Akwa Ibom APC Congress: Probe Forgery Allegations – Group Urges APC National Leadership

A pro- APC group in Akwa Ibom State, Defenders of Akwa Ibom APC, has drawn the attention of the national leadership of the party to reports on the alleged forgery committed by officials of the newly inaugurated state leadership of the party in Akwa Ibom State.

The group in a statement issued on Tuesday drew reference to a story published in Premium Times in which the chairman and secretary of the Sheriff Banki and Yakubu Sule respectively separately deposed that their signatures were forged to get the judgment that brought Stephen Ntukekpo to office as state chairman.

It would be recalled that the Banki led congress committee had earlier declared Mr Austin Ekanem as the winner of the congress that was conducted last year.
However, Ntukekpo had filed a court action insisting that he was the person declared as winner by the congress committee.

Ntukekpo is backed by the minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
However, Ekanem is backed by several other state leaders of the party including Senator John Akpanudoedehe, former minister of petroleum, Chief Donald Etiebet, former APC governorship candidates Nsima Ekere (2019), Umana Umana (2015) among others.

Drawing the attention of the party to the development, the group in a statement issued by its coordinator, Ibok Essein warned that the party had laid the foundation for illegality in the continued recognition of Ntukekpo.

“We are worried by this development that the person foisted on us as chairman has been outed as having come to office through the wrong channel. The claim by the party’s agents to conduct the congress that their signatures were forged is enough damning evidence for the party to act to correct this abnormality.

“We say that the reign of illegality and wickedness will not lead the party anywhere and that the minority cannot afford to make progress along this path,” the group warned.

Mr Banki had alerted the APC of the forgery of his signature through a letter he sent to the then national chairman, Mr Buni, on January 11.

The letter which was copied to the Inspector General of Police, the Director General of the State Security Service, and the chairman of INEC.

“As you may recall, you appointed me as the Chairman of the APC Congress Committee to Akwa Ibom State for the Ward, LGA, and State’s Congresses, and I acquitted myself creditably,” Mr Bank said to Mr Buni in the letter.

“I submitted the results and the reports accordingly, but to my utter dismay, my attention was drawn to a suit filed in the Federal High Court, Abuja, by one Stephen Leo Ntukekpo who swore to an affidavit and attached fake results sheets where my signature was forged and he declared himself the State Chairman-elect for Akwa Ibom State,” Mr Banki said in the letter.

Disregard stomach infrastructure politicians in Akwa Ibom APC – Umana advises APC national leadership

2015 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr. Umanah Okon Umanah has advised the national leadership to restore the Augustine Ekanem led leadership of the party he insists was validly elected.

Umanah who is presently the Managing Director of the Oil and Gas Free Zone Authority lamented that those he described as food is ready politicians were the ones behind the factional crisis in the state chapter of the party.

Speaking against the background of the endorsements and commendations poured on Akpanudoedehe by party leaders at the reception for the former national secretary, at the weekend, Umana said:

“I am not surprised at the very warm way you have turned out to receive our very distinguished son. He made us very proud there is no question about that. I believe that he made Akwa Ibom proud because he served meritoriously as the National Secretary of our party. It is the first time we have had somebody from Akwa Ibom ascend that position at the national level.

“Well what we are witnessing today I don’t have anything to say because our Leader Atuekong Don Etiebet briefed you very comprehensively. And I will like to add my voice to say that “on Status quo we stand’. Because as Leader of the party in Akwa Ibom we are Law-abiding.
“We have been advised by the Lawyer of Senator John Akpanudoedehe as to what the status quo means. That is why we will continue to recognize Augustine Ekanem as the State Chairman of our party.”

Calling on the national leadership to tow the path of rule of law, Umana said:
“And we will like to appeal to the National leadership of our party that they should please save us from this distraction, so that we can focus on the task ahead, which is to win government house in 2023.

“Some of these people, you know they don’t know what we have suffered from 2015. They came when dinner has been served. Some of us were in the kitchen but when the food was ready they took over, they pushed all of us out.

“But we have determined that we will restore our party to the path of glory, because the antics of this people may lead to a situation where we may have no candidate in Akwa Ibom, and they will not care. So we are appealing to the national leadership , they should look at this matter, and the Congress that was properly conducted, there is a video, the Chairman who was designated to handle the Congress by the party, Alhaji B. Sheriff we have him on tape, on video announcing the results for goodness sake.

“He petitioned the IGP, the Director SSS that his signature was forged. We cannot run the party on the basis of criminality, we cannot. And that is why all of these leaders you find here are determined that we will stand on the truth.

” I cannot be playing that video in my house and see Ekanem being declared winner by Banky Sheriff to conduct the primaries here and somebody else suddenly becomes the Chairman.

“I congratulate my brother, he is a man of capacity, he is the caterpillar of Akwa Ibom politics, when he moves the ground will shake. So they are afraid because they know he is a caterpillar, my brother God will be with you , and may God bless APC.”

Don’t allow a repeat of Zamfara, Rivers APC disaster in Akwa Ibom, group warns

Defenders of Akwa Ibom APC, DAIA has cautioned the new Abdullahi Adamu leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC against repeating same mistakes that led to the loss of Zamfara and Rivers States in the 2019 General Election.

Speaking against the background of the party’s decision to recognize inaugurating Obong Stephen Ntukekpo as the chairman of the Akwa Ibom State chapter when the issues of the congresses that led to his mergence were still under judicial review, the group in a statement by its coordinator, Ibok Essein.

“What happened in Zamfara and Rivers States are still very fresh in our memory and it would be catastrophic for us as a party if we did not learn any lesson from the issues.”
Noting that the same issues of upholding the constitution of the party and of the Electoral Act were now at play in Akwa Ibom, the group called for caution.
“The fact is that a significant proportion of the party membership including at the grassroots and leaders have issues with the emergence of Obong Stephen Ntukekpo as chairman of the party.
“These members have in adherence to the rule of law taken up their case in the courts and it is a shock that even before their right to fair hearing is adjudicated that their rights have been abridged.
“Our warning is that the party must take heed so that the disaster of Zamfara and Rivers do not befall us in Akwa Ibom.”
Noting that the caution had become more important in the wake of the increased mobilization of the grassroots for 2023 victory, the group continued:
“Our grassroots in Akwa Ibom have more than ever been energized for victory in the forthcoming 2023 General Election. What they are asking is for things to be done properly for them to deliver Akwa Ibom from the yoke of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,” the group said.

Adamu’s first move falters as group condemns his inauguration of Akwa Ibom chairman

A group under the aegis of Defenders of Akwa Ibom APC, DAIA has condemned the inauguration on Tuesday of a new chairman for the Akwa Ibom chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC by the new national chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

The group in a statement expressed shock over what it claimed as the deliberate overlook of a court injunction restraining the party from recognizing and inaugurating Obong Stephen Ntukekpo as the chairman of the party.

“What has happened is that the leadership of the party has started on the path of illegality and against the desire of the mainstream of the party,” DIAA coordinator, Ibok Essein said in a statement.

“So long as there existed an injunction against the inauguration of Ntukekpo, it behooved the party’s leadership to have waited for the judicial process to run its course in order not to infringe on the right of everyone concerned and that is why we are especially pained by this development.”

Expressing concern that elements from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP were dictating the situation in the party, DAIA added.

“We are concerned that the godfather of the Ntukekpo is the minister of Niger Delta, Senator Godswill Akpabio, a man who as governor so much destroyed the progressives in Akwa Ibom.

“It is unfortunate that he has manourvered himself into our party and is now destroying our party from inside,” the group said.

  • ALLEGED MURDER: How Akpan killed Umoren with a black cloth – DSS tells court

ALLEGED MURDER: How Akpan killed Umoren with a black cloth – DSS tells court

An Akwa Ibom High Court sitting in Uyo has been told how the suspected killer of Iniubong Umoren, Uduak Akpan, stuffed the deceased with a black cloth to cover her mouth and prevent her from shouting.

Testifying before the trial Judge, Justice Bassey Nkanang, a member of staff of the Department of State Services, Akwa Ibom State Command, Ama Okeke, tendered evidence.

The DSS officer, who appeared in court as the 10th Prosecution Witness, told the court that the first, second and third accused persons made their statements voluntarily on June 3, 2021, June 11, 2021, and September 23, 2021, respectively.

Okeke pointed out that both the first and second accused persons were transferred to the DSS station, with their phones used for detailed analysis.

According to the DSS officer, “In the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the first accused person (Uduak-Abasi Akpan) had a conversation with the late Iniubong Umoren.

The deceased repeatedly asked if he wanted to kill her and that he had told her only if she would allow him to have sex with her

“My Lord, the first accused person (Uduak-Abasi Akpan) told our investigation team that Iniubong Umoren refused to have sex with him and struggled with him. He also told us that while the deceased was struggling with him that he observed that she sent a voice note to someone but didn’t know who she sent the voice note.

“The first accused person also said the deceased repeatedly asked if he wanted to kill her and that he had told her only if she would allow him to have sex with her. He also told us that even when he overpowered the deceased, she told him that she would allow him only if he used a condom.

“The first accused person also told the investigation team that in the process of having sex with the deceased, he removed the condom and the deceased started struggling with him again. He said while he was still on top of the deceased, she carried iron and hit him on the forehead.

“He said that, in order not for the deceased to shout, he, Uduak-Abasi, now collected a black cloth, stuffed it into her mouth, and tied her mouth. He said he then used a standby stabilizer and hit her on the abdomen. From that point, the first accused said the deceased started bleeding profusely. He told us that he became afraid as if she had already died.

He also said late Iniubong Umoren was not the first person he had lured to his house in Nung Ikono Obio

“The first accused also said he used the jeans-trouser of the deceased to strangle her completely. The first accused told us that he now stepped out of the house and went to the compound, found a space, and dug a 3-feet grave, and then went back to where the body of the deceased was, dragged the body with her jeans-trouser tied on her neck to the dug grave.

“He further told the investigating team that he wrapped her (deceased) body with a blanket, and with her mouth still tied, and the Jeans on her neck and buried her in the grave. He further told us that the incident happened between 13:00 hours to 20:00 hours, on the 29th of April, 2021.”

The witness told the court that the first accused further told them that after burying the deceased in the shallow grave, he went back to where he killed Iniubong Umoren, cleaned the blood, and tidied up the place so that nobody would know what happened.

Okeke further testified that, in the course of their investigation, and also an interview with the first accused, he told them that the second accused person, Frank Akpan, who is his father, was not around when the incident happened.

Witness said Uduak-Abasi told them that, during the early hours of 30th of April, 2021, when he opened his Facebook page, he saw news with his picture and that of late Iniubong Umoren, trending that he was the one who kidnapped her.

“The first accused person said that it was what made him tell his father that he wanted to go to Calabar to meet the sister – the third accused person. My Lord, the first accused also told us that he traveled to Calabar through Oron, with a speed boat, taking along with him, the bag and phone of the deceased.

“He (first accused) said he dropped the bag and phone of the deceased in the third accused person’s house. He also said late Iniubong Umoren was not the first person he had lured to his house in Nung Ikono Obio,” Okeke testified.

Okeke further told the Court that with the confessional statement of the first accused, his team traveled to Calabar, and was able to track and recover the deceased’s Samsung Galaxy phone, adding that two persons who were arrested in respect of the phone were currently standing trial.

Justice Nkanang admitted the Samson Galaxy phone tendered in evidence by the prosecution and marked it as Exhibit 13.

The judge also admitted in evidence, two phones belonging to the first accused person, and two other Nokia phones belonging to the 2nd accused person; and marked the four phones as Exhibits 14, 15, 16, and 17.

However, the prosecution, at the point of tendering the confessional statement of the first accused person in evidence, his lawyer, Samson Adula, raised an objection on the grounds that the statement was not made voluntarily by his client.

Justice Nkanang adjourned the case till February 15, for a trial-within-trial to be conducted, so as to determine the claim of involuntariness of the statement.

  • Akwa Ibom: Who the cap fits in 2023 – By Udeme Nana

Akwa Ibom: Who the cap fits in 2023 – By Udeme Nana

    By Udeme Nana

Celestine Udofia is a vulcanizer who plies his trade opposite a popular hotel in Uyo. The other day, one was curious to find out why he sets up about 6 in the morning and works till 8 in the evening. I wondered how much money he makes daily and was shocked to be told that he rakes in at least N50k daily. ‘I have been on this for more than 20 years and have built a house for myself and all my children are graduates’ he confessed proudly. This shows that even as the economy is struggling, Nigerians are not giving up on their daily grind to make a living. Across the nation, a lot of people, whether motor cyclists, Keke, taxi, bus, lorry, trailer or truck drivers or wheel barrow pushers are crisscrossing our streets and roads a thousand and more times to pursue the elusive daily bread. They are also making useful contributions to the economy. Others, including petty traders, barbers and dry cleaners are also pining away. In Akwa Ibom State, our streets are getting busy and busy every day with ordinary people eking out a living. The robust bustle and hustle by the very young, not too young, old and the very old daily from dawn to dusk seems to drive the economy of developing societies more than half of the public service salaried workforce.

These people belong to the informal economy, and are not mobilized for a more effective role – play in the economy. But they are the engine of any economy contributing to its development given the chain in their activities amongst others. They need to be mobilized and organized like MSMEs. According to World Bank, MSMEs constitute about 90 percent of businesses in any nation. They provide 50 percent of employment world-wide. In most emerging economies, MSMEs that have been captured by the formal sector drive GDP by 40 percent.

According to SMEDAN/NBS’ Survey, Nigeria’s SMEs contribute nearly 50 percent to the nation’s GDP and accounts for 80 percent of employment in the country. Indeed, the sector is crucial to the nation’s economic growth, particularly in reducing poverty incidence. Unfortunately, however, even the MSMEs are the least factored into the country’s economic planning. This is even worse in the states.

For us in this state, the challenge is how best to channel the boundless energies of our people and resources to transit from a largely informal economy to an industrial one. The fact that we have an airport and airline is an advantage. Completing the MRO part of the airport, the Deep sea port, the vehicle assembly plant, the BUA Petrochemical complex, the fertilizer project planned for the state by some investors is therefore very compelling. Getting them into production is the major catalyst the state requires to build a more sophisticated and productive economy.

But who will superintend over these? Who has the pedigree, the clout, skills to fast track these ? And what would we need to identify in someone that could give us the hope that such a person has the potentials to make the difference in turning around the informal economy and linking it up with big industrial concerns. Executive leadership in a competitive society goes beyond sophistry and playing to the gallery. It demands deep thinking, big picture visioning, planning, organizing, discipline, motivation, monitoring, evaluation, execution.

It is important to head hunt for an adaptable person who truly understands planning and has the knack to go through the rigors of systematized planning and the monitoring and evaluation process that ensures success of a plan. It needs someone who stands on time tested principles and values of hard work, honesty and integrity. A person whose credibility is not cloudy. Someone who is open minded; approachable, a listener who has the ability to motivate and mentor. The State needs someone who respects and responds to others with readiness to go through ideas brought by someone else, modify them, and implement with deference to the originators without feeling diminished in any way ; someone who is not bossy, but trusts others and delegates responsibilities without looking away, without abdicating his roles.

There is a need to unlock Udom Uko Inoyo, a tried and tested manager of men and resources, who has had both public service and best – of – the – pack private sector experience at the highest level. He can get our people back to work. He can lead by inspiring people to do things they never thought were possible to do. Udom Inoyo is deep, visionary, innovative, mature, statesmanly and widely exposed. He engages people and respects superior opinions. He has the contacts that would be tapped to stimulate economic growth in our environment. The Udom Inoyo I know will challenge the prevalent culture parasitism among a once dignified, hardworking, proud people who have now become parasites to professional politicians and political office holders. He has the capacity to explore possibilities where the citizenry would work to earn a living ; restoring their dignity and self pride in the process. Among the contenders for the Governorship of Akwa Ibom State in 2023, Mr. Udom Inoyo holds the correct key to mobilize and organize the ‘wretched of the earth’ – vibrant and useful but forgotten sections of the populace to become a more effective key contributors to economic growth. He has the profile to attract big investors to the state. Investors follow persons. They do not just venture with their funds into locations with unknown leaders. The cap fits him. The 2023 moment requires a solid pair of hands. Udom Inoyo has those hands.
