Agric minister, Abdullahi mourns death of Chief Audu Ogbeh

Senator Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, CON on behalf of the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, mourn the passing of Chief Audu Ogbeh, aged 78.

Chief Ogbeh served Nigeria in various capacities across several administrations, as Minister of Communications in the Second Republic and later as Minister of Agriculture under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, where he demonstrated exceptional commitment to national development.

The minister in a press statement seen by TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) on Monday noted that the late Chief Ogbeh was a distinguished Nigerian with a legacy of service and dedication to the country’s peace and progress, as well as its growth and development.

Abdullahi extolled Chief Ogbeh’s long-standing dedication to the service of the nation, noting that since joining politics in the 1970s as a legislator, he remained steadfast in championing progress and unity.

The statement reads partly: “He was a polyglot whose work life traversed teaching, playwriting, politics, governance, and farming. Although he earlier held the positions of Minister of Communications, and later Steel Development, from 1982 to 1983, during the Second Republic under President Shehu Shagari, it was as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (as it then was), between  2015 and 2019, that the late Chief Ogbeh was truly at home with his deep love for farming, a fact related to his parental upbringing and his practised livelihood.

“For years, Chief Ogbeh invested in cashew plantations, poultry, and rice milling, among others. He also availed willing State clients and personalities of his consulting skills in the establishment of viable agricultural projects. He was, therefore, familiar with the practical challenges of agriculture in Nigeria, and sought, during his tenure as Minister, to accelerate the country’s quest for food sovereignty.

“However vast his hands-on experience in farming was, it is instructive that the late Audu Ogbeh did not attempt to jettison the agenda of his immediate predecessor in office. Instead, he remodelled it, built on it, and implemented the new game plan with vigour and commitment.

“Chief Ogbeh was instrumental to the launch of “The Green Alternative: Agriculture Promotion Policy, 2016-2010” under which mechanisation was a thrust. Indeed, when we assumed office as Ministers two years ago, we were influenced by the landmark efforts of our predecessors, of whom Audu Ogbeh was one, in designing the Action Plan and Monitoring Framework for the implementation of the National Agricultural Technology and Innovation Policy ((NATIP 2022-2027).

“The Action Plan is designed to address critical challenges in the food supply chain, including agricultural inputs, technology, extension services, as well as post-harvest losses, the overall goal being the sustainability of the country’s food systems and contribution to economic growth.

“We are grieved by the passing of Chief Audu Ogbeh, and the nation will sorely miss his candour and formidable ideas for the country’s growth and development. We pray that the Almighty will grant the late Chief Audu Ogbeh eternal rest, and comfort his family, relatives, friends, and associates the world over.”

Agric minister mourns Niger fuel tanker explosion victims, calls for increased advocacy

The Honourable Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Niger State Government and families of the over 80 persons who lost their lives when a fallen fuel tanker exploded on Saturday at Dikko Junction, Gurara Local Government Area, Niger State.

While wishing a speedy recovery to more than 50 persons who suffered varying degrees of injuries, including burns, Sen. Sabi Abdullahi, however, praised the efforts of various emergency responders in evacuating the injured and de-escalating the spread of the inferno.

The Minister of State expressed deep sadness over the recurrent incidents of fuel tanker crashes on highways, with the resultant human casualties, severe injuries, and destruction of adjoining properties. He recalled that barely four months ago, in September 2024, a ghastly fuel tanker crash claimed several lives on Agaie-Lapai Road, also in Niger State.

“Sorrow should not be our routine experience over frequent fuel tanker crashes on our roads,” the Minister of State said. “Scores are often killed in these incidents, and the spectacle of mass burial of the victims burnt beyond recognition is a wake-up call to all stakeholders to avert these types of occurrences.”

Sen. Sabi Abdullahi, an indigene of Niger State and the Baraden Borgu, noted that as a bridge between the northern and southern parts of the country, Niger State takes a heavy burden of axial load of haulage trucks. He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, for the renewed commitment to complete the reconstruction, within the next 14 months, of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano dual carriageway, which passes through  Niger State.

According to the Minister of State, “part of what is urgently needed are advocacy programmes undertaken by stakeholders to address fallen fuel tanker issues, because no part of the country is insulated from the gory incidents” “Communities need to enlighten their members on the precautions to take whenever there is an incident involving a fuel tanker. In particular, they must be reminded that fuel is highly volatile and that no amount of spilled fuel they are trying to scoop is worth the tragedy that usually lurks around, “ Sen. Abdullahi observed.

He also called on Road Transport Owners and Road Transport Workers, especially those engaged in haluage of hazardous materials such as fuel, to organize frequent refresher programmes for their drivers, apprentices and all who are involved in the delivery chain.

Sabi Abdullahi said, adding that, “there are on-going programmes, projects, and initiatives whose maturation would yield salutary results by significantly easing prevailing challenges and resetting the country on the path of growth and shared prosperity.”

He said that at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, there would be intensive focus on continuous cropping of identified staples all-year round, as a sure way of effectively boosting production and tackling food inflation.

“We are going to see a lot of impetus with regard to soil health, which is critical to sustainable agricultural production,” the Minister of State noted.

He pointed out that increased engagement with the Co-operative Movement among farmers, feed and fodder development for the livestock sector, as well as rural infrastructure and agri-based economy, are priority issues for the Ministry this year.

A Veterinary Surgeon, the Minister of State was born on January 10, 1967. He was an officer in the then Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, before joining the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria. He thereafter, in the 8th and 9th National Assembly, became a two-term Senator representing Niger North Senatorial District. He was Spokesman for the 8th Senate and Deputy Minority Whip during the 9th Senate. He was appointed Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in August 2023.

  • Death penalty: Gov. Fayose faults proposed hate speech bill

Governor Peter Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has faulted Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi-sponsored bill that recommends death penalty for purveyors of hate speech.

In a statement today, Fayose said public office holders are responsible to the people, and hence, there is need for the people to assess and tell those in power the truth, whether it augur with them or not.

“Those of us occupying public offices are doing so in trust for the people, we are not their lords. The power of the people is greater than the power of the people in power.

“When you say the truth to power, tell those of us in power what we are doing wrong, it is not Hate Speech. Rather, it is patriotism.

“If you are in power and afraid of Nigerians telling you the bitter truth, resign and go to your house,” the Ekiti state executive Governor said.

TheNewsGuru reports the hate speech bill proposes that anyone found guilty of any form of hate speech could face death by hanging upon conviction.

Senator Abdullahi explaining why death penalty was included in the bill said the hate speech bill has slated some processes which must be exhausted before a person is subjected to the maximum punishment.

“On this issue of Hate Speech, I stand with Nigerians and anything they say to make the country better,” Fayose, however, said.
