  • NFF crisis: Court to hear appeal motion against Amaju Pinnick, others March 29

NFF crisis: Court to hear appeal motion against Amaju Pinnick, others March 29

A Federal High Court (FHC), Abuja will, on March 29, hear a motion seeking an order to grant leave to appeal against the ruling discharging and acquitting Amaju Pinnick and others in a criminal charge filed against them.
Justice Inyang Ekwo fixed the date after counsel to the applicants, Dr Celsius Ukpong, informed the court of the motion on notice filed to the effect.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Chairman, National Footballers Association of Nigeria, Harrison Jalla and a staff of the association, Tunde Aderibigbe, filed the motion with suit number FHC/ABJ/ CR/93/2019.
Others listed in the motion include the Federal Republic of Nigeria as complainant/respondent; Sunusi Mohammed, Seyi Akinwumi, Shehu Dikko, Amaju Melvin Pinnick as defendants/respondents and Yusuf Ahmed Fresh.
The duo, in the application dated Dec. 16, 2020 and filed same date by their lawyer, sought “an order of the court granting leave to appeal as an interested parties against the ruling of this honourable court in charge No: FHC/ABJ/CR/93/2019 discharging and acquitting the defendants in this matter.”
They said the motion was brought on the grounds that “at the day set for arraignment ,the applicants and other aggrieved people were in court to testify after the arraignment,.
They argued that when the prosecutor who took over from the agency that filed the charge suddenly apply to withdraw the charge in order to study the file or whatever only for the learned trial judge to discharge and acquit the defendants without any proper arraignment and trial.
“The applicants/interested party in the matter, in public interest, took risk and make a lot of sacrifices to complain and gather a lot of evidence to try the defendants before the defendants were finally charge to court.
“The defendants have been using the ruling of the learned trial court as a shield successfully against further prosecution in the matter that is yet to be tried.
“The prosecutions have neglected/refused to appeal against this decision.”
The applicants, who stated that it was immaterial whether the prosecution was interested to prosecute the matter or not, stressed that the matter should not end without proper prosecution “where witnesses who are willing are not allowed to testify.”
According to them, the prosecution cannot agree with defence counsel to dismiss a charge and acquit the defendants not minding the implication of such agreement.
“The interested parties/applicants were the nominal complainants and were acting in good faith and in public interest to see to the end of this trial where both parties are heard before the case is determined.
“The complainant, Section 335 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) is referring to, is the nominal complainant and not the prosecuting counsel. See FRNV.ONONYE 2018 LPELR -45067
“The complainants or victims of the offence did not compound this offence to warrant the prosecuting counsel to agree to withdraw the charge so as to entitled the defendants to acquittal. SEE PML. NIG LTD. V. FRN (2017) LPELR -43480(SC),” they averred.
In the draft notice of appeal, the appellants stated that they were dissatisfied with the decision of a FHC delivered by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu on Nov. 5, 2019, in charge number FHC/ABJ/CR/93/2019 wherein the defendants were discharged and acquitted.
In their grounds of appeal, they argued that Justice Ojukwu erred in law when she held that defendants have been discharge and acquitted for offences that has not been tried.

Besides, they also argued that the prosecuting counsel from the office of the Attorney-General took over the matter for the first time from an agency that filed the charge and decided to compound the offence without recourse to primary complainant who were in court about to witness the trial, among others.

Justice Ekwo fixed March 29 to hear the motion.

NAN reports that Pinnick is the President of NFF and a FIFA council member.

AFCON: Eguavoen stops Pinnick, other guests from seeing Super Eagles in dressing room

Coach Augustine Eguavoen has stopped President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick and other guests from seeing the Super Eagles in their dressing room.

Eguavoen made this known ahead of the Super Eagles encounter against Tunisia at a press conference, where he stressed the measure was to ensure his players are not distracted.

Against Egypt and Sudan, Pinnick was in the dressing room at half time to motivate the Super Eagles, but Eguavoen has said the half-time break is needed for the players and coaches to discuss tactics.

“We talked about timing and I am still talking about it. It’s our culture – motivation is good. Guests can have short discussions with the team at the restaurant and not inside the dressing room.

“Against Egypt was the only time when the NFF president and the Air Peace president came to see the team and it was five minutes. In the second and third games, no one came to see the team. I don’t think this will happen tomorrow (Sunday),” Eguavoen said.

TNG reports the Super Eagles at the Stade Roumdé Adjia, will play Tunisia at 8 pm today.

  • New Super Eagles coach will resume at AFCON – Amaju Pinnick

New Super Eagles coach will resume at AFCON – Amaju Pinnick

The new Super Eagles manager to be hired by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) would most likely supervise the national team at next month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) if a deal can be struck immediately between both parties .

This much was disclosed yesterday by NFF President Amaju Pinnick in Lagos, adding the new manager can take over from Super Eagles caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen amid speculations that one of Jose Mourinho’s protégées, Portuguese Jose Morais, is favourite for the job.

“I can’t be categorical about who would be the new Super Eagles manager,” Pinnick said. “Of course, we have spoken to three top coaches and it included some of those names already being speculated.

“You know that Nigeria is a country where any top coach can make an immediate impact and based on that there is no top coach that

“We’ve discussed with Jose Peresiro, Jose Morais and Mladen Krstajić who has gone to Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv but we have our internal due process as far as head hunting a coach for the Super Eagles and we are working in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.”

Pinnick said the choice of would-be Super Eagles manager will be hinged on the antecedent of the coach as far as discipline is concerned; his hunger for winning trophies and the person must ready to make Nigeria his home.

Pressed on the likely resumption of the new manager, Pinnick said there was no time to rigmarole hence the fellow would assume immediately.

“What else would we be waiting for when the technical committee has submitted their report?” Pinnick asked rhetorically. “Once the board approved their choice, what would the new coach be observing if we are able to sign a contract before the AFCON?

“ He is coming to work and I was so impressed when I spoke with one of the coaches last night (Tuesday) as he shared the strengths and weaknesses of all our players; so we are not going to experiment.

“ Why can’t we win the AFCON ? We have a collection of the best young players . Of course , Eguavoen can do it but we also need somebody who can do it better .

“ We also need input from the outside but in case we can’t finalise a contract , we shall build capacity around the team to Cameroon but I won’t tell you that if we had the contract signed and sealed, the new coach won’t lead the Super Eagles to AFCON,” Pinnick noted.

BREAKING: Amaju Pinnick elected into FIFA Council

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Melvin Pinnick, was on Friday in Rabat, Morocco elected into the FIFA Council – the highest decision-making organ in world football.

He attained the exalted seat after defeating his only rival, incumbent Walter Nyamilandu of Malawi by 43 votes to 8 at the Congress held inside the Royal Ballroom of the Sofitel Hotel in Morocco’s administrative capital.

Four of Pinnick’s five rivals, Lamin Kaba Bajo (The Gambia), Wallace Karia (Tanzania), Nick Mwendwa (Kenya) and Andrew Kamanga (Zambia) threw in the towel before the vote and opted to back the Nigerian.

General Secretary of Nigeria Football Federation, Dr Mohammed Sanusi casted Nigeria’s vote.

It is a remarkable case of rapid global football boardroom upliftment for a man who, a little over six-and-half years ago, had no intention of contesting for even board membership of the Nigeria Football Federation, but has now been in the post for six-and-half years (becoming the first person to democractically secure a second term), won election as Member of the CAF Executive Committee, served as CAF’s 1st Vice President, still serving as Member of the Organizing Committee for FIFA Competitions, and now a reverred member of the world’s highest decision-making organ for football.

Pinnick’s entry into the 37-member FIFA Council came at the 43rd Ordinary and Elective General Assembly of CAF, and was accomplished hours after the man he supported for the CAF Presidency, Dr Patrice Motsepe of South Africa, mounted the ‘throne’ unchallenged.

    • Motsepe’s challengers Augustine Senghor of Senegal, Ahmed Yahya of Mauritania and Jacques Anouma of Cote d’Ivoire had all withdrawn from the race before today’s poll.

The elevation is for a four-year term, and automatically makes Pinnick a Member of the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football.

A man who sets and pursues his vision doggedly, Pinnick thus becomes only the third Nigerian to serve in world football’s highest decision-making body, after the late Etubom Oyo Orok Oyo and Dr Amos Adamu.

The quest by the suave and effervescent football administrator for the seat was solidly backed by the Government of Nigeria, which delegation, led by the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Nebolisa Anako was on ground in Morocco.

A mining billionaire who is also into banking and telecommunications and has businesses in 40 African countries, Dr Patrice Thlopane Motsepe is also the owner of top South African club, Mamelodi Sundowns.

In his acceptance speech, Motsepe expressed gratitude to the African football family for his attainment of the position, saying it is a huge honour to serve African football at the highest level. “All of us can and will work together,” he said, underscoring the need for team work, collaboration and sense of togetherness as he praised Senghor, Yahya and Anouma who withdrew from the race.
