  • Amaechi holds surprise 50th birthday party for Basorge

On a rain drenched Lagos night, and despite the traffic snarl which made movement almost impossible, the full cream of the entertainment world, especially the Comedy wing still gathered at Villa Medicci, an urbane restaurant at Victoria Island, with a secret mission: to pay one of their own a big surprise party.

Basorge Tariah, the lover boy in the Do Good comedy series on television had four days earlier turned the corner, washed his chubby hands and trimmed his now greying beard, and joined the elders class, which begins at 50.

Transport minister, Rotimi Amaechi, was the brain behind one of the best kept secret surprised party.

He coopted Okey Bakassi, who eventually coordinated, ringing up close friends to swim their way to the eatery known for its famous guests which often includes Mike Adenuga, the recluse owner of Globacom.

Fifty top of the range comedians, actors/actresses, musicians and so forth were cornered into the secret pact. The Ajegunle music maestro, Daddy Showkey had flown in with Basorge from Portharcourt that morning and kept a monitoring eye on him without giving out any hint.

Former Rivers state Governor, Amaechi, flew in from Abuja and managed to sequester Basorge in his room at the Signature wing of Eko L’Meridien. Along with TheNewsGuru.com publisher, Mideno Bayagbon, Basorge who came in with a mutual friend, was kept engaged.

The message was simple: a friend was organising a dinner for Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi and the ex Governor decided to invite some friends to come along with him. Basorge fell for it.

Julius Agwu and his very beautiful wife along with their son and daughter, kept the co-conspirators waiting even as the rain flogged the twilight out of Lagos and coated it with an anxious, expectant hue. Amaechi was restless.

He does not want to keep invited guests waiting. Dressed in a suit he has owned for three years, the anxiously stubborn ex Governor, became restless. For him, it is indecorous to keep guests waiting for no reason. At his prompting, the train then all troop down, and by some stroke of coincidence, voila, Julius Agwu surfaces and the short trip to Villa Medicci begins.

Lagos drivers stewing in the crawling traffic, simply ignored the blaring siren and a three minutes journey stretched into fifteen, and that with some manoeuvring. Victoria Island, Ikoyi and other areas of Lagos were on a lock down.

Surprise, surprise! The venue was empty, to the shock of all on the minister’s train. Save for Daddy Showkey, Okey Bakassi and a few other guests, there was no opportunity to shout Surprise! Happy birthday Basorge.

A big problem. How do you keep a now anxious Basorge, who looks around and sees a cake marked 50 from getting on the know? He moves around, accosts Daddy Showkey: “ol’ boy what is going on” he asked. He moves to TheNewsGuru.com publisher, then Okey Bakassi, with the same question.

But then the stream began, the indomitable Mayor Akinpelu strolls in, so did Bovi. Kate Henshaw who was practically forced and arm-twisted by Rotimi Amaechi to put aside her steamingly hot quarrel and seeming enmity, with her best friend, Basorge, got all eyes turned when she walks in, in a beautifully designed dress that exposes all of those her shapely long legs on heels. And she did walk the walk!

Her smile lights up the room and soon that her peculiar laughter also rings the room. But that was before the tears! began. Another story that ends well.

All who know Kate Henshaw she cries as easily as those her beautiful smiles and laughter. The cat must for now remain in the bag: why Kate Henshaw cried so unashamedly and later burst into those her throaty laughter. She almost steals the show but then like they say in Warri, it ended up a bracket first for her and Basorge.
Mudi, Gbenga Adeyinka the 1st, Lillian, and a plethora of comedians flood the venue and the event kicks off to fine wine and great european food, spiced with goat meat pepper soup!

The night was off to an excellent roll and the rain hammering the roofs and streets outside, with the annoying traffic jam became a distant memory.

It was Basorge’s day and the many testimonies and yabis from his friends turn the light on and laughter envelops Villa Medicci. Comedians gathered and ribs had to crack.
  • Secession agitation: Jonathan’s defeat bigger threat than Biafra – Amaechi

…Says Nigeria can never break up

The Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi on Tuesday said the defeat of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 Presidential elections by President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was “a bigger threat than Biafra”.

Amaechi said Nigeria would have plunged into another civil war in 2015, had the election results been tampered with.

The former Governor of Rivers State made these statements at the maiden edition of the CKN News annual lecture in Lagos.

He argued that the country cannot break up.

The removal of President Jonathan was a bigger threat than Biafra. Nigeria was inching towards the civil war. So, forget the talk about secession; Nigeria cannot breakup,” Amaechi said.

Speaking on the topic: “The Role of The Social Media in the Socio-economic and Political Development of Nigeria”, he noted that whilst the social media was generating huge funds on the one hand, it was also misinforming members of the public.

Amaechi added: “They misinform the public. They have no rules except for the few that are credible and it is because those ones rose from the traditional media. Social media can destroy this country. It is good for society and its polity and it is also very bad.”

  • South-East not marginalised in rail lines development – Amaechi

South-East not marginalised in rail lines development – Amaechi

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi on Thursday said that the South-East has not been denied the opportunity of using the rail services, and also not excluded from the 2016-2018 external borrowing plan.

Amaechi made this clarification before the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, while responding to allegation on the outright omission of Eastern corridor rail line in the 2016-2018 external borrowing (Rolling) plan.

According to the minister, it is not true that Igbo’s have been denied the opportunity of using the rail.

He said that the two main rail projects in the country, which was the Lagos-Kano and the coastal rail from Lagos to Calabar were not conceived nor approved by the present administration.

The minister said that the present administration was only implementing the rail projects in three segments, which was Lagos-Ibadan, Kaduna-Kano and Calabar-Port Harcourt through counterpart funding.

He said that the China EXIM bank covers 85 per cent while Federal Government was to cover the remaining 15 per cent including VAT and land acquisition fee.

What I heard was that, the Igbo’s said they have been denied the right to rail and I thought we should debunk that, it is not true that Igbo’s have been denied the opportunity of using the rail.

I will start by saying that they are included; none of these contracts was awarded by us.

The Lagos –Kano was awarded by President Olusegun Obansanjo in 2006.

Which cover Lagos-Ibadan-Ilorin-Minna-Kaduna-Kano, with a branch line from Minna-Abuja-Kaduna, which was awarded at the cost of $8.3billion.

In 2014, President Goodluck Jonathan awarded the coastal rail line, which the Igbos was included, the rail takes-off from Lagos-Shagamu-Ijebu Ode-Benin-Sapele-Warri-Yenagoa with a siding to Otuoke to Port Harcourt.

If you know the geography of Nigeria very well, from Port Harcourt, you can go to Uyo without going to Aba and that is what is called the East-West road.

But to ensure that the Igbos were included it took off from Port Harcourt to Aba and Aba is part of South East in Abia state, which is longer and costly to Uyo, then Calabar,“he said.

He said that an additional section from Benin-Abudu-Agbor-Uko-Ogwashukwu-Asaba to Onisha, stating that Onisha was in Anambra.
According to him, It will be wrong for anybody to say that the Igbo’s were not carried along in course of rail development.

Amaechi, said that the coastal rail from Lagos to calabar was awarded at 11.974 billion dollars, which was brought down to 11.1billion dollars under Buhari administration, saving 800million dollars.

So, both projects may not have covered the entire North East and South East but at least it got to South East either through Aba or Onisha.

He, however, said that because of the huge financially implication of the projects, it was divided into three segments which are Lagos-Ibadan, Kaduna-Kano and Calabar to Port Harcourt.

The minister said that the next segment was the Lagos-Ibadan, saying that the loan was applied for and 1.5billion dollars was approved but yet to be accessed.

Earlier, the Committee Chairman, Shehu sani said that the meeting was called for the minister to explain the rationale behind the non inclusion of the eastern part in the external borrow plan.

He said that the omission was causing controversies which needed to be cleared by the ministry.

This meeting was called by the committee in respect to the resolution on the outright omission of eastern corridor rail line.

And the request for approval of the Federal Government 2016-2018 external borrowing plan, the concern is that, these have being raising some form of controversies across the country.

This committee was mandated to invite you to explain to Nigerians, the rationale behind the non inclusion of the eastern corridor in the rail line in the external borrowing plan of the Federal Government.

This invitation is also for you to give us the technical details of the proposed rail line projects. “ he said.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari had in a letter to the Senate dated April 21, said that the China Exim Bank had approved 5.9 billion dollar loan for rail projects across the country.

The minister also used the opportunity to appeal to the committee and the National Assembly to fast track the approval of the loan to as to commence the implementation of the project on time.

  • PDP is for ‘the old school’ – Tonye Princewill explains why he opted for APC

PDP is for ‘the old school’ – Tonye Princewill explains why he opted for APC

Tonye Princewill, Labour Party gubernatorial candidate in Rivers State during the 2015 general elections has defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Princewill had penultimate week formally tendered his resignation from LP, explaining that he did so because he wanted to make more impact in the lives of his people.

Confirming his new move in a statement made available to journalists on Friday, the former guber candidate said after a careful study of the Nigerian political terrain, he decided to pitch his tent with the APC because of the pragmatic leadership style of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

Princewill said he also had the choice of joining the former ruling PDP but it was for the old school and had no space for the young minds like him.

He explained that, “PDP, especially in Rivers state, is for the old school, analog, very well seasoned politicians who have been in charge in one form or the other since 1999. Their top is too heavy.”

The politician also announced that he will no longer run for the position of Governor of Rivers state, but would be rededicating his time and energy to ensuring youth involvement in politics from within the APC.

He said, “After my recent resignation from the Labour Party, the path has been made clear for me to chart a new course for me and those who respect the politics that I preach. I have come to realize that no party is perfect and only we as Nigerians can solve our own problems.

“So instead of waiting for our people to wake up, we have to work with those we can see. I have been critical of both parties but in my search for alternatives, it is clear to me now, that Nigerians are the same as our politicians. All parties reflect us, the very subtle difference is in he who leads and the ideology they preach.

“In the choice between a Buhari or Osibanjo and a Fayose or Wike, my choice remains the duo of the APC every single day. But all politics is local and the affairs in my state need to be foremost in my mind too. Here the choice is between the leadership of Wike and that of Amaechi.

“Like an umbrella. Nothing comes down and since there is no vacancy at the top, there is no chance for young, fresh faces to grow. I don’t belong there and neither do you. Wike is trying his best in some areas, but the Governor’s best is clearly not good enough. If his few projects executed could feed the people and genuinely reduce the high rate of youth unemployment, it would have been better. My recent tour of the state has revealed that many of those who were angry with Amaechi in 2015, have cut their noses to spite their faces,” Princewill said.

He also lambasted the current governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike for his leadership style, describing him as an old wine repackaged in an old bottle.

His words, “There is nothing new about Nyesom E. Wike. It’s old wine in an old bottle forced on you to drink because of your anger with Amaechi. If I can reconcile with Amaechi, so can you. Now we have a chance to build a party of patriots. Come and help us. We need you.

“Wike is doing the best he can. He and his team are simply not built for governance. They lack the capacity. You do not expect a mango tree to produce oranges. We have had a good 18 years of different kind of projects. What we need in Rivers state now is Mr. Jobs.”

“As I have repeatedly said, I am no longer running for the position of Governor of Rivers state, but would be rededicating my time and my energy to ensuring youth involvement in politics from within the APC, where I feel I can make more impact. In 2007, I and Amaechi were fighting for the same position so when we decided to work together, we did so as partners. Now it is different.”

  • Amaechi rejects Wike’s award, calls it ‘poisoned chalice’

Amaechi rejects Wike’s award, calls it ‘poisoned chalice’

Minister of Transport and Former Governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi has rejected an alleged award of honour claimed to be coming from the current Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, saying any award from Wike is a poisoned chalice.

In a statement issued to newsmen on Friday by the Minister’s media office, Mr. Amaechi also said that the claimed award coming from a man who has made it clear from the onset of his administration that he is his (Amaechi’s) arch enemy does not relate well with the broken relationship between them.

Amaechi however urged Governor Wike to publicly apologise to him for accusing of of being the owner of the recently discovered $43m found in an Ikoyi apartment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC or face the wrath of the law.

The statement read thus: “In the past couple of days, Minister of Transportation and immediate past governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has been inundated with calls and enquiries from journalists about a purported award/honour to him from Nyesom Wike, the current governor of Rivers State.

“The minister was shown a publication of the Rivers State government indicating his name as one of many others to be given awards by Nyesom Wike. But as at today, Amaechi has not received any communication from Nyesom Wike and/or Rivers State government in this respect.

“Be that as it may, we want to state categorically that whatever Wike claims to be giving to Amaechi is a poisoned chalice that has been unequivocally rejected by the minister.

“Firstly, the purported award itself is a contradiction of monumental proportions, a contradiction that can only come from a warped and perverted mind. From day one as governor, Wike has made it his sole, one-point agenda to attack, abuse, insult and falsely denigrate Amaechi, his immediate predecessor and erstwhile benefactor.

“Since he became governor, Wike spends most of his time making reckless, deeply irresponsible, malicious, false allegations against Amaechi, as he attempts, albeit fruitlessly, to malign and destroy the outstandingly superb performance and legacy of Amaechi in Rivers State.

“So, what is the bases or criteria for Wike to give an award/honour to a man he (Wike) has rashly attacked and called all sorts of unprintable names in the past two years?

For Wike to do a 360 and give an award to a predecessor, he (Wike) has consistently but misleadingly and deceitfully called Satan, Judas, non-performer, thief and only this week a sponsor of cultists, shows evidently that Wike suffers from a grave but rare form of psychosomatic malady.

“Secondly, what will Amaechi tell Rivers People when he goes to collect an award from that man-child who sits in Government House that is directly or indirectly responsible for the present deplorable state of sufferings, economic and infrastructural decay, violence, crime, insecurity, kidnappings and killings in Rivers State? Amaechi will not accept any award from a petty lowlife conman, who rode to power on the blood of Rivers people.

“Thirdly, the office of governor of any state is a prestigious, very dignified office and the occupant of that office who holds it in trust for his people is expected to act, talk and behave responsibly and decorously. When the governor talks, he should talk with facts and must be able to prove his claims.

Most unfortunately for Rivers State, Wike possess non of these qualities. Wike is everything a governor should not be, with virtually no redeeming qualities. Amaechi will not accept any award from this kind of lying, reckless, irresponsible and brutal character that has become the laughing stock of the nation.

“Finally, We will not relent to remind Wike and insist that he must go to court, like he vowed, to prove his frivolous claims that the over $43million Ikoyi money and luxury apartment (found by EFCC), belongs to Amaechi and were stolen from Rivers State by Amaechi; or be ready to face the wrath of the law at the appropriate time; the wrath of the people and ultimately the wrath of God, which no constitutional immunity can protect him from.

“The only other alternative is for him to publicly apologize and tell us that he wickedly and maliciously lied when he had that disgraceful, middle of the night press conference to push the false narrative that Amaechi owns the money and apartment,” the statement concluded.

  • ‘Again, Governor Wike Goes Mad’ says Amaechi

‘Again, Governor Wike Goes Mad’ says Amaechi

Former Rivers state Governor and current Minister of Transport, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi has replied an alleged vindictment hauled at him by the current Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, saying Mr. Wike, has again “gone mad.”

The Transport Minister was responding to an alleged Governor Wike’s allegation that he (Amaechi) is a sponsor of cultist groups and activities in the state. Mr. Amaechi said Wike has lied again as he had been lying before, challenging the Rivers Governor to provide any proof to substantiate his claims.

In a statement made available to TheNewsGuru.com on Tuesday, Mr. Amaechi urged Governor Wike to approach the court rather than trying to draw attentions to himself from Nigerians who have become uninterested in him and his “lies against Amaechi.”

the statement in full: “Yesterday, the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike continued to display unabated, his exclusive and uncommon strand of gubernatorial madness when he attempted to link his mentor, benefactor and predecessor Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as a sponsor of cultists in Rivers State. And as usual, Wike did not provide any shred of evidence to prove his claims.

We know that Wike craves attention and always want to be seen in the media to be “exposing and fighting” Amaechi. However, we will burst his bubble this time and will not indulge him or dignify his crass stupidity. If he has any sense, Wike ought to know by now that no one takes him seriously anymore, especially whenever he makes those cooked-up vile, malicious allegations against the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi. This his new concocted story is not any different from the previous numerous false allegations he has made against Amaechi.

Again, Wike’s new cult fabrication against Amaechi fits into Wike’s style and pattern of distraction and obfuscation- tell a lie to distract, and then tell another lie and another lie to distract our attention from the previous lie, creating an endless web of lies, confusion and deception. Same pattern of telling blatant lies with no proof or intention to prove his claims. Sadly, this is the kind of irresponsible, reckless, disgraceful garrulous, scallywag conman that presides over the affairs of Rivers State

Wike wants us to forget that only recently, he made an allegation that the over $43million found in an Ikoyi apartment by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) were stolen Rivers State funds kept in the apartment by Amaechi. Wike had also lied that the luxury Ikoyi apartment belonged to Amaechi.

But we won’t forget. We remember vividly that on the night of Friday, April 14, during his hurriedly arranged shambolic press briefing, Wike had threatened the President Buhari administration with fire and brimstone, vowing the mother-of-all legal action against the Federal government if the over $43million was not given to him within seven days. His 7-day ultimatum had long expired, yet no action, whether legal or otherwise by Wike to prove his malicious allegations and claim to the money. On Friday, May 6, when another opportunity was opened for Wike to prove his frivolous allegations against Amaechi and claim the money before Justice Muslim Hassan of the Federal High Court, Lagos; neither Wike nor his lawyers were any where near the court to claim the money. Again, another no show.

Nyesom Wike, also used his lackeys and minions like former President Goodluck Jonathan campaigner, Femi Fani-Kayode, Lere Olayinka(an aide to Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State) and one Senator George Sekibo who like a clown, foolishly blew a whistle on the floor of the senate to push his (Wike’s) false, malicious narrative of Amaechi’s ownership of the Ikoyi money. Nigerians are sick and tired of Governor Wike’s shameful spectacles, his nuisance value of wanting to entertain us regularly, with different frivolous stories about Amaechi.

This fresh attempt by Wike to distract Nigerians from his earlier false, politically motivated allegations against Amaechi on the over $43million Ikoyi money, will not fly.

We will continue to remind Wike and insist that he must go to court, like he vowed (as he goes, he can also take his minions and lackeys with him), to prove his frivolous claims that the over $43million Ikoyi money and luxury apartment belongs to Amaechi and were stolen from Rivers State by Amaechi; or be ready to face the wrath of the law at the appropriate time (constitutional immunity for governors is not for life) the wrath of the people and ultimately the wrath of God, which no constitutional immunity can protect him from.

  • $5.9bn China Exim Bank rail loan: Senate summons Amaechi over exclusion of South-East

$5.9bn China Exim Bank rail loan: Senate summons Amaechi over exclusion of South-East

The Senate on Tuesday summoned the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, to explain why the eastern rail corridor was omitted in current government borrowing plan.

The Senate said the minister should appear before its Committee on Foreign and Local Debts to explain details of the loan to be obtained from China Exim Bank.

The invitation followed a motion raised during plenary by Sen. Eyinnaya Abaribe, who claimed that the Eastern Corridor Rail Line was completed excluded from the Federal Government 2016-2018 External Borrowing Plan.

TheNewsGuru.com recalls that President Muhammadu Buhari had in a letter to the Senate dated April 21, said that the China Exim Bank had approved 5.9 billion dollar loan for rail projects across the country.

Abaribe while presenting the motion observed that the loan being sought only covered the western corridor, excluding the eastern corridor which runs from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri.

According to him, since the loan will be repaid for by all sections of the country, every part of Nigeria should be taken into consideration.

Abaribe noted that the Railway Master Plan developed by the Ministry of Transport was not referred to in the current borrowing plan.

He argued that for the railway project to have meaningful impact on the development of the country, it should cover all parts of Nigeria.

Contributing, the Deputy Senate President, Mr Ike Ekweremadu said the rail project should cover all the corridors.

“I’m aware that the Federal Government is committed to rehabilitating and upgrading the railway infrastructure in Nigeria since Obasanjo’s regime, but the eastern line still remains in the old gauge, it is not on the standard gauge,” he said.

Ekweremadu said for every part of Nigeria to have standardised railway lines, “we must agree to obtain the necessary loan that will give us standard gauge in all parts of the country.

“We must ensure that all parts of the country are connected so that people can move from one part to another”.

However, Sen. Gbenga Ashafa (APC-Lagos) faulted the motion, saying it contained inadequate and inaccurate information.

He said that when the present administration came to power, it took into cognisance the Aba-Onitsha rail line.

“Let us do away with ethnic sentiments. All areas must be covered. Government is a continuum; the master plan is on ground.

“All sectors will be covered as promised by the Federal Government. The loans must be secured and approved,” he said.

In his remarks, President of the Senate, Dr Bukola saraki said that “at the leadership level we are taking up this matter with the executive.

“And that was what led to the amendment of the letter that came from the President.

“The first letter that came from the President did not specify that the South-East, North-East axis must also be standard gauge.

“We then insisted at the leadership level that every part of the country must benefit from the same and there must be a standard gauge. And that has been done.

“We have refered this to the Committee on Foreign and Local Debts,” he said.

Saraki then called on his colleagues to ensure that the spirit of Buhari’s letter was followed through while also calling for sincerity and commitment in processing the loan.

  • Amaechi withdrew N53billion from state coffers without due process – Wike

Amaechi withdrew N53billion from state coffers without due process – Wike

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State on Thursday said the state is incapacitated to carry out some project for the benefit of residents because the immediate past administration under the leadership of former governor, now Minister of Transport, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi withdrew over N53 billion from state coffers without following due process.

Wike said this on Thursday when he assented to the Rivers State Reserve Fund (Repeal) law of 2017 and four other bills.

Wike noted that the State Reserve Fund (Repeal) Law becomes imperative as the previous law was no longer relevant due to the “financial recklessness” of the immediate past administration.

The governor stated that the past administration refused to obey the law as it carelessly withdrew funds from the savings meant for the future.

“Between February 12, 2014 and May 27, 2015, the immediate past administration in the state withdrew N53billion from the funds without passing through due process.

“The State is today suffering from the financial recklessness of that administration as it squandered state resources through illegal withdrawals,” he added.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that other bills assented by the governor are: Rivers State Education (Return of Schools) Amendment Law of 2017, Rivers State Honours Law of 2017, Rivers State University Law of 2017 and Rivers State University Teaching Hospital Law of 2017.

Wike commended the legislature for its commitment toward the rapid development of the state after assenting to the bills.

The governor noted that the Return of School law was important because it allowed the State Government to intervene in mission schools already returned to their owners.

He stressed that the law would help in sustaining the quality of education in mission schools returned by the government to their previous owners.

The governor stressed that the State University Law of 2017 was created to avert the loss of accreditation of several courses by the university due to directives by the National Universities Commission.

Also, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mr Ikuinyi Ibani, said that the lawmakers would always place the interest of the state above any other interest in discharging their legislative responsibilities.

The Speaker lauded the governor for his developmental strides and good governance in the State.

  • Reps threaten to stop funds allocated to Amaechi’s ministry

Reps threaten to stop funds allocated to Amaechi’s ministry

Four committees of the House of Representatives on Tuesday jointly expressed dissatisfaction over the implementation of the Federal Ministry of Transportation’s 2016 Budget.

They are Committees on Aviation; Land Transport; Maritime Safety and Administration; Ports, Harbours and Waterways.

The committees, which visited the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja on oversight function, threatened to give zero allocation to the ministry in 2017. Mr Mohammed Bago, the Chairman, Committee on Maritime Safety and Administration, said that the ministry presented different documents to the committees which did not contain facts.

He said that the ministry had received N243 billion and had yet to spend it, adding that if the money was not used before the end of the month, it would receive zero allocation in 2017.

“The different positions made to the committee of the house on both land transport, ports and harbour, maritime safety and administration as well as aviation has varied.

“We have received three different documents till date and all of them are not consistent and that is why we have asked for a new document to ascertain the value of what this project is all about.

“We are not going to appropriate on this budget until we have the fact and figure and if we do not have the facts and figure, the ministry of transport will get zero allocation.

“They have received 243 billion and they have not spent it when Ministry of Health needs money because people are dying of meningitis, Nigerian soldiers are dying in Sambisa, no money to fund the soldiers.

“The ministry of transportation is seating on billions of Nigerians’ naira released to it and is not utilised.’’ Dr. Patrick Asadu, Chairman of the Committee on Ports, Harbours and Waterways, said that members were at the ministry to ensure that money given to the ministry was well spent. He said that the committee was not satisfied with the document presented to it, adding that the money was not well spent. “

Our being here is to help the ministry to ensure that money given to it was spent for what it was given for. “ But when this money is not well spent, we are not going to release further money; we are trying to look at what happened in 2016 budget; we are insisting that the ministry spends it or we give it to other agencies.

Mr Aminu Sani, Chairman, Committee on Land Transport, said the budget presentation and performance presented before the joint committee was not impressive. He said most of the items presented in the document were not in conformity with the expenditure.

According to him, the direct expenditure of the ministry is zero performance in terms of budget implementation. Earlier, Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation, said that N60 billion had been paid for the Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge rail but there was a challenge with the counterpart fund.

He said that the Chinese EXIM Bank was to fund 85 per cent of the project initially, but it was currently funding 78 per cent.

He said that the bank insisted it would not pay for land, survey and tax, stating that with the current foreign exchange rate and the extension of the rail to the ports, the project could not be completed this year.

‘Stop making unguarded remarks against legislature,’ Senate warns Amaechi

THE Senate described statement by the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi that the refusal of the National Assembly to approve the request of the government for foreign loan that will be used for counterpart funding was frustrating the construction of the Lagos-Ibadan and Ibadan-Ilorin-Minna -Kano rail lines as false, misrepresenting and contradictory.

In a statement Wednesday by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Senate asked the former governor of Rivers State to as a matter of urgency, withdraw the statement, adding that what he said was contradictory to available facts and what he said was not in tune with the position of the government in which he is serving.

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi was alleged to have made the remarks in Ilorin on Monday during the North Central Town Hall meeting by the Federal Government.

Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, said, “As at today, the only request for approval from the Executive for loan was the one dated January 27, 2017 and signed by Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo seeking a “resolution of the National Assembly For the Issuance of USD 1 Billion EuroBond In the International Capital Market For The Funding of the 2016 Budget Deficit” and we immediately granted the approval.

“Also, in the letter quoted above, the Government mentioned the two rail lines cited by the minister as part of the projects for which the EuroBond will be utilised. So, we cannot understand what the grouse of Mr. Amaechi is.

“We view that statement based on false and misinformed premise strongly as a mere attempt to incite the people against the National Assembly. The Minister should therefore withdraw that statement. Furthermore, the National Assembly will take up the matter with the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

“As a former Speaker of a state House of Assembly, we believe that a minister like Amaechi should always check his facts and refrain from making unguarded and inciting remarks against the legislature.

“What Nigeria needs at this point is for all arms of government to work together and create the synergy necessary to take Nigeria out of the present economic crisis we have found ourselves.

Comments designed to infuriate one arm of government or incite the people against another arm of the government will do no one any good and we do not expect such statements from a Minister in the present government.”
