10th NASS: Why I deserve to be next Speaker – Doguwa

Rep. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa (APC-Kano) says he deserves to be the Speaker of the 10th House of the Representatives, because he has paid his dues and deserves to be rewarded.

Doguwa said this when he unveiled his plans for the Speaker on Wednesday in Abuja.

“I have paid my dues; it is time to reward my stewardship to both the parliament and the nation.

“I stand out as the oldest serving member from the Northwest in the House and with the support of my colleagues, I am the leader of the Northwest and the leader of the APC caucus in the house,” he said.

He promised to be the Speaker that would see through the implementation of the “Renewed Hope 2023-Action Plan for a Better Nigeria”, anchored by Sen. Bola Tinubu.

The lawmaker said he would leave no stone unturned to galvanise the support of the House to ensure the actualisation of the laudable programmes and policies of the incoming Tinubu administration.

Speaking on his mission, he said he would strengthen the role of parliaments toward effective representation while restoring the public confidence in governance.

He said he would do this by way of facilitating, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating strategies for public involvement in governance and government business.

Doguwa said he would ensure that the House conducted its business in a transparent and accountable manner, where every member would be held responsible and accountable by the people he represented.

“If elected Speaker, we will ensure cohesion and harmonious working relationships amongst the three arms of government.

“I am uniquely positioned to unite and stabilise the House, while creating an avenue for all actors to play vital and critical roles to stabilize the polity.

”I am determined to work according to the principle of checks and balances amongst all sectors, to ensure that the House conducts its business for the people and by the people’s representatives,” he said.

He was arrested by the police in Kano over the death of three persons in his constituency in the February 25 presidential election.

Following the emergence of the viral video, the acting Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, said the clip was taken during the 3 Brigade Nigerian Army Training Exercise where he was invited as a special guest.

“The Defence Headquarters wishes to state that the video is a calculated attempt by mischief-makers to discredit the Armed Forces of Nigeria and dent its image before the good people of this country and the world at large,” he said in a statement on Friday.

“The video in question was taken at Falgore Forest Military Training Camp during the 3 Brigade Nigerian Army Training Exercise where Hon Alhassan Ado Doguwa was invited as a special guest.

The viral video was posted with the intent to dent the image of the military at a time the role of the armed forces in the last presidential and National Assembly elections was hailed by Nigerians and the international community

“It is worthy to state that when senior citizens and Special Guests are invited for such exercises, they are accorded the honour to participate in the firing exercise as a ceremonial firing party.

“Ceremonial firing in such an exercise is the practice the world over and is not new in the armed forces as several other senior citizens have participated in such exercises in the past.”

According to Gusau, the viral video was posted with the intent to dent the image of the military at a time the role of the armed forces in the last presidential and National Assembly elections was hailed by Nigerians and the international community.

He stated that some clerics had equally released audio clips containing wrong interpretations of the speech the Majority Leader made at the occasion, saying the “doctored interpretation of the speech is capable of instigating crisis, thus leading to heightened tension as the country prepares for a smooth transition to another elected government.”

The defence spokesman stated that the military will continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities while also remaining apolitical to strengthen the democratic values of our great nation.

He equally warned mischief-makers against denting the image of the armed forces with senseless videos and unconfirmed audio clips but rather channel their energy towards ensuring Nigeria strives higher in the preservation of democratic gains.

New Naira notes not enough to go round – Bank operators

Operators of Commercial Banks in the country have countered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over claims that the commercial banks have enough naira notes in their kitty but hoarding them.

The banks countered the CBN when their officials appeared before the House of Representatives ad hoc committee investigating the scarcity of the new notes and the January 31 deadline by the apex bank.

Mrs Hadiza Ambursa, an official of Access Bank, who represented the Managing Director of the bank said it only got 10 per cent of the money it deposited with the CBN.

According to her, “we are not getting the money as quickly as we want them. We only get 10 per cent of the money deposited. We are paying and collecting money. We are also loading our ATM.

Mr Jimoh Garuba, the representative of Sterling Bank, said it receives allocation weekly from CBN but had no sufficient fund to meet its customers’ demand.

He said, “as we speak, our Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is dispensing what we received which fluctuates most time.”

He said his bank received a minimum of N150 million from the CBN weekly to be shared among its branches in Abuja.

He further said in Kaduna, the bank received N150 million weekly which is shared among its branches across the 36 states of the federation.

According to him, in Kano, “we received N100 million weekly and we can only dispense through ATM and not through the counter.

“If we are to go through the counter to dispense the money, the allocation will go in less than 10 minutes.”

He said the percentage of money received from the CBN varies on weekly basis, adding that it receives 80 per cent of what it deposited in Abuja and less than 10 per cent in Kano.

He said the reason the newly designed note was not in circulation was a result of the cashless policy of the CBN.

Ms Arerepade Akagwe, the representative of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), said the bank had taken 70 per cent of the old money it deposited with the CBN.

She said the bank collects money from CBN every day and today isn’t an exception, adding that the directive from the CBN was not to issue the old notes from the counter.

Other banks in attendance such as Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB), ECO bank, Lotus Bank and Fidelity agreed that they have collected 60 per cent of the old naira money deposited.

Lotus Bank for instance said in the last few weeks what it was receiving was insufficient, adding that it received an average of N40 million weekly and that was not sufficient because the customers are many.

Some of the lawmakers, however, queried the workability of the cashless policy, raising concerns about their constituents living in remote control.

The Chairman of the committee, Rep. Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, said the bank operators’ appearance before the committee was not a witch hunt exercise but a fact finding on issues affecting the people.

“We need to know the actual facts regarding claims by commercial bank that CBN has not released new notes and the counter claim by the CBN that it has released same.

He berated the apex bank for giving deadline on the old notes, saying it is worrisome that a time the country wanted to hold election that it would consider changing the country’s legal tender.

He said the CBN should have contacted the parliament when it wanted to embark on such nature of changing the legal tender, because the leadership of the house is not happy about it.

According to him, changing of legal tender is not peculiar to Nigeria, it happens the world over. But when the CBN wants to bring something sinister, we will blow the whistle.

“We are in a democratic government and no one can be greater than the institution of democracy,” he said.

House of Reps Majority Leader, Ado-Doguwa welcomes 28th child

Majority Leader of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa has welcomed his 28th child.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Ado-Doguwa, who represents the people of Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency of Kano State, made this known on Tuesday.

He revealed that the child was born in the last 24 hours as he responded to a congratulatory message from House Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu.

Recall that 56-years-old Ado-Doguwa, member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had in January 2020 flaunted his four wives during his swearing-in ceremony at the National Assembly.

“This is no longer news. It is no longer news because this thing happened in the last 24 hours. It is true that my beloved family has gotten an additional one person. It is a baby girl. Bouncing.

“The mother and the baby are hale hearty. The husband is still active. I am here. And I thank God that I kept my word with the House that while I had 27 I promised you that I would continue counting.

“I want by the grace of God and your prayers that the count would continue,” Ado-Doguwa said.

The Kano lawmaker also joked about creating legislation to enable families with 30 children to get an electoral polling unit.

Ado-Doguwa said: “Now that we are considering the Electoral Act amendment, when we get to the floor perhaps in the Committee of the Whole, I would appeal to my members so that we suspend relevant rules and we have a clause in the Electoral Act where it permits families that do have up to 30 kids in their comes to have an electoral polling unit in that family”.

When the Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajbiamila asked if he was working towards having a polling unit in his house with two to go, Ado-Doguwa said: “At least between now and 2023 before the elections comes, if you allow that, then I would have a polling unit within my home”.
