled forms, small bag and the sum of N10,000.

She urged members of the public to check their National Identification Numbers (NIN) to ascertain if any unknown phone numbers are linked to their identity.

John also urged members of the public to be vigilant within their environments and report any suspicious activity or instances of fraudulent SIM card registration to the police for prompt action.

The PPRO said that security agencies were intensifying efforts to track down individuals who purchased the fraudulently registered SIM cards from the suspect.

She commended members of the public for their continued cooperation and encourages everyone to remain alert to the new criminal tactics.

Ibom Air targets N150bn revenue in 2025

Ibom Air is targeting N150 billion profit for the year 2025, up from N96 billion profit it generated in 2024.

The Chief Executive Officer of the airline, Mr George Uriesi, made this known at the Ibom Air Travel Agents Forum on Friday in Lagos.

According to Uriesi, of the N96 billion profit in 2024, six per cent came from travel agents across Nigeria.

He said that the airline was growing and positioning  to transform  airline business in the country.

Uriesi also said that Ibom Air would  be going on the General Distrubution System  before the end of 2025.

He said that this would enhance the airline’s visibility globally,  as travel agents would be able to access its products from anywhere.

On flight disruptions and cancellations, Uriesi said that the airline had decided to reserve an airplane on the ground to take care of such situations.

He said, however, that the arrangement was not profitable to the airline.

According to him, the airline was making efforts to improve its customer services.

He also said that Ibom Air had concluded plans to expand its operations to Malabo, Equitorial Guinea, Doualla, Cameroon and Sao Tome and Principe from its terminal in Uyo.

According to him, the terminal will be a hub, when completed.

“We are about to expand all over Africa. Very soon we will start operating our new terminal. We were very much involved in the design of the terminal.

“The terminal is built to support our strategy,” he said.

Uriesi addressed some challenges faced by travel agents such as pricing, online discounts, ticket prices, paystack charges, and refunds.

Members of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agents and members of the Federation of Tourism Association of Nigeria, as well as other stakeholders, were present at the forum.

Some travel agents were awarded certificates for engagements with the airline in the past six months.

In an emotionally charged address before a massive crowd of supporters, party stalwarts, and national stakeholders, Governor Eno described his decision to join the APC as one rooted in evolving realities and a firm commitment to place the collective interests of Akwa Ibom State above partisan considerations.

“While I deeply respect the emotions and sentiments of some of our people who have elected not to join me on this progressive journey for now,” the governor stated, “I want to say unequivocally that strategic decisions must reflect evolving realities. We must prioritize the future and collective interest of our state.”

Reassuring citizens of his unwavering commitment to inclusive governance, Pastor Eno emphasized that his defection will not alter his promise to lead with fairness, equity, and transparency.

“Let me reassure all Akwa Ibomites that regardless of my political alignment, I remain a governor for all. We will continue to deliver on the ARISE Agenda, our social contract with the people no matter their political affiliations” he affirmed.

Describing the move as “courageous, visionary, and symbolic of a leadership ready to embrace national collaboration,” the governor said it reflected his resolve to pursue bold and strategic partnerships for tangible progress.

“Our major request today is to help us realize the Ibom Deep Seaport. Akwa Ibom boasts the longest natural draft in the country, 19 meters deep, requiring no dredging. We have waited long enough. I trust that Mr. President, a man of his word, will answer this call,” he said.

Highlighting the political significance of the moment, Pastor Eno likened the state’s new alliance with the APC to a hopeful bride looking to her groom.

“We are making a decision by aligning with our son, the Senate President, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio and committing to work towards delivering victory for our President in 2027. Every progressive movement is aim to consolidate and deliver results,” he noted.

Paying homage to past leaders who shaped the state’s trajectory, Governor Eno acknowledged their enduring legacies.

“I pay special tribute to our father and elder statesman, His Excellency, Architect Obong Victor Attah, who fought for resource control and laid the foundation for our growth. I thank Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCON, whose righteous anger birthed enduring infrastructure, including this stadium named in his honor. I also acknowledge my political mentor, His Excellency Mr. Udom Emmanuel, who expanded our infrastructure and gave us Ibom Air, most of us arrived here today on Ibom Air.”

He added with optimism: “Now, it is our turn. By the time we leave office, the Deep Seaport will stand as a lasting symbol of progress.”

Concluding with a call to unity and purpose, Governor Umo Eno declared: “It is time to join the progressive train. This movement is not just political, it is purposeful, timely and designed to deliver lasting value to our people.”

It would be recalled that on June 6, Eno officially announced his defection from the People’s Democratic Party to APC.

Enang, a former Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly and Niger Delta Affairs, said that the governor’s decision had aligned Akwa Ibom to the centre.

He assured the governor and his supporters that the APC would receive them with open arms, and keep to every agreement that had been reached.

“As progressives, we shall work with the governor and his supporters to ensure that they fit into the party without hitches.

Why Umo Eno’s defection is good for Akwa Ibom – Senator Enang

Senator Ita Enang, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has said Governor Umo Eno’s defection to the party will engender more positive developments in Akwa Ibom State.

Enang made the expression in Uyo on Sunday while reacting to the governor’s defection from the People’s Democratic Party to APC.

Enang, a former Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly and Niger Delta Affairs said that the governor’s decision had aligned Akwa Ibom to the centre.

“Akwa Ibom people will gain so much from the centre following the governor’s latest political alliance,” he said.

Enang urged Akwa Ibom people to look back at gains recorded in the state between 1999 and 2015 when the state had connections with the centre.

“That connection is what the governor’s movement to APC has rekindled. Akwa Ibom people should expect more attention from the Federal Government.

“All our struggles since 2015 have been to achieve this connection, we cannot be in a minority party and expect major developmental projects.

“Today, the governor is in the same party with the president, it is a thing of joy to us, he has set the stage for growth and progress,” he said.

  • UPDATE: The truth behind my defection to APC – Gov Umo Eno

UPDATE: The truth behind my defection to APC – Gov Umo Eno

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has said the interest of his State predicated on the need to align with the centre to attract more federal presence is the reason he decided to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Governor Eno on Friday finally dumped the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the APC while stressing that he did not want to speak from both sides of his mouth and had to come out to join the progressives formally to avoid anti party activities.

Eno, speaking at the banquet hall, Government House, Uyo, said he had to join the APC to support President Bola Tinubu to continue with the reforms he had started.

He said he had done wide consultations with critical stakeholders in the Akwa Ibom project to explain and inform them on his movement.

“Earlier this morning, I submitted a formal letter of resignation from the PDP to the ward Chairman; same copy has been sent to both the state chairman and the national chairman,” he said.

The governor thanked the PDP for the support and love and for working with him in the past two years of running the affairs of Akwa Ibom.

He said he had taken his decision after due consultation with all critical stakeholders across the length and breadth of the state for the past three months.

“I believe no one that has ever moved or changed party has ever consulted the way I have done.

“I did that because of the respect I have for all of you, stakeholders in project Akwa Ibom. I did that knowing that each and everyone of you needed to be consulted and informed.

“I needed to explain why I am moving, and at this point, that consultation culminated into meeting all the critical stakeholders in PDP last night in this hall, where I took time to explain to you why we must move.

“We must be able to interpret the time and flow with the time and not run against the tide.

“Having completed the rounds of my consultation, as your servant that you have elected to serve you, I therefore have decided to progressively move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Today, I have made the bold declaration to join that train,” Eno said.

Why I am in the APC: Governor Eno’s defection speech

BEING THE SPEECH BY HIS EXCELLENCY, PASTOR UMO ENO, PhD, ON THE OCCASION OF HIS PROGRESSIVE MOVEMENT FROM THE PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP) TO THE ALL PROGRESSIVES PARTY (APC)- UYO- JUNE 6, 2025

    PROTOCOL

    1. It was Dalai Lama, one of the world’s most highly admired moral voices who spoke so eloquently about change and the constancy of values. Dalia had advised the world to “Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.”

    2. Today, fellow Akwaibomites, we are gathered here to witness change while equally affirming the constancy of our collective values and defining ethos as a State.

    3.  For some time now, the political space particularly in this State and the Nation in general have been awash with the news of my likely movement from the PDP, the platform that had provided the levers and ladder of my political ascendancy to the position of Governor of this State. The discussions have elicited various layers of analysis in the process.

    4. Today, I am here to answer some of those nagging questions. Like the Dalai Lama had said, we should always be open to change but not let go of our shared values.

    5. Earlier this morning, I submitted my formal Letter of Resignation from the PDP to my Ward Chairman, same copy was sent to both the State Chairman as well as the National Chairman. I have therefore, decided to Progressively move to the All Progressive Congress, the (APC).

    6. Standing before you today, I make bold to state categorically that, though I have, by today’s event, changed my political affiliation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All-Progressives Congress (APC) my values, my moral fibre, the foundational principles I have nourished and lived by remain unchanged and sacrosanct.

    7.  Why am I in the APC, you may ask?  The answer is short and simple: Enlightened State Interest predicated on the need to align our State with the Centre to attract more Federal presence. That is the truth-pure and simple as well as the exercise of my fundamental Right of Association as expressed in the 1999 Constitution as Amended.

    8.  President Tinubu, GCFR, has possibly, in recent history of this Nation, faced the most daunting economic challenges of any leader. With boldness and deep convictions, he has stared these challenging moments head-on and came up with solutions that, though in the immediate aftermath is tough for Nigerians, but however, are beginning to bear long-lasting and sustainable effects.

    9. The removal of petrol subsidy, though a hard decision, has brought more funds to subnational entities to pursue audacious projects that are positively affecting the lives of their people.  Akwa Ibom State today, is more of  a  constructing site with many life-touching projects across the 31 Local Governments Areas. The economic fog is becoming clearer, the confidence in our economy is growing and we need to support him to finish this huge task of national re-awakening and economic renewal.

    10.  It is a known fact that, I have never hidden my admiration for the President and his patriotic devotion to national renewal which he is engendering today

As a young professional working in Lagos while he was the Governor, I was amazed and fascinated by the manner he ran Lagos, and had, with focus and vision, raised the profile of Lagos State to become a leading Subnational in the country, while facing daunting challenges.

I believe he is poised to replicate the Lagos magic on a larger national scale. I therefore, have no apologies for supporting him for a second term in office to complete the reforms he has started.

    11.  Let me also say it here, that political parties are vehicles to run for elections. Governance in my considered opinion should be done, without rigid attachment to political labels, since these parties are not defined by ideology but by enlightened set of interests.

    12.  In two years, since my inauguration as Governor, I have not worn a toga of a political party rather it has been my passionate commitment to pursuing the larger interest of our State and our people. The Arise Agenda, has been our Governance Blueprint, and that’s what it will be as we make this movement. I therefore, appeal to you my people to join me in this necessary movement to align our State with the Centre and to facilitate more development to our State.

    13.  Let me add here that our dear State is nationally considered as one of the safest and peaceful States in the nation. There is an urgent need to sustain and deepen this important catalyst for growth, by not engaging in unnecessary political bickering. Peace brings development, peace brings unity and unity breeds brotherhood and inclusivity and our State is the ultimate beneficiary.

    14. I have always said I will work for the unity of our State by running a bipartisan administration. This has been a well-thought-out position that was so eloquently stated in my Inaugural Speech on May 29, 2023.

    15. On that historic day, I had stated thus “Elections are over, and our kindred spirit must be renewed and deepened. We are all Akwaibomites first before politics.

Politics, therefore, must not separate or sever the ties of our brotherhood, common heritage and aspirations. I pledge to you, that I will be Governor for all Akwaibomites irrespective of political persuasion or affiliations”

    16. Today, as I make this formal movement from the PDP to APC, I pledge to you again, my dear Akwaibomnites, that I will still run a bipartisan and inclusive governance. Akwa Ibom State, I promise you will be a model of how to work together, pray together, aspire together, dream together and achieve together without the polarising impulses of partisan politics. Political parties remain vehicles for elections. I will continue to ensure that governance is done through the prism of bipartisanship.

    17. Let me end this  speech with a quote from the renowned author, Julie Flygare “The secret of change is to focus all your energy not in fighting the old, but on building the new.”

    18. Together, with the old and the new, we will build our dear State, with unity, with peace, with inclusivity, with love and kindred spirit in accordance with the lines in our State’s Anthem that “our dreams be ever one, rising “beyond ethnicity”, to “build with love, our Promised Land” so we may go “Forward Ever and Backward Never!!  That is what I am dedicating to doing and I ask you to continue to support and pray for us.

    19. Like the children of Issachar in 1st Chronicles Chapter 12 verse 32, were “men that had understanding of the times to know what Israel should do”” I also expect the understanding of the times we are in, and why we are doing this movement. As the children of Issachar pitched their tenth with David, for the common good of Israel, I expect unflinching loyalty of our Team- a point that is further eloquently illustrated in John 10: 27 “My sheep hears my voice, and I know them and they follow me.”

    20.  I am convinced the the voice I heard that led us to this day and to this movement was the right voice and I know my people will follow me and continue to give us their support.

Let us strategically Arise together, to the promise of a better, more inclusive, stronger and united Akwa Ibom State that is aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, GCFR led-Federal Government

    21.  To those who may be concerned by this Progressive movement, I want to assure you that I have received enormous assurances of support and seamless integration from our dear President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,

The Senate President, Distinguished Senator Godwill Akpabio, GCON, and the Progressive Governors’ Forum. Those who know our dear President will attest to the fact that his words are his bond. This movement, falling on a day that we mark Sallah, is our own gift to our President and it has divine connotation

    22. APC- Progress, Arise – That same God! God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria, God bless Akwa Ibom State and bless us all!

    23. On your Mandate we shall stand, On your Mandate we shall stand, On your Mandate, On your Mandate. On your Mandate we shall stand
