Abia Gov addresses concerns over $125m Islamic bank loan

Gov. Alex Otti of Abia has addressed concerns surrounding the $125 million loan from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), saying that the conditions were generous.

Otti, while responding to questions during the monthly media parley on Friday in Umuahia, allayed fears expressed at some quarters concerning the IDB loan.

“There is nothing to worry about; the conditions are generous and by the time I looked at it, I was actually surprised,” he said.

The Federal Executive Council had at its meeting on Wednesday, approved the facility to finance the Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development Project, but not yet drawn.

Otti, however, said that one should only express worry about what happened to the exchange rate.

“If the money was borrowed prior to May 2023, the exchange rate at that time was under N500.

“But today, if you are paying back you will begin to look for thrice that money and that is where the issue of deployment comes in,” he said.

Otti promised that his administration would continue to give prior attention to the health care sector, saying that 120 out of the 200 primary health centres for rehabilitation had been completed.

He said that the government was also fixing all the 22 general hospitals in the state, adding that Obingwa General Hospital would soon be completed and inaugurated before the end of the month.

The governor said that the government was working to upgrade education at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

He said that 221 primary and secondary schools were receiving attention in the first phase of rehabilitation.

Otti explained that the implementation of the free and compulsory education from primary to  junior secondary school at the beginning of the year,  had led to massive enrollment in public schools.

The governor also said that a lot of roads were receiving attention, stressing that about 50 of them were being addressed by direct labour, while 30 were on contract.

He expressed happiness that some of the challenges with funding had been dealt with, given the recent passage of the supplementary budget by the State House of Assembly.

The governor addressed other developmental efforts of his administration, especially in the areas of electricity, agriculture and others.

Abia governor, Otti celebrates Peter Obi at 64

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has extended a heartfelt birthday tribute to the former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Gregory Obi, CON, as he marks his 64th birthday.

TheNewsGuru reports that the Governor on Saturday, July 19, 2025, described Obi as “a brother and friend” whose life has remained an embodiment of “compassion, integrity, and progress.

“Today, we celebrate not just a birthday, but a life that has consistently echoed the values of compassion, integrity, and progress,” the message began”.

Governor Otti praised Obi for redefining leadership in Nigeria through an approach rooted in selfless service, visionary action, and unwavering dedication to the principles of nation-building.

“Mr. Peter Obi has proven time and again that leadership is not just about power but service. His enduring commitment to national development and humanitarian causes continues to inspire and uplift many lives,” Otti noted.

Highlighting Obi’s far-reaching influence across sectors, Otti stated that “from classrooms to boardrooms, communities to hospitals, his influence is felt in every space where equity and growth are sought.”

He further commended the former Anambra governor’s consistency, noting that “his example reminds us that true leadership is not just spoken but lived. And in every stride, Mr. Obi has shown that he is who he says he is.”

The Abia Governor, who ran on the same Labour Party platform as Peter Obi in the 2023 elections, also commended Obi’s personal attributes — discipline, humility, and a relentless pursuit of a better Nigeria — which he said continue to serve as a compass for emerging leaders.

“We continue to learn from his discipline, humility, and relentless pursuit of a better society. Through him, we see what it means to lead with heart and serve with vision.

“This is wishing you more fruitful years in good health, wisdom, and God’s endless blessings. Congratulations, Okwute!” Otti concluded.

Otti reads riot act to appointees

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, on Wednesday, warned political office holders and senior public officers to step up their performance or shown the way out.

Otti issued the warning, while addressing the  2025 Second Quarter Abia Executive Council Strategy Retreat at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia.

The retreat has as its theme: “Sustaining the Momentum: Leadership in Execution.”

He said that his administration would no longer tolerate underperforming officers, adding that the retreat was mandatory for all senior state’s public service officers.

He urged them to embrace continuous learning, collaboration, and regular self-assessment to sustain the momentum of reforms and development efforts across the state.

He said that the outcomes of the retreats were expected to drive government’s holistic transformation agenda.

“These sessions help us assess progress, measure against key milestones, and accelerate delivery within available resources,” he said.

The governor, who referenced  a biblical principle on unfruitful trees, reiterated his zero-tolerance for mediocrity in leadership.

“I’m sure you recall the biblical instruction about trees that do not bear good fruit,” he said.

He commended his team’s progress but urged them not to benchmark themselves against past administrations, which he said were marked by mediocrity.

Otti called on participants to maximise mentorship opportunities from members of the Global Economic Advisory Council present at the retreat.

He further emphasised that consistent underperformance was a result of personal choice and not the lack of opportunities for improvement.

“Leadership is not perfection but the courage to learn, unlearn, and relearn,” he said.

In a remark, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, described the theme as both a recognition of progress and renewed call to action.

Kalu said that effective execution remains the real test of leadership credibility.

He expressed the need for discipline and collaboration to translate the visions of the administration into tangible results.

The event was attended by top government officials, development partners, and members of the Abia Global Economic Advisory Council.

Gunmen attack, shoot at Gov Alex Otti’s aide, Chukwumerije

Chaka Chukwumerije, an aide to Abia State Governor, Alex Otti was on Sunday attacked after unknown gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in Umuahia.

Dike Chukwumerije, brother to the victim confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday where he noted that the attack took place while the commissioner was returning from Okigwe to Umuahia.

He was on his way from Okigwe to Umuahia, when the car behind him opened fire. It was not his time to die. So, he and the three others with him escaped unscathed, even though the car was riddled with bullets,” he wrote.

Chukwumerije, who has served as a Commissioner under Governor Alex Otti for the past two years, was praised by his brother for his integrity and dedication to public service.

He noted that his brother had been a loyal supporter of Governor Otti for over a decade, standing by him through successive election cycles, even in defeat.

“No, we didn’t send him off with a wish list. All we asked of him was – do not bring us shame. Don’t take what is not yours. And use every resource within your power to help our society become a better place for us all,” Dike said.

He said: “Every election since, at least, 2015 he has poured his heart, soul, and resources into campaigns. And when his team did not win, even when they were clearly rigged out, he came back home and licked his wounds in quietness and dignity.”

He continued, “Where we come from, no matter how provoked, we tend to keep a civil tongue. So, he has always played the sort of politics that has sat well with my own conscience.”

Reflecting on Governor Otti’s leadership, Dike said he now understands his brother’s long-standing loyalty.

In two years, Abia has turned around… I don’t praise politicians lightly… But he is doing the job, and doing it to a level that we have not seen in Abia in many, many years. And, today, I am proud to be Abian,” he said.

He lamented the danger faced by those committed to public service, blaming the country’s socio-political system for prioritizing mediocrity over merit.

The author said: “Unfortunately, it is people like this—who are totally, selflessly committed to public service—that are too often the victims of our current socio-political order… Those who are comfortable with doing things anyhow-anyhow are safe and ascending. While those who are not, are not.”

Despite the attack, Dike remained resolute, expressing gratitude that his brother’s life was spared.

Govt. has paid full compensation to Abia Airport landowners – Otti

Gov. Alex Otti, on Saturday, confirmed that the State Government has paid full compensation to owners of the lands acquired for the Abia Airport project in Nsulu.

Otti made the confirmation during a Grand Civic Reception/Appreciation Ceremony organised by stakeholders in Isiala Ngwa North and South Local Government Areas (LGAs) at Okpuala-Ngwa, in Isiala Ngwa North LGA.

He said: “Before any construction began, we ensured that 100 per cent compensation was paid to all landowners.

“If there is anyone yet to receive payment, it is likely due to issues like incorrect account details or disputes over ownership, not government negligence.”

The governor also announced government’s plans to build a fully-fledged airport city, amongst other projects around the airport corridor.

According to him, the complex would feature a three or four-star hotel, shopping plazas, markets, and a Nigerian Air Force base.

He disclosed that access roads to the site were already under construction, with a completion deadline set for December.

He emphasised that the siting of the airport was based on expert recommendations and strategic considerations, particularly its accessibility to both Umuahia and Aba, the state’s major urban centres.

He recounted how many Nsulu natives have expressed gratitude to the government, with one woman reportedly saying she earned more in compensation than she ever would have made farming the land in a lifetime.

“This is a people-oriented government and development should not be a punishment to the people, it should uplift them,” he said.

The governor dismissed speculations that his administration intended to marginalise a particular group or region with respect to the airport project.

“Those who doubted our intentions now know better because we are not like the old regime and we are here to serve all Abians, without discrimination,” he said.

Otti affirmed his government’s commitment to even development across the state, highlighting ongoing projects in Ukwa, Umuahia, and Aba.

He underscored Aba’s pivotal role in the state’s economic strategy, saying that revenue generated from Aba would help fund development in other regions.

Otti further highlighted the success of the state’s free education policy, adding that it had led to a significant increase in school enrollment.

In a speech, the lawmaker representing Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency, Chief Ginger Onwusibe, urged the governor to seek re-election in 2027.

Onwusibe further declared that “there is no vacancy in Government House, Umuahia”, until 2031.

“You have done excellently well, and we urge you to contest again in 2027.

“We, the people of Isiala Ngwa North and South, have resolved to work together and ensure victory across all 20 wards in both LGAs,” he said.

A Labour Party chieftain in the area, Sen. Darlington Nwokocha, commended Otti for focusing on long-term development goals that prioritise infrastructure and human capital development.

“We are seeing tangible progress – roads, healthcare, education, and empowerment.

“These are not just projects for today, but foundations for sustainable development that will outlive this administration and drive socioeconomic growth in Abia,” Nwokocha said.

The Chairman of the occasion, Mr Obinna Anaba, congratulated the governor, describing his triumph as a victory for justice and good governance.

Anaba commended the administration’s rapid strides in infrastructure development, social welfare, and economic reform.

He pointed out that the governor had already proven that effective leadership is possible.

Anaba, speaking on behalf of both LGAs, affirmed the people’s full support for the governor and expressed confidence he would continue to deliver democracy dividend across the state.

In a remark, a businessman from the area, Mr Cyril Ishmael, said that the Otti-led administration had inspired renewed investor-confidence in the state through visible infrastructural projects and reforms.

Also, the President of  Ngwa National Association in USA and Canada, Dr Ugochukwu Agu, expressed satisfaction with the governor’s performance, particularly in the education sector.

Agu said that the Ngwa Community abroad had launched support programmes to align with the administration’s developmental goals.

“Our people are pleased with what you are doing.

“We have introduced scholarships for students and undergraduates, and launched a skill acquisition programme.

“We have also built a facility, called the Unity Complex, where these empowerment programmes will be administered,” he said.

No fewer than 100 members of the Peoples Democratic Party and Accord Party formally announced their defection to the Labour Party at the event.

  • I will borrow when absolutely necessary- Gov Otti vows

I will borrow when absolutely necessary- Gov Otti vows

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has said his administration will only borrow money to run the state when it is absolutely necessary.

The Governor made the vow in Umuahia on Wednesday during a lecture series to mark his two years in office.

Otti, while responding to some of the issues raised by the lecturer, Dr Idika Kalu, a onetime Finance Minister, said borrowing was not to be done recklessly adding that he would only borrow when necessary.

The governor said he had to inculcate financial discipline and responsibility in the system to get the state to a greater level.

He said he had been paying workers and pensioners having found that it made more economic sense to pay than to keep the money at the bank.

“We shall commit the remaining two years of this term to institutionalizing the reforms that have been initiated.

“Collectively, we shall make Abia the hub of transformational ideas; we shall not be tired of listening to new ideas, for that is the path to continuous growth and progress,” Otti stated.

The governor thanked Dr Kalu for accepting to deliver the second anniversary lecture of his administration.

Otti said the state put the lecture together to “talk to ourselves honestly and evaluate how far we have come, what we have done right, and what we can do better.”

In his lecture, the one-time Minister of Finance, urged the governor to borrow to expand the projects that would create value for the state.

The octogenarian maintained that such borrowing was not bad once it was done in the interest of the state.

The lecture was titled : Two years of transformation; Sustaining the momentum”.

Kalu also urged Otti to use the media in major roles in his development efforts because of their powers to cause change.

“The media can help this nation get back to life so don’t give them minor roles but give them key roles,” Kalu said.

Kalu commended Otti for his numerous projects some of which he said he had seen delivered while some are still ongoing.

He urged the government to always abide by the rule of law and to show examples of how things should be done rightly and uprightly.

Kalu harped on the need to punish errant persons who instilled impunity in the society noting that a society where impunity reigned was not modernized.

  • 2027: Otti has no plan to join APC – Labour Party

2027: Otti has no plan to join APC – Labour Party

The Labour Party leadership says Gov. Alex Otti of Abia has no plan to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the 2027 general elections.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Obiora Ifoh, stated this in an interview on Friday in Abuja.

Rumours have been rife over plans by no fewer than five first term opposition governors to defect to APC, preparatory to the 2027 general elections.

The governors, according to media reports, are Alex Otti of Abia, Peter Mba, Enugu; Sheriff Oborevwori, Delta; Siminalayi Fubara, Rivers and Umoh Eno, Akwa Ibom.

While Mbah, Fubara, Eno, Oborevwori are PDP governors, Otti belongs to Labour Party, with both parties currently locked in post-2023 election crises.

Ifoh, in the interview, however, said that the purported plan by Otti to dump LP for APC was farther from the truth.

“It is a mere rumour and I hope it remains so. For us in Labour Party, we are in touch with our governor, Dr Alex Otti, and he has assured us that he is not going anywhere, ahead of 2027.

“We believe that he will stay with us, irrespective of some of the issues which we are working hard to resolve,” he said.

The national publicity secretary, who said that defection from one political party to another was nothing new in any democratic setting, however, said that Otti was not thinking about teaming up with the ruling APC.

“The courts have come up several times to make interpretation as regards Section 84 of the 1999 Constitution and many people who had defected at one time or the other had been challenged in court.

“So, if five governors are planning to defect, it won’t be a new thing, as it had happened in the past,” he said.

Ifoh attributed the rumoured defection to the fact that some governors in the opposition had been having some challenges in controlling their states.

He insisted that the speculated rumour of the only Labour Party governor had no substance or validity.

“We are good in Labour Party and our governor is with us, and we are hoping that by 2027, we will have more governors in our fold,” he said.

Recall that a recent media report indicated that the body language of some governors, particularly from PDP was tilting toward moving to the ruling APC.

The report further indicated that some of the governor have either been visiting President Bola Tinubu privately or have him inaugurating projects in their states.

It was also reported that the Chairman of Progressives Governors’ Forum, Sen. Hope Uzodimma of Imo, had been wooing the opposition governors to join APC.

Over time, Ojeikere has climbed the ranks, serving as a director and later as a permanent secretary, before being appointed Head of Service.

“This is a landmark appointment, considering the fact that he is not an indigene of Abia State,

“However, His Excellency, Governor Alex Otti, strongly believes in meritocracy.

“To him, there is no dividing line between an Abia citizen and a resident. Once you live in Abia, you are part and parcel of the state,” Kanu stated.

How to find true joy of Christmas – Gov Otti

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has urged Christians to embrace the responsibility of sharing, saying that “true joy of Christmas is found in the wonders of sharing, loving and caring”.

The governor’s advice is contained in his Christmas message to the people of the state, made available to newsmen in Umuahia, on Wednesday.

He stated that Christmas is another opportunity for Christians to reflect on the love of God for humanity through the incarnation of Jesus Christ, which led to eternal redemption of mankind.

“As a community of God’s people, called to the promise of renewal and rebirth on this special anniversary of the birth of Christ the Redeemer, we are invited to reflect on the privileges and blessings that have been showered on us by God.

“We are called to embrace with a cheerful heart, the responsibility of sharing what we have received with our neighbours, especially those in need, because the true joy of Christmas is found in the wonders of sharing, loving and caring,” Otti stated.

He expressed gratitude to God for granting residents, visitors, and returning indigenes of Abia, a safe journey back home.

The governor added that the State Government had taken steps to  put adequate security measures in place to  guarantee the safety of lives and property during and after the festive season.

He stated: “We have painstakingly put in place, adequate security measures to guarantee the safety of everyone, so we encourage you to visit with friends and relatives to celebrate together in an atmosphere of love and freedom.

“We have also recorded some major gains in expanding our governance footprints to all the communities in the state through road infrastructure projects and strategic development initiatives in health, education, entrepreneurship support and social protection.

“While you are in the state for this Yuletide, do well to move round and observe the changes that have taken place since your last visit.

“You will see indisputable evidence of our development strides all around you because we have been very deliberate in spreading the fruits of good governance across communities.”

He thanked the people of Abia for having faith in and supporting his administration and expressed his determination to ensure sustainable socio-economic growth in the state.

Otti also urged the people to apply the principles of prudence and modesty in all their engagements during this season.

He emphasised the need for people to avoid excessive consumption, especially of alcoholic beverages, to stay away completely from hard drugs and avoid ingesting dangerous substances.

He further urged road users to adhere to road traffic regulations when using the road, and be mindful of other road users.

“Let us collectively commit to safety by restraining ourselves from going overboard in our celebrations,” he said.

Otti expressed gratitude to God for making it possible for everyone to witness another Christmas celebration and prayed that this year’s celebration would be filled with joy and peace.
