Minister of Interior, Aregbesola launches another passport front office in Lagos

Rauf Aregbesola the  Minister of Interior has launched another passport front office of the Nigeria Immigration Service in addition to the one he inaugurated in the Alimosho area of the state on Monday.

According to him, about half of the passport applications in the country are made in Lagos state, hence the need for more front offices.

Aregbesola said the Alimosho front desk office will ease the pressure on the three existing passport control offices in the state and curb shortages in the issuance of passports.

He said, “We are committed to expanding our Passport Issuance operations to bridge the shortage gap we face usually in urban centres like Lagos. It is this need that gave birth to the Alimosho Front Desk Office to ease the ever-increasing pressure on the three existing Passport Control Offices domiciled in Lagos.

“We promise to speed up the expansion process despite the challenge of limited resources.”

Continuing, he said the Alimosho front desk office is not an express centre or a full-fledged passport office like the ones in the Ikoyi, Alausa and FESTAC areas of the state but a place where biometric data of applicants would be collected.

He said, “A front office is where applications will be made and biometric data of the applicant will be collected. It is a non-judgemental centre, meaning that no decision will be made here, no passport will be produced here and no further processing will be done here, but the application and biometric data of the applicants will be collected and forwarded to the NIS for processing and issuing.

“We certainly need more of this in Lagos. This is because half of all passport applications are made in Lagos. At no time are less than 100,000 applicants from Lagos on the NIS portal applying for passports. We will therefore need not less than 15 of these front offices in Lagos alone, to be able to cut the application waiting period to one week.

“But due to funding challenges, the government may not be able to provide these desk offices. We will therefore need private partners that will provide the lounge. Their only involvement will be to provide the space. The offices will still be manned by NIS personnel. Having these offices will remove the bottlenecks that lead to exploitation and eliminate all the challenges we face in urban centres where applications are unusually high.”

In his remarks, Comptroller General, Nigeria Immigration Service, Isah Idris, urged the pioneer officers of the Alimosho office to live above suspicion in all their dealings with customers and to be courteous and professional in the discharge of their choice duties.

“The Passport Office remains a no-go-area for touts, passport racketeers, fake breeder documents harvesters and all sorts of undesirable elements. I wish to warn that the long arm of the law and its full force will be visited on any person who by an act of commission or omission infringes on the Passport Offences as stipulated in Section 10(1a-h) of the Immigration Act, 2015”, he added.

A source who is a member of Police Community Relations Committee in the area told our correspondent that openly homosexuality display was gaining more grounds especially in Shomolu and Akoka despite government pronouncements against the practices.

He hinted that on Friday, Valentine’s day two male homosexuals were caught in the act at a house in Morocco Road, Shomolu as they were seriously beaten by the guys in the area but were lucky to be rescued by an army officer from the Nigerian Army Sport Camp close to the scene who pleaded for them to go as they would have been lynched. He said the police needed to intensify their efforts in arresting these people in order to curb these barbaric acts in the area.

The source said there are different cases of these acts and he still recalled with a shock expression, how a gay suspect named Tola Adeosun who lives on his street at Shipeolu Street, was in April, last year caught and arrested in his house with different incriminating evidences recovered from his possession by the police. To his surprised, the evidences against suspect proofed that he was involved with another married man known as Olalekan Animashaun who lives in Shodimu Street, close to us here and other guys that comes to his apartment “Imagine a married man with a family engaging in such disgraceful act as it shows how far this immoral act has gone deep in this community” he added.

On the treatment melted out to the gay suspects in the community on valentine’s day, Sherifat expressed satisfaction on the development that people also needs to do everything possible to prevent the spread of this unholy act adding that, the government needs to be more strict on their action against this satanic act.

In the same vein, an Islamic cleric, Alfa Balogun, expressed displeasure against the homosexual act in the area, he stated young men and women need to shun the act of homosexuality if they want the mercy of God. He further opined that any person or group suspected of any unusual behaviors or relationship should be exposed as such practices is against the values of Islam and it will surely invite the wrath of God on the men and women involved in this immorality.

The cleric also advised the state government to partner with all local government areas of the state, especially the highly populated areas as Alimosho, Ikorodu, Mushin and Shomolu to educate the youths on the negative implications of engaging in homosexual activities.

Attempts by our correspondent to speak with Shomolu Divisional Police Officer on the issues prove abortive as he was not available answer questions.
