Tender your resignation letter – Atiku tells INEC boss, Yakubu

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP)  has called on the chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, to resign his appointment from his position.

INEC declared Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, (APC) as the winner of the February 25 election with 8,794,726 votes.

Tinubu beat Atiku who polled 6,984,520 votes and the Labour Party, LP, candidate Peter Obi who secured 6,101,533 votes.

However, the INEC boss admitted that there were some irregularities in the process of result collation at the presidential elections.

Yakubu, during a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) yesterday, noted that a number of issues affected the outcome of the polls.

He vowed that officials responsible for the infractions wouldn’t be involved in the gubernatorial poll on March 11 and would face disciplinary actions.

However, Atiku in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, on Sunday said: “Prof. Yakubu should be man enough to own up to his failure.

“A fish rots from the head down, and that is what has happened at INEC.

“Rather than suspend any staff, the INEC chairman is the one that needs to step aside as his first act of contrition.”

Politics almost cost me my life – Atiku

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) presidential candidate has relayed his political experience.

The Adamawa born politician said that his aspiration to become the president of the country almost cost him his life.

The former vice president who spoke during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday said his move to enthrone and deepen democracy in Nigeria started even during the military era.

The PDP candidate claimed that he has been battling for the nation’s top job for the past three decades.

    Excerpts of the Speech

BEING DRAFT OF A PRESS CONFERENCE READ BY THE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE OF THE PDP, ATIKU ABUBAKAR AT THE YAR’ADUA CENTER ON THURSDAY, 2 MARCH, 2023 ON THE CONDUCT OF 2023 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

Fellow Nigerians, it is with a heart full of sadness that I address you today.
I have in the last three decades devoted my life to the battle to birth and deepen democracy in our country.
It was a battle that started during the military era. It was a struggle that nearly caused me my life and that of my son, Adamu, in Kaduna. I survived the assassination only by the mercies and grace of God.
Following that attack, I was forced into exile. But that attack claimed the precious lives of some police officers. That was not all: my businesses were nearly crippled and my signature business was eventually appropriated by the maximum ruler of that era. My commitment to enthroning democracy ensured that I joined forces with other compatriots. As a leader of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP), we fought and won the 1993 presidential election, which was acclaimed as the fairest and freest election in our history. Sadly, Chief MKO Abiola, who embodied that hope for the birth of a new Nigeria, paid the ultimate price
Our fight to enthrone democracy continued. Indeed, the motivating factor for the birth of the Peoples Democratic Party was to force the exit of the military from government and their permanent return to the military barracks.
Following the exit of the military and the advent of democratic rule in 1999, I did not rest on my oars. I deployed the same level of commitment to advance and deepen our democracy. I did this because our democracy was bought at a huge price of human lives. My mentor and true Nigerian hero, who this venue in which we are gathered this evening is named for, was one of those who paid the ultimate price in that battle. So, also was Chief Alfred Rewane, Chief MKO Abiola and his dear wife, Chief (Mrs) Kudirat Abiola.
It was also for this reason that I sacrificed my political aspiration and fought against the actualisation of Third Term. Whether during the military or civilian era, I have, no matter how inconvenient, pitched my tent with the people against dictators. During the military regime, it nearly cost me my life and the near decimation of my businesses. In the civilian administration, it had serious adverse implications on my political life. But I have remained undaunted because I was, and still convinced, that the only reason why I am in politics is to work in tandem with other compatriots in the advancement of the wellbeing of the people.
The 2023 presidential election presented our nation and its people the greatest opportunity for a reset. We had everything going for us: a legal framework in the 2022 Electoral Act and the BVAS technology. The enthusiasm of Nigerians to turn out and in large numbers was an added bonus.
However, the dreams and aspirations of Nigerians who braced all the challenges to go and cast their votes on Saturday, 25th of February, 2023, were shattered by the conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which failed to live up to expectations. The weekend election was neither free nor fair. Preliminary assessments indicate that it is the worst conducted elections since the return to democratic rule. The manipulation and fraud that attended this election was unprecedented in the history of our nation. I can still not understand why the electoral umpire was in such a hurry to conclude collation and announcement of the result, given the number of complaints of irregularities of bypassing of the BVAS, failure of uploading to the IREV, and unprecedented cancellations and disenfranchisement of millions of voters in breach of the Electoral Act and the commission’s own guidelines. It was indeed a rape of democracy.
Having consulted with leaders of our party and Nigerians from different walks of life, I have come to the conclusion that the processes and outcome of the Presidential and National Assembly election of last Saturday was grossly flawed in every material particular, and as such must be challenged. This has been attested to by both local and international observers. I want to believe that this was not the legacy that President Muhammadu Buhari had promised. For President Buhari, it is not too late to make amends for the good of our country and the future generations and indeed to assure his legacy.
This battle to right the wrongs of Saturday is not about me. It is a continuation of my battles to deepen democracy and for a better life for our people. It is about the future of Nigerian youths.
I know that Nigerians, especially the youth, are traumatized by the developments, but I want to urge them to conduct themselves peacefully. Like I have done over the years, I assure you that I will commit the rest of my life in ensuring that true democracy, which affirms the supremacy of your votes and your will, will take firm footing and guarantee a stable, prosperous and peaceful Nigeria. This is more so as Nigeria represents the hope of Africa and the Black World.
It is my hope that the judiciary will redeem itself this time around and rise to the society’s expectation as the last HOPE. In the end, who wins is not as important as the credibility of our elections and electoral processes.
I call on all men and women of goodwill to join hands with us in the vanguard to defend our constitution from the brigandage of anti democratic forces. Finally I urge Nigerians to remain vigilant and resolute. You have the constitutionally guaranteed right of freedom to choose your leaders. We will not sit idly by and watch your rights taken from you.
    Your voices will be heard.
May God bless you, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

New Notes: Atiku backs CBN over cashless policy, says moves is economically viable

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) Atiku Abubakar has accused those clamouring for the extension of deadline for the new notes of having an ulterior motive.

The Adamawa- born politician made this statement signed and released by him in Abuja on Wednesday, saying that the move by the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN has good intentions towards establishing a cashless economy.

Recall that the apex bank had on Sunday extended the collection of old Naira notes in banks by 10 days to ensure that all users especially the rural dwellers are able to deposit their old N200, N500 and N1000 notes.

Some political stakeholders have, however, demanded that the collection be extended by months.

But Atiku, in the statement alleged that those demanding for further extension may have ulterior motives.

While hailing the CBN on the cashless policy, Atiku urged the apex bank to make the new notes available before the new deadline elapses.

He said, “The CBN should be wary of the elite whose motive for crying out about a further postponement of the deadline for the tenure of the old naira notes is sinister and far from being altruistic. I am totally in support of building a cashless economy and reducing the amount of cash in our economy.

“The cashless policy and reduction of the cash in circulation has many advantages, and every patriotic Nigerian should support the CBN on this. It will help to reduce the flow of illicit funds in our economy.

“It will help to defeat the funding of terrorism and deter the circulation of drug money in our economy. It will help our fight against corruption.”

The Federal Government has reiterated that there is no going back on the extension of the deadline beyond February 10, saying its a means to tackle banditry, thuggery during elections and what a view.

2023 Elections: Peter Obi will carry the day – Babachir Lawal

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal has predicted a Labour Party win in the forthcoming general elections in the country, saying there may be a second ballot.

Lawal made this known while featuring on a political programme politics today on Channels Television, Lagos state.

He noted that the Peoples Democratic Party will give the Labour party a good competition while noting that the All Progressive Congress could finish in third place depending on the strength of Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria peoples Party (NNPP).

The Adamawa born politician added that APCs flying of Muslim-Muslim ticket will be their greatest undoing, adding that the many christians in the North will either vote for Atiku of Peter Obi of Labour Party.

” Tinubu will not get 25% in Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Yobe, Adamawa and in all the Hausa-Fulani states he goes nowhere

”He might get some votes in the Southwest because of tribal affinity, South South is also not his territory, likewise Southeast

”Atiku will clear most of the northern states because he’s from there and has been contesting for many years”

However, he added that the APC will get 25% votes in some northern states, saying it will not be enough to scale through.

Lawal noted that the election will be very tight between PDP and LP and could lead to a second ballot but insisted Obi will still carry the day.

The Independent Electoral Commission INEC has fixed February 25 for the forthcoming presidential elections in the country, while the gubernatorial and state Assembly elections will be held on 12th March, 2023.

2023 Elections: Keyamo speaks on quitting his role at APC

Senior Lawyer and spokesperson of the Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council, Festus Keyamo has spoken on the only reason he could pull out of his role in the campaign of the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

The Legal Practitioner added that he would be quitting his role in APC if Tinubu asked him to withdraw his court case against Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Keyamo said Atiku should be arrested and prosecuted for alleged breach of the Code of Conduct Act, Money Laundering, Criminal Breach of Trust, and Conspiracy.

Keyamo made his position known on a political programme on Channels Television on Tuesday.

Keyamo was reacting to a viral video by a whistleblower, Michael Achimugu, who indicted Atiku.

Achimugu claimed that the former Vice President used Special Purpose Vehicles to usurp funds while in office between 1999 and 2007.

Keyamo said: “In the case when they challenged my principal (Bola Tinubu), when they brought up dead documents from the US, I said go to court. Come out with your full chest and go to court. Up until today, they ran away.

“I’m proceeding to court. And if Asiwaju says, ‘Festus, you’re diverting from my campaign, just campaign for me.’ I will say take your campaign because this is in national interest. I have taken it personal.”

  • Ortom, Wike shuns Atiku at Makurdi Airport

Ortom, Wike shuns Atiku at Makurdi Airport

Governor Samuel Ortom and Nyesom Wike have shunned the Peoples Democratic Party’s Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, at the Makurdi Airport in Benue State, hinting the fact that the crisis between Atiku and the five aggrieved PDP governors may be far from over.

According to reports, Abubakar whose presidential campaign is billed to hold in Nasarawa State on Monday decided to fly to Benue because he could not secure a landing clearance in Nasarawa.

About 20 minutes before his arrival, Governor Ortom arrived at the Airport and many thought he was there to receive the PDP presidential candidate.

However, about five minutes later, the PDP vice presidential candidate, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, landed at the Airport, and he exchanged pleasantries with Governor Ortom.

The latter was heard asking “So, you people will come to my state without telling me?”

Moments later, a jet landed and Governor Ortom swiftly moved towards it to receive the person on aboard, it turned out to be Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State.

The governors hugged and exchanged pleasantries and without wasting time, the two men entered their vehicle and zoomed off.

Twenty minutes later, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar arrived at the Makurdi Airport alongside members of the Presidential Campaign Council and the PDP national chairman.

He was only received by Governor Okowa and other party members; the absence of Ortom and Wike is a strong indication that the rift remains far from over.

Nigerian Standard reports that the incident comes a day after Atiku Abubakar said he has met with Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State to resolve the lingering crisis within the party without any way forward.

Speaking on Sunday during the People’s Townhall, Atiku said “I have met Wike two times in Port Harcourt, two times in Abuja, one time in London, personally.”

“It is not on my part; it is on the other side; I am waiting for him,” he said, without revealing the kernel of his discussions with the Rivers governor.

Atiku was on the programme alongside his running mate, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

Wike’s 2023 presidential ambition was terminated when he lost the PDP’s primary to Atiku in May. Atiku, a former Vice President later stung Wike when he passed over his closest rival at the primary and chose Okowa as his running mate.

The Rivers State governor has since been at loggerheads with PDP presidential candidate (Atiku) over the chairmanship of Iyorchia Ayu. Wike with four other PDP governors known as the G5 or the Integrity Group have insisted that Benue-born Ayu must step down for a southerner as a precondition to support the 2023 ambition of Atiku.

Last month, Wike promised logistics support for the campaigns of the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi; and his New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) counterpart, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

While Wike and his allies have not been seen to campaign for Atiku, it is not clear whether they will support Obi, Kwankwaso, or APC’s Bola Tinubu in the contest for Aso Rock’s top job.

  • I will increase funds for arts, liberalise acquisition process – Atiku

I will increase funds for arts, liberalise acquisition process – Atiku

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, PDP Presidential candidate, on Saturday promised to increase funds for the arts and liberalise the process of its acquisition once elected in the forthcoming elections.

Abubakar made the promise during a special roundtable discussion with Nigeria’s creative cultural and innovative industry stakeholders in Lagos.

The meeting was aimed at strengthening the country’s booming entertainment space and cultivating a more unifying support in championing Nigeria’s creative expression.

The presidential candidate acknowledged that the creative industry was a vital industry capable of immense wealth creation and generating huge employment opportunities.

He said such an industry should not be toyed with as it had been identified as second most important sector after agriculture.

“I commend the presentations so far, I understand your challenges which I am also facing because I own a television and radio station, I face the same problem of access to water and electricity as well as bad roads, so I want you to regard me as one of you.

“The way forward is to increase funds for the arts and liberalise the process of acquiring that fund, if you give me the opportunity, I will do it because it is essential.

“I reject direct CBN intervention and encourage the private sector to be part of this, government cannot develop all the fund needed.

“I look forward to a close collaboration with you on how we can develop the sector and exploit the potential, it is a multi-billion income creating sector.

“If we work together, we can make it, I look forward to another meeting before the elections to agree on some modalities on how things will be done,” he said

Abubakar commended the patriotic zeal of the private practitioners in the creative sector in the face of numerous obstacles trying to hinder their progress.

Also, Ifeanyi Okowa, PDP Vice Presidential Candidate, said all requests made by the practitioners in the creative sector would be properly articulated just as promised by Abubakar.

Okowa disclosed that the newly built Film Village in Asaba would be launched by December.
He said there were plans to ensure that practitioners in the creative industry ran it, as government would not be in the best position to do that.

He urged Nigerians to turn out en mass to vote during the forthcoming elections in February.
“There would be a new Nigeria if we work together to defend our land and take pride in it.

“We can make Nigeria work again through collaboration with the aim to rebuild the foundation,” he said.
Earlier, Efe Omorogbe, a Talent Manager and Music Executive, said the major challenge confronting the music industry were piracy and Nigerians’ unwillingness to pay music royalties.

He said less than 10 per cent of music consumers paid royalties which was not encouraging.
Omorogbe noted that it was high time politics and governance were balanced while the right people were engaged in the leadership positions in the creative space.

According to him, Nigerian music industry remains so huge, yet to be properly tapped.

Ayo Animashaun, Executive Producer of Hip TV, noted that the enabling environment for the creative industry must be created for businesses to thrive.

“We do not have the enabling environment to perform at the best capacity; this makes it so difficult to carry out major projects,” he said.

Kenneth Gyang, a filmmaker, said that if the industry must function optimally, the incoming President needed to create a national endowment fund for practitioners in the creative space just as practised in other climes.

Gyang noted that Nigerian filmmakers were supposed to be given the opportunity by the government to engage in co-productions and sign treaties with other countries.

“If fund is created for filmmakers, it will enable us to tell our stories as a country in the most dignifying way,” he said.

Chioma Ude, Founder, Africa International Film Festival, said there was need to have more film festivals to showcase Nigerian and African creative content.

She said training and capacity building should be priotised and upscaled.

“We should have exhibition platforms beyond the likes of Netflix and Amazon, we should have more film festivals to also woo tourists,” she said.

According to Agatha Amata, the entertainment industry is still a goldmine waiting to be tapped, we need to go digital, a lot of resources go into digital development since 2015 but it is unfortunate, we are still where we are.

Also, Francis Onoche, a filmmaker, said that serious attention should be drawn to the cultural policy of Nigerian films, which he described as amazing.

Onoche said that endowment funds for the arts should be revisited and provided.

He commended the efforts of former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, for the support on training, distribution, production and capacity building for filmmakers.

“We need you to support the true emergence of the creative sector in Nigeria,” he said.

2023 Elections: PDP pulls out of presidential town hall meeting

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State have pulled out of a town hall meeting organized for all contestants ahead of the 2023 presidential elections.

The Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) revealed this via a tweet on their verified Twitter page.

“Due to unavoidable conflicts, Alh. Atiku Abubakar and his running mate, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa of the People’s Democratic Party, will not be participating in The Candidates Presidential Town Hall Series,” the tweet read.

The presidential town hall series tagged ‘The Candidates,’ is organized by Daria Media in partnership with News Central, and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), among others.

Recall that, Okowa had represented Atiku in one of the Presidential Town Hall meetings organized by Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) and chaired by Reuben Abati of Arise Television.

Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Rabiu Kwakwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) were in attendance.

PDP Crisis: Wike, other aggrieved governors set to reconcile with Atiku

The Rivers state governor and other aggrieved members of the  Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), have decided to embrace a peace window  with the party’s presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

It was gathered that Wike and other aggrieved governors have welcomed another round of meetings in order to reconcile all members of the party.

The aggrieved parties known as the G-5 governors are Samuel Ortom (Benue), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) with Wike playing the lead character.

The Media Adviser to the PDP presidential candidate, Paul Ibe disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja.

Part of his statement reads, “The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar welcomes reports that the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike and his group are favourably disposed to the resolution of the issues with the PDP candidate.

“Atiku Abubakar also expresses his commitment to a negotiation that will resolve the crisis of confidence and pave the way for a much stronger and united PDP.

“He enjoins every leader of the party and their supporters irrespective of their leanings to be open-minded and support the process of resolution of the extant issues”.

Recall that the outcome of the party’s presidential primaries and subsequent selection of the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa as Atiku’s running mate for the 2023 general polls pitted Wike and four other governors of the party against Atiku.

The G-5 governors have constantly asked for the resignation of the party’s National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, citing intra-party zoning arrangement within the PDP.

Recently, a video surfaced online where Benue state  Governor, Samuel Ortom berated the Party’s presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, saying that his kinsmen have suffered in the hands of Fulani people and wouldn’t like to associate with another Fulani man.
