Gov. Alex Otti freezes State accounts, dissolves boards, makes appointments

Gov. Alex Otti of Abia has directed the immediate freezing of all the State Government accounts and those of agencies domiciled in banks and other financial institutions in the country.

Otti’s directive is contained in a statement issued in Umuahia on Tuesday by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma.

Ekeoma stated that with the notice, “all banks and other financial institutions in the country are directed to immediately cease from honouring any cheques, documents, instruments or directives of any kind not expressly approved by or emanating from him”.

He also stated that the governor directed the immediate dissolution of all boards of the government agencies and parastatals and subsequently ordered the chief executives of those organisations to hand over to those next in line to them.

Otti, a former bank chief, assumed office on Monday, May 29, as the fifth democratically-elected governor of Abia on the platform of the Labour Party.

Ekeoma further disclosed that the governor had approved the appointment of Prof. Kenneth Kalu as the Secretary to the State Government.

According to the statement, all the appointments take immediate effect.

What Alex Otti said after swearing in as Governor

Dr Alex Otti of Labour Party (LP) has been sworn in as the fifth democratically elected Governor of Abia State.

Otti was sworn in by the Abia Chief Judge, Justice Lilian Abai, at exactly 12:31p.m. after his Deputy, Mr Ikechukwu Emetu, took oath of office by 12:11p.m.

The swearing-in took place at the Umuahia Township Stadium in Umuahia on Monday.

Otti, who had in 2015 and 2019 contested to become Governor of Abia on the platform of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), was able to clinch the position on his third attempt on the platform of the LP.

Otti, a native of Nvosi community in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state, scored 175,465 votes to defeat his closest rival, Chief Okey Ahiwe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who had 88,529 votes during the March 18 governorship election.

In his inaugural speech, Otti said that he was committed to  bequeathing a better Abia to his successor, adding that task forces had been set up to evolve a vision and roadmap for further development of Abia.

He said that his emergence as governor marked the beginning of an era of rebuilding the values, infrastructure and fiscal coffers of the state.

“Today I stand before you, my good people of Abia State, to declare once again, boldly that in line with my campaign theme you should ‘Weep No More, Help is Here’.

“My task is to dry your tears and help you to rediscover who you are and lead you back to the pathway of sustainable growth,  development and prosperity,” he added.

He said that his administration would establish a harmonious relationship with the legislative and judicial arms of government, considering their roles as critical to the  success of the government and prosperity of Abia.

He said the state government would work with the media,  traditional institutions, faith-based institutions, to build harmony and understanding in the state for the good of the people of Abia.

Otti said that under his watch, as Governor of Abia, there would be zero tolerance for corruption and  Abia Government would not be a “government of excuses”.

“We have a treasury that has been criminally ravaged to the extent that we have an alleged N50 billion in unpaid salaries, gratuities, and pensions.

“Our local and foreign debt overhang is reported to be in the region of N200 billion, in addition to other debts to contractors.

“We have a poorly motivated workforce, extreme youth unemployment, collapsed physical infrastructure, a terribly frail primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare delivery system.

“These are in addition to a broken educational system, urban waste disposal crisis and a large army of citizens, especially civil servants who feel blatantly betrayed by successive administrations that wilfully and unconscionably abandoned them.“

Otti extended an arm of fellowship to members of opposition political parties and urged them to join him in delivering good governance to further improve the standard of living in Abia.

He commended the officials of the  Independent National Electoral Commission (lNEC) that showed courage and commitment to preserve democracy and ensured that the will of the electorate prevailed.

Otti thanked Mr Peter Obi, the LP Presidential Candidate and the party’s leadership for projecting the ideals of transparent and good governance.

He also thanked the people of Abia for their support and promised to serve the people of Abia and  meet their high expectations.

The dignitaries that graced the event included Dr Ahmed Datti, LP Vice Presidential Candidate, Mr Julius Abure, National Chairman of LP, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe, former Vice President of Nigeria.

  • Alex Otti raises alarm over INEC’s move to withdraw certificate of return

Alex Otti raises alarm over INEC’s move to withdraw certificate of return

The Abia state Governor-elect, Dr Alex Otti has raised alarm over alleged plot by the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC, to withdraw his Certificate of Return and re-issue same to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), candidate, Mr. Okey Ahiwe.

Recall that a Kano Federal High Court on Friday last week sacked Labour Party candidates in Abia and Kano states over alleged failure of the Party to submit it’s membership register to the commission 30 days before the party’s primaries.

In a press statement jointly signed by Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to the Abia Governor-Elect and Njoku Jerry Ajike State Publicity Secretary Labour Party, said the alleged “sponsored acts of treason against Abia shall have severe consequences.”

The statement reads in part:“The Abia Labour Party and the Governor-Elect, Dr. Alex Otti, have uncovered yet another treasonable plot by agents of Abia State government on one hand, and a Chieftain of APC on the other, in connivance with some corrupt officials in INEC and the Judiciary to procure yet another tainted order from yet another court in the North purporting to have removed the Abia Governor-Elect, Dr. Alex Otti.

“The felons behind these heinous acts would then proceed to collect a “Certificate of Return” from their allies in INEC to create confusion on May 29.

“Certain individuals from Abia who are working assiduously in secrete with both the PDP/Abia state government and the APC Chieftain respectively, just recently boasted that Abia would have an Interim Government led by a Judge. Large amount of money in foreign currency stolen from Abia treasury has been set aside for this exercise.

“While we make bold to tell these enablers of anarchy that their plot is already doomed, we must also warn that these actions which represent a fulfilment of the threats made by agents of Abia State government to make the state ungovernable over their defeat at the last elections, would have severe consequences should the perpetrators refuse to stop and give peace a chance.

“It’s strange that the same elements who had since gone to the Tribunal to challenge the outcome of the election are no longer confident in following the route provided by the law, but have rather resorted to impunity that would disrupt the peace and security of our people and our state.

“Finally, the Abia Governor-Elect, Dr. Alex Otti and his party, the Labour Party wish to reassure Abians once again, that the Divine Mandate unanimously given to him and his party by Abians remains Sacrosant, Safe and Secure, and that under no circumstance would these civilian coupists and criminal usurpers and interlopers be allowed to steal it.”

Abia Governor-elect, Otti not sacked by court – Aide

Mr Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Abia Governor-elect, Dr Alex Otti, on Friday, urged the public to disregard the purported sack of his principal by a Federal High Court in Kano.

Ekeoma made the request while reacting to the media report at a news briefing in Umuahia.

He described the judgment of the court as “baseless, unfounded and misleading”.

He further described the process as a “legal coup”.

He said that “the perpetrators were not courageous enough to confront Otti in the open.

“Otti was never joined as a party for fear that his eminently qualified lawyers would take the perpetrators to the cleaners,” he said.

Ekeoma further said that the court did not issue any Order on Abia LP candidates nor Otti “because it was conscious of its powers and careful not to fall into the booby trap set for it by the perpetrators”.

“The court specifically stated in Clause 9 of the judgment that the candidates that participated in the election in Abia are not parties before this court and as such the court lacks the jurisdiction to make an order for the issuance of Certificate of Return to them.

“The Federal High Court in Abia had entertained similar cases as  pre-election matters involving some PDP candidates versus LP candidates, and  the matters were adjudicated upon to the Supreme Court.

“In all the cases, LP won at the Federal High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.

“The case brought by the petitioners is a pre-election matter and under Section 285(14)(a) of the Electoral Act, the petitioners have no locus standi as they were not  aspirants in LP,” he said

He also argued that the Court  in Kano lacked the jurisdiction over Abia, arguing that it was impossible for any decision emanating from it  to have effect on Otti.

Ekeoma urged the people not to panic.

“Otti in the next few days will be sworn in as governor to enable him to commence the process of rebuilding the state.

Recall that a section of the media reported that the court, presided over by Justice M.N Yunusa, nullified the candidacy of all those that participated in the 2023 General Elections on LP’s platform in Abia and Kano.

The suit was filed by one Ibrahim Haruna against LP and the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The court had ruled that the LP’s failure to submit its membership register to INEC within 30 days before its primaries, amounted to a violation of the Electoral Act.

  • Abia PDP to challenge victory of Governor-elect, Alex otti

Abia PDP to challenge victory of Governor-elect, Alex otti

The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, on Wedneday, said it would challenge the declaration of the Governor-elect, Alex otti, at the election petition tribunal.

Otti, the candidate of the Labour Party in the March 18, 2023 governorship poll was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission after polling a total of 175,467, to defeat his closet rival and the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Okey Ahiwe, who garnered 88,529 votes.

Although Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, had congratulated Otti, and urged the candidates who lost in the election not to challenge the outcome of the election to avoid distractions to the incoming governor, but the PDP State Working Committee acted otherwise.

In a statement by the Abia PDP Vice Chairman and acting State Publicity Secretary, Elder Abraham Amah, stated that the party will challenge the outcome of the election in six local government areas where the BIVAS machine was allegedly not used for accreditation of voters.

The statement read, “The Abia PDP State Working Committee and the enlarged State Executive Committee met today and reviewed the results after collecting all the materials used in the conduct of the just concluded governorship and state House of Assembly elections and has decided to go to court to challenge the results of the Abia guber election, especially in six local government areas where the BIVAS machines were not used.

It added that “the decision is coming on the heels of members of the Labour Party taking its our candidates that won elections to court despite the honest and wise advise and appeal of the Abia state governor Okezie Ikpeazu, that the winners of the election including the governor-elect, Alex Otti should be spared the burden of litigation which only serves to distract public officers from performing their duties and responsibilities.

“Abia PDP is shocked to note that at a time when it is making arrangements for a seamless and peaceful transition for the new government, it is the same Labour Party that was declared the winner that is trying to torpedo the process.

“Subsequently, the legal department of the Abia PDP will release the details of its petitions in the next 24 hours and head to the Election Petition Tribunal to challenge the declaration of Alex Otti of the Labour Party as the winner of the March 18, 2023 governorship election.

The party, however, call on the people of Abia to remain calm, peaceful and steadfast.

  • Labour Party’s Alex Otti reacts after winning Abia governorship election

Labour Party’s Alex Otti reacts after winning Abia governorship election

The Abia Governor-elect, Dr Alex Otti of the Labour Party (LP), has assured the citizens that his administration will unite rather than divide the state.

Otti gave the assurance in his acceptance speech on Wednesday after he was declared the winner of Saturday’s governorship election.

He spoke at his Campaign Office, near the Government House on the Bank Road, Umuahia, which overflowed with supporters.

The teeming crowd blocked the thoroughfare for several hours, dancing and jubilating over the LP’s landslide in Saturday’s poll.

Otti said:  “With deep humility and a profound sense of responsibility, I wholeheartedly accept your mandate to be your chief servant for the next four years.

“Before I go on, I must first dedicate this victory to God the Father Almighty, who makes everything beautiful in His own time.

“I also dedicate it to the millions of Abia citizens who have been the unfortunate victims of bad governance these past decades.”

Otti expressed gratitude to every resident, including indigenes and non-indigenes, that took part in his election.

He said: “As you are all aware, this was my third attempt at contesting for this office, in my quest to implement my long-held vision of rebuilding Abia as truly God’s own state.

“At this third attempt, it pleased God to give us victory.

“In the words of one Labour Party stalwart, ‘The siege is over’!

“With our votes and the collective will of the people, we have ‘broken the gates of hell and cast its bars of iron asunder.

“As recorded in the holy book, the kingdom of hell shall not prevail against us.”

Otti described his victory as “a call to service.

“Even as I come out of a bruising and long drawn out campaign, I know that this is just the beginning of the journey.

“There is a lot of work to be done and we must get all hands on deck to ensure that we take back our state and bring the much sought-after dividend of democracy.

“You voted us to serve you and not to be served.

“You voted us to alleviate your sufferings and not to compound and multiply them.

“This is a service that comes with unusually high sense of devotion and commitment given our checkered history as a people.”

Speaking further, he said: I promised you that I will serve you as the governor of all Abia people and all citizens living in Abia, irrespective of clan, religious persuasion or political leaning.

“I see my mandate as cutting across all strata of our people and I once more promise to use the resources accruing to all Abia people for the benefit of all the residents.

“I will like to assure us that we hold no bitterness against anyone and will not go on any revenge mission against anyone.

“If in the process of getting here, we have wronged anyone, kindly find a space in your heart to forgive.

“We have equally forgiven anyone that wronged us.

“This will be a government that would unite everyone in this state as we are all brothers and sisters.”

According to him, there shall be no discrimination whatsoever in the amenities that each person is able to access in our government.

“I made a firm promise to all civil servants and pensioners owed salaries, pensions and emoluments that an immediate payments plan would be put in place to ensure that this gets the priority it deserves.”

The governor-elect said that he was very much aware and prepared to deal with the issues of infrastructure decay, “which have continued to militate against our growth and development as a state.

“This will be tackled head-on,” he said, adding that amenities would be evenly spread amongst the citizenry.

“I made a firm promise to all civil servants and pensioners owed salaries, pensions and emoluments that an immediate payment plan would be put in place to ensure that this gets the priority it deserves.

“Nevertheless, I caution that we all will need to put in our best and row together in one direction.

“There is no magic wand that can fix all the rot and decay noticed in virtually all segments of the system since the past years.

“For us to have sustainable development, it would require very painstaking and elaborate layout of master plans to enable us tackle the menace of flooding and re-engineer our cities, especially Aba, Umuahia and other cities that would be developed in order to support our urban renewal projects.

“We therefore plead for patience and understanding as we first tackle the immediate challenges and work on the major ones.

“We remain resolute in our drive to eliminate poverty and create sustainable wealth for our people.”

“We trust God for His enablement to offer our services to Abia people in such a way that we would not disappoint you.

“We shall implement our manifesto, which is a revered pact between our administration and the good people of Abia state,” he said.

Otti reassured the people that he would run an open, transparent and accountable government devoid of waste and profligacy.

“Our doors will remain wide open and our channels of communication will remain unfettered so that your worthy contributions and suggestions will be a guiding light,” he said.

He thanked his wife, Priscilla, children and friends, who offered him immeasurable support throughout his struggle for the governorship position.

He also complimented the candidates of other political parties that ran the race with him, with particular reference to Chief Okey Ahiwe (PDP), Prof. Gregory Ibe (APGA) and Bishop Sunday Onuoha (ADC), amongst others.

Otti also expressed gratitude to Ibe, Onuoha and others that openly conceded defeat and congratulated him at a time the battle of Obingwa “fictitious votes” still raged on.

Ikpeazu congratulates Otti, cautions against unnecessary litigations to distract Governor-elect

Meanwhile, Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia has urged the gubernatorial candidates of political parties in the state not to distract the governor-elect, Dr Alex Otti with court cases.

Ikpeazu said this on Wednesday in a press statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Onyebuchi Ememanka and made available to newsmen in Umuahia.

He called on the people of Abia and members of political parties in Abia to give  the governor-elect an enabling environment to run the affairs of state from May 29.

According to him, having myself spent about three and half years in different courts and having experienced first hand, the distraction such cases can cause a leader.

“I appeal to every candidate in this election not to distract the incoming administration with court cases, so that they will settle down and deal with the very demanding business of governance.

“Let us break this negative trend of subjecting our governors to endless litigations and allow them to concentrate on providing good governance.”

The governor commended Otti  for his doggedness, adding that he fought a long battle over a very long period of time and deserves commendation for his staying power and resilience.

Ikpeazu said: “Since we have come to the logical end of this battle, it is appropriate to congratulate the winner, Dr Alex Otti on his hard fought victory.

“In every battle, there will always be a winner and in the spirit of sportsmanship and love for our state, the governor-elect must see his victory as a higher call to service to the people of Abia State.”

He congratulated other candidates who took part in the election, particularly the Abia  Peoples Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate, Chief Okey Ahiwe, for their doggedness.

Ikpeazu expressed his resolve to put in place every necessary measure to ensure a seamless transition from the present administration to incoming administration.

He thanked the people of Abia for casting their votes in a very peaceful atmosphere and reminded them that peace remains very critical in the quest for sustainable development.

Ikpeazu charged  the people of Abia to give the incoming governor the necessary support that will enable him to succeed.

He prayed God to bless and guide the governor-elect and assured the people of Abia  that he would continue to discharge his duties as Governor until May 29 when he would handover to the new governor.

BREAKING! Labour Party’s Alex Otti emerges Abia governor-elect

The Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) has declared Alex Otti of the Labour Party, (LP) winner of the Abia state governorship election.

Otti emerged winner after defeating his closest rival, Okey Ahiwe of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) at the elections conducted on the 18th of March, 2023.

Otti scored 175,467, Ahiwe polled 88,529 while Nwafor of YPP got 28,972.

The Returning Officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state, Prof Nnenna Nnannaya-Oti declared Otti the winner on Wednesday evening at the resumption of the final collation of governorship election results in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

Recall that INEC suspended collation of results in the state but resumed 48 hours later to make the announcement.

The last time the LP produced a governor in the last 20 years was when Olusegun Mimiko was elected Ondo State governor from February 2009 to February 2017.

Before the announcement, Nnannaya-Oti said she will do the right of the people and protect democratic values.

“I shall stand squarely and unapologetically on these principles. The people’s votes and mandate shall stand.

“The pastor and the mother in me will not permit me to do anything that will adversely affect the future of our children,” said Nnannaya-Oti, who is the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri.

One fateful day, Juan Souza Carlos, a Brazilian billionaire, received a fax message at his Sao Paulo office. Not too many people of the generation X and Yknow much about fax messages. In the recent past, it was a veritable means of communication. The message was an unsolicited proposal from some Chief in Nigeria who for the purposes of this story, we shall refer to Chief Ike Aminu, to the effect that there was some big money lying in the Central Bank of Nigeria and looking for its rightful owner. On Chief Aminu’s investigation, it was found out that the owner of the money was dead, and the money was going to be forfeited as unclaimed if no body showed up to own it. The money was about $750m. An arrangement has been concluded by some Senior bank officials such that all Mr. Carlos needed to do was to visit Nigeria, meet with the officials, agree on sharing formula and bingo, the money would bewired, and everyone would have fun for the rest of their lives. Mr. Carlos agreed to come to Nigeria and was picked up by Chief Aminu and lodged in afive-starhotel. In the morning Chief Aminu and his partners picked him up and they went to Central Bank Head Office, then in Tinubu Square, Lagos. They were given a red-carpet reception and eventually were ushered into the expansive office of the “Governor”. The business was briskly concluded and Mr. Carlos was convinced it was a genuine prospect. It was not illogical to assume that the wily Mr. Carlos would have also planned to renege on the bastards once money hit his account in Brazil in a ‘dog-eat-dog’ style. All he needed to do was to provide his letter headed paper and fly back to Brazil and begin to wait for his wired funds. He returned to Brazil and waited. A few days later, he received a call from his new partners to inform him all was going well but that the bank was insisting on upfront payment of taxes and some fund for greasing some palms for the funds to be released. The withholding tax of 10% and the ‘PR’ of another 5% were what was standing between them and $750m. These amounted to over $112K which was insignificant compared to the main funds. They had been able to mobilise $10K and hoping that Mr. Carlos would come up with the balance. Not suspecting anything,Mr. Carlos wiredthe balance to Nigeria immediately . The Mugu, or Maga, had fallen! In the next few weeks, different stories would follow, pointing to how more money would be required in pursuit of the non-existent claim of the funds in the Central Bank.

Welcome to the world of the typical Advance Fee Fraud of the 80s and 90s. The name is derived from the demand of advance fees in pursuit of a larger amount of funds. The victim is in pursuit of a larger sum while the beneficiary is targeting a smaller amount which the victim would pay in advance. There are numerous forms of scam in practically all forms of endeavour. The victims are made all sorts of promises including love, marriage and money. At the end of it all, the target is to fleece the victim and defraud her of her money.

Inevitably, the advance fee fraud scheme of those days (known as 419, derived from the relevant section (419) of the Nigerian criminal code), could not endure as people quickly became wise to the scam. The internet quickly gave vent to another ‘419’ scam that has earned Nigeria a reputation across the globe. The Yahoo scam started sometime after Yahoo Mail came into existencein 1997.Their preference for the Yahoo Messenger made the cyber fraudsters to be known locallyas “Yahoo boys”. All they require to operate are laptops connected to the internet that runs almost on a 24-hour basis, Premium software exclusively for hacking purposes and a Virtual Private Network (VPN) application to mask their location.

Those involved in the illicit business have several ways of duping their victims and new ways are being developed daily. Beyond the already discussed forms, there are business email compromise, email phishing, identity theft/impersonationand outright hacking into accounts. Interestingly, some of thefraudsters often resort to seeking metaphysical powers from herbalists and native doctors that they believe will enable them to hypnotize or control their victims for the time they are on their radar. This latter category of scammers is called ‘Yahoo Plus boys or ‘G-boys.’

Yahoo boys are also known to be actively involved in ATM fraud. The debut of crypto currency is an added advantage to this trade as they are able to anonymously receive fraudulent proceeds. Holding foreign accounts to receive funds also help the profile of the fraudsters, though this only applies to the big Yahoo boys.

A more complex scheme is phishing, a technique used to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details. They stand at ATM galleries to feign assistance to vulnerable illiterate users, the old and the physically challenged and later swap cards to defraud them.Others are able to steal the PIN of unsuspecting users of the ATM and use the cards on the internet to shop or pay for goods.

To facilitate their trade, the scammers invest in informal networks, which revolve around banks, security agencies, co-fraudsters and sometimes, families. The common means of collecting fraudulent money in Nigeria is through the banks, mostly through the foreign money transfer companies like Western Union and MoneyGram. Through compromised bank staff, fraudsters use fake identity to access funds, particularly where the fraudster would have used a foreign name and would not have a recognized identity card in that name.

Internet fraud was mostly carried out at public cafés. However, with regular raids on these internet cafés and the arrest of suspected fraudsters by the police, the “yahoo boys” have simply moved their bases. The proliferation of internet service providers in Nigeria has also made it even easier for scammers to operate. It is now as simple as buying modems and surfing the internet within the confines of their apartments. The “yahoo boys” stay in physical communes of like-minded individuals and use this network to launch internet attacks.

In the area of romance, for instance, the scammers could to set up an account either on Facebook or Instagram using the stolen identity of a soldier stationed in Syria/Baghdad/Afghanistan/Iraq fighting rebels. Hisprofile is embellished with uploaded happy moments of the white military officer using a fake name. The ‘yahoo’scammer then sends direct messages to his targets, mostly women in their 50’s to 60’s, who are either divorced, widowed or lonely. Once they win their confidence, they swoop in all kinds of ways. To set up a close to reality transaction, the yahoo boy may arrange with a fake delivery company and send a fake package to the victim. The victim would be expected to pay for receiving the package including all handling charges. By the time she parts with funds, she would start the endless wait for a nonexistent package. The business of fleecing the lady continues until she finds out that she had fallen into the hands of fraudsters. Sometimes, the victims are too embarrassed to report the matter to law enforcement agents.

There is no doubt that many young Nigerians are involved in these crimes. Of all these, the hacking method is the mostsophisticated. Here, the email or system of a top executive is hacked into and his password, PIN and other details are stolen and used to operate his accounts from where funds are stolen without his knowledge. Hacking into bank accounts has also become popular as a result of this scheme. Account holders who compromise their identities are at risk here. The fraudster is able to steal funds from their victim’s accounts from either an ATM, transfer to another account or by shopping.

It should be noted that most of these crimes are perpetrated by young Nigerians. The country has rightly or wrongly earned a reputation as the fraud capital of the world. In fact, there is a story of a victim who said that when he thought about the ingenuity and hard work deployed by the people who defrauded him, he concluded that they really worked hardfor the money and should keep it. So, if our young ones are so talented, even in doing fraud why wouldn’t they deploy their skills to positive ventures?

There is no doubt that the level of unemployment and poverty in the land is one of the major reasons why we have so much of our youth involved in this despicable business. With close to 50% of our population living in abject poverty, and a youth unemployment figure of similar proportion, it is counterintuitive that this line of business would become attractive to these highly skilled and enlightened but idle individuals.Furthermore, a value system that glorifies thepenchant for fast and easy money has not helped matters. Before now, most cultures in Nigeria would frown at ill-gotten wealth and not associate with someone who they were not sure of the source of his wealth. Today, the case is different as the successful scammers are honoured with Chieftaincy titles and Doctorate degrees, while Musicians sing their praises and families worship them.

There have been many cases of fraudsters that have been caught in the recent times.Oneof them is currently serving a ten-year prison sentence in the United States for internet fraud that caused $11M losses to his victims. He was a rising star within the country’s private sector to the extent that he once graced the front page of an elite magazine,as an under 30 young millionaire.

Another celebrated case was a Dubai resident who flaunted his extravagant lifestyle on social media. He arrived in the United States to face criminal charges where he was alleged to have conspired to launder hundreds of millions of dollars from business email compromise (BEC) frauds and other scams, including schemes targeting a U.S. law firm, a foreign bank and an English Premier League soccer club. He and others further allegedly conspired to launder hundreds of millions of dollars from other fraudulent schemes and computer intrusions, including one scheme to steal £100 million from an English Premier League soccer club. In the process of the investigation, a top-rankinglocal police officerwas implicated.

All these go to show that whitewashing proceeds of crime and pretending to be genuine can help but not for too long. On the other hand, flaunting it will show the fraudster the way to jail, very quickly. For some time now, hardly does a week pass without the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) parading young men for cyber fraud or some being jailed by courts for internet fraud-related offences. The foregoing indicate that we have a major challenge facing us as a society. Nigeria now has the unenviable reputation of being a major cyber-corruption hub. Just a week ago, 60 suspected internet fraudsters were arrested by EFCC at a ‘yahoo boys’ awards night in Abeokuta, Ogun state Capital. The event was christened “Peer Youth Awards” and was organised to reward high level internet fraudsters.

These developments have long term adverse consequences for Nigeria and Nigerians, wherever they may be domiciled. The shameful acts of these few members of our society have completelyfouled the pleasant fragrance of numerous hardworking and successful Nigerians, who are quietly doing their honest and noble businesses.

At the end of the day, we do not benefit from whatever miserly returns that come from these criminal endeavours. They need to be snuffed out quickly or we all will continue to pay for the thoughtless acts of a few of us. This is the kernel of our discussion today. We have so many in our society who have become indifferent towards the penchant for our society to look away from, or even venerate, wealth acquired from questionable and criminal sources. It is a time bomb that needs to be diffused by ensuring that we avoid such characters and the proceeds of their illegal pursuits. Eventually, we will, in one way or the other, pay the price for our disregard of their actions. It is a war that must be fought in families, communities, schools, religious organisations and elsewhere. It is a war that we must win.
