Amazon’s first internet satellite liftoff suffers setback

The launch of Amazon’s first internet satellite aimed at challenging Elon Musk’s Starlink network has been postponed due to bad weather.

Amazon was to launch the internet satellite through service provider, United Launch Alliance (ULA) as reported late on Wednesday.

“A new launch date will be announced when approved,” ULA said.

The satellite is part of Amazon’s Project Kuiper, which aimed to provide internet coverage via a constellation of around 3,200 satellites in the coming years.

The planned launch from Cape Canaveral in Florida was set to carry 27 satellites into space aboard a ULA Atlas V rocket.

Amazon has already secured rocket capacity for dozens of future launches to meet regulatory deadlines.

Under its operating license, the company must deploy at least 1,600 Kuiper satellites by mid-2026.

Rival company SpaceX, founded by Tesla boss,  Musk, was already a major player in satellite internet with its Starlink network.

Satellite internet is attracting interest, not only from consumers and the military but also from airlines and telecom companies looking for affordable connectivity in remote or sparsely populated areas.

Remote areas would not have to invest on costly ground-based infrastructure.

  • UK Amazon workers to stage Black Friday walkout

UK Amazon workers to stage Black Friday walkout

Amazon workers in the UK will go on strike on Black Friday – one of the busiest shopping days of the year – in a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of the GMB union at the online giant’s site in Coventry will walk out, mounting a picket line outside the centre.

Amazon said Friday’s industrial action will not affect customers.

Strikes and demonstrations are also being held in other European countries and the U.S., which unions say will be the biggest day of action in Amazon’s history.

The GMB said more than 1,000 workers at the Coventry site will strike, making it the 28th day of action in the dispute.

A protest will also be held outside Amazon’s UK head office in London.

GMB official Amanda Gearing, said: “Today will go down as a turning point in Amazon’s history.”

“Working people who make Amazon’s business model possible stand up to demand their share of the company’s enormous wealth.”

“Despite that, Amazon bosses are desperate to claim it will be business as usual for Amazon and their customers this Black Friday.”

“The truth is that today will see the largest day of industrial disruption in Amazon’s history.”

“With industrial action escalating and workers joining strike action in Europe and the USA, it’s clear this strike is inspiring Amazon workers worldwide to fight to force the company to change its ways.”

An Amazon spokesperson said: “There will be no disruption to customers.

“We regularly review our pay to ensure we offer competitive wages and benefits.

“By April 2024, our minimum starting pay will have increased to £12.30 ($15.41) and £13 per hour depending on location.

“That’s a 20 per cent increase over two years and 50 per cent since 2018.”

“We also work hard to provide great benefits, a positive work environment and excellent career opportunities.

“These are just some of the reasons people want to come and work at Amazon, whether it’s their first job, a seasonal role or an opportunity for them to advance their career.”

Amazon said its pay rates were well above the National Living Wage and the voluntary Real Living Wage, while benefits included private medical insurance, life assurance, subsidised meals, and an employee discount.

  • Peter Obi reacts as 13-year-old Nigerian becomes Amazon’s certified developer

Peter Obi reacts as 13-year-old Nigerian becomes Amazon’s certified developer

Former governor and presidential aspirant of the Labour Party in the 2023 February election, Peter Obi, has hailed the emergence of a Nigerian Teenager as the youngest Certified Amazon Web Service Developer Associate in Africa.

13-yr-old Nigerian programmer, Joshua Agboola, recently took part in a two-hour grueling examination that tested his skills and knowledge in deploying, troubleshooting, and development on the AWS cloud platform and passed with flying colours to clinch the title.

Reacting to the news, Obi said Agboola’s achievement should gladden the hearts of most patriotic Nigerians and urged the young programmer to remain focused on building a great future for himself and a better society for all.

He added: “The recent strides of our youths in the areas of Information Technology indicate that we as a people are ready to partake in the benefits of modern technology.

“This achievement reminds us of the immeasurable roles that education plays in the life of every child. His success story should also inspire our youths to strive hard to develop their skills and seek to always become better in their fields through continuous learning and improvement.

“There is far more honour in the success achieved by utilising talents positively. If leadership inspires hope through competence and transparency with productivity as key goals, our leaders of tomorrow will be directed towards making positive use of their talents instead of diverting efforts to criminality”.

Agboola’s achievement has also received widespread applause from other Nigerians, who recognize the teenager’s remarkable feat in becoming the youngest AWS Developer Associate on the continent.

Speaking in an interview about his accomplishments in the field of IT Agboola said he was encouraged by his father to take his pursuit of a cloud career further by getting certified after his performance in the examination.

He added that though he had developed an interest in DevOps, the popular progression was to go for the Solutions Architect Associate certification, and this was what he did.

“I was initially preparing for the Solutions Architect Associate certification which is the next certification most people take in their AWS cloud journey, but had a change of mind for a tougher developer associate certification due to encouragement from an older friend programmer.

‘’The light bulb went up in my head, and I began studying the next day.

‘’The possibility of clinching the title of the youngest Developer Associate in the world, which is an equivalent of a world record in the cloud space, also became a strong motivation for me,’’ he said.

He said he prepared for the test by studying for about two to five hours daily for about six weeks.

Agboola said the first two weeks of study was to appreciate the core concepts of the course and also gain knowledge of all the topics that could come up in the exam.

According to him, this turned part of study time into revision time and had to cover the content of the Solutions Architect course earlier which gladden me because my practicing has paid off.

The 13-year-old internet sensation said his achievement in the cloud space had gotten noticed, saying “A tech. company in Lagos has already offered to provide me with further technical mentorship”.

He dedicated his achievement to young people who wish to build a career in technology while encouraging the young ones to go for their dreams.

Cloud services are infrastructure, platforms, or software that are hosted by third-party providers and made available to users through the internet.

According to Amazon, getting certified as an AWS Developer Associate showcases knowledge and understanding of core AWS services, and proficiency in developing, deploying, and debugging cloud-based applications.

Amazon said the organizations with AWS certified developers have the assurance of having the right talent to give them a competitive advantage and ensure stakeholders and customers satisfaction.

“Preparing for and attaining this certification gives certified individuals more confidence and credibility,” it added.

  • Gangs of Lagos is a sacrilegious movie, Oba of Lagos insists

Gangs of Lagos is a sacrilegious movie, Oba of Lagos insists

Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos has described the movie, “Gangs of Lagos”,  as defamatory and sacrilegious for depicting the ‘Eyo’ as criminal gangs that commit grotesque murder and visit terror on innocent citizens.

The traditional ruler raised concerns about the film in a three-page letter he addressed to the management of Amazon Prime Nigeria and Greoh Ltd. on June 28, listing four conditions that the producers and promoters should meet within 14 days.

Akiolu called  Amazon Web Service, Greoh Studios and the film producers “to immediately remove, cease and desist from using the image getup and manifestation of the Eyo in the Gangs of Lagos.”

According to the traditional ruler, the film has inflicted huge reputational damage on the Eyo brand.

Gangs of Lagos, since its release has been a subject of controversies among the indigenous people of Lagos State with the Isale Eko Descendants Union (IDU) claiming that the film depicted Isale Eko as a den of criminals and Eyo masquerade as a gang of murderers.

The descendants of Isale Eko had equally instituted a suit seeking N10 billion damages against Amazon and other producers over what they described as huge reputational damage the Gangs of Lagos inflicted on the Eyo brand.

Akiolu, in his letter, copied  Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, claiming that the illegal representation of the Eyo by the movie had caused huge reputational damage to the Eyo brand.

The traditional ruler also claimed that on the international stage, potential tourists and visitors to Lagos were likely to query the authenticity of the Eyo as true cultural heritage event deserving of respect and reverence.

He further claimed that the film producers had used the complete getup, indistinguishable image and traditionally designed and ordained appearance of the Eyo which forms part of the cultural heritage of the indigenous people of Lagos for commercial gain and exploitation.

This, he said, was done without permission or due reference to the office of the Oba of Lagos.

“I am the custodian and final authority of the Adimu Orisa and its manifestation the Eyo. These traditional rites are the tangible and intangible property of the indigenes of Lagos and these are their bundle of rights of our intellectual property in our cultural heritage.

“This cultural heritage is the legacy of physical artefacts and intangible attributes that has been inherited from past generations over two hundred years ago, maintained in the present by the Oba of Lagos and bestowed for the benefit of future generations.

“These traditions express our way of life and thought. They are proofs of our intellectual and spiritual achievements. They must not be used without the indigenous owners’ express permission or desecrated in any way whatsoever,” he said.

The Oba alleged that the film grossly violated the rights of the indigenous people of Lagos contrary to the provisions of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples 2007.

Under the international law, Oba Akiolu noted that the declaration protects “our indigenous right to practise and revitalise our cultural traditions and customs.

“This includes the right to maintain, protect and develop the past, present and future manifestations of our cultures, includes artefacts, designs, ceremonies, technologies and visual and performing arts and literature.”

Oba Akiolu, therefore, demanded that the continued use and depiction of the Eyo in the film and its obvious violation of indigenous intellectual property rights as well as defaming sacred rites should stop forthwith.

As parts of peace conditions, Akiolu directed the film producers to “immediately remove, cease and desist from using the image getup and manifestation of the Adimu Orisa – the Eyo – your film Gangs of Lagos.”

He also asked the film producers to submit within 14 days a proposal for consideration for the restitution of the sanctity of the Eyo brand.

He asked the film producers to “provide within 14 days compensatory proposal for the infringement of our intellectual property rights in our cultural heritage which you have commercially exploited without licence.”

The traditional ruler demanded that the producers of Gangs of Lagos should submit within 14 days a draft of an appropriately worded apology to the Oba of Lagos and indigenous people of Lagos.

  • Gangs of Lagos: Amazon claims film not injurious to anyone

Gangs of Lagos: Amazon claims film not injurious to anyone

Amazon Web Services Nigeria, a subsidiary of Amazon Inc. and founder of Prime Video Nigeria, has claimed that its film, “Gangs of Lagos”, is not injurious to anyone.

This was revealed in a preliminary objection by the global entertainment company in a suit filed by the Isale-Eko Descendants Union (IDU), among others, and made available on Friday in Lagos.

The company is a defendant in a suit, No LD/6903GCM/2023, before a Lagos High Court, instituted by the IDU, following its production ‘Gang of Lagos’.

The IDU had sued the company, claiming N10 billion damages before Justice Idowu Alakija of the Lagos High Court, over the contents of the film.

Alakija had fixed October date to determine Amazon’s preliminary objection to the suit.

The defendants had queried Lagos State’s jurisdiction over the production of the film before the court by some indigenes of the state.

In the suit, the defendants are questioning the authority of the Lagos State Government to censor films and videos produced within its jurisdictionas stipulated in the Cinematograph Law of Lagos State, 2004.

Amazon, accused of alleged depiction of the claimants’ territory as a den of criminals and its traditional Eyo as a gang, argued that the state’s Cinematography Law was inapplicable in the matter.

Equally, the defendants sought an order of the court pursuant to Section 25(1)(q) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to strike out the suit as it lacked the jurisdiction to entertain same.

According to the defendants, the Law under which the suit was filed was not relevant to the video and films censors law of Lagos State, explaining that the appropriate law was that of the National Film and Video Censors Board Act, 1993.

Aside the corporate body, other defendants in the suit are Mrs Jadesola Osiberu, Ms Kemi Lala-Akindoju, Mr Adesegun Adetoro, Demi Olubanwo, Mr Olumide Soyombo and Mr Bankole Wellington.

Other defendants in the suit are Mrs Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Mr Kola Aina, Greoh Ltd. and Amazon Web Services Nigeria for an alleged sacrilegious and scandalous depiction of Eyo Masquerade in the movie.

The claimants are Chief Ayodele Bajulaiye, who sued on behalf of Bajulaiye Chieftaincy Family and Eyo Iga Bajulaiye and Chief Abdul-Waheed Ayeni on behalf of Sasore Chieftaincy Family and Eyo Iga Sasore.

However, in its preliminary objection, Amazon challenged the powers of the Lagos State Government on its regulatory role in the case.

It consequently requested the court to dismiss the Lagos State Cinematography Law which they claimed was enacted outside the legislative competence of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The defendants claimed that the High Court of Lagos State had no jurisdiction to compel the Lagos State Government to censor the said film under its Cinematography Law which it argued falls within the provisions of the National Film and Video Censors Board Act.

The 1999 constitution, the defendants averred precludes the High Court of Justice from ‘’exercising jurisdiction over interpretation of the Constitution as it relates to the Federal Government and its agencies’’.

Amazon consider takeover bid for Man Utd

Tech and shopping giants Amazon have emerged as potential buyers for Manchester United.

The Red Devils are on the market, with the Glazer family officially stating they are open to selling the club.

The American owners are hoping to secure between £6 billion and £7 billion for United.

Per The Athletic, Amazon are a surprise option for committing to a United purchase.

The company does have a previous link to football, as they have a sleeve sponsorship deal with Napoli in Serie A.

Apple had been previously linked to the Red Devils, but those reports were rubbished, as the tech giant rarely acquires outside companies unless they hope to absorb them into their own business.

  • World `loneliest’ person dies in Brazil

World `loneliest’ person dies in Brazil

An indigenous man who lived in complete isolation in the Brazilian Amazon for over 25 years has died, the indigenous rights group Survival International announced late on Monday.

According to Funai, Brazil’s agency for the country’s indigenous population, which was tasked with monitoring him, the man was found dead in a hammock.

There were reportedly no signs of foul play.

The indigenous man was known as “Índio Tanaru’’ or “Índio of the hole,’’ as he was known to dig deep holes in which he hid and caught animals.

He was believed to be the last survivor of his tribe and the only inhabitant of Tanaru territory in the state of Rondônia.

He was dubbed by some as the world’s loneliest person.

Human rights activists believe that the other remaining members of his tribe were killed by cattle ranchers when they expanded into the region in the 1970s and 1980s.

The region, near Brazil’s border with Bolivia, was often referred to as Brazil’s Wild West, as land conflicts were often settled violently.

According to Fiona Watson of Survival International, the man “symbolised both the appalling violence and cruelty inflicted on indigenous peoples in the name of colonisation and economic benefit and their resistance,’’ statement said.

Exchanging gift cards for cash is already becoming a norm in Nigeria. Considering the current hard economy, it is logical that people would prefer converting their unused gift cards to naira.

Choosing to sell your unused gift cards shouldn’t be much of a hassle. The challenge here is using the right app to carry out your transaction seamlessly.

While there are several amazing apps you can use to trade your gift card in Nigeria, I will be focusing on the most recommended one to go for.

    What is a Gift Card?

Gift cards are preloaded cards with a certain amount to buy items online, use as gifts for loved ones, or for other financial uses.

There are two major types of gift cards which are Open Loop gift cards and Closed-Loop gift cards.

Closed-Loop gift cards are available at different retail stores including Amazon, Walmart, and many others. The gift card holders are entitled to purchase whatever they want from any retailer. This type of card can only be used once which means they are not reloadable.

When you exhaust the loaded fund on a closed-loop card, it has no more use. The disadvantage to a closed-loop gift card is that it always comes with an expiration date. This means the gift card holder needs to spend the loaded fund before the expiry date. These gift cards are perfect for weddings, baby showers, and other similar events.

Open-loop gift cards are similar to debit and credit cards that can be used where they are acceptable. In contrast to closed-loop gift cards, they are reloadable which allows customers to add funds anytime.

What Can I Use a Gift Card For?

Gift cards are mainly cash substitutes. Gift Cards can be redeemed for items or traded to earn cash.

Redeeming a gift card permits you to buy items in a store or on online platforms where that particular gift card is accepted.

There are various things you can use gift cards for. Gift Cards can serve as payment options at restaurants, retail stores, and others.

Apart from using gift cards to purchase items, there are other uses like gifting them to friends and family, selling them to merchants, donating to charity homes, and exchanging them for cash (naira).
