Unknown gunmen extend their maniacal fury to Akwa Ibom sons – By Joe Iniodu

    By Joe Iniodu

Yesterday, October 7, began another day of mourning in Akwa Ibom State. It came on the heels of the death of Mr Imoh Isang who is said to have been gunned down alongside his police orderly, Inspector Linus Odey by people suspected to be members of IPOB and operating a heartless killer wing called unknown gunmen.

Imoh Isang popularly known as DIG was hacked down yesterday while on official assignment to outside the State through Owerri. The details of the gruesome murder are gory and heart-rending. The body of the vivacious, ebullient, warm and super active Chief Protocol Officer to Senator Bassey Albert, the gubernatorial candidate of YPP is said to have been brought back to Akwa Ibom yesterday “lifeless” and deposited in the mortuary. But in a sane clime , DIG and the police orderly had no business dying. They were not traveling at odd hours. Isang may have deemed that he supposedly protected in the refuge of an armed policeman. But rather than be a protection, the presence of an armed policeman became his albatross. Adopting the style of guerilla warfare, these barefaced criminals who couch their sub- culture activities under the pretence of agitation ambushed and opened fire on vehicles. The conducts conduce with cowardice which give vent to the type of violence they perpetrate and which is now a recurring decimal.

Imo and the police orderly were on a legimate mission. They neither offended the law nor man nor tribe. They were not even given an opportunity to stir an altercation to justify or merit the unwholesome death. They were cut short by a bunch of unscrupulous criminals who have completely lost their humanity and turned themselves into murderous maniacs that relish taking other people’s lives .

Many questions arise from the activities of IPOB and its extraction being the unknown gunmen. What are they really looking for? If they are for the sovereignty of Biafra, why are they spilling the blood of innocent people? Do they need blood to build their nation? It is a fact that if this savagery is not halted, it may affect the relationship of the Igbos with other regions. Sometime ago, a prominent politician of Northern extraction, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak was killed in Imo State. Less than a month ago, the convoy of Senator Ifeanyi Uba was attacked and about a dozen people killed. One of the victims of that dastardly act was an Akwa Ibom son who was a photographer to the Senator. Coincidentally, his remains were brought back to the State earlier yesterday while another of our illustrious son, Imoh Isang was felled same yesterday in the same Igbo land. This trend is worrisome and unlikely to promote good neigbourliness.

DIG was a jolly good fellow; jovial, affable and sociable. One can not forget his standard response to the name DIG, “one that can not be retired”. This jocular mindset may have been the adrenaline behind his sense of service. Imoh Isang was not only a workaholic, he carried out any work assigned him with an extreme sense of devotion. He believed in hard work and made it his creed. And it was in the course of work that he met the untimely death that has brought a pall of gloom to the Akwa Ibom community.

To Senator Bassey Albert and the families of the deceased including Inspector Linus Odey, I extend my deepest condolences and pray God to comfort and uphold them in these very difficult times.

  • Akwa Ibom @ 35: Peace beyond understanding – By Udeme Nana

Akwa Ibom @ 35: Peace beyond understanding – By Udeme Nana

As Akwa Ibom State rolls out the drums to celebrate the milestone of attaining 35 years in existence, one resource stands out unmistakeably. Although it’s silent and not tangible, it pervades everywhere in the state and shines through beckoning indigenes , non indigenes and visitors alike to embrace and cherish it. That resource is what makes Okon Asuquo, a motorcycle driver in Ika to convey a passenger all the way to and from Abak daily and at anytime until his limbs become stiff and his eyes croggy from tiredness.

It is what makes Akparawa Udom Stephen , a Keke driver to ply every known route in the state capital till midnight when the fear of picking up ‘ghosts’ as passengers and his exhausted limbs signal him to go and rest. The Christian Churches are not left out – they now organize and host ‘tarry night’ programs until they have a leading by the “holy spirit” to close. And their Members return home, anytime – no matter how late at night or how early in the morning. Traders engage their customers in the various markets till sundown into the late evenings and supermarkets no longer hurry to close. Owners and those who run sit – outs , lounges, bars like ‘Afe Ndia’ and restaurants along the streets open for customers round the clock. Nobody now checks the time and people no longer look over their shoulders to ascertain who was behind. This resource, often not factored into reckoning as a critical achievement is the prevalence of peace in Akwa Ibom State. Make no mistake about it, a peaceful location or destination is one of the most sought-after resources by people , particularly investors.

In Akwa Ibom State , hoteliers now hum and those who can , sing the hallelujah chorus daily and go for Thanksgiving in places of worship every Sunday. They do this because business is good and thriving for them as visitors from nearby states fly in while others negotiate the poor road network of our neighborhoods to spend time , meet friends , relatives and business partners in Uyo. Every weekend , hotels in Uyo are filled with the Chima’s , Ndukwe’s , Ogbonnaya’s , Otise’s , Okonkwo’s , Ikemefuna’s of this world. It’s easier for them to fly into Uyo from Lagos and meet their relatives , cut business deals , unwind, eat good food and return to their base without any fear. That circumstance is a far cry from assassinations, abductions, attacks by bandits, unknown gunmen, terrorists which bring , in their wake, so much anguish, emotional stress, pain and tears to families in other places because of the prevailing incidence of mindless violence in other destinations. In several parts of the country , it seems like Nigeria is at present a jungle which has relapsed into the state of nature where existence was “nasty, brutish and short”. The peace and calmness in Akwa Ibom has stimulated industrial activities as seen in investors who have trusted the state with manufacturing companies like the Automobile Assembly plant at Itam, Syringe , Electricity Meter firms, Kings flower Mill , Ibom Air and intellectual tourism with Uyo as a choice location for Conferences and other conclave.

Even though a public commentator wrote recently in a social media outlet that “Hoodlums are gradually turning Uyo into an unsafe city.” According to him “I heard last week that they pretend to be selling at traffic hold up in Uyo. When the light shows red, one will walk up to you in your car and get your attention then lift his shirt to reveal a gun strapped to his waist and tell that if you raise the alarm he will finish you there. While the others lurk around, the one who approached will rob you of your phone and other valuables knowing you can’t run away while the light is red. Uyo is no longer safe.

He warned car owners to be watchful at traffic lights and wound up their window glass and lock their cars. Don’t buy at traffic lights.” He advised. That reads like an advisory to first time visitors to Victoria station in London, Onitsha, Warri, Lagos or Kano City.

True, every city , in all parts of the world have these deviants constituting nuisance to the people, while acknowledging such activities of miscreants and low – lives who operate to steal sleep from people around Urua Ekpa / Itu road axis and are determined to disrupt the relative peace across the state, it is possible to checkmate them by beefing up security around the few flashpoints.
No doubt, there have been cases of kidnapping in Ukanafun and that of a Principal – General of a School in Oruk Anam and the instance at Mkpat Enin involving Apostle John Okoriko of Solid Rock Ministries. These are but exceptional breaches.

However, these isolated incidents cannot define Akwa Ibom State at this stage of its development. Such occurrences are rather symptomatic of urban centers and cities all over the world. No matter what any “wailer” would say to the contrary , Akwa Ibom State is safe , and is arguably an oasis of peace in the country. The peace that is enjoyed in these parts is simply beyond understanding when viewed against the daily orgy of violence in other parts of the country. This peaceful environment shows in the number of businesses sprouting up and consolidating their existence around the State. It explains why there is a rat race for real estate across the state , especially, in Uyo – the State capital. It is what accounts for the robust political rallies and engagements without molestation or fear of harassment. It is what has influenced the regular traffic by traders who commute from neighbouring states to venture into the beach markets at Issiet , Oron, Ebughu , Ibaka , Ibeno , Ikot Abasi for seafood stuffs where they buy in bulk by day and transport out at night knowing that all the roads were safe to ply no matter how late at night. This precious resource is a harvest from the leadership at any point in time.

There was a season in this state where Akwa Ibom people and those who lived in its boundaries went to sleep immediately after sundown. It was an era of self – imposed curfew and there was a population drift outside the State. It was a season where the question on the lips was ‘who has been kidnapped or killed today’ ? This writer is of the view that the era of Governor Udom Emmanuel can be described as an age of peace in the annals of the state.

Since he became Governor, Akwa Ibom has not featured in the regular diplomatic advisory issued regularly by foreign embassies to warn their nationals from venturing into unsafe localities in Nigeria. This should not be taken for granted because a peaceful destination attracts development as moths to light. Indeed , there is a perception factor in investment decisions. No investor would risk his capital by venturing into a violent and volatile environment. Planning and reasonable estimates can only be achieved where there is peace.

The provision of infrastructure in localities is possible in a society where there is absence of communal agitations and violence. Under his watch , Governor Udom Emmanuel’s administration has engendered a peace that should become a model for leadership in Akwa Ibom State in the years ahead. In the words of Professor ( Bishop) Ahaziah Umanah on the occasion of the presentation of his latest book “The Peoples Right To Know” at Abak recently ‘even if he has not done anything and there are several accomplishments that one can credit to the Governor, he has created an environment of peace and peaceful co – existence in this state. Human society behaves like the chameleon which takes the colour of the foliage of its environment and just as the little reptile, a society adopts the predominant psychology, mentality, attitudes, character traits and method of operation of its leadership. Peace is a Godly and goodly attribute and Governor Udom Emmanuel is a God – centred leader , no doubt his era is markedly different on this critical score.

Stalemate as INEC snubs APC request to sack Igini

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has snubbed the petition by the All Progressives Congress, APC seeking the sack of the Akwa Ibom State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mike Igini.

The APC had in a petition received on July 3, 2022 sought the dismissal of Igini within 48 hours failing which it would seek other approaches to fire the human rights activist from his position.

The petition directed to the INEC chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu was endorsed by the APC Zonal Organizing Secretary, South-South, Dr. Blessing Agbomhere.

The APC was yet to respond to the apparent rebuff of its plea to INEC to sack Igini.

Igini has been accused by the faction loyal to Senator Godswill Akpabio of working against its interest. Igini who in 2019 stopped schemes that were supposedly aimed to return Akpabio to the Senate has been accused by the former governor’s associates of again barring him from the Senate election in 2023.

In the petition against Igini, the APC accused Igini of “incessant act of bias, injustice, sabotage and malevolence meted out on the All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom state.”

While reacting to the petition, Mike Igini dismissed the petition raised against him by the All Progressives Congress, APC saying that the petitioners were previous members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP who lack democratic values and identify with whatever ruling party to enable them rig elections. He spoke in reaction to the petition articulated by the APC South-South zone upon actions taken by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC as regarding the APC in Akwa Ibom.

They protested and President Jonathan told them to keep quiet that he brought Jega to sanitize the system. The CPC which was then the party of now President Buhari won an election and Tinubu’s ACN also won Obubra. Blessing was in the PDP then and rget accused me of being a member of the ACN.

Unfortunately, Nigeria is a country where there is no book of remembrance we cannot have a democracy without democrats. Where was this Blessing when gunmen invaded my house in Benin because I stood against the purported federal might? That same individual is now in the ruling party. I did same in 2014 in Osun. I did same thing in Anambra and in Imo when there was crisis and I was sent to intervene.

The Akwa Ibom State High Court presided by Justice Okon Okon has sentenced two members of a three-man robbery gang to death by hanging.

The convicts, Donald John Obot, 35, a barber, and Blessing Christopher Utah, 36, who have been using tricycles to rob their victims, were sentenced to death, having been found guilty of robbing a trader, Esther Victor Akpan after she withdrew one hundred and ten thousand Naira from her bank on Abak Road, Uyo in December 2018.

They include a 35-year-old barber from Nung Obong in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, Donald John Obot, and a 36-year-old ex-convict from Ibiaku Uruan in Uruan Local Government Area, Blessing Christopher Utah.

They confessed that they had robbed a man of N500,000, another of N200,000, and a woman at IBB Avenue, Uyo, the state capital, of her N131,000.

Justice Okon, while delivering the judgment, found Donald John Obot and Blessing Christopher Utah guilty of conspiracy and armed robbery.

The Court said, “It is bizarre and unfortunate that armed robbers abused public transport system and converted their tricycles to perpetrate crime, leaving their innocent victims with harrowing experiences and tales of woes.”

Justice Okon added that the convicts confessed that their meeting point was Federal Secretariat, Uyo, before they proceeded to monitor banks and ATM points in Uyo metropolis, looking for customers withdrawing money.

The leader of the gang and rider of the tricycle used in the robbery operations is said to have escaped and his whereabouts are unknown.

The Court said, “his days are numbered”, advising him to use his lucky escape to mend his ways and lifestyle.

  • Nollywood actor, Moses Armstrong arrested in Akwa Ibom over rape

The Police Command in Akwa Ibom has confirmed the arrest of Moses Armstrong, a member of Actors Guild of Nigeria for allegedly raping a minor.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Odiko Macdon, confirmed this in a statement in Uyo on Monday.

Macdon said that the Police Command had been inundated with inquiries about one Moses Armstrong, the actor.

He said that the actor was arrested on June 9 in the state.

“The popular Nollywood actor and singer, Moses Armstrong, has been arrested by men of the Police Command for allegedly defiling a 16-year old girl in the state.

“We arrested the Suspect based on an initial complaint of rape. We have done our preliminary findings and the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has taken over the case,” he said.

Macdon explained that the suspect was no longer with the command but taken to court on June 20 by the DPP and remanded accordingly.

Aso speaking, the National President of the Guild, Mr Emeka Rollas, described the case as “a very serious one”.

He said it was being handled by the wife of the governor, Mrs Martha Emmanuel, through her Family Empowerment and Youth Re-Orientation Path Initiative. (FEYReP).

Rollas explained that the accusation was a sad development, as it involved one of their own and the organisation would not condone such a crime.

“To get involved with a child as young as 16 years is not something I and the association I represent, would stand for.

“This is a very sad development involving a member of ours, but I wouldn’t want to comment any further on this case,” he said.

Armstrong until his arrest, was a Special Assistant to the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel.

The guild has suspended the Nollywood actor over the allegation.

Court ends 13-year marriage over affair with pastor

An Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in the Eket Local Government Area has dissolved a 13-year marriage, over the allegation that the 36-year-old wife slept with a pastor of one of the new generational churches in the state.

The husband is also said to also be a pastor.

The presiding judge, Justice Pius Idiong, who dissolved the marriage, expressed worry over the rising cases of divorce and separation as a result of the activities of some churches and their pastors.

Idiong said, “It is a great pain that the church and its ministers, who are supposed to be agents and apostles of sustainability of the family, which the Catholic Pontiff, St. Pope John Paul described as ‘the domestic church’ are the precursors and catalysts of broken marriages and families today.”

The court said it was more worrisome that the said man of God was alleged to have given the pastor’s wife some substance to administer to her husband, which prompted the 42-year-old husband to approach the court to seek dissolution of the marriage.

Idiong said, “The couple can no longer live together in an era where domestic violence is at its peak, taking a dangerous trend and resulting in married couples taking the lives of each other.

“It is better for the couple to be alive apart, than for any of them to be lost on account of matrimonial disagreement.

“The marriage between the petitioner and the respondent, dated November 28, 2009, and celebrated in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Uyo, under the watchful eyes of the marriage registrar, is dissolved forthwith.”

The court also gave custody of the two children of the marriage, between the ages of eight and 10, to their father, “subject to the condition that their mother shall not be denied access to her children.”
