Badminton: Nigeria clinches 6 medals in Algeria

Team Nigeria won six medals on Thursday, concluding its badminton campaign at the maiden African School Games in Algeria with two gold, three silver and one bronze.

Nigeria’s first gold came from Precious Adekunle, who showed speed, skill, and tactical sharpness to beat her Egyptian rival in the girls’ singles final.

Edun Damilare secured the second gold in boys’ singles after a gritty and determined display that saw him overcome a tough opponent in a tense final.

The Adekunle sisters, Precious and Cynthia, gave a strong performance in the girls’ doubles final but had to settle for silver after a close contest.

In the mixed doubles final, Edun David teamed up with Cynthia Adekunle to win another silver medal for Team Nigeria after an impressive outing.

In the mixed team event, Ahmed Ayatulla and Masibau Faisat faced Tunisia in a closely fought semifinal match.

Ayatulla won the boys’ match 3-1, but Tunisia claimed the girls’ match 3-0 against Nigeria’s Faisat.

Tunisia also edged the doubles 3-1, making the overall score 2-1 and leaving Nigeria with the bronze medal.

Team Nigeria has eight medals from four sports, including two gold, four silver and two bronze.

Flamingos play goalless draw with Algeria to qualify for World Cup

Nigeria’s Under-17 female football team, Flamingos, on Friday played a goalless draw with Algeria to qualify for the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The 2022 bronze medalist, who were determined to win their last match of the qualifying series, absorbed the pressure of the Algerian girls in the return leg played at Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida.

NAN reports that the Flamingos battled for supremacy to be one of the countries to represent the continent in the World Cup in October

In spite of the wintry conditions in Blida on the outskirts of the Algerian capital, Algiers, the Nigerian girls dug their feet into the ground and achieved a scoreless draw that qualified them for this year’s Women’s World Cup finals.

Holding on to a 4-0 first-leg advantage, the 2002 bronze medalists adopted a calm and collected pattern that easily soaked up the pressure from the hosts.

They then relied on fast breaks to try and pull the trigger on their opponents

Although they created better chances, the Flamingos failed to take advantage of their dominance in possession.

They, however, collected the ticket to Morocco on a 4-0 aggregate win.

The difference over two legs of the final round was a remarkable display in the opening leg by the Flamingos.

The Flamingos will now be one of Africa’s five representatives (including hosts Morocco) at this year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup finals taking place from Oct.17 to Nov 5.

The final competition will feature 24 teams for the very first time.

Since the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup competition was launched in New Zealand in 2008, Nigeria failed to make the finals only once.

This was at the 2018 tournament hosted by Uruguay.

  • Algeria’s Tebboune wins re-election; Secures 95% vote

    Algeria’s Tebboune wins re-election; Secures 95% vote

Algeria’s incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been re-elected with almost 95 per cent of the vote, the country’s electoral authority ANIE said Sunday.

“Out of 5,630,000 voters recorded, 5,320,000 voted for the independent candidate Abdelmadjid Tebboune, accounting for 94.65 percent of the vote,” ANIE head Mohamed Charfi told reporters in the capital Algiers.

Tebboune, 78, was heavily favoured to secure a second term in the race against moderate Islamist Abdelaali Hassani, 57, and socialist candidate Youcef Aouchiche, 41.

“The election was marked by broad transparency” and “reflected the electoral maturity of the people”, said Charfi.

But he did not provide the official turnout rate, which was seen as Tebboune’s major challenge in a vote where his victory was all but certain.

The re-elected president had hoped for a higher turnout than in 2019, the year he was elected amid widely boycotted elections and the Hirak mass pro-democracy protests.

Tebboune was elected at the time amid a record abstention rate of over 60 percent.

In the early hours of Sunday, ANIE had announced an “average turnout” rate of 48 percent, calling it “provisional”, but it did not give a breakdown of the number of voters against those initially registered.

The announcement came three hours behind schedule after the authority said on Saturday evening that it was extending voting by one hour, expecting more voters to show up.

ANIE had also announced an “average” participation of 26 percent by 5:00 pm (1600 GMT) — which would have compared to 33 percent by that time of day in the 2019 elections.

Hassani’s campaign on Sunday said in a statement that ANIE’s provisional turnout was “strange” and denounced attempts to “inflate the results”.

Hassani heads the moderate Islamist party the Movement of Society for Peace and Aouchiche the centre-left Socialist Forces Front.

AFCON 2023: Algeria held to second draw by Burkina Faso

Baghdad Bounedjah scored twice to keep Algeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations hopes alive as they drew against Burkino Faso in Group D.

Mohamed Konate’s powerful header had put the Stallions ahead before Bounedjah equalised in the 51st minute, scoring from close range.

Bertrand Traore’s penalty put Burkino Faso back in front 20 minutes later.

But Bounedjah rose highest to head in Algeria’s second equaliser in added time to pick up a point.

The Stallions had the better chances with Steeve Yago backheeling into the path of Blati Toure, whose shot flew just over the bar.

Rayan Ait-Nouri gave away the penalty after fouling Issa Kabore in the box and Traore stepped up to convert his second goal in as many games.

Bounedjah made up for shooting wide of the post in the first half by scoring twice in the second period. He reacted quickest in the box when Nabil Bentaleb’s effort was saved and then rose highest to gain a vital point for The Greens.

Group D is now finely poised, with Burkina Faso top on four points.

Algeria are second with two points from two games, while Angola would go joint top if they beat Mauritania.

  • Deadly Mediterranean wildfires claim over 40 lives

Deadly Mediterranean wildfires claim over 40 lives

Over 40 lives have been lost in a tragic wildfire outbreak that has swept through Algeria, Italy, and Greece, leaving villages and holiday resorts at risk, prompting the evacuation of thousands.

On Tuesday, a firefighting plane fighting the flames in Greece crashed, resulting in the deaths of two pilots.

The aircraft, which had been tirelessly dropping water to quell the inferno, tragically came down on a hillside near the town of Karystos on the Greek island of Evia, east of Athens.

The brave captain, aged 34, and the co-pilot, aged 27, both lost their lives in the accident, the country’s air force confirmed.

Greece is bracing for further evacuation flights as fires continue to ravage the islands of Corfu and Evia, with the Civil Protection Ministry warning of “extreme danger” of fire in six of the country’s 13 regions on Wednesday.

Over 20,000 people have been evacuated from their homes and resorts in the southern region of the holiday hotspot, Rhodes.

To facilitate the evacuations, close to 3,000 holidaymakers have already been flown back to their home countries, according to figures from the Transport Ministry.

The wildfires have dealt a significant blow to Greece’s tourism industry, a crucial pillar of the nation’s economy, and in response to the crisis, tour operators have taken the difficult decision to cancel upcoming trips to the affected areas.

Tourism contributes 18 per cent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and supports one in five jobs.

For islands like Rhodes, the reliance on tourism is even more substantial, making the impact of these wildfires all the more devastating.

Algeria has suffered the highest death toll so far, with 34 victims, including 10 soldiers who found themselves surrounded by flames during an evacuation in the coastal province of Bejaia, east of Algiers.

While Algerian authorities have managed to extinguish 80 per cent of the fire since Sunday, an extensive firefighting operation is ongoing, engaging around 8,000 personnel, hundreds of fire trucks, and several aircraft.

The relentless heatwave shows no signs of abating, with temperatures expected to surge beyond 44°C (111°F) in certain parts of Greece.

Sicily and Puglia in Italy have also been affected, forcing thousands to flee in the face of the advancing flames.

The combination of high winds and parched vegetation has made firefighting efforts arduous, leaving firefighters struggling to contain the inferno and create effective firebreaks.

Fires have also raged in neighbouring Tunisia, where 300 people had to be evacuated from the coastal village of Melloula.

Ennahar TV quoted Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune as saying. It added that Tebboune said at the end of his visit to China that Algeria had sought to join the BRICS to open new economic opportunities.

The North Africa country is rich in oil and gas resources and seeking to diversify its economy and strengthen its partnership with countries such as China.

The BRICS group of nations comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. It account for more than 40 percent of the world’s population and about 26 percent of the global economy.

“We officially applied to join the BRICS group, we sent a letter asking to be shareholder members in the bank … Algeria’s first contribution in the bank will be $1.5 billion,” Ennahar quoted Tebboune as saying.

More than 40 countries have expressed interested in joining the BRICS group of nations, South Africa’s top diplomat in charge of relations with the bloc said this week.

Argentina, Iran, the UAE, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Comoros, Gabon, and Kazakhstan are among countries that expressed interest.

China will invest $36 billion in Algeria across sectors including manufacturing, new technology, the knowledge economy, transport, and agriculture, local media quoted Tebboune as saying this week.

  • Senegal defeat host Algeria on penalties to become CHAN champions

Senegal defeat host Algeria on penalties to become CHAN champions

Algeria’s hopes of winning the African Nations Championship (CHAN) on home soil were crushed in heartbreaking fashion as they lost 5-4 on penalties to Senegal in the final on Saturday.

The Local Teranga Lions edged hosts in a very tense final at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers in front of 39,120 spectators on a cold winter night.

Pape Thiaw’s outfit will look back and be proud of their performance on the night that saw them complete the treble for the West African nation in a year that has seen them lift the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as well as the Beach Soccer AFCON.

Both sides seemed tense in the opening minutes of the final that would see a new champion for the continental tournament that is organised for players that feature in their domestic leagues.

The tension escalated as Gabonese referee Pierre Ghislain Atcho dished out four yellow cards in the opening half hour but they both settled in well thereafter and sought to have an edge over their opponents.

Goalless at the half-time mark, both coaches Madjid Bougherra and Pape Thiaw made some changes in the second half and increased their intensity while maintaining a balanced outlook on the night.

Four minutes into the second half, Senegal defender Cheikh Sidibe tried to clear the ball away from Mokhtar Belkhither, but it bounced off him before he commenced a spirited run into the box.

But despite his timely pass to Aimen Mahious, the forward’s effort was off target as well as his resultant attempt from a corner kick.

Senegal came close to an opener in the 56th minute but Diallo’s long-range strike from outside the box went over the bar, much to the frustration of the Senegal bench who were on the edge of their seats.

Mahious made a good run into the box from the middle to pass to Zakaria Draoui and then Belkhither in the box whose shot was blocked by Ousmane Diouf as the Senegalese maintained their shape.

With the game ending goalless after regular time, extratime called for extra focus as both sides continued pressing up front but neither was successful.

In the 99th minute, Mahious played a clean through ball for Abderrahmane Ben Tahar on the left wing with the latter sending a timely high ball for Zinnedine Belaid in the box.

But his header after rising above the Senegalese defence was picked up easily by Pape Mamadou Sy who was well-positioned.

In the 105th minute, Mrezigue had his shot on target saved by the alert Sy who denied him from finding the back of the net. The game eventually went into penalties after both sides failed to score.

Elhadji Mooutarou Balde of Teungueth stepped up first for Senegal and sent his attempt into the lower corner past Alexis Guendouz who guessed right but the power on the ball was too much for him.

Akram Djahnit hesitated before making his attempt and Sy was quick to save it through the middle to find the back of the net, but Sy was off his line.

Djahnit made no mistake with his second attempt, sending it into the left corner to make it 1-1 for the hosts.

Senegal’s Moussa Ndiaye was on point through the middle past Guendouz to give the Teranga Lions a 2-1 lead before Draoui equalized with a nicely taken low shot into the right corner sending Sy the wrong way.

Moussa Kante made way to the penalty spot and as he prepared his attempt, Guendouz psyched himself up in the box.

But despite going the right way, Kante’s powerful shot was too high for him to save. Senegal took a 3-2 lead.

Soufiane Bayazid equalized for Algeria 3-3 with a powerful shot and his animated celebration was enough to show what this meant for him and his tense teammates in the center of the field.

Cheikhou Omar Ndiaye hit the crossbar to send Guendouz into celebration as he made way for Sy who went the wrong way as Youcef Laouafi sent his shot into the right corner to give Algeria a 4-3 lead.

Senegal’s poster boy Lamine Camara was calm on the assignment as his shot in the left corner sent Guendouz the wrong way to make it 4-4.

Mahious, who had scored five of Algeria’s nine goals at the tournament, stepped up with confidence and tried the Panenka but his attempt through the middle was picked up easily by Sy.

The Teranga Lions held their breaths as Ousmane Diouf found the back of the net via a sneaky shot past Guendouz who had dived into the right direction to make it 5-4 for Senegal.

The pressure was now on Algeria.

Ahmed Kendouci visibly felt it and when he missed his chance to equalize, it was tears for the home side while Senegal ran into the pitch in animated celebration of the country’s first ever CHAN title.

Meanwhile, Algeria set a new tournament record by not conceding in six games at the tournament in regular time. The final was the first game to go into extra time.
